It wasn't after the series. So yes, Spike Speigel [spoiler]did die at the end of the series.[/spoiler] But really, isn't that fair? Its pretty much the release and 'freedom' he had been looking for threw out the series. It also makes the cat story he tells to Jet all that more meaningful.
