Patronus
Alright, I have a question for you so-called gamers. I've played games for many years, though I don't consider myself a gamer by heart. All the games I've ever seen are from the good guy's point of view. Well, screw that. Are there any games that let you play as the bad guy? If so, what are they, and are they any good? If not, would you play them if they were made?
Semjaza
There are some. I can't think of many offhand, to be honest, but they do exist. TIE Fighter is a good example. It's rather old and PC only, but you're on the side of the Empire fighting against the rebels. Very good game. The upcoming James Bond Goldeneye game puts you in the role of the badguys. There's a thread on it in here somewhere. Disgaea technically has you on the side of the bad guys. You're Laharl, Prince of the Underworld. It's a strategy RPG, though, so I don't know how into it most would be. Dungon Keeper is a PC series. It's a sim/strategy game that has you running your own strange dungeon. I've not gotten to play it, but I did hear good things. Tecmo's Deception series has you settings traps and killing off good characters that try to enter your castle. Pretty good game, particularly the third one.
Charles
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic is another good one. Throughout the game, you're given a multitude of opportunities to make antagonistic decisions. Eventually, your character's appearance will reflect your wicked tendencies. The differences between the light and dark sides aren't purely aesthetic either. If you've chosen to follow the dark path, the abilities that accompany it, such as force choke, won't cost as many experience points, whereas abilities such as "heal" will cost more. Furthermore, there are distinct endings you can receive, depending on which side you're aligned with. The Grand Theft Auto series, which I'm sure you're familiar with, is another obvious example. The upcoming Fable, too, alllows you to play as a badguy. It's a prominent feature.
BlueYoshi
The Way of the Samurai 2 also lets you take control of the bad guys in a very similar way to KOTOR, as Charles said, but you're deemed to choose between three characters as opposed to creating and customising your own. You, as the player, will have the opportunity to shape your characters personality for good or evil in-game. The gestures you manage and your overall behaviour will take an impact on the type of missions you'll be able to take and will implement what the residents of the town your in think of you and your natural ethics as a whole, bringing them to respect or fear you. Another retrospective game would be Command and Conquer. Traditionally, the C&C games would offer you the choice of the good guys or the bad guys, straight up. However, recent releases have been a little less subtle than that. C&C Generals would be a good example; Generals consists of many different armies and squads for you to choose from and each has a separate story or goal that make it hard to distinguish who's righteous and who's not.

Rei_Man
I'm pretty sure that the Hitman series could be classed as letting you play as the 'bad guy'. I somehow doubt that assassins who sneak around shooting people in the back of the head and slitting people's throats with razor wire would usually be in the 'good' category. Some others that I would suggest, namely GTA, Command & Conquer, and Tie Fighter (I own all 3) have already been mentioned, and so I will not repeat what has already been said about them. I must admit it's somewhat disturbing how amusing and satisfying playing as the 'bad guy' can be.

Of course, there are consequences for evil actions heh.

I can only assume he's referring strictly to consoles though, bearing the forum and all.
Guest Arralyn
Breath of Fire IV let you choose whether your charater (Ryu) would become evil or good. It wasn't really an 'evil' standard, but it was good. It was for PS1 And The new Sonic Game (can't remember the name) lets you choose to be bad, good, or neutral. It's for PS2, GC and XBox. SonicSlash
The problem with deciding if you the bad guy in a game is, even if you are the good guy, to the bad guys, you are the bad guy. One game I can think of, you aren't exactly a bad guy, but you kinda act like one. It's called Psi-Ops, and it just came out for Xbox, I don't know about the other systems though. Your a good guy, but you do stuff you would usually find a bad guy doing, like killing people by using your psychic powers and throwing them into fans... But Sonic Heroes is the game you were thinking of, Arralyn, and yeah, it lets you be the bad guys. You can also be the bad guys in Sonic Adventure 2, I think.
