Manic Webb
So the other day, I picked up the complete DVD boxset of the series Firefly. For those of you who don't know, Firefly is a sci-fi television series created by Joss Whedon, who is also famous for creating Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Angel. Set 500 years into the future, Firefly follows the crew of a run-down firefly-class cargo spaceship named Serenity. It turns out there is no other intelligent life in the universe, and mankind has decided to spread out and live among the stars. Several planetoids and moons were terraformed (made suitable for plant and animal life) and colonized by multiple Earth-based governments until a great war led to the unification of all planets under one Alliance. However, settlers were dropped on their respective moons with little supplies and practically nothing in the way of modern technology. Thus, many places are socially, technologically, and visually equivilant to the Old West in the United States during the 1800's. Ladies and gentlemen, this show is about deep space cowboys. And I love it. Granted, I'm only half-way through the episodes at this point. It was a great TV series, and it's a shame Fox cancelled it. The characters are solid; their stories, their different reactions to situations, they way they all seem to bond. Judging from the looks of it, I'd say this show had a pretty large budget for something only in its first (and sadly last) season. I guess Fox took a chance with Whedon, considering his two prior shows were big hits. A good show. Just a shame I didn't watch it while it was still on the air... not that I ever saw a Fox commercial that gave an air date more specific than "next week." Guest Juron
I remember watching it a few times on FOX, back when they ran the show, and loving it. There was one character on the crew who I particularly hated, for no apparent reason, but aside from that, the show was great. The only reason I had hardly any idea when it was going on was because, like you said, poor timeslot information by FOX, and the fact that I came in halfway through or so. *sighs* Now I wanna get the boxed set. Guest Poster_Lite
I never heard of Firefly until it came out on DVD, and now I'm a rabid fan myself. Fortuately, Joss has reunited the original crew and is currently shooting the movie Serenity at Universal Studios. It's scheduled to be released on April 22, 2005. If Serenity is successful at the boxoffice, there might be more Firefly movies in the future. Universal has opened a website for fans to show their support and get inside information and pictures from the filming. They make you sign up (Join the Browncoats) before you can access the information, but that's no harder than signing up for this board was.
