Anime Which do you prefer: Manga or Anime?

I completely agree with you. The censorship is going over the top now. Half the shows end up being edited and cut out. Some of the best stuff from the Japanese release of the anime ends up being cut out by whatever company translates it. Its ultimately up to the people that watch it, parents need to be in control of their kids, that way there will be no need for censorship.

Besides, you can read Manga's pretty much anywhere even in the car or on the bus, with anime you have to wait until you get home :([/FONT][/COLOR]

What the heck are you talking about?

Anime on TV is often edited, but plenty of high-profile shows (such as Wolf's Rain, Witch Hunter Robin, Fullmetal Alchemist and Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex) have experienced little to no censorship whatsoever. I can think of maybe two companies that produce edited DVD releases--4Kids and Tokyopop, and Tokyopop only began doing this very recently (with Rave Master and the "tricked-out" English dub of Initial D).

The vast majority of anime DVDs, and therefore the vast majority of anime in America, is totally uncensored. Even shows that were cut for TV--such as Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin and Yu-Gi-Oh--have come out uncut on DVD. If anything, the censorship in manga is much worse. Viz in particular is notorious for making their Shonen Jump titles more kid-friendly.

I gathered that, but you also said, "The censorship is going over the top now. Half the shows end up being edited and cut out." This is simply untrue. Honestly, the level of censorship (particularly regarding anime on Adult Swim) has greatly diminished. The shows on TechTV tend to run virtually uncut, as do the shows on The Anime Network and (if I remember correctly) the International Channel. AS performs far fewer edits now than they used to.

Naturally anything handled by 4Kids will be an absolute mess, but I can only think of a few anime they've done recently--Shaman King, One Piece, etc. How does that translate to an [i]increase[/i] in censorship?

Back on topic: I've got a question. Do any of you find that your buying habits differ when it comes to anime and manga? I purchase nearly all of my anime DVDs online, but with manga I usually go to brick-and-mortar bookstores. Huge online discounts are a bit harder to find for manga, so there isn't a big monetary disadvantage involved in hitting up Borders or whatever. And I tend to require instant gratification when I'm looking for manga, even though I don't mind waiting ages for DVDs to ship.

having grown up in australia as well, i first got into anime when Akira was shown on free-to-air TV. but after that i had really no access to anime until they started showing the 'kids' anime like DBZ, cardcaptors, sailormoon, zoids and yugioh in the mornings. ive only really been reading manga since an EBgames store came to my home town last year, and i started buying manga and anime. but ive always been an anime person more than a manga person.

I think it is much better to buy the manga in person. In addition to the instant gratification you have from leaving the store with something tangible, you also get to look through it. You know the copy is authentic and it is new in good quality. I also like to take a sneak preview sometimes and thumb through a few pages, just so I know what Im getting into.

I think I prefer manga because sometimes the English dubbed versions of Anime annoy the heck out of me. However, I do watch about as many shows (even though they irritate me) as I read in manga, so ya. I'm also into the instant gratification thing. It especialy annoys my parents when I go into a book store and blow all my money on five or six graphic novels. It's just that once I buy one I have to get the whole series or I'll go nutz. :eek:

I enjoy both reading manga and watching anime. I like comparing and contrasting the differences in the story lines and, at times, the personality of the characters. I find both have merit and I do enjoy both forms of media. For me my choice of which I prefer all depends on my mood at the time. I find that when I am reading a manga that is also in anime form, I end up "hearing" the voice of the character in the anime in my mind when I am reading. To me, it actually helps me enjoy the manga more.

To answer Dagger's question. I buy my manga in bookstores and my DVDs I will purchase them where ever I can find them. Many times buying DVD's online will cost less than in a brick-and-mortar store. Manga I have found to cost the same amount no matter where you search. For that reason I see no point in having to wait for my manga fix when I can just go to the bookstore.

with some series i prefer manga and with some anime, but most of the time i like them both just as much. with Yu-gi-oh for instance I prefer the manga, I think it's funnier than the anime.

Series with a lot of fights, like dragonball or angelic layer, i prefer as anime, because i think fightsences come accros better on telly ;)

I'd have to say I like the manga,more BLOOOOOD!!!They usually cut out all the blood in the anime, and not only that, I can stare at bishies as I read^_^(you can't do that in the anime)But anime has it's good points too, moving pictures are fun to see, I can learn *a little* japanese along the way,seiyuus pwn all and opening and ending songs are cool :D

For me, the answer isnt really clear. It depends on the series and it depends on what mood I'm in. I love the [I]Fruits Basket[/I] manga more than the anime. The artwork is phenominal, and I almost got to the point of drooling, looking at Yuki in the manga. ^_^ I also think the story in [I].hack//Legend Of The Twlight[/I] manga is far better than the anime. (to my surprise, no less) I also want to point out, I hope they never make [I]Diabolo[/I] into an anime, I dont think they can do the manga justice.
On the other side of that coin, I enjoy [I]Peacemaker, Inuyasha, Gravitation [/I] and a host of others as animated series rather than their respective manga. For a variety of reasons depending on the anime; including the music tracks, the voice overs which I've gotten used to, and storylines.

I guess that it all depends on the mood that I am in at the time. I like the variety that I have at my disposal with both mediums. Both anime and manga have their good qualities while anime can be considered to be more theatrical because it is animated, there are some things that the animators can sometimes not touch on due to time constrains or other factors like what the creator and the company they work for are willing to have animated. Most of the manga that I have read and own have given me some more insight to the story or an alternate storyline to consider. One other thing that I like about most of the manga that I own is that they are published in a way that you read right to left which also makes it more interesting than reading a regular book.

But I'd say manga. I say that because it's a type of book, and I love books. Plus, it's always on hand, you can always refer to it for drawing help, and it almost always has wonderful artists. Plus, you don't have to listen to voices you don't like (some animes have people who's voices are really annoying).

I know these aren't very good reasons, but there's just something about manga that I like more than anime.

I'm inclined to say manga, mainly because it's cheaper than anime for me. But, anime is what led me to start buying manga, so both are good I suppose.

What I've noticed people tend to say in this topic is that anime's good because it's easier to understand what's going on; and when it comes to manga, the story is better because it's exactly like the creator wanted it.

Asking a question like this is like asking, ?What is better, a Nissan R34 Skyline GT-R or Toyota Land Cruiser??
While yes you could ask this, it is somewhat pointless; each vehicle has a use it was designed for. A Skyline GT-R is for on pavement use, and has stunning performance there, but you could not really take it up a mountain, and you would need the Land Cruiser for that. Each is good at what it does.

This is the same with Anime and Manga.

I prefer Subbed Animation to Manga because well... firstley i'm addicted to Anime and secondley I cant think of a more fun way to learn a bit of Japanese. =)

If I could read kanji I would most probably be equally addicted to Manga for the same reason as watching anime.

Theres no doubt that most of the time theres quite a bit that gets lost in translation but, I am currentley quite content with my extremeley limited Japanese vocabulary. =)

I would have to say I prefer anime. Although Manga is interesting and the artwork is fun to look at I prefer the shows as the books are too easily finished. I personally prefer books that are written on a much higer level of reading comprehension. I realize that manga isn't meant to be like a regular novel, it's just what I am use to as I was reading novels like "The Sword of Shannara" by Terry Brooks since I was 12 years old. So by the time I found anime and manga I found anime more enjoyable. Plus I think anime brings the story and characters to life in a way that manga doesn't. However if I really like a series I will get the manga as it will have tidbits and differences in it that aren't in the anime and in that respect I like manga as well.

I have one exception to that though. So far out of what I have seen, I prefer the Yu-Gi-Oh manga to the anime. I really don't like how they have edited it for tv. I know they did it to make it for kids, but I think they ruined a really good series.

I could never choose. I mean, there's a balance in absolutely everything. Anime is on your TV, and can be a heck of a lot cheaper than manga, but manga is always there to go back to, (Unless of course, you own it on DVD) and the list just goes on, with pros and cons to each. Again; I could never choose, and I don't intend to...

I like the fact that you can see details in manga that the anime is either too fast or too simply drawn to see. I also like the fact that you can read manga at almost any time, while for anime you have to be near a television or computer.

Although I must say the Tenchi Muyo anime better than the manga.[/COLOR]

That is quite a hard question! i like them both very much but if i had to choose i'd go with the anime becasue they are more drawn out and you can't sit down and just watch all of them in a matter of like an hour where as manga i'm done with them in and hour or less. they are awesome but i go through them way to quikly!....with that i shall leave you PEACE OUT :cool:

Anime for me, if I read I read classic novels so I just like to watch anime rather than read manga. I do like animes that are based on mangas though (such as Inuyasha).

[COLOR=Gray][SIZE=1]Hmmm...I still prefer manga to anime...Manga is just so much more detailed, more in-depth, and you get a better feel for the characters the way the creator wants you to. As you go along characters other sides are revealed slowly, whereas in Animes the characters personas are revealed very quickly. Characters are also slightly less...magical in anime (I couldn't find another word *shrugs*). Zazie the Beast from Trigun is completely [B]awesome[/b] in the manga, but isn't nearly as cool in the series.

However, Anime definitely has it's ups. The Anime movie [b][I]X[/b][/I] was extremely good, but I heard from my buddy that the series wasn't so great. I personally don't know though. :animeswea. I own the mangas Chrono Crusade and Tsubasa, and think they're very good, but haven't watched the animes (although I'm not sure if there's a Tsubasa anime) so I can't comment on that either.[/SIZE][/COLOR]
