Dragon Warrior / Dragon Quest Games!

Hey all! I've been a fan of the Dragon Quest series (aka, Dragon Warrior outside of Japan) since 2000 when I got my first game in the series, Dragon Warrior Monsters. Since then I've beaten nearly all the other DQ/DW games, some multiple times, and have become a huge fan of the series. IMO, it is the best RPG series ever.

So far I have:
Beaten Dragon Warrior I six times.
Beaten Dragon Warrior II three times.
Beaten Dragon Warrior III three times.
Beaten Dragon Warrior IV once, but am currently replaying it.
Beaten Dragon Quest V three times.
Played through a large portion of Dragon Quest VI, but never successfully beaten it.
Beaten Dragon Warrior VII twice, and spent about 500 - 600 hours playing in total through other incomplete replays.
Beaten Dragon Warrior Monsters twice.
Beaten Dragon Warrior Monsters 2 three times.
Played a small portion of Dragon Quest Monsters: Caravan Hearts, and will NEVER touch this horrible game again!
Played a small portion of Torneco no Daibouken.
Beaten Torneko: The Last Hope once.

My favorites so far are Dragon Warrior VII, Dragon Warrior IV, and Dragon Warrior III (I find them to be equal in greatness).

Anyway, I want to know if anyone else has played or is a fan of Dragon Quest. Perhaps they can join me in drooling over the upcoming Dragon Quest VIII. :P

Indeed I do drool over the upcoming game. And unlike you, I await DWM: CH with open arms :)

If you couldn't tell by the screen name, I am a diehard DW fan. But if anything, Dragon Warrior Monsters is my all-time favorite. DW3 is good for the normal series, but all in all, nothing beats the classic monster-catching medieval-style game. It definately whoops Pokemon across the floor.

I've beaten DWM, but am currently training my butt off to get an all-star team. I haven't been defeated by anyone aside from my equal rival and good friend Wes. We are very into this game. This game is great since it's never ending. The ultimate strategy and team is always fun to try and get, but then again, can be beaten by another strategy and team.

Holy crap, I love you.

Dragon Warrior was my first console RPG... way back in '89 or whatever year Nintendo Power gave it away for free in. I absolutely loved it and have been a huge fan of the series ever since. It's my favorite RPG series. The only thing that comes close would be Atlus's Shin Megami Tensei series and its spin-offs.

Favorites... I'm going with III or IV. They're both amazing games, especially for their time. I love the customization in III, especially. There's really so many different ways you can go about playing the game because of it, especially with the addition of the class change system that appeared in most of the other titles.

IV is also great, I think mostly because it was the first to really emphasize the story and characters. Certainly not to the level of modern RPGs, but it was a start. I really loved Ragnar and Alena especially. The ending was simply awesome too... way beyond other RPGs at the time.

The only game I'm really not fond of is II. The game is just too vague. As soon as you get the boat, the area you're able to access increases so dramatically that it's almost overwhelming. That and the stupid crest quest just annoy me. I don't play that one much.

As for Dragon Warrior 8, I cannot ******* wait for it. It's my most wanted RPG outside of the upcoming Shin Megami Tensei games.

Have you both seen the huge, direct feed videos that were released for it?

This is to Dragon Warrior:

DWM holds the nostalgia card for me, it'll always be the game that I remember the most. I played it non-stop back in 2000.

Now, about DQM:CH, I doubt it will ever come to North America. Unless DQ8 is an amazingly huge hit here, Square Enix won't bother with it. Like I said, it's quite the dull and horrible game. If you ever play it, you'll understand what I mean. It does no justice to the first 2. Look into some reviews or videos of this game, you'll be enlightened.

I've heard it was coming to NA. Read about it not too long ago that it's coming this winter or something. But who knows?

As for DWM, it's the most magical game of all time! Make sure to have a GoldGolem on your team. I always do. They're kickass if they have the right skills (mine has maxed out stats now so I guess any monster with maxed out stats and good skills kicks butt, but personality and shiz...)
No :^O Where are they? I must see >: ) Like I said for DWM: CH, I await this game with open arms too.

And it'll be so perdy :3
I don't have the link anymore, but I do have the file. I could throw it up on my site and link it here later. Just watch this post for an edit with the link... It's really big though, like around 150 MBs, I believe. Three videos in one Zip file. I hope that's okay heh.

They show all sorts of stuff. One is a medley of different things, one shows dungeon exploration and one shows town exploration. Fights, dialogue, the overworld and so forth are all shown.

There are two things that caught my attention most. The first is the battles. They're mostly 3rd person, which will make some people happy. However, when choosing your commands the camera goes to the traditional DQ battle viewpoint. I think it's an awesome, nostalgic touch.

The second thing is the sound. They kept a lot of the classic DQ sounds in this game, but they sound a bit updated (and not completely 8-bit like in VII)... plus it seems as though the music is fully orchestrated. Thank god. I love Koichi Sugiyama's music.

And if you have played V, there's a neat addition to VIII that's pretty damn cool (
you get to ride a killer panther heh
).

Anyway, here are some screen shots of the game for those that haven't seen it. Strangely DQ8 has yet to get a thread here... I was planning on doing it eventually, but never got around to it.

I'm also really, really hoping that Square Enix brings the PS2 remake of Dragon Quest V out here. I love the Super Famicom original and while the PS2 version isn't the best looking game out there, I know it's a blast. It's interesting that V is considered the favorite in the series amongst fans in Japan.

They've not said anything either way yet. If VIII does well, or they want to lead up to it, V might be worth putting out here. Honestly, considering how good this looks and the fact that Square Enix has more marketing muscle than Enix itself ever did, VIII has a very good chance. Plus, it doesn't hurt that the designs finally resemble Akira Toriyama's original artwork.

I drool, sir. I drool :<~~~

Those graphics are the shizzle. They remind me somewhat of DBZ Budokai and Tales of Symphonia graphics mixed (obviously the DBZ graphics are similar since DW uses Akira Toriyama's character designs). This looks more incredible than I thought, though.

And I agree, I love the Dragon Warrior music and to hear it as this new style is off the charts! Me can't wait :D On my list to get!

I too hope for the Dragon Quest V remake to make it's way to North America. I was really pissed about the Dragon Warrior IV remake getting cancelled... However, unless DQ8 sells at least 1 million coppies in North America, Square Enix won't bring it over. Dragon Warrior VII was apparently a low seller (I heard around 700,000) in North America.

I have also seen those videos, but ony in a low resolution at IGN for free. (I should really look into getting a membership there.) I'd say that of what I've seen, it could be the best looking game on the PS2. Oh, and the music is amazing as well!

Unfortunately, I have yet to play DW4, 5, and 6 since Enix (now SquareEnix) decided to be goofy and cancel it, as ZakuSage stated. DW7 is on my list as well. I mean, I've played a bit, but I have yet to purchase it. DW games aren't exactly easy to come by for Nintendo anymore.

Isn't DW8 for Gamecube?

No. DQ8 is quite for PS2... I hope that was a joke :P.

I've played Dragon Quest 5 and 6 only through emulation (with a translation patch, it's great).

As for DW games being had to come by for Nintendo, maybe you should look into getting a PS2. They've gone down in price, and on it you could play DW7 and DQ8.

BTW, did anyone else hear the rumor that Enix may change the Dragon Warrior name to Dragon Quest in North America? I think this would be a great thing, as Dragon Quest is just a better name, and it's the original name. I also like the fact that the T is a sword in the Dragon Quest symbol.

No, I've never seen it. I've heard of an effort to post some episodes on the internet once, but I never really looked to far into it.

I did however manage to pick up a Fly manga (based on Dragon Warrior stuff) while I was in Quebec a few months ago. It was interesting to read, as it was in French and I only have a loose knowledge of the French language.

I'm pretty certain that they will change it to Dragon Quest, just to keep it uniform. The gaming world isn't really as seperate as it once was and two different titles just confuse people. Plus, the reason it was renamed here was because another company owned the rights to the Dragon Quest name in the States... I don't know if that's still true anymore, but I don't think it is.

Anyway, 700,000 copies is a LOT. Many successful games in the US don't go anywhere near 1,000,000 copies... let alone non-FF RPGs. I don't think Square Enix will be expecting anywhere near that amount as a good reason to bring DQV over.

I believe the US sales totales for VII were actually somewhere around 250,000 though (I could be wrong, but I am pretty positive it wasn't near 700k). Not bad for a game with little advertising that was released when the PSX was pretty much already dead.

No sales numbers were actually released for Dragon Warrior 7 from Enix of America. There have been many estimates. I've seen as low as 200,000 to 800,000. I saw 700,000 quite a bit though, so I just went with that.

Other companies do keep track of numbers though... I asked on another forum and the numbers they have from sales listings are as follows:

835 PSX DRAGON WARRIOR VII Oct-02 ENIX AMERICA 889 177,147 $23.45 ** $20,847.65

Not horrible, but definitely not amazing. I'm sure it doesn't include Walmart though, as they never show their numbers to anyone for some reason.

Edit - I should add that that was as of 2003, but I can't imagine it has sold a LOT more since then... so I'd guess around 250,000 heh.

Yes, that site did actually host some episodes, but they were so big, my computer would never be able to download them in short time, let alone be able to hold them. (My comp is crap mind you.) Nevertheless, I know plenty about the TV series and even read a nifty little thing on the web that explains exactly what happens in each episode. I don't recall how far I got. I think I finished Season 1 and that was it. Maybe it'll come out on DvD.

Anyways, using the program RM2K, I made a cool little DWM game for computer called Dragon Warrior Masters. It involved stealing the keys used by eight dark lords (and surprisingly enough, this was made before DWM2 was released so therefore I knew nothing of the keys XD). It was fun, but never got finished.

Yeah, I've attempted/am attempting (it's a work in progress) working on a Dragon Warrior based game. I named it Dragon Quest Revolution. I don't think I'll ever finish, but working on an RPG every now and then is fun. There are quite a bit of Dragon Warrior RPGMaker resources on different sites.

Yes, I know. I have made a Dragon Warrior game before that I actually completed, but unfortunately it was deleted. That sucked so bad. I still have Dragon Warrior Masters, but still... my beautiful game :(

And say, if you wanna share your game and game ideas, post in the RPG Maker thread in the PC/MAC forum here on OB. We wouldn't mind more members posting there :) We insist on it, actually.

But yeah, my game...

Now that I have a PS2, I'm going to be seriously looking into Dragon Quest VIII. And maybe I'll pick up VII if I can find it. I don't think I've ever actually seen it in stores. Same problem as with Skies of Arcadia Legends, which I also want to get . . . though that's another story.

But anyway, I've never actually played any Dragon Quest/Warrior games myself, though I remember watching my brother and his friend play DW and DWII on the NES a long time ago. I think the clearest memory I have is of them trying to beat these skeleton monsters in DW, since they gave a lot of EXP. They'd have to cast Sleep on them in order to not die, heh. So I don't really have any experience with the series, but I'm hoping to make that change soon.

The screen shots of DQVIII look amazing. I'd love to see those videos, Tony.

Most Dragon Warrior games can be found on places like Amazon.com. Supposedly SquareEnix stopped producing copies of DW7 or something so there was a limited amount. I dunno if it's true, but a good way to get it now is an online store. I don't think actual stores hold the piece anymore. As for other DW in online stores... I'm not too sure you'd find any NES ones, but then again, what do I know? I haven't tried XD

I was turned on to the games by a friend of mine. And since then I have beaton Dragonquest 3 and Torneko: The Last Hope. I am close to the end of 7 and I am on chapter 2 of 4. I got close to the end of dragon warrior monsters 2 but had to restart. I plan on beting the rest before 8 comes out.

Well there were 3 Torneko games made, but only the 2nd ever made it to North America.

The game is best described as a Dragon Warrior spinnoff, but not in the same sence that DWM is. T:TLH is a game with a lot of dungeon crawling through randomly created floors in dungeon, like DWM, but unlike DWM it the battle system is done right on the map. It is still turn based, and you can do one thing each turn. You can also run into several monsters in a room at one time, and walk up to which one you want to fight first. When you're walking around the dungeon your hunger meter goes down. You must replenish this in order to survive by eating bread every now and then. An interesting feature in this game is the fact that every time you leave a dungeon you go back to the town at level 1, although later on in the game you can talk to a mage who casts a spell to make you as high as level 5 for the start of a dungeon.

I'd say if you really want to get info on the game, chech out reviews at ign.com or gamespot.com. There's also a lot of info and help into the game at dragons-den.com (which could be helpful in deciding about it).
