Syk3
I know people got pretty angry last year when I didn't mention anything about this con until after I went to it, so I wanted to make it up to you guys by posting early this year. >_< The Anime Weekend thread also reminded me of it *just realizes that the thread is really old, but that's besides the point o_o*, and if Dagger or Asuka or Solo wants to make one one big "Anime Con" thread, then that's cool, too. ^_^ The con is a lot earlier than it was last year, for those of you that went last year. I had the impression that last year, Otakon 2003 took place further in August. It's from Friday, July 30th to Sunday, August 1st, and takes place in the Baltimore Convention Center in (who woulda thought..) Baltimore, Maryland. Well, I went last year for a day, and after 11 hours of anime, I was really worn out. Not to say that it wasn't fun, just a lot of walking around, and this year I would have liked to go all three days, but, of course, I will be at the beach the first two. =_= Luckily they'll give out free stuff on the last day to make up for it. :p The convention center is packed with people, so if you hope to see someone there, except to set a meeting place or get their cell number, because otherwise you'll never find each other. Trust me, I went through that last year, and 11 hours is a long time to look for someone. They estimate that approximately 20,000 people will be at Otakon, and I hope they don't mean all at one time. O.o I wouldn't be surprised if they did though, haha. So if anyone wants to meet up, or can navigate through the website to find out the times of when it's open, that would be awesome. Maybe we can have some OtakuBoards group, or something. http://www.otakon.com/ EDIT: I almost forgot! The prices.. 3 Day Membership - $55 Friday Only Membership - $35 Saturday Only Membership - $40 Sunday Only Membership - $
eleanor
AWA is coming! *dances* I went to Anime Weekend Atlanta last year ['twas my first convention] and it was great fun. ^_^ I'm definately planning on going this year...even though I have no money. Lol. Somehow I'll make cash. Last year I walked in and got the 'Walk-In' membership and it like...forty bucks or something. o_O No cosplaying, though. *veers away from rabid cosplaying fans* :toothy: Anyone going to AWA/any other convention this year?
Guest lavalamp
The only reason I'm going is to see L'Arc~en~Ciel. I'm still trying to pull money together though, so I'm nervous. If I miss them, I'll cut my head off. As for anime: no. I went forever ago when I liked anime and couldn't stand it. Otakon houses some of the most idiotic people known to exist. There are two types of people at Otakon and other anime conventions. 1. Fat, sweaty, awkward, and dizzy anime elitists. 2. Fat, sweaty, awkward, and dizzy self-proclaimed J-ROCK fans. I'll pass. Syk3
Well, I'm not fat or sweaty. ;) I think it's fun to see all of the people who cosplay as anime or video game characters that you can recognize, and it's an added bonus that you're in a room full of people who share similar interests to you. The main reason I go to the con, though, is because of all of the different booths and stuff, the anime that they show, the new releases information, and the dealer's room. I had fun last year, and I hope to have as much fun this year as well.
Panda
I would love to go to a con on the east coast. I have only been to conventions on the west coast. It is true that there is alot of HOBO (Horrible Otaku Body Odor) at cons, but it should stop anyone from attending a convention! Like Syk3 mentioned, there are so many other reasons like the dealer's room and spending time around others who share a love of the same thing you do...anime! I have had fun at all the conventions I have attended. I think it is a great chance to meet people you have met online. I had a chance to meet up with Mamma Vash from theOtakuboards at Anime Expo this year. We had a great time and are planning to meet up again next year. ^_^ I do know that Harmony Gold, the company that owns the rights to Robotech, will be going to Otakon for their first convention outside of California. It sounds like there is going to be a great list of guest and panelist at Otakon this year. I really wish I were attending! To everyone who is going, have lots of fun and I wish I were going with you!
Dagger
Since I live just outside of the District, Baltimore is only an hour or two away from my home. However, my interest in Otakon stems solely from the fact that I'm still hoping certain series will be licensed before the convention season ends. After thinking about this for a little while, I realized I would be able to find most of the announcements online shortly after they ended up being made, and decided to spend my money on something else. ;) The free stuff is a wee bit tempting, though. In response to Syk's first post: Anime Expo 2004 broke the 20,000 mark, so I wouldn't be at all surprised if Otakon did as well (isn't Otakon traditionally the larger of those two cons?). ~Dagger~

I could be wrong, though; there's no denying that Otakon is pretty big. It's a shame that you aren't going to be attending the con, Dagger. It would have been cool to see another mod there, heh. ^_^
Naru
YAY! I'm going to AWA again! I'm going as Misha from Pita Ten this year. I've looked forward to it all year! Hey! eleanor
I'm getting pretty pre-excited for AWA, too. lol I guess I'll insert some basic info for anyone who is possibly interested: AWA 10 is September 24-26, 2004 at the Renaissance Waverly Hotel, Atlanta Georgia Pre-Registration Individuals Rates: $20 - Sept 29, 2003 to Jan 1, 2004 $25 - Jan 2, 2004 to May 1, 2004 $30 -May 2, 2004 to Aug. 1, 2004 Groups Rates: Sept 29, 2003 to March 1, 2004: $75 for 4 people and each additional person is $15. March 2, 2004 to August 1, 2004: $80 for 4 people and each additional person is $20. I think Walk-In registration for AWA is forty bucks...if I remember correctly. I'll probably be doing walk-in because I'm lazy...and stuff. Lol. I'm glad your going maladjusted! I can't wait to see you again! Aren't you glad I would stop bugging you to go last year?!?! =^^= *jumps up and down like a maniac* I am SO excited to get into the Dealer's Room [and meeting Naru again, lol], that was the higlight of my visit last year. I'm already saving up to go raid it...*cackles* I actually didn't go to any panels or workshops last year...we ended watching the cosplaying contest for a really long time, lol.
Dagger
Regarding Otakon... it's only Saturday, and two recent anime I've really enjoyed watching have already been announced. ^_^ Geneon has licensed quite a few shows, among them several that most people expected to be picked up by other companies. Their eight acquisitions are Star Ocean Ex, Human Scramble, Tokyo Underground, Ultra Maniac TV, Le Portrait de Petit Cossette OVA, Jubei-Chan: The Ninja Girl 2, Kyou Kara Maou! and Koi Kaze. Bandai's new licenses include PLANETES, Fantastic Children (which, if I recall correctly, has not yet started airing in Japan) and Avenger. ~Dagger~
Semjaza
I'd never go to an anime-specific convention... but I'm considering going to Wizard World here in Chicago next month. It's sure to have manga and anime there anyway, but at least there will be Western comics too. I mostly wanted to go to get my Walking Dead comics signed. If anyone involved in Astonishing X-Men is going, I'm definitely bringing one of my Del Toro varient covers too heh. I doubt anyone here is going to that though. I think I'm the only kid here from Chicago.

Even though Otakon has already started, I'm [strike]forcing[/strike] urging you to go next year, Dagger. An anime fan that hasn't been to an anime convention is seriously missing out on some good, clean fun. Though, the prices for Otakon are pretty...steep. O_o. AWA is only about 20 bucks for each single day. But then again, AWA only has about 6,000 people attending. I can't begin to imagine 20,000. >_> So, it'd be great for you to just visit once. It's really an awesome time...unless you have some scantily clad cosplayer come and harrass you.
Ryuma Asakura
I'll be attending MTAC (Middle Tennessee Anime Convention) in April...and my friend's boyfriend is at Otakon now. I think the price for pre-registration for MTAC is $15.00 as of now...
No
I'm so jealous of you all if you go to Otakon. I wish I couild go honestly. I really wanted to see L'arc~en~Ciel. Again I miss another J-rock band. I'm seriusly going to cry, I really wanted to see Sid at ACEN But i missed it becuase I had school. *Sighs* If you see them you are lucky. Be happy that you get to have the opportunity to go see them live. Just think you are living the dream that someone has. Like me. youta moteuchi
This year I was lucky enough not only to go to my first anime convention, but also to get a space a its Artist's Alley. It was AnimeBoston2004. It was fun, kinda tirying, though.... I spent twelve hour drawing commisions on the first day and fourteen on the following... By sunday - the last day of the convention - i was so tired that I didn't even touch my pencils, just hung around with some friends I made over there. I'd like to know if anybody here at OB had a chance to go to this same convention or plans to go to AnimeBoston next year? And if you did, and went to Artist's Alley: do you remember a guy that was sitting at the corner of the room, surrounded by colored pencils and paper? Yeah, that was me! hehe I can't wait for the convention next year!!!!
Secily
Well, my cousin Nick Szmyd (He has blue hair, is heavy, and the hair is long, but not like a pony-tail, like a Beatle's long) went to that same convention, and he's taking me next year...or at least he said he would...he said it was awesome...does that mean you live in MA too? natetron46
That sounds like a really cool event, I have family up in boston, maybe I should try to go up to visit them at the exact time.... :) Not a bad plan.
Panda
Labor Day weekend, September 4th through 6th, will be the dates for Kumoricon in Portland, Oregon. If you are in the Pacific Northwest this would be an excellent con to go to. This is Kumoricon's second year and it will be held at the Downtown Marriott in Portland. Nothing like new con smell... Preregistation price for the con is $30. But tickets will be available at the door for a little higher price. Help support the anime fandom in the Pacific Northwest, go to the con if you can! There will be an artist alley, dealer room, gaming, karaoke competition, cosplay masquerade, panels and much more. I will be attending the con so if anyone is planing on going PM me, I would love to meet up with fellow OBers! :D
MangoPenguin
Ryuma Asakura, I'm kind of convinced that I'm your friend whose boyfriend was at Otakon...if you're ever called Wordy, then I know so... *whoot* But yes! My boyfriend was at Otakon, he was the man in the pink tutu-looking thing and the swans...aka Mister Two from One Piece. Oh boy. ^^;; *lol* I too will be going to MTAC next year, and AWA this year. At AWA, I will be Kiki (Kiki's Delivery Service), Kaya (Syrup Village story arc, One Piece), and a classic Lolita. Funfun! *welcomes myself to the boards as well*
Naru
::sigh:: I just finished Misha's skirt. It's taking forever...it looks good though. I wont be finished in time for this con, so I'm being Chun-li from Street Fighter. I already finished the dress except for the gold parts, so I'm in the clear. lol. Hope to see some of you at AWA!~ ~naru-chan
eleanor
Hey all. I know this thread is old and such but I wasn't sure if I should have started a new one...so heck. Anyways, AWA is this Saturday! :D I think it's one of the biggest anime cons down here in the south...even though its attendance is nothing compared to Otakon or Anime Expo, lol. I'm only going on Saturday but I'm happy. :3 The cancellation of AWA of sort of questioned during the whole Hurricane Ivan thing but it's all the same...and I'm excited and etc. Sadly the thing I'm most excited about is getting a cool hat from the Genki Gang [they're popular among cosplay-ish savvy people and they sell the most incredible hats] and I'm getting this hat that's the top of the lonely bunny from Chobits. XD People will stare at me when I wear it, but it's awesome. I'm also happy because my absolute favorite online artist is going to be there...as well as another artist I like. :) In terms of official guests...I think the most popular one is Mari Ijimi, who voiced Lynn Minmay from Macross and has singing career. And the guy who made Megatokyo, but I'm not really a fun. *shrug* And meeting Naru again! ^___^
