Ninjaman
Yeah, I know this movie is a bit old, but I saw this movie for the first time a few weeks ago on TV and I was thining about it again today so I thought I'd make a thread. I didn't know much about the movie, though my mom already happened to spoil the ending for me before I saw it, I still watched it anyway. It was quite a unique movie. Every scene fascinated me, how it was all shot, I mean. I couldn't help but feel attached to David's innocence, especially everytime he asked "Is it a game?". I adored Haley Joel Osment's acting in this movie. The ending was what really moved me. David's wish to be with his mother was touching. I couldn't help but feel happy for a fictional character being happy. After watching it, I suddenly felt different about my own relationship with my family and friends. I wanted to be with them. I was actually surprised that a movie made me feel that way. The movie was very good, but to be honest, I wished I had someone with me while I was watching. Any comments about the movie? James
A.I. is one of my favourite movies. It is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen, to be honest. It left a great impression on me. Really, everything about it impressed me. The dialogue is great throughout, the movie is visually beautiful (some simply amazing shots -- remember when David was standing there and his mother closed the door on him?) And the acting is superb. The movie would not have been as amazing without Haley Joel Osment -- he is the best child performer I think I've ever seen, at least in many years. Compare him to another child actor like the kid who played Anakin in Star Wars...and there is no comparison. lol A lot of people that I've spoken to seemed to be disappointed by the ending. But I think it is one of the most beautiful endings I have ever seen in any film.
Spending one final day with his mother, where she did nothing but pay attention to him...it was very, very moving for me. I really related to it, because I have a strong connection to my own mother. It was so bittersweet, too. He had an amazing day with her, but it was the last time he'd ever be able to see her again. It was just incredible. It's one of the few movies that has moved me to tears; especially when the she told David that she loves him and that she always has. At that point, he was satisfied. That's all he wanted; to be loved by his mother.
So that's my basic thought on the film. I enjoyed the fairytale additions; I thought that they were particularly noteable, considering the context of the film (ie: humans being capable of "belief" and robots not...except David, anyway). One thing did bother me though.
When David's mother took him to the forest to get rid of him -- I thought that was awfully cruel. I don't care how much you don't want the child; putting anyone through that is terrible, especially a child. Of course, David is a machine and therefore that possibly buffers the mother's emotions a little. "He's just a robot." But look at his reaction when he knows what's going on...he's terrified and shocked. Who wouldn't be shocked, to find out that their mother wants to abandon them? That's a crushing thought that I hope nobody ever has to experience. Regardless of whether or not David was a robot, the fact remains that once the mother initiated his emotion toward her (by doing the code sequence), she established a connection between herself and David that can never be broken, until death. For anyone to dump someone else like that -- especially someone who looks at you as their parent -- is beyond comprehension for me. So, I found it odd that someone would do that. But maybe it's just me. I think that in terms of the story though, it works, because we're talking about the whole human versus mecha thing. David's father even reminds his mother that their son is just wires and metal behind those eyes and that face. So the whole situation makes sense in that context, but I still personally can't understand how a mother could do that to what is essentially her child.
Anyway, it's cool to see that you enjoyed the movie. It is actually something I should buy...you've reminded me now. It should be my next DVD purchase.
Hevn
The movie was good. I loved every bit of technology there is in that movie. The movie's concept of the future is exciting and makes me wanna live a long time to be there when those technologies come forth to existence. I admit I cried in the ending considering what the boy had to go through but it just seemed a little "out there".
Aliens? Not really my type for non-fiction. I think they're the ones who spoiled the movie.
. But I guess they pulled it off because of the feeling the scenes give to viewers . I just thought they could've delivered the ending more realistically. ^_^x Visual effects? Excellent.
James
Oh, I really liked the inclusion of the aliens. lol
I thought it made a lot of sense, for two reasons.
One, David was under that ocean for thousands of years...a very, very long time. And related to that, the aliens are there to demonstrate that mankind has become extinct. They need some intelligent species to replace mankind, if you think about it -- otherwise, David isn't going to have that experience with his mother or anything. The movie would have just ended at that point. I also loved the fact that the aliens were compassionate beings. They weren't your typical "blow up the earth" type of aliens. They came across as being enlightened and generous, which I think really fit in well with what was going on.
Hevn
Did you notice how the aliens were nicely done? I think the effects and elegance they did to it was really fascinating. From what I remember, the aliens were just looking for any information about humans. I may be wrong in saying that they need David for their research and how he reacts to situations. Anyhow, David is special and equally important to them because he is the only living proof that humans did exist... or robots closely related to humans...or whatever ^_^x Lol. They don't need to blow up the earth I guess... there was nothing to gain from it anyway. I guess they're just really interested in the human species. ^_^x
Also, the movie's story is one that people won't forget that easily coz it just touches the heart. I guess that's what's impressive about it. Loved this one:
"Keep me safe"
eleanor
When this movie first came out, all I heard was that it was a horrible movie. Then I watched it...I went ballistic on my friends who thought it was the worst movie ever. I adore this movie to bits. Well, first of all, Haley Joel Osment's performance blows out any other kid performance I've seen. [ok, so I haven't seen the Whale Rider yet. So shoot me.] Anyways...thay kid that died in the beginning was such a lame [curseword], it made me hate Lizzie McGuire even more. *raises eyebrow* Second of all, A.I. was the first movie I saw that dealed with this subject/genre, so I fell in love with it right away. And thirdly, probably most important, is that it had a great impact on me. I think I cried at one point...that circus or whatever that mutilated robots horrified me. Reminded me of rednecks running around doing the stupid things they do. I could very well picture that being in the south, lol. And I am a sucker for happy endings. :toothy:

But just for the record
those were advanced robots, not aliens.
