Like my paternal grandmother who thinks that all Muslims think they need to kill people to get to heaven and that gay people can be reprogramed because she saw it on TBN. Pity, if you think about it... if that was the case with the 6 point billion something number of muslims on the planet today, wouldn't you think there would be a whole lot less other people? (or, is it the case where thinking really doesn't come in to play?) As for I, something that really bothers me is when people do stupid things that can affect many other people besides themselves with the disasterous consequences... like, oh, driving drunk for example. I'm in Jersey city with some relatives now for about a month or so (as opposed to my home in rural Pennsylvania), and last night my uncle and I almost got side slammed by a drunkard driving a rented moving truck as we approached the brooklyn bridge. I know that there are drunks everywhere, including where I live, but in the crowded congestion of the city it seemed to make it that much worse to me... tsk tsk. The worst part is that people / society passivly agrees with the whole situation... think about it, how many people think it normal to have all the bars we do, or to think it's ok to have a round or two (or more, in some sad cases) after work, or before hitting the road? That information, as you know, is pretty out there and not a valid representation of Muslims as a whole. Do you think it would work if I told her that Islam is the fastest growing monotheistic religion yet the population hasn't diminished? Sadly it's really a case of where she only considers one side of a topic and only believes what she thinks is right. So in some ways it is a case where thinking doesn't come into play because she only lets herself think one idea and that's that any religion but hers is wrong. That comment coincidentally brings me to another thing that gets on my nerves, peopel who think what they believe is the only correct way to believe. This can range from something minor like an opinion on a movie to someone's religious beliefs. [b]people who can't go the speed limit in decent driving conditions on the expressway[/b] I'm not asking for much, just go atleast 55 MPH when you drive on the regular highways in NYS and if the speed limit goes up to 65 MPH then by all means go 65. [b]People who tailgate[/b]-My advice to anyone who has someone tailing them is to slow down. Yes, I know it sounds like doing the above. But most of these people are driving 20 to 30 miles over the speed limit in the first place and it won't kill them to slow it down a bit. And if they throw you the bird well...that's up to you what to do next. THat gets on my VERY last nerve. I have some "black" friends, although, I never look at them that way, and I know if I'm applying for something and she's applying for the same thing (let's say a job) and she has more qualifications, what am I supposed to think if I get the job, is it because of the fact that my skin is white? After 9/11, I had heard from family in other parts of the country that racism and race profiling was rampant, and I'd heard the stuff on the news, but none of it was in the rural Pennsylvania area where we lived thank goodness because we'd been there for such a long time (not to mention we were related to most of them... try tracing a rural valley grove of family trees and you'll know what I mean). But, here in the NY / NJ area it was completely different: My uncle told me that his car and work vans (he does construction / contracting) were repeatedly searched so many times he lost count. (yeah, they're really going to try something dangerous with building materials used for making Dunkin Donuts... come on.) At the worst point, he said that authorities were quite literaly picking up hundreds of people and hauling to prison just for looking Middle Eastern, right off the street! Keep in mind that there more than alien immigrants or hapless tourists, they also picked up American [I]citizens[/I] and held them without pressing charges, with holding access to lawyers, or even telling some of their families that they were being held. For months. That means that in the eyes of the law, it could very well have been any one of you guys (or women) who were being carted away who are residents of the US. Think really hard about that for a second... One of my uncles was deported, and the other, a father of 5 kids, all of them citizens, with an american wife (who happened to hail from one of the Carolinas or Virginias) was denied citizenship, even though he passed the test. He's thinking of packing up and leaving soon, to go back to Egypt... nobody should have to take any of that. Is that the kind of country that you would feel proud of saying you live in? It pretty much denies American citizens due process simply because of their religion or ethnic background. Or even more fun being denied citizenship because you came from one of those 'Axis of evil' countries. Can you say: "Bush is an idiot"? I knew you could. But the American government is no stranger to doing stupid things. Right after Pearl Harbor millions of Japanese Americans, many who had been born in the US, were arrested and put into internment camps because of their ancestry. I honestly don't know what those people's problems are, but I have a fairly strong idea that they're just simpletons from a simpleton town, with simpleton friends and simpleton minds, and simply lack the capacity and background for intelligent cinematic critique. I know they're entitled to their opinion, and if they had a respectable opinion, I'd respect their opinion. But the fact of the matter is, they wouldn't know what Fellini's 81/2 meant, and certainly wouldn't be able to discuss the finer points of 2001. Hell, they have trouble holding their own in a discussion about horror movies without getting their panties in a twist and falling back on "It's my opinion." Those people irk me to no end. [b]Old Black Women:[/b] To start this, I'd like to say that taking Comp 101 and 102 does not adequately prepare someone to take any high-level English course. This is evidenced by Old Black Women. This past Spring, I had taken a Literature In English II, and the previous Fall, Sociology of Education. At Rutgers, there is a very diverse student body, and some of my classmates are going back to school, some of whom are in their late 50s/60s. Now, some of these older students are incredibly sharp and "with-it," like a very dear friend of mine, Pat. I think Pat is about 60 or so, and she has grandchildren. But she has a literary/interpretive skill that rivals or supercedes those who are the "normal" age. She can more than hold her own in a class debate on Shakespeare's use of Women's Lib in Othello, and it's quite awesome. Now, where do Old Black Women fit into this? Old Black Women are racist as hell. This was made clear in Sociology of Education. No matter what the topic at hand was, these OBW would constantly chime in with inane chatter and accusations like, "You know, we be skirting the issue here. We all know that the root of the problem is a matter of race." That was the extent of their contributions. As if that wasn't bad enough, flash forward to Lit in English II. Dr. Hoffman, a middle-aged, white English professor, has a very distinct flavor to his teaching method. He seems droll on the outside, but that's merely a stage presence. If you were to get to know him and be open to how he teaches, you would find him to be an awesome instructor. And, many of the students did find him awesome. But lo and behold, which student couldn't stand the class? That's right, the Old Black Woman. Perhaps it's because she thought a Walt Whitman poem was about men peeing, when in reality it was about [i]ejaculation[/i]. This woman would leave during the break and not come back for the last half of the class period. We only had class one night a week, for about 3 hours, mind you. She would regularly complain about how she hated Dr. Hoffman, about how she wrote a 12 page paper just to annoy him, when the paper only had to be 6 pages. Based on her inane chatter in the class, and her utter lack of comprehension of the material, my classmates and I could not help but laugh our ***** off when she told us this. If she's that dense when she speaks, what in the hell could her paper have been? Utter crap, lol. So...yes. Another thing that gets on my last nerve is Old Black Women. Another thing that annoys the crap out of me is that anime is $20-$27 bucks/DVD and you get 3-5 episodes per disc. Talk about a rip-off. There's a reason why Family Guy and the like sold like crazy (besides being good shows)--they were priced reasonably. WB finally figured it out, and I can't wait until ADV and Bandai and the rest of those bastards do. Then there's both of our presidential candidates. If Dolph Lundgren ran with Van Damme as his running mate, I might vote for [i]them[/i] over the clowns we have to choose from at this point. But sadly both of those fine gentlemen weren't born in the US. :( Hmm, ultra-conservatives and very religious people annoy me a lot too. And people who say really stupid crap. The other day we were talking about time travel for some reason, and everyone said a "what if," as in what would we do if we went back in time. I said I'd do something really major like prevent the killing of Julius Caesar, because that would so drastically change the course of history there's NO way to predict what the present would be like. In response, a friend of mine said he'd kill the virgin Mary while she was pregnant! Holy crap what a morone! That's not even funny to say, it's so stupid.
