Ben
Mount Gaia. Once it was the most glorious sight a monster could see, and monsters from around the world would travel for years just to see it. Now it sat shrouded in mist, with its peak totally invisible to the naked eye. The sky around the mountain swirled in a constant spiral; a dizzying effect if one stared at it too long. Dain watched from behind a tree as a line of wagons came into view, carrying food and supplies across the barren landscape towards the silent mountain. Assorted Spellcasters lay in wait behind him, their hands, staffs, or whatever other implements they possessed already beginning their spell weaving. On the Dark Paladin's command, they would attack. The wagons were being driven by Psychic Kappas, amphibious creatures with a small resistance to enemy attacks. Tongues too long for their mouths lolled out of the Kappas' beaked face. Sparse purple hair decorated a small, vulnerable head. They are weak, Dain thought. Easily overcome. Expendable. The Dark Paladin ordered the attack, swinging his mighty bladed staff forward. Silently he charged, with others behind him shouting savage war cries and bellowing incantations. The assorted mass of Spellcasters unleashed their attacks at the hapless supply train, and it had appeared their ambush would be a success. Dain realized his mistake far too late. Out of the sky emerged a giant slithering mass of metal plates. With curved, glowing red eyes it glared at the ambush party, and settled above the supply wagons. All of the Spellcasters' magic attacks ceased to exist when they reached the Kappas and their entourage. Magic was useless against a Metallizing Parasite-Lunatite. A sudden mist blew out from the base of the mountain, and started to enfold the valued resources in its shadow. A Sorcerer of the Doomed stood nearby, uselessly flailing his staff. "What do we do?" he quickly asked the Dark Paladin. "Our magic is useless against the Lunatite!" "Send in the Maha Vailos to attack the wagons. Their Axes of Despair should make quick work of Kione's supplies." "What about the rest of us?" the skeletal sorcerer inquired. "Follow them in and attack when the Lunatite is destroyed." Dain replied. Then he ran off into the mist. Suddenly, out of the shroud of water particles emerged a Fenrir, its mouth agape and drooling. Dain quickly cut it down, but noticed that several packs of them were present in the concealing mist. He could hear the screams of hapless Spellcasters as they fell to the ravenous river dogs. Dain ran onward towards the hulking Lunatite in the sky, felling more Fenrirs as they ran in to stop him. A Metal Fish stood just ahead of him, beneath the Lunatite. Dain jumped atop of the aquatic machine and leapt from there to the Lunatite's back. The metal monster bucked beneath him, sending Dain hurtling down its elongated spine. He managed to slip one of his hands in between the plates, though, and clawed his way back up the creatures back. When he reached the head, he pulled back his great bladed staff and drove it through the creature's head. It bucked violently and fell to the ground, and Dain felt his magic once again flow through him. "Giant Trunade!" he thundered, unleashing a great whirlwind. The mist shrouding the supply train vanished, and the Fenrirs suddenly became more than just shadows of the mist. They stood starkly out against the dark wasteland they stood upon, and the Spellcasters made quick work of them. A Dimensionhole was quickly erected, and the injured were sent through immediately to receive care at the nearest Alliance camp. "Nice try, Kione. But you'll not catch me unawares next time." As if in response to his remark, a jet of flame erupted from one of the higher regions of the mountainside. Dragons were coming. "Let's move out." he ordered tersely. The Dimensionhole was closed, and the Spellcasters set off for home at a brisk pace. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ If you haven't already, please check out the Recruitment Thread before posting. Gavin
Alright let's get this show on the road. Sage's gazed was focused upon the troops who had made it back from the assault, they had been caught in a trap unforeseen and had paid a high price. He leaned wearily upon his staff, it was one of the few items he had carried with him through his life and had seen him through some precarious situations. A young Skilled White Magician was laying on the ground near him, his eyes gazed up at Sage, a mixture of fear and pain. Sage's eyes scanned the boy wondering if he'd survive the night, he laid his hand on the head of his companion trying to comfort him, before long however he saw the last breathe escape his lungs and dissipate into the air. Sage murmured slowly, an offering for the boy to find peace. He leaned upon his staff once again to find some source of comfort before meeting with Dain, he had great respect for their leader but sometimes he thought Dain could do with a few more years. He walked slowly towards the large circular tent that Dain inhabited, a pair of Skilled Dark Magicians standing guard, he waved his hand as they saluted, today was not a day for formality. His eyes took a moment to adjust to the lighting level before noting that there were in fact several figures at the table, they ranged from the Dark Magician to the elusive Strike Ninja and finally the Dark Flare Knight. Sage stroked his chin guessing he had come in on a meeting, there was one chair left empty on one side of Dain and Sage got the impression his entrance was not unexpected. Striding towards his seat he looked at the expressions of the faces of his counterparts, the Dark Magician was sporting an look of severe annoyance while the Strike Ninja's face was partially hidden and so unreadable. This led him finally to that of his young cousin the Dark Flare Knight, his face was unmistakable forlorn at their losses but there was something else in his face that Sage could not identify, before he could make a better guess a voice interrupted his chain of thought. Dain: Marshal Sage thank you for joining us, please take your seat and we'll continue the briefing...
Ben
The Dark Sage nodded, sagely, and sat down on one of the rough field chairs that the Spellcasters had brought with them. His bones creaked slightly as he eased himself down, and he rested his staff across his lap. "What happened?" he asked bluntly. "I blundered." Dain admitted sourly. "I should never have ordered a strike with only our Spellcasters. Among our kind, there are few who have worth outside of their magical prowess, and the Lunatite quite effectively rendered everyone useless." "Not everyone." the Dark Flare Knight murmured. Dain nodded in acknowledgement of his younger cousin. Flare had lost nearly all of his magical abilities in a fierce battle against a renegade faction of Machine monsters. A Spell Canceller robbed him of his spellweaving heritage. Rather than give in to despair, Flare took up a sword and shield for himself and continued to fight alongside his brethren in a different manner. In the raid on the wagons, many a Fenrir had fallen to his black and crimson sword. "What do we do now?" asked the Dark Magician irritably. "We've got a reduced force here within an hour's flight of Kione's fortress. If we stay here, we risk the possibility of being wiped out by a dragon attack." "We wait here under the cover of the forest until I receive word that Sengenjin's forces are in place for the next raid." Dain replied. "And how soon can we expect that?" demanded the Dark Magician. At that moment, the Strike Ninja walked in through the front flap of the tent. The tent's occupants started noticeably; none of them had noticed the elusive ninja leaving. Unperturbed by his less than warm reception, the ninja padded his way over to Dain and whispered something into his ear. Dain nodded, and then stood up. "Freed the Matchless is in place near Mount Gaia. We move now under cover of darkness. The Council meets at dawn three days from now."
DeathBug
A solitary figure slunk through the wreakage of the battle site, examing the remains of the battle. A remaining Fenrir, driven more vicious than normal by the death of its comrades, approached, bristling. The hooded figure simply stared at the wolf, glowing blue eyes peering from beneath the hood. "You can't be serious, dog," he said simply. "Leave me." The wolf approached, then stopped, sniffing the air nervously. It lowered its head and turned away, and the hooded figure, the Night Assailant, returned to his work. He knew that Magic users had been here; the air was still charged with their spells, almost electric and tangible. That was never in question. What he wihed to know was, who had lead the attack? What level of command had these supplies attracted. He kneeled at the corpse of the Lunanite, holding his hand over the wounds. He could feel it; the Dark Paladin. Once felt, the strange and powerful aura of the Paladin was unforgettable to a normal moster. To a skilled Fiend like the Assailant, it stood as a beacon to his precence. "Well, we've certainly attracted a celebrity, haven't we?" he asked no one. Kione would surely wish to know of this; the Paladin may still be close by. Keeping to the shadows, he head back to Mount Gaia.
Solo Tremaine
Darkness. He could feel it flowing through his veins, enshrouding his every movement. The dark metal of his armour almost looked invisible in the thick mist, his long cloak billowing into the opaque air behind him. The red edging of his armour made his approach look like that of a dragon striding its way through a smokey veil, searching for the chance to strike at its prey. His sword, with its blade of deep orange, cut a bright path through the mist ahead. He held it tightly in his right hand, his dark shield close to his body in his left. Behind him followed a small platoon of Dark Bladess, all anticipating a quick and bloody battle. The rocky path through the valley was treacherous- a few of his soldiers had already fallen in ambushes -but this mission had to go ahead. This was one of the paths towards Gaia Mountain. If they could destroy the groups of Kione's minions that surrounded the area they could gain a greater control of the villages he'd conquered. A 'crack' echoed through the valley up ahead. He froze. The soldiers behind him quickly arranged themselves into a tight wedge formation. A few tense seconds passed. Flare could see something flowing down the side of the mountain in front of them, towards where the rest of Dain's forces were. Explosions and screams echoed from the valley below- the onslaught had started. "Ready yourselves!" he hissed. Metal footsteps crunched the ground. Through the mist emerged a Giga Gagagigo, surrounded by eight Sea Serpent Warriors of Darkness. As soon as they spotted Flare and his troops, they charged. The Sea Serpent Warriors bunched together in a tight line, holding their axes out in front of them as they moved swiftly towards them. The Giga Gagagigo licked its metallic lips as it lumbered close behind them. "Advance on my mark!" Flare barked, readying his sword and shield. The swordsmen tightened their formation, gripping their swords tightly. The axes of the Sea Serpents were barely metres away now... "Charge!" The wdge formation rammed into the middle two Sea Serpents- Flare broke directly through and the Blades just behind him sliced their blades through their heads with sickening ease. The rest of the serpents split and panicked whilst Flare's soldiers at the back peeled off to attack them inside the range of their axes. Flare and five Blades faced the Giga Gagagigo, whose mechanical fists clenched threateningly. "Time to die, vermin!" Gagagigo roared. Immediately, Flare lunged forwards, narrowly avoiding the punch of the gigantic creature. One of the Blades was hit in the chest and flew into the valley wall, his armour obliterated. Another went for his leg. It sliced open a patch of skin and the creature let out a furious scream, reaching down and impaling him on its claw. Flare swung his sword over his head and plunged it into the unprotected lower back of the leviathan lizard. thrusting it up its spine and into its ribcage. It wretched and whirled around, knocking over a further two Dark Blades and a Sea Serpent Warrior. Eventually, after several moments of thrashing, it collapsed to its knees. The last Sea Serpent was executed and Flare pulled the blade from Gagagigo's flesh. It let out a final sigh, spitting oil and blood from its mouth and fell, dead, onto the ground. The armoured knight looked around him. Six of his unit were left. It wasn't enough... * * * He watched the Dark Sage lower himself into the field chair and listened to the tactical conversation the Dark Realm leaders were discussing. Their losses were too heavy to try and sustain the front line here. Had the Red Eyes not joined Kione, they might have been able to launch an aerial assault, or at least gain a better view of what Kione's stronghold looked like. "I blundered," he heard Dain murmur, almost spitting it from his teeth like some kind of vile drink. "I should never have ordered a strike with only our Spellcasters. Among our kind, there are few who have worth outside of their magical prowess, and the Lunatite quite effectively rendered everyone useless." "Not everyone." Flare murmured. Flare let his mind wander. He wasn't a tactician, but was happy to follow orders given to him and develop them once he knew the situation. The battles he'd fought in had come at quite high a price. He didn't want to make any more mistakes. He started at Dain's address to the group. "Freed the Matchless is in place near Mount Gaia. We move now under cover of darkness. The Council meets at dawn three days from now." Three days. Would it be enough? Kione's forces grew in intensity by the hour, while with each battle they entered into it grew harder and harder to gain recruits. Whilst the meeting continued, Flare dismissed himself and left the tent, to be greeted by his fellow Lieutenant the Archfiend Soldier. "Long time, no see, Flare..." he hissed.
Ben
Dain hurled a Thousand-Eyes Idol into the air. In the darkness of the night, it was unlikely that such an act would give away their position. The Idol's eyes, however, were attuned to the dark and could see in every direction at once. It was an invaluable scouting maneuver, and caution was necessary at all times. The Fiends came out at night, and not nearly all of them had pledged their allegiance to the Alliance's cause. The Idol came falling down into the center of the forest clearing, blinking its many eyes. One of the Skill Dark Magician's caught it, and brought it to Saggi the Dark Clown. Saggi was the only one among them who could interpret the winking of the Idol's eyes; it's only form of communication. Saggi signed back a couple times with vague hand movements. The Idol's blinking grew more agitated, and Saggi grew slightly worried. "It says that there is a large squad of Troop Dragons heading to Mount Gaia a couple miles to the west of us; their outermost scouts will surely detect out movements. Also, various Fiends are closing in behind us. They've got Giant Orcs with them." Saggi looked up. "We're in trouble, guys." Dain quickly went through the spells that he knew, searching for one that would be most effective in this situation. "How much time do we have?" "The first of them should be here in half an hour. The Idol says the Skull Knight was moving particularly quickly. He should arrive earlier." Fantastic. A Skull Knight. Who knows what else they had coming? Besides the Idol, he amended ruefully. But they didn't have time to get an exact account of every Fiend in the forest. They needed to get out of their, and fast. "Sage!" he called. He'd need some help with the spell he had in mind. It was very difficult, but would work out quite nicely. If it worked. "Yes, Dain. What is it?" Sage said, having carefully tread his way over. "I'm going to need your help with a spell." Dain outlined the plan quickly, and then ordered all the Spellcasters to form up close together. They did so, eying their two leaders warily. Several questions had been brought up, but there speakers were quieted. So they all stood together, numbering probably slightly less than forty monsters. "Ready Sage?" Dain asked quietly. "Ready." The two mages stood solemnly. Sage faced the nervous group of monsters ahead of them, and Dain was looking off into the west, a very faint pull of magical energies keeping him aware of the Dragons' whereabouts. Dain concentrated his magic on his bladed staff, and Sage held up his wooden staff. At the exact same moment, the two mighty Spellcasters cast the spell. "Creature Swap!" ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Flare watched from his hiding spot just outside the clearing. He was no stranger to magic, and he suspected this sort of move from Dain. Two different hostile forces in close proximity; hostile to each other, even. It fit too nicely to pass up. Their force of Spellcasters had been teleported several miles to the west of their original location, and the dragons had been transplanted in their place. So, instead of their hardened Spellcaster troops, Dain and Sage faced a veritable horde of Troop Dragons, with Fiends on the way. What would happen to them? Dain's plan became apparent, as his staff began to glow. The ethereal glow continued to spread, though, until Dain's whole body was infused with a misty purple aura. He had momentarily forgotten, Dain took strength in the presence of Dragons. And with so many present at one time, Flare would hate to be against him. Dain crouched down for a moment, and then leapt forward and swept his blade in a long, smooth horizontal arc. The staff's end sheared through a good dozen of the Troop Dragons, and the aura of force around the blade injured several more. He cut through them with great swaths of the staff, the Dragons putting up a pitiful resistence to his magical onslaught. But still, more kept on coming. From nowhere, it seemed, the force continued to swell despite the enormous casualties Dain was inflicting. BAM. Flare turned quickly to see a Giant Orc, it's bestial frame outlined by the magical flare of Dain's battle. The Dark Sage was off to one side of it, having been narrowly missed. Flare stepped out of his concealment to aid the elderly magician, but was grabbed from behind and swung around. His blade swung instinctively, finding itself ground against the cold steel of another sword. The Skull Knight hissed.
DeathBug
The Assailant blended into the night shadows, waching Dain's battle unfold. In the dark, it was easy to blend into the Spellcaster ranks unnoticed, and by tracking their magical auras instead of relying on sight, the Assailant could easily navigate the area. In an open battle, he could never hope to best Dain, nor the Sage or the Flare Knight. Fortunatly, that wasn't his intention. He knew full well that the three of them together posessed enough power to destroy this war party, although he hadn't expected the hostile fiends. Rather than attack the brain, the Night Assailant was going to gouge their eyes. The Thousand Eyes Idol was their long-distance scout; with it dead, they'd be helpless and isolated. As the chaos reigned about him, the Assailant moved forward, oblivious to the carnage. The freakish scout was in the back of the party, but when one was as dark as the shadows around him, one had no problem bypassing the other Spellcasters. He couldn't sneak up on the Idol, of course, but he could get within striking distance before it realized what was happening. The Assailant drew his blade and struck.
Gavin
Well since Ben has sorted out what he wants people to do I think we should proceed. Sage's eyes widened as he gazed upon the hulking beast that was Giant Orc, it was at least twice his size and could probably rip Sage limb from limb with little difficulty. He would've scanned the creature in greater detail had it not been for the fact that it's giant bone club was being swung in his direction, despite his age Sage managed to role to avoid it and rise to fact the creature again, his Lightforce Sword in hand. The creature knew that Sage was of greater power that it and bellowed in a coarse, guttural voice for what Sage knew were more than likely reinforcements, one Giant Orc he could defeat with little trouble but a hoard could well over power him. Taking the initiative he mustered as much strength as he could to leap over the great savage, the Orc must have been surprised by the old mages strength because it could only look with a furious glare as Sage vaulted clear over him. However Sage had misjudged the giant brute's speed as he felt it's great club impact upon his back, hurled into the air he landed some 15 feet away, crashing into the ground he writhed in pain. Sage knew what he had to do and he knew he had to do it fast, channelling some of his vast magic ability into a healing spell he knew Sage rose and used the rest to construct a trap, which he hoped to lure the giant oaf into. Whatever it's speed Sage knew the creature was not too smart, however it was still at least 10 feet from the trap so he had to get it's attention, however fatal that might be... Sage: Hey you, [Coughs hoarsely]] you hulking lump of stupidity. In can't understand why Kione keeps such idiots in his service. The Orc had obviously got Sage's message as it began to bellow deafeningly, beating it's bone-club off the earth, Sage watched as the mammoth beast stomped it's way towards him. "Just a little closer" he thought before hearing an ear-splitting shriek as he watched the goliath fall headfirst into the trap he'd prepared. He slowly rose himself leaning upon his sword as he walked over to where his foe had fallen, peering into the pit he saw the creature sprawled out upon the bed of spikes and acid. He grimaced slightly for what he'd been forced to do, before deciding to move on before more of it's brethren decided to drop by for the party. Making his way through the forest his back still ached from the injury given to him by that Orc but thanks to his knowledge of healing spells it began to feel better, his train of thought was broken by the loud crash of steel not fair from his position. Foregoing logical thought he raced towards where the sound was emanating, upon reaching it he observed as his young relation Flare faced off against not one but three Skull Knights. Arching his fingers together at his forehead he muttered an ancient incantation hoping it would help save Flare. Sage: CHANGE OF HEART [Blasts a ball of energy at one of the attacking Skull Knights] Flare: SAGE, GET BACK !! Sage watched as one of the Skull Knights began to grip it's skull before submitting to Sage's control, using his new found weapon he had it engage in battle with one of it's fellow knights before watching the two disappear in a blaze of light. He only hoped Flare could handle the rest on his own because Sage would be of little help.
Solo Tremaine
Flare held his shield and sword ready as the two remaining Skull Knights approached. From the left, the third blundered torwards its percieved enamies, whirling its lethal sword through the air in an attempt to hit something. Change of Heart was powerful magic, but without proper control, it left the victim with little physical abilities of its own. Flare braced himself as one of the SKull Knights threw a punch in his direction- it slammed into the black shield, driving Flare into the damp grass. The metal creaked- sparks flew in all directions. The second Knight was immediately behind and was about to take his sword to Flare's legs when the warrior's unwilling ally careened into the fiendish figure, bashing him aside. The Skull Knight let out a howl of fury and lunged back- whilst the third was distracted by their struggle, Flare deftly rolled away and re-poised himself to attack. He leapt forwards, the red blade of his sword glinting blood red in the dim light. It struck home, embeding itself between the Skull Knight's shoulder blades. It shrieked in agony and burst into wild convulsions, knocking Flare to the ground, minus his enchanted weapon, still stcking out of the dark creature's flesh. Having beheaded the incapacitated Skull Knight, the remaining creature licked the oozing dark liquid from his lips and gave Flare a murderous stare. It grunted, grinned wickedly and began its charge forwards, sword held out like a lance, aiming directly for Flare's head. Flare picked himself up and sprinted acoss the forest clearing, dodging past the rampaging creature and skidding to a halt near the dead SKull Knight. Its redundant weapon lay on the ground, bent by its aggressor. The second SKull Knight, with Flare's blade slowly tearing through its body, dropped to the ground, gasping for breath. Flare picked up the unbalanced sword as best he could and held it in front of him. Feeling the muscles in his arm start to strain with the weight of holding it, he dropped his shield and took it into his second as well. His defences were lowered, but until he ensured that Sage was safe he would fight with everything he could. "Insidious fool!" The Skull Knight wretched. "You dare take hold of a Skull Knight's blade? I'll destroy you for that!" Flare held the sword by his side, gripping it as tightly as he could with both hands. "Try it."
Ben
Dain cut through another dozen or so Troop Dragons. Fighting them was so tedious. His power was raised exponentially from their great multitude, but on the other hand, they seemingly could not be eradicated. So, it was a bit of a stand still if left to hand to hand combat. The Troop Dragons couldn't do any real damage to the supercharged Paladin, and Dain could not overcome the self-supplenishing army. Out of the corner of his eye, Dain could see Flare square off against the Skull Knight. Dain couldn't tell what he was wielding, but it didn't seem to be his normal sword. A Troop Dragon got a lucky shot in and struck Dain in the eye. He hissed with pain, and discharged a wide pulse of energy that drove the Troop Dragons back. They flew back a bit to regroup, and then surged forward again. "Ergh. Enough of this!" shouted Dain. He quickly scratched a diagram in the ground with the tip of his staff. "Dragon Capture Jar!" The markings on the earth flared with a sudden blue light. The earth itself rose up and changed shape, to form a large jug with the face of a Dragon depicted on its front. Dark reddish energy whipped out from the top of the container, and blasted the Troop Dragons. they were all drawn, clawing and shrieking, into the depths of the container. When the last one was in, an earthen lid slid into place over the top of the jar. Dain picked up the jar and tucked it under his arm. Dain went over to where he had last seen Flare, and found him standing over the body of his fallen enemy. The Skull Knight had been sheared in half, from shoulder to hip, with another Skull Knight's sword. Flare was resolutely pulling his own sword from the corpse of another. Sage was leaning against a nearby tree. "Surrender, or die." came a rasping voice. Dain half-turned to face the speaker, partially obscuring the Capture Jar on the other side of his slim frame. It was a Lesser Fiend, and he had a gand of other monsters with him. Two Giant Orcs, a couple Newdorias, many Souls of the Forgotten, Mystics Clowns, and Feral Imps. More Fiends were emerging from the woods behind the Lesser Fiend, as well. "Join us, and fight Kione. Save our world." Dain's offer was summarily ignored. The Fiends licked their lips in anticipation of tearing the three Spellcasters to pieces. And then perhaps eating the pieces.... "Kione is nothing to us. We care nothing for the world, nor the things in it. We survive. That is what matters." The Lesser Fiends seemed to be the only articulate creature among them. "Fine then. Let's see how you handle just a paltry bit of his forces!" Dain hurled the Dragon Capture Jar across the intervening space towards the Fiends. The Jar shattered, releasing hundreds of angry Troop Dragons that set about attacking every monster in their path. Which were Fiends. Dain hurried towards Sage, and looped his arm about the old mage's shoulders. Flare took to the other side, and the three hurried off into the night to rejoin the other spellcasters. Gavin
Sage could feel his strength returning, he may have been old but his strength as a Spellcaster was second to only Dain. As the ran he wiped his brow of sweat that had accumulated in his previous battles, Dain and Flare still held him as the moved but he was soon able to run by himself without aid. The three Spellcasters moved quickly through the dark forest in which they had been trapped, Sage could hear the loud grunting and shouting of Kione's forces behind them but hopefully they'd get out of the forest before having to engage in battle again. Gripping his sword tightly Sage flung it as hard as he could into a bush coming up on his left, an inhuman scream cried out before becoming silent, he moved over and pulled his sword from the chest of a Man-Eater Bug before hearing a loud laughing coming from the area around them. Several Armor Exes and Fiend Megacybers stepped forth, grinning with their intent more than clear, the lead Megacyber spoke in a harsh metallic voice, it sent a small shiver down Sage's back. Lead FMC: You are captured, surrender and your death will be quick.
