Hevn
So I am curious. I just want to survey people. I think it will be helpful to all RPG makers. What RPG genre do you like and why? I'm asking for something that would really interest you. Add to that maybe you guys can create an RPG wish list or what you like and don't like in an RPG. Here's mine to start. Genres: Silliness and a little bit of everything. Mainly comedy with a touch of romance, action, mystery, horror, perversion, or anything. I'm thinking of a light-hearted RP like Solo's current one but I want it well outlined since RPs like these tend to move away from the main plot. Dark Mystery. Something like searching or fighting a powerful unknown. It will be a difficult RPG, heh. I like it if it has mature and sexual content :tasty: Elementals, Gods, Angels and Demons. Now a lot of people like this genre but I personally think that this genre should be innovated. Massive amount of RPs are of this type but there's seems to be little distinction in each of them. It's always the same thing, elementals in the medieval era. Bah! What I like: Quality sign-ups and posts. Whatever the genre is or no matter how short or long the RP is going to be, I want quality posts. Not that my posts are of good quality but I believe they're satisfactory. Medium sized posts. Too long posts makes me lose interest while too short ones makes me go "That's it? Why bother posting?". Unless of course the content of that short post is really interesting. Same goes with sign-ups. Creators take charge. Just enough like how James is doing with Kill Adam. Not too power hungry and not too lax. What I don't like: Members quitting. And not saying it. A quick and polite PM to the creator will do for whoever's sake! When people quit an RP and don't say a thing, others just lose interest. Besides, what do you want the other members to do with your character? Owners abandoning RPs. I'm really impressed of what Balmon did to O Fortuna. Though it met it's sudden end, he faced it and admitted to everyone that it has already met it's downfall. Some creator don't do that. They just leave and dump the thread and another sad RP lies around the Square untouched, deserted, forgotten. Wish: Just a couple. I hope every RPG survives to the end and I hope people will take the challenge of finishing every RPG they make or are involved with. ^_^x My... this is one colorful post.
Balmon
Basically - I agree with everything `hEvN stated above (especially that extremely nice bit at the end). The one thing I would add on though, is that I quickly tire of RPGs chockful of magic and elementals. I love the medieval genre, but when people start tossing in buckets of fireballs and lightning-encased elves, I am immediately repulsed. I think Tolkein did it best with a minimal amount of magic; if there was magic, it was tastefully done and in given out in moderate doses. Frankly, I'm also annoyed by the endless stream of RPGs that pit Good vs. Evil in a BATTLE OF EPIC PROPORTIONS. While it often does work, there are just too many in OB which function off of this simplistic premise. Actually, after thinking for another second, the fact that the premise is simplistic is not necessarily a bad thing. It's the lack of imagination people have with regards to making use of the concept. That's all. Now you can all wait until my next RPG comes out and madly pick it apart for lack of imagination with regards to its usage of the Good vs. Evil concept :) Phil
James
This is an interesting question. When I think about the RPGs I've been in, I really have no idea what genres I truly prefer. But I can say that I generally don't go for the typical anime-style RPGs. I tend to try and go for things with a unique twist (Anime Stereotype Highschool is a cool example). I also like to generally go for things that are a bit different in concept. It's very hard to narrow that down into something specific though. I think these days, I tend to want to go for something a little more bizarre and colourful...but I have no idea what that is, exactly. (Most rambly post ever.)
Arcadia
I've always liked fantasy based stories, so those draw me in quite a bit. Especially when it has to do with elemental magic - I've kind of always preferred writing nature-based magic to straight-out fighting (mostly because I feel that I can't write it terribly well). If both are over done, as Balmon kind of stated, then it isn't nearly as fun. But I'm also partial to sci-fi, and the occassional comedy. A lot of times it'll just be that I need a break from one type, so I'll look for something completely different. When it comes to reading, however, I love it all. I'll read almost anything, actually. As far as the posts go, I like detail. I like it when the environment is thought about and made part of the story - it makes it more colorful in my mind, and much more enjoyable. It becomes more and more like reading an actual book than just an RPG, except it's been written in a few different perspectives rather than one single style. And as James mentioned, unique twists and concepts for the actual story itself are always a plus.
