I thought I'd create this thread to sort of gain some early publicity about it.

The basic system behind this RPG is going to merge Charles's Project Gamer, with Sage's Final Fantasy Survivor (Though it won't be based around the principals of a reality TV show, ^_~;)

Story Preview

Imagine this; Mario(Starring in many Nintendo games) has finally retired from the usual quests of saving his love. Princess Peach. from the clutches of Bowser. However, he still needs to bring in the cash to be able to survive in Mushroom Kingdom. Therefore, by merging his basic business skills and useful plumbing skills, he has started up his own little business known as Plumber Bros. Inc.

Any business's first aim is to survive, but there is one problem... Mario has no staff besides his brother, Luigi(Employee Trainer)! This is where you come in.

As the pipelines that run underneath the Mushroom Kingdom connect to many completely different gaming worlds, I will allow you to pick your favourite gaming character of all time and apply for the job. (Applications will be what the recruitment document takes form as.) Though, *Thanks to James for pointing this out*, you may only use characters from 8-16 bit gaming worlds. This is because, as also pointed out, there are many characteristics a player would have to take on, and this may be difficult to comprehend for others.

After the chosen employees are accepted, they shall all undergo the Induction Day, which will take them through training, etc etc.

However, all is not well! Later on in the RPG, it will become apparent that there is a diabolical evil, so evil, that it is evil enough to compete against Mario's tiny business. (Many twists and stuff will occur.)

But guys, just imagine it, this thing has so many possible amusing escapades that could happen. For example, the world may switch to a Paper Mario world.

Don't worry, there will be alot of fun stuff that play on your emotions.

---------------

I want this to be a very colourful RPG with the help of post backgrounds, logos, banners etc. And I want it to be colourful in the metaphorical sense so noone will get bored. I will also be incorporating many new and used systems, such as the chapter system. I will also be incorporating a payment system which could be used in the sense that when enough money has been saved up, new gadgets could be bought, or Mario could expand his business.

---------------

So let me know who is interested.

Well, as you know, I'm very interested in this idea. We've had several discussions about it on AIM and I'm behind it all the way.

I love the idea of a Paper Mario-esque RPG (2D characters in 3D worlds), as I think it could raise a lot of cool situations and funny moments.

Also, the idea of throwing together a few 8/16-bit characters into their own business is just too awesome to pass up. I can imagine them going on some crazy jobs -- and I can imagine the competition being hilarious.

Sounds like a truly fun, light-hearted and colourful RPG to me. Just what I'm interested in right now. I'm behind it 100%.

This sounds like a great idea Zid, just one question though...
When you said, "favourite gaming character of all time", do you mean from any console? My guess would be yes, from the information given. Yeah, just possibly clarify that...maybe, incase a few newcomers stumble across the Adventure Underground and find their way to this thread ^^;
Sounds like fun. Count me in. Once everything is ready, I'll sign up for it.
Nice banner for the RPG, by the way.

The banner was created by James, so he deserves all the graphics credit ^_~.

Well, the consoles must only support 8-16 bit games as stated in the first post. If I remember correctly, the SEGA Megadrive was 16 bit, the NES was 8 bit and the SNES was also 16 bit. I don't really think any other consoles in the next generation rsuch as the PSX, released games that were below 32 bit. Sure, a UK release of FF3(6) was ported onto PSX, but that had FMV's in aswell.

So you can have FF characters from FF6 and under if you wanted to. Or Mario, Metroid, etc etc. Just use your imagination, and I will verify.

I also don't want people signing up who know they won't stay committed, so everyone bear that in mind.

This is the kind of thing that needs to be posted on a regular basis. I can't imagine this being anything more than pure fun, and I'm a huge retro-fan so I'm in favour of the whole 16-bit thing. However, can everyone who applies join? Or does "Mario" have to choose all the decent applications, in a similar fashion to a real job?

Well, it all depends on your application (Which is basically your sign-up). If it's crap then obviously you won't be accepted. I will also be demanding a sample of writing quality and research a person's involvement in an RPG. If they appear to have just stopped posting or they have poor writing quality, then they will be denied entrance into the RPG. Simple as that.

I like the idea. You've got my vote on it, but the problem is that my net connection has been cut off momentarily. So you see, if I don't get it back then I can't become a solid contributor to the overall RPG, and therefore it wouldn't be as fluent.

I'll let you know. :)

Zidargh, you never cease to amaze me in the quality and sheer originality of your RPGs. I love the idea behind this, and I really mean that, this has to be one of the most interesting RPGs I've seen in a long while and I definitely want in.

The concept is great, I really like the idea of Mario and Luigi going into business in the Mushroom Kingdom as well as your plan to involve some evil competition against the fledgling business if just pure genius. I am particularly fond of the idea of this being set in an 8 to 16 bit era, as it is set in a time when most of us (well at last people of my age) first got involved in gaming, and brings back good memories.

I have a question though in regard to the actual set up of the RPG, when you said "I want this to be a very colourful RPG with the help of post backgrounds, logos, banners etc. And I want it to be colourful in the metaphorical sense so noone will get bored.". Does this mean that we'll have to design the backgrounds, banners etc. ourselves our will you be the one handling that ?

One last question, is Luigi available to play as ?, I just have to know this because he is without a shadow of a doubt my favourite Mario character.

I think this is a fantastic idea. I especially love the thought of putting a lot of color and html into it - that is by far one of my favorite things about Mario and to have that captured in the RPG is too cool for words. I would like to know how you plan to do that, exactly, as it's interesting to see how different people handle HTML in general. Would each post start with a banner or include some kind of Mario-related picture, or would you simply give the members that make it some kind of HTML coding for their posts?

Although I have a very limited knowledge of the Mushroom Kingdom in its entirety (at least compared to some people on the boards ^_~), and I'm not sure if I'd be able to participate or not, I'm at least behind the idea of it all the way. Consider me a fangirl. All the more reason for me to begin stalking you. >_>;

This RPG sounds absolutely astounding.
I don't believe the 'payment system' has been tried on OB before, but i think it coul be a wonderfully groundbreaking item.

I'm definitly interested and would definitly put an application in.

Holy Moblins! My stomach had butterflies from all these compliments, thanks so much guys.

I chose to do this in bold, because Arcadia's being silly. "Oi you! Arcadia girl! Of course you'll be able to participate! You're amazingly skilled so enough of your jibber jabberin'!"

*Ahem* You don't need to be highly knowledgable in the Mushroom Kingdom(Though some basic knowledge of the gaming worlds will be needed.) I mean, since when has one of the Mario games let you walk into a Plumbers business? This is what I want people to do. Merge together the different gaming worlds there will be, to your imagination. I want everyone to have a sense of freedom aswell as guidelines.

Right, I better get onto answering these questions of yours, fellow chums.

1.) In answer to Kane's(Lynx's) first question: Right, unless you want to design your own post backgrounds, then tell me. Otherwise, I have our very talented James working on it.

2.) Answer to Kane's second question: As much as it will be to your dissappointment, Luigi will not be a playable character. He is one of the most important characters at the start of the RPG, therefore, he will need to be controlled as an NPC mainly by myself to get the ball rolling in the direction I want it to. You can of course interact with him when possible, but nothing new can be introduced at first(Unless told), otherwise the flow will be completely jeopardised. It is not that I doubt your ability, it's just I feel every RPG needs some form of firm control at first. I'm sure you will all agree.

3.) In answer to Arcadia's question: Well, with the help of James, players will recieve a code for the post background. It has been done before, and I think this works very nicely.

I like what your saying, and I have indeed incorporated some of those ideas. For example, at the beginning of every chapter, there will be a banner or something to accompany the title of the chapter. Or, when a key event takes place, or a photograph is taken/given, the picture will be placed in the post or 'event manager'*. There is so much stuff to be done with HTML. Too bad it's so friggin' complicated., ^_~.

-----

I hope I answered your questions as fully as possible, without being too rambly.

I'm glad so many are taking an interested already. Any more queries?

*The 'Event Manager' is a little box stating the name of an important event, and a brief description. It may contain information about a job, who's involved, and the payment for example.

Ooh, cool, you got a thread up for this. This is the only RPG I've been really interested in for a while, and I'm eagerly awaiting it. But I'm having a hard to deciding what character to sign up as once it opens, heh.

One question, though: Would you allow GBA game characters? Technically the GBA is a 32-bit system, but most of the games resemble SNES games. I mainly ask this because if I were to sign up as Samus, I'd want to play as her post-Metroid Fusion so that I'd be able to include Adam. (Her ship's computer, for those of you that haven't played Metroid Fusion). That and the Fusion Suit also just looks awesome after it goes back to the classic Varia colors. ^_^

Oh, and if you ever want some help with the HTML stuff, I'd be happy to lend a hand. I'm not the greatest, but I've been getting better with HTML and CSS lately.

Did you say colorful? I'm in then! This seems like a very unique idea. Kinda what people should create more often. Luigi as an Employee Trainer could be hilarious too!

Desbreko, I imagine that GBA games would be fine. When Zidargh and I talked about this idea, we both seemed to feel that 2D characters would be necessary.

So anything that is 8-bit, 16-bit is fine. Obviously you'd class GBA games in the same category as a result of the sprite-based graphics that we're kinda going for.

And I think, based on our discussion, we wouldn't want to inject characters like, say, Tommy Vercetti from GTA. The main reason was because there are too many questions about that.

I mean, would Tommy swear at Mario or something? How would Mario react? It just kinda makes no sense at all to combine them. lol

So yeah, I hope that helps in terms of deciding on your character. Hopefully I'll have the post background work done soon. It may be possible to make varying colours and stuff too. We'll see how that goes.

Sounds great Zidargh!! Great idea. And compliments to James for the RPG banner, very cute!

I wish I could have my other Final Fantasy characters, but oh well.

Is there an estimated time that this'll be up? Then I can keep watch and be ready with a character. ^_^

So any characters that are 3D are out?

Hmmm......What character.....*goes off to think of a character.*

BTW: Sorry about the length. ^_^;;

Sure thing Des, great to have your interest. I'd really like as much help as possible as I can't just put all the pressure on James, so if you'd like to help, climb aboard! And yeah, James pretty much took the words out of my mouth, so yup, I guess GBA games are allowed.

Yeah Ohkami, the 3D characters of Final Fantasy are not available. But I feel that FF3(6) and below have some of the most developed characters in the series.

Okay, so...I've included the HTML in a text file attached to this page. Simply save/open it, copy the HTML and paste it into the post...then you're set.

However, if you want to change text colour or post background colour, you'll have to do the following.

First, visit this page: www.killing-bill.com/pbi

You can see a list of the colours there. Click on the one you want just to see how it looks and stuff.

Then, in the HTML, simply change the image filename to the one that you want (ie: substitute "pbi_yellow.jpg" for pbi_grey.jpg".

After that, you're going to need to change the font colour to suit the background.

You can do this with HTML (#FFFFFF is white, #000000 is black -- I imagine that these will be the primary colours to use for text).

You can also use vB code within the table, should you feel more comfortable with it.

So that's about it, really. Oh, and...remember to switch to the standard or enhanced post editor -- but not the WYSIWYG editor. The WYSIWYG editor will totally kill the HTML in your posts, because of the way it interprets spacing and stuff.

If you have any questions, you can use this thread to ask. ^_^

A very appropriate song, "God Only Knows What I'll Be Without You" is playing at the moment, lol. Very coincedental.

A huge thankyou goes to James for this, and I hope all of you appreciate his efforts, enthusiasm and talent. However, there is a very important thing going towards those who get in.

As restricted as it may seem, I know I said I want it colourful, but I don't want everyone changing their post colour willy-nilly. I will assign a post background to the accepted participants, and even though you may get the same as someone else, at least the RPG will seem like everything's in order.

Though, in the sign-up form, you will notice a "Requested Post Color:" section. Just go through the available colours and request your favourite. If reasonable, I will allow you to post in it if you get in.

Look for the sign-up thread tomorrow or the day after.

Obey the glove!

Yup, I've added a few more colours up there now...right now there are ten colours.

So, presuming that ten people are ultimately accepted, we should be able to get a colour for everyone.

I can also make more colours in future, so that's always an option.

Right all, due to the Prologue having ended in the RPG, I am now going to start using Arena Underground as a sort of suggestion/query center. Now, I am posting it here to bring this place to life. As I write the beginning post of the Training Day, you will have this little 'aside' to read and enjoy. And I would like to let you know that 'The Shell' is not Bowser or any other character who has been encountered in a game before.

Somewhere, Outside the Mushroom Kingdom?

Away from the majestic land of the Mushroom people, and deep in the Earth, was an area full of deceit, treachery, evil and lots and lots of money. The area was a headquarters of some sort, a labyrinth of rooms dug in and supported by large, steel girders and other objects. This area was of course the home to the yet-to-be-infamous, Dr. Papajojo, preferred to be known as, The Shell.

However, besides all the evil-ness and other sorts of atmosphere in the catacombs of this place, there was a room filled with insecurity and tension. Inside the huge room was an also huge metal table, with black suited corporates and executives from all over the place sitting around it.

?So, we lost one of our men in a bar brawl or fire did we?? Asked a being whose voice was deep and husky, representing the type of encounters this man had had throughout his life. The man sat in a huge, leather chair, faced away from his petrified employees. In front of him was a large screen, illuminating the room with a florescent blue glow.

?Uh, yes sir. Well, not just one, about three. The cause was apparently a liquor-toting chicken.? Replied a koopa who wore sunglasses and bore a scar on it?s left cheek. He then lifted up a remote control and pressed a large red button towards the screen. The screen then flickered showing a close-up of a drenched chicken, which was set on fire.

?Does someone want to tell me how this happened?? Questioned the shadowed being once more.

?Sources have said the fellow that caused it was under the influence of alcohol. Apparently, he was also covered in the stuff.? Replied a beautiful blonde woman, wearing a scarlet dress. Her sharp, blue eyes were capable of piercing through all mental defences.

?You think that makes the matter any less pathetic!?? Yelled the mysterious being in rage. ?In fact, it makes it even more pathetic. How many people do you know that were killed by a flaming chicken??

?They say it was ?El Chicken Diablo?.?Interrupted a turban-wearing elephant, which was floating on a magic carpet, perhaps in an attempt to calm the ?boss? down.

?Don?t try that ?guru crap? on me. So, can anyone tell me who this chicken is working for, or has attachments with??

The koopa pressed the red button again and rubbed his scar before clearing his throat. ?Our ?sentries? say that he works for a man named Mario, who resides in the Mushroom Kingdom. Mario has one sibling named Luigi, and appears to have recently opened up a small business named Plumber Bros. Incorporated.?

There was a pause and suddenly, the being in the massive seat raised his white gloved hand and ordered, ?Find out more about them. You know what to do. Send in, The Squad..?

I would also like you all to use this place as an opportunity to develop your character. Perhaps you could put background summaries, or even write stories that reflect on your character's pasts in some way. Go wild.
