Star Trek: Brightstar

I've been thinking about doing a 'Star Trek' RPG for some time now but I'm unsure whether I should. I'm thinking this because I've yet to see a 'Star Trek' RPG in the Arena so I don't if there is a fan-base for 'Star Trek' here on OB and thats why I've made this thread, to see whether people would go for a 'Star Trek' RPG.

The basic set-up would be like the TV Series of 'Star Trek'. The 'cast' would be the senior officers aboard the U.S.S. Brightstar during the later half of the 2380s so it's set after the Dominion War and after Voyager came home so there is more time and resources for Starfleet to explore the vast regions of space [Even the Alpha Quadrant has only roughly 1% of it mapped out].

It would be set out like a series meaning it wouldn't be a continueus[sp?] plot but divided into missions, or episodes, with 24 missions per year of the voyage, or 'seasons'. And my questions are:

1. If there are Star Trek fans here would you go for this?

2. Do you [Anyone, not just trekkies] believe this idea could work in the Adventure Square?

3. Would the 'episode' system work? [Think of it like James's Chapter system but a little different.]

If you have comments that don't relate to my questions feel free to post them, I welcome all comments.

Well as I have said to you before Bill, I think a Star Trek based RPG would do quite well here on OB. My main reason behind this is because it's only been tried once before, and though it was a bit weak it did manage to attract some of the Square's well known and respected role-players.

1. If there are Star Trek fans here would you go for this?

I think I've already answered this one, I'd personally love to see a Star Trek RPG created as it's never really been tried before.

2. Do you [Anyone, not just trekkies] believe this idea could work in the Adventure Square?

I've already answered this but again yes I think it would do very well in the Adventure Square with the right promotion and role-players in the RPG.

3. Would the 'episode' system work? [Think of it like James's Chapter system but a little different.

By this I'm guessing you mean the Episode System as featured in the most of the TV series, where a different adventure takes place practically on each show. I personally think it would work, as it would give people a set idea of what they could expect rather than just having to create a whole Episode from scratch. One piece of advice though would to set out a rotation for people to post so that someone doesn't end up writing a really good reply only to have some else beat them to it. Similar to Kill Adam you give the basic premise at the start of the “Episode and we work our way through collaboratively.

All in all I think this is a really good idea that could turn into a neat little series.

Frankly - I would love it. I'd jump on in a second.

That's all I gotta' say about that.

Oh wait. I think as long as it's run well, it should be a hit. However, I think it would be essential that the people posting have a fairly good idea of most of the Star Trek series.

Yes? No?

EDIT: I should rephrase... they should have a fairly good idea of some of the Star Trek series. I've watched most of the episodes of both ST: The Next Generation, and Voyager, but only a handful of Deep-Space Nine and the originals. I don't consider Enterprise as a worthy member of the Star Trek series.

It would save on a lot of explaining really.

As I said before, I think it's a great idea. I would most certainly join it (If I can, that is, lol). I haven't seen a lot of TNG or Deep Space 9, but I sure have seen all of Voyager about thirty times! (I'm sad enough to tape all the episodes on DVD's). I have a good idea of most things.... *hides*.

Anyway, I say go for it. It sounds like a hit, and after reading your bio you sent I think it sounds great. I say go for it. The mission/episode thing sounds great, but will the characters have some sort of break? Like in that one Voyager Episode, "11:59" was it? Or Bride of Chaotica, because they did have sort of "breaks" when there were no missions.

Overall I think a Star Trek RPG is a great idea.

I certainly agree with you on that point Phil. ENT is a good sci-fi just not a good Star Trek ^_^;;, but back to the RPG. Thanks for the feed-back, now I know I have at least three people interested in the idea [Which is more than zero ^_^;;] but what I need help with now is giving the RPG a premise. Not like a "These are the voyagers of the Starship Brightstar", nothing like. Something more along the lines of what the ship is/does and the overall mission for the crew.

I've already said that the players would only play the senior staff so there would only be nine or so people and the senior staff as I see it would be something like this:

Captain [CO]

Executive Officer [XO]

Second Officer [SO]

Chief Science Officer [CSO]

Chief Medical Officer [CMO]

Chief Enginner [CE]

Chief of Security/Tactical [COS/T]

Chief of Operations [COO]

Chief Helmsmen [CH] [Possible]
Thats all that come to mind right now, if anyone else has any they feel would be a good addition to the list feel free to recommend them.

I especially like how you changed your spelling of Chief halfway through... just covering all of your bases? :)

You're missing a super-smart non-biological entity that either desires human emotions or retorts with constantly sarcastic wit, and either an empath, or human with a complete lack of empathy... either of which must be utterly beautiful... what else... :D

Sorry - just a little humour for those who get what I'm saying.

I think the list is pretty succint. That's quite a knowledge you have of rank and designations...

As far as premise is concerned... they've done the ship lost in space bit... the exploring ship bit... the... hovering in space bit.... what can we do that's different? I think your best bet is to emulate TNG - maybe right in the middle of a war? You could toss it in just at the outset of a war, before anyone knows what's happening... um... cause I agree - a "These are the voyages of the..." wouldn't work especially well on an RPG, where people need some sort of direction.

To sum that whole paragraph up - I have no idea what you should do, and have no good ideas, but I agree with you that you should do something. :)

I should have given this more thought before I posted, but I'm getting anxious just thinking about this!

I think you got all the ranks, but you forgot the ECH (Emergency Command Hologram) :p (Blame my mum... she put a load of Star Trek Voyager episodes on DVD and forgot the episode titles and made me watch them... I didn't mind like, but I got very addicted to... certain... episodes).

Perhaps you could have people who aren't on the starship at first and are "picked up" along the journey. Like the Klingon provoking Seven of Nine, or the ship-almost-wrecker Kes! You know? People like that who end up joining Brightstar and earn a posistion there. I dunno...

I know I've posted a thread on this already but it doesn't seem to be gaining much attention so I'll relocate it to here. I would like to have some banners and graphics made for the sim along the lines of the title bar for the RPG and maybe some 'episode' graphics giving the name of the episode and perhaps a visual element as well. If anyone could please do that or maybe ask some friends I'd be very grateful.

I've already told yuo I thought this would be a great idea, mostly because its never been succesfully attempted before.
I'd love to participate and I'd like to give a shot at the banners/episode visuals aswell.

Okay the sign-up thread is coming along nicely and I'm just here to iron out a few details. The Brightstar is an Insignia Class Starship, info can be found here. The episodes will take place mainly in the Beta Quadrant whereas some will need us to go into the Delta Quadrant so this means we will be far from Federation Space [I know, I know, cries of Voyager fill the room].

As Vicky said there will be an 'off-episode' every so often in order for the crew to develop friendships and such as well as there being the dreaded character building episodes. I see most missions lasting around 150 posts, I know thats a lot but I must stress that you should only sign-up for this if you are willing to go the distance, it's likely to be a very long RPG.

If you have any questions please let me know.

I've updated the list of positions for the RPG:

Second Officer w/ another position [This is a duel role]

Chief Flight Control Officer [Navigating the ship and flight control operations]

Chief Communications Officer [Handles all transmissions aboard the ship]

Chief of Operations [Ensures all ship-board systems function correctly]

Chief Security/Tactical Officer [Ensures ship and crew safety and operates/maintains weapon systems]

Chief Engineer [Responsible for ship system maintenance and repair]

Chief Medical Officer [Ensures the physical health of all aboard the ship]

Chief Science Officer [Responsible for all scientific data the ship collects as well as monitoring the experiments]
I should also note we will be getting a Diplomatic Officer after the first episode but thats all a big secret with now so shhhh! :-p. I'll post this with the Adventure Inn thread as well but I don't see why it can't go here, it's a website giving info on the various roles of each position but you can ignore the stuff about reports to the CO and such because it's for a big sim called 'Bravo Fleet'.

 • 4 weeks later...
Hey all,

I apologize for my lateness - between performing Student Council duties for my school, moving into a new apartment, and working, I haven't had much time to even write my intro post. I'm in the process of doing that right now, and it should be up before the night's end.

Just a quick request - unless it's ABSOLUTELY necessary, could we hold off on the OOC comments? I used to use those liberally, but since they've introduced the Underground, I've found that this is the place to make ANY comments on anything you've posted.

Just a request... any thoughts?

Phil

Well as this is the Underground thread for Brightstar I suppose this is the place to ask questions about the RPG and the charcters, post suggestions or ask for help if you're a little lost. As First Officer I'd also like to see everyone posting more often as there's a danger of the RPG going stagnant which would be a shame as it's the first good Star Trek ever on Otakuboards. Balmon has made a good point too, an OOCs or questions should be diverted here.

---------------

Just also of note to everyone involved I made a mistake in describing the Advanced Weapons Pod, though in saying that there isn?t a description for an Advanced Weapons Pod so I?m just basing it off the description for a normal Weapons Pod. Bill and I discussed adding more firepower to the Brightstar and thought that an Advanced Weapons Pod would be the way to go, the Pod itself will be located on the centre of the saucer section just above Deck 1.

The Advanced Weapons Pod:

2x Rapid Fire Quantum Torpedo Turrets.
3x Type 4 Burst Fire Torpedo Launchers.
1x Tri-Cobalt Torpedo Launcher.

600 Quantum Torpedoes.
12 Tri-Cobalt Torpedoes.

Other than adding an Advanced Weapons Pod, Starbase 969 has also integrated 5 new Type XII Phasers into the Brightstar, brining the total number to 10. However there was only enough space for 3 of the 5 Phasers to be mounted into the hull, to overcome this problem 2 of the Rapid Fire Torpedo tubes had to be removed, brining down to 4 the number of Rapid Fire tubes. Overall the Brightstar?s armaments look something like this:

10x Type XII Phasers, total output 56,950 TeraWatts.
4x Rapid Fire Torpedo Tubes.
2x Rapid Fire Quantum Torpedo Turrets
3x Type 4 Burst Fire Torpedo Launchers
1x Tri-Cobalt Torpedo Launcher

1,400 Quantum Torpedoes.
12 Tri-Cobalt Torpedoes.

I also noticed that the Defensive Systems was incomplete for the Insignia, or possibly they had difficulty with the HTML. I?ve tried to match it as correctly as possible to what it probably is though I admit I might be way off as the total shield capacity is not given in most ships. We are given the total shield output on the Insignia Class though not the type of shielding she possesses, I?ve ventured the guess from the Avenger Class because of the fact that the Insignia?s shield output is roughly twice that of a Jupiter Class which has an Auto-Modulated Shield System.

Defensive Systems

Auto modulated high capacity shield system, maximum shield output 8,950,580 Terra Jules.
Ablative Armour Matrix (which I would assume is similar to that used by Voyager in her Series Finale).
Heavy Duranium/Tritanium double hull.

Well that?s about it, I hope people benefit from this or I?m going to go and kick my own *** for wasting time doing this.

No worries Kittychanann. But I agree that we're slacking slightly so I'll just tell you about what I want to happen. In the next few posts everyone will be aboard and ready at their post so the ship is ready to launch, once we have we'll get to the colony within two or so pages of posting and once we get there......thats a secret ;-) but you get the idea
