Okay..................
My mother is giving me 250 dollars to spend on what ever I want. ( I've had to babysit my brother and sister since the middle of may.... I HATE BABYSITTING THEM) and well I'm going to use it all on anime dvd's/manga books. I know I'm alllready buying Vol.1 of Wolf's Rain on dvd. So any Suggestions on what to buy?
My friends ( IRL) Say I Shouldn't 'Waste' it on anime..... I flipped them off.... They wanted me to buy girl-clothes... Nyahhhh Never.....

4 words... maybe 6

Ghost in the Shell: StandAlone Complex Episodes. OK - 7 (possibly 8 if you don't squish StandAlone together)

The first season - 26 episodes - came out on DVD... I think... a while ago.

GET THEM.

Any questions? PM

Coming from the Original Irish Bartender, I'll trust it. I was thinking about buying GS:SAC ( Ghost in the Shell: Stand alone Complex). I saw commercials for it on tv and I saw an ad in Shonen Jump. Thanks Balmon......

No no no no no - let's get one thing straight :)

I'm the Original Irish Bartender AND Asian Classical Pianist.

I definitely am neither the first Irish Bartender (and that's only because I work in an Irish pub, where everyone is Irish), nor am I the first Asian Classical Pianist (that doesn't require much explanation). What I probably am, though, is the first combination of both. At least, I've taken the title.

Glad the suggestion helped - I'm in love with the rhetorical, hilarious, witty, dialogue (DON'T GET A DUBBED version - I personally am a proponent of the original dialogue, with subtitles), the stunning visuals/animations, the complexity of the issues they discuss (among them, robotic implants in human bodies... and they don't just grace the issue - it's a real, honest-to-goodness central issue of the entire anime series), the complexity of the characters (their humanity, especially - which is funny, because... well... watch it), and last but NOT least, the amazing score. I cannot TELL you HOW well scored that series is. The music and visuals are SO well matched, it almost befuddles the mind. There are times in the series that can get you so emotionally worked up - in anger, or sadness - it's almost unbelievable.

OH - The other thing you should get - I happened to read this review of this anime movie the other night, when I was looking for something else, and at first I thought to myself... this sounds like a really stupid anime... why is it rated the best movie ever.... OMIGOD - I REMEMBER THIS.

And then it hit me. The Grave of the Fireflies. I saw it once YEARS ago in the middle of the night... I remember being amazed because though it was like 3:00 in the morning, and despite my tiredness, SOMETHING kept me up and watching this film about a young girl and her younger sister (I think a younger sister). I remember crying - or, as other guys would say, I might've teared up... - and thinking to myself... I need to get a copy of this. Years later, I still haven't, and I actually managed to forget about it. But since reading the review, which I came across through sheer serendipity, my search is renewed, though I don't think I'm going to have to look far.

That's all.

GitS:SC - and Grave of the Fireflies

Ack, I hate it when friends do that. Geez, who needs "girl-clothes" anyways?? Anime is SO much better. My suggestion: Get new friends

VanDread isn't bad...I just startd watching it. X, Akira, hmmm....Hellsing(kick *** vampire anime), theres alot to choose from. I always just go and look around reading the boxes and seeing what looks most apatizing. Cowboy Bebop is ways a good choice as well. But hey, here's my advice. DON'T TAKE A FREIND. They will find everythigng you want and you'll have to little money and to much anime. better just to go by your-self and miss a few things than to go find everything and have to put half of it back.

Vash IDK: Please try to stay on topic.

Trigun11: If you're thinking of getting the Stand Alone Complex Special Edition, wait a couple of weeks (at the very least). I don't know of any problems with the regular DVD, but the volume 1 SE currently comes with an inexcusable number of errors; the Japanese DTS is faulty, and the accompanying OST has several tracks which are either melded together or erroneously split.

In order to get the most mileage from your money, you might want to consider buying some inexpensive brick sets (TRSI's Boogiepop Phantom and ADV's Devil Lady are among the anime offered in this format). Don't purchase anything related to the Vision of Escaflowne--there's a cheap collection coming out sometime this fall--or Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040, which will soon be re-released with a very low MSRP. Berserk should also become a brick fairly soon, and Martian Successor Nadesico (like BGCT) is getting an "Essential Anime" re-release.

Revolutionary Girl Utena and X TV are definitely worth collecting (despite their relatively high disc counts). I can't recommend RahXephon or Evangelion Platinum highly enough. Fruits Basket is an incredible bargain, with all 26 episodes divided across four DVDs. Now might also be a good time to check out Last Exile; the final disc is coming out in December.

Who needs girl clothes? I do. And I'm sure once you get old enough and realize you want them, anime wont be as important to you anymore. I can't even remember the last time I bought an anime DVD. Of course, I still buy manga all the time (It's much cheaper and easier to find time to read), so my suggestions would be the series that you can get both of.

Most recently I read all of the Ceres: Celestial Legend books that have so far been released. It was REALLY good and very interesting. It leaves you hanging quit a bit at the end, but it's a good read. The series is described as a horror series, but I don't know if I'd go that far. My sister has all of the DVDs and she says that they are just as good as the books, so I suggest those. And if you enjoy Fushigi Yugi, then you'll probably like Ceres. Or vice versa. Yu Watase has a certain flair about her that I really like.

And then there's Chobits. Read the manga before you watch the TV series, as the TV series is very watered down and just not as deep. Chobits is probably my favorite series, though. I'm a huge fan of CLAMP.

And the classic I would suggest is Evangelion. And I'm sure someone else already mentioned it, so I suggest picking it up. It messes with your mind.

Well, I hope that was of some help, and I advise you to spend at least some of your money on girl clothes. That is, unless you prefer wearing boys outfits, but to each their own.

QA , I Prefer Boys' clothing but on occasion I wear a 'girl' outfit.

Anyways ,back on topic, I've looked up this stuff and from what I see I like. One of my 'anime' friends, ( We Trade DVD's Manga's and such) Bought GS:SAC . He learned the hard way about the errors.

So the list so far of what I'm going to buy is :
Grave of the FireFlies
Ceres: Celestial Legend
Chobits ( manga then i'll buy the dvd)
Evangelion
Revolutionary Girl Utena
X TV
RahXephon
Fruits Basket

Ive Added something to my list, Trigun! I've wanted it for like ever since I saw it. ( My first episode of Trigun was 'Under Wasteland and Sky'. Amazing I can rememember it but not my home work. Heh heh)

Chobits... hmm. Supposing you really, really want to buy it, I'd recommend getting just the manga. The anime isn't worth the money, and although I found the manga disappointing, it had a much better ending than I expected (I skipped straight from book 5 to book 8, heh). Bear in mind that Chobits is a shounen romance and comes with several staples of the genre.

Mm...an anime collection is nothing without Evangelion. It's a pure classic. Grave of the Fireflies is a must, too.

If I had $250 the first thing I'd get is the Evangelion Platinum Edition Vol. 1 & 2 and probably the RahXephon set. Revoltionary Girl Utena has tons of shoujo-ai and shounen-ai implications, just to tell you if you're not fond of the stuff. If you do like shounen-ai, you should get the Gravitation set. It's probably the best shounen-ai series out there...Yami no Matsuei is good too, but I'd Gravitation anyway.

I'm treading on thin ice here when I say you should get FLCL. It's one of those shows that people either love or hate...but I myself think it's excellent. If you like overall whackiness and total randomnes...[as well as humour] than I guess you'll like FLCL. And if you like FLCL, you might like Excel Saga [I actually don't, but about everyone else adores it and thinks it's hilarious]. The FLCL DVDs are absolutely packed with extra stuff and fun goodies. :D

But be careful, anime DVDs are expensive and even $250 will run out before you can get everything that everyone's mentioned here. Just don't take our word for it...maybe do some research or something.

My dad would say the same thing. "Buy girl clothes instead of anime".
But i never did listen to him.
So in my opinion, i think you should buy manga books. They cost less than the anime dvds. But if you want to buy the dvds too, fine with me. =D
Evangelion dvds would be a good one to buy. I've seen most of the anime series and I'm really into it starting when i first watched it. (And so did my uncle, but he's more obsessed with Evangelion than I am ¬¬..)
And FLCL. Omg...the first time i watched it, i just fell in love with it. THe anime is so hilarious. (Well, to me it is). You should get this one too.
So that's all i can tell ya. :P

I'm a huge fan of FLCL so I'm buying it. I love Excel Saga ( I've rented it from the Video Store here in town).... I'm going to Get Grave of the Fireflies. I heard it's really good. Well... Does any one know of any Baseball themed Anime Movies? I can't remember the one I saw on the previews section on Excel Sag DVD 1-6 Eps. ( I think). I think it's called Princess Nine......

Er.. no I don't know of any baseball themed ones... I'm not a big sports-anime fan... I think its boring.. but thats just me. I doubt my parent's would say anything about me spending that much money on anime, or manga.... but I don't think I'd spend that much on it at one time....

Princess Nine is an anime series...an excellent one I might add. It's all about a girl baseball team and how they cope with sexism and all sorts of things...it'd really a great series. Especially if you're a girl, lol.

A series? Yay! I thought it was just a movie.... I loved the previews for it. I know the whole how to cope with sexism and the other stuff that goes with it. That's another DVD (hopefully) to add to mai list.. Do you guys know of any other Sports anime or manga? ( I know there is one soccer manga called 'Whistle!' coming out soon)

Well, there's also Prince of Tennis [an anime series] which deals with uh...a bunch of guys playing tennis, lol. I haven't seen it but some of my friends really adore it. I've seen picture though and it looks nice. :) I think it's mainly about a giant tennis tournament or something along those lines. Haven't noticed any sports manga, though.

With that amount of cash, go to amazon.com and you can find all that you will need. You could get like 3 box sets... not to mention they have good selection of anime and manga, for ex. I got my trigun box set for 60 bucks, a much better price than in stores and other sites where the price is like 150 - 180.

Happy spending :tasty:

Well, be careful. My friend ordered a Trigun "box set" from Amazon's auction shops and was quite surprised to discover that he'd bought a bootleg.

In any case, this thread is supposed to deal with general recommendations; talking about which stores to buy anime from is a whole different topic and one that's not quite as suited to the purposes of the forum.

I love these topics!! :D

If you are looking for the sport gerne, "Rebound" from Tokyopop is about basketball, but from the little bit of it that I read, its geared more towards 10-11 year-olds. Then there's the "Prince of Tennis" manga, but I never heard of the anime. The manga is really cool. I don't know much about tennis, more or less LIKE the sport, but the action strings together well.

Another reccomendation: "Hellsing". Kinda short, but that show rules. I bought the boxset off eBay for 15 bucks. Great price.

Then there's the manga "Bleach". This one is kinda more generated towards guys, but since I am a guy, I like it alot. It's very action-heavy, but none-the-less, really great.

And you can look in my signature. :D
