Prince of Tennis

I'll be honest and say upfront that this isn't a terribly innovative show. When it comes to long-running shounen action series, Prince of Tennis falls somewhere in the middle of the pack. However, it does have its merits and ends up being oddly addictive.

The main character, Ryoma, is a twelve-year-old tennis prodigy and the son of a man who could have dominated the sport but chose to retire young instead. He's something of an underdog due to his age, but he also has a very refreshing personality. Ryoma is self-assured, remarkably calm and manages to infuriate people simply by ignoring them. While he possesses a great deal of faith in his (admittedly remarkable) abilities, he never shows off except to prove a point.

Prince of Tennis isn't really about tennis, per se; it features a jazzed-up version of the sport complete with "secret techniques" and a number of other shounen-action stereotypes. Fortunately, it doesn't totally insult the viewer's intelligence. Unfortunately, the female characters--which are few and far between--succeed only in being annoying. The background music is adequate but nothing special.

This anime is one of my guilty pleasures--I like the artwork, predictable matches and many of the characters (particularly Ryoma and Tezuka). I can only hope that it's cancelled before it becomes obscenely long. -_-

I've been addicted to PoT for the past...month or so. No, it's not entirely thought provoking BUT it IS entertaining.

I agree that it's getting a bit long, but I don't think that it should be cancelled until the story is done--getting to Nationals.

Right now, the Manga story needs to catch up with the Anime so it may be a while. I don't mind. Filler episode or not, I still LOVE this show *^_^* Chibi episodes are hilarious!

My favorite characters? Heh. I love the entire Seigaku Team!

I've never been a great fan of these shounen sports anime, I didn't get into slam dunk and neither did I like this show initially. I've since found myself reluctantly giving it a second chance after a local club marathon... the show IS addictive, and I find it's oddly unimaginative plot and character to be appealing on a simplistic but enjoyable level.

Series that are extremely long have the potential to drag itself to death (like Inu Yasha) though most sports show tends to have a definite ending that is actually fulifilling and well planned. (There are exception of course, but a case example would be Captain Tsubasa or Touch)

Your comments about sports anime are pretty interesting, Okita. I've always avoided such series, reasoning that while I enjoy playing sports, I have zero interest in attending professional games or watching live-action sports movies. I didn't think anime would be particularly different. Prince of Tennis surprised me because it feels so much like other shounen shows. In certain ways, the matches aren't all that unlike the fights seen in Rurouni Kenshin, Yu Yu Hakusho, One Piece and so forth. PoT naturally settles into the tournament-style set-up to which almost every shounen action anime eventually resorts.

What do you all think of Sakuno? She bothers me because everything about her screams "token love interest." It's a shame, since Ryoma is quite different from your normal scrappy, hot-headed shounen hero (he actually reminds me of Hunter x Hunter's Killua). I just don't find Sakuno's timidity to be particularly cute. I wish she would stand up for herself more often.

It's a sad fact that 90% of female (when applicable) in this sort of show falls into the token female categories, they rarely if ever have anything important to add to the plot other than being a semi transparant moral officer or the occasional damsel in distress.

Personally I'm ambivilant towards her, I don't find her annoying because she doesn't touch any of my personal pet peeve,(such is the case for characters like Relena from Gundam) but neither is she in any way captivating... she's like Keiko in Yu Yu Hakusha, I simply can't picture her as anything other than a background character no matter how much they try to integrate her into the show.

I was going to try and draw a comparison with any character from shows simliar to this that has more of a role than being a 'token love interest' but am drawing a complete blank... can you think of ONE example of unique and outstanding females character fulfilling the same role as her in a sports anime?

According to ANN, PoT will become a live action movie. I guess that means J-Drama.

Live action anime i watch was G-Saviorur and that was god awfull because fans don't tend to like seeing the characters being played by real people. Hopefully Prince of Tennis will do better.

As much as I enjoyed this whole series, they ruined what could have made it such a better series if they just developed the Akutsu Jin (guy that thought tennis was boring and always tried to pick fights with everyone) and Echizen matches a little more. After Echizen beats Akutsu, its like it never really happen and you barely see Akutsu ever again. Plus, he was the only player I thought that looked like a real tennis player. Most, if not all of the other characters didn't even resemble what a usual tennis player looks like. For example, Echizen was about what 4' 2" but can knock players back with the power from his serve???

I agree with everyone else as well. I guess tennis is a huge thing in Japan (although you really only see the female Japanese players in professional tennis tournaments not the guys, so this anime surprised me a lot) and because of that they were able to continue the series for such a long period of time. Otherwise, I think the creaters could have cut the series in half and it would have made it a little more interesting and not so dragged out.

i acutally like the show alot, and i have to admit it is addicting. i originally thought i would hate the manga, but my friend forced me to read it...and the guys are so hot!!!!!!

as for sakuno, i think her a ryoma make a cute couple, but i agree that i don't particularly like her. and it does bug me that most anime girls are like that. that's whye HAWKEYE kicks ***! sorry, had to put that in there. *ahem* where was i? o yah, POT is acutally fairly long (coming from the japanese version, and the manga) there is a time where it seems there are fillers (like naruto) from wat i remember. but u have to admit, the characters are colorful and each have their own way of making u like them. :catgirl: so i like it!

twink out!

I just had to ask, Inuyasha7271, what you meant by "realistic" when you described Prince of Tennis. PoT isn't that realistic when it comes to art, (ie. the main character's eyes are evidence of this) or when it comes to physics (ie. their Shaolin Soccer tennis matches). The same would go for similar exagerated sports Anime like Eyeshield 21, Hikaru no Go, and Captain Tsubasa.

Basically take a realistic activity and amp it up and make it look cool and exciting doesn't interest me I find it quite boring and tedious not that fun to watch.

Its like hey instead of playing football lets watch a bunch of powered up kids play it anime style.

That's agreeable, and I'm the type that don't even watch sports animes. I'm not saying that they're not good or anything. They just don't appeal to me, or rather, I don't want to see a basketball or football in cartoon form. (Nor am I interested in them.) But when I saw the 1st episode of this show, I was more interested in the series.

But that quickly died after watching the 1st episode as well. :) While the episode itself was catchy, and the animations looked pretty good. It's not one I'm willing to stick with. One thing I don't care for about the series (I've seen about 2-4 episodes... so I don't know if it holds true to the end or not) is that it has a tendency to do that freeze frame (There's gotta be another word for that.) type stuff during it's matches that is also seen in Samurai Deeper Kyo.

That's about it.
