What Animes Had the Most Impact in America?

Though, like Solo Tremaine I can only observe things as far as is possible from the UK; I am forced to agree with many others, in saying that overall the most influential animes are the most popular; i.e. Pokemon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, DragonBall Z and so forth.

But, that is what has had the most impact overall, among popular mainstream culture. Perhaps a more interesting question would be 'what animes have had the most impact amongst anime FANS?'

It is more likely to THAT question that answers like Astro Boy, Inu Yasha, Akira, Tenchi, and Ghost in the Shell are more appropriate.

Perhaps the two questions are beggining to meet with certain popular anime films like Princess Mononoke and Spirited Away, that, combined with growing numbers of news articles expressing the popularity of manga (especially amongst the serious 'salarymen' of Tokyo) that are giving it more of a stamp of mainstream culture.

If nothing else, the Pokemon generations will probably stick with anime as they grow older, and thus make anime a mainstream entity in American and other Western cultures. It could be a supreme irony that Pokemon and the like which have been cursed by many older anime fans for humilitating their interest, could be the animes with the impact to ultimately give full recognition to that interest.

An interesting possible vision of the future I think.

Just so you know, I gre up during the "Pokemon generation." I hated the show, and not having cable prevented me from getting much exposure to the good anime. Then I saw Spirited Away and loved it. Metropolis scared my sister to death so my family tried to stay away from anime but I continued staying up late to watch .HACK//sign or Inu-Yasha (I had cable by then). Then I showed my mom Rouroni Kenshin and our family got back into the swing of things with anime.

I would have to say all the Dragon Ball's they are every where and Yu-Gi-Oh I mean thats the first time I have seen anime in the big screen. And now Inuyasha which is growing more and more each day.I hope out of all the anime Inuyasha will reach the top,I wish the same for Wolf Rain even if it is kinda slow going its still a really good anime.I watch the Cowboy Bebop movie on the Action Channel Tuesday night and that one looks like its going on out there with Ghost in a shell which played on the same channel not to long ago.So as I flip from channel to channel I keep see more and more anime coming on.
