As much as I absolutely love you for ranking Futurama way ahead of Family Guy, there should be some explanation going into these lists, or else people are just posting inane lists (sorry if I'm butting into your job, Manic, heh).

Anyway, I always have a tough time with these lists, because I know that I'm always forgetting something and people will always get pissy and yell about how I ranked so and so above whatever else. But eh.

The Simpsons

Batman: The Animated Series

Futurama

Rocko's Modern Life

Freakazoid!

Family Guy

Earthworm Jim

Pinky and the Brain

Animaniacs

The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3
These aren't what I'd call the greatest of all-time, but these are my top-ten favorite cartoons. Honorable mentions go The Super Mario Bros. Super Show, Super Mario World, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (the original series, not the new one), Angry Beavers and Spider-Man (the one that ran on Fox in the 90s).

Most of my choices are comedies, except for Batman, which was a pretty groundbreaking (and incredible looking) action series. A lot of the comedies I like are either satirical, pretty random or both. I love The Simpsons the most, since, at least in the early days, the show was adept at just about any form of comedy, and perfected the well-worn bit of being a smart show, while being stupid at the same time. It's just brilliant. Batman, as mentioned earlier, I love because it looks incredible and really captures the feel of the comics amazingly well. It was never goofy or anything, it was just balls-out Batman, which is always fun.

Futurama and Rocko both rock, and are pretty underrated, I think. Freakazoid! was always a favorite of mine, Family Guy is always solid and Earthworm Jim (as short lived as it was) always had me laughing; it would probably be a bit higher on my list if the series hadn't been so short. Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs were both very funny series, and I have to admit that The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3 was more a nostalgia choice than anything else.

1. South Park
2. Family Guy
3. Aqua Teen Hunger Force
4. Sealab 2021
5. Harvey Birdman Attorney At Law
6. Space Ghost Coast To Coast
7. Home Movies
8. The Brak Show
9. Futurama
10. Celebrity Deathmatch

Mostly Adult Swim shows, what can I say? I also HAD to put South Park 1st since that's like the best show EVER!!! I'm surprised neither of you two put it. Maybe you find it offensive perhaps?...Anyways, I also added Celebrity Deathmatch. I'm not sure if that counts as animation since everythings clay, but that show is still freakin hilarious. And I put Space Ghost because I think that show is WAY underrated, and I'm talking about the Talk Show, not the actual cartoon that's like 40 years old. Well, that's it for me.

OK, here is my list again with explainations:

1. The Simpsons (Possibly the best thing to ever air on TV, and has created lovable and realistic characters at the same time as serving up hilarious satires and gag-fests, despite a few dips in quality over the years)
2. Futurama (Once severely underrated, now iwth a happy home on Adult Swim where it is accepted for the futuristic, hillarious, and original show it was)
3. Pinky and the Brain (Witty, sarcastic, intelligent, clever, silly, utterly awesome)
4. Samurai Jack (With it's stunning animation, amazing direction, and over-the-top action, this is truely a work of art)
5. Animaniacs (Despite a few annoying characters, the Warners, Pinky and the Brain, and Slappy always had some sort of clever pun or wacky gag up their sleeve to make me laugh)
6. Invader ZIM (Completely whacked-out art, sick humor, and GIR. What more could you want?)
7. MEGAS XLR (A great satire on anime, action movies, wrestling, MTV, rock music, Godzilla, cars, video games, and overall teenage pop culture. Plus it has giant robots. Chicks dig giant robots.)
8. Aqua Teen Hungerforce (Terrible animation and a stupid plot, but the insane humor and great character dynamics keep me watching)
9. Family Guy (A gag-a-minute show that is utterly hillarious, but a mixed bag of characters ranging from pure comic classics to dumb Simpsons rip-offs pushes it down a bit)
10. Classic Tex Avery/Chuck Jones/Bob Clampett stuff (Gotta love the good old WB slapstick classics)

I'm gonna explain these in an edit when I have time.
Top non-comedy cartoons (I don't compare The Critic and Batman, because I could only do that with respect to artwork... not fair for funny cartoons)

1. Batman: The Animated Series (incl. The New Batman Adventures)
2. Superman: TAS
3. Batman Beyond
4. X-Men (the old, good cartoon; not Evolution)
5. TNMT
6. Spiderman (the early seasons; not when it went into the 18-part arcs those were nightmarish)

Top comedy cartoons

1. Family Guy
2. The Critic
3. Simpsons
4. Rocko's Modern Life

There's 10 for ya.

I agree with Sciros's idea. I'm going to go between comedic/goofy cartoons and more serious/action ones. Seems like the best bet.

Comedy
The Simpsons
Futurama
Family Guy
Clerks: The Animated Series
Sealab
Fairly Oddparents
Ducktales
Tiny Toon Adventures

The Rest
Batman: The Animated Series
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (New or Old)

The Simpsons is hands down my favorite show ever. However, I've not cared for the last few seasons and have basically boycotted them. I don't watch new episodes at all and resign myself to only reruns. The first nine or so years were amazing, particularly Season 3 and on. Love it

Futurama was given a bum rap, I think. A lot of people saw it a couple of times, called it "Simpsons in space" and gave up. They're really little alike and a lot of the jokes really reward nerdy people in particular. There's a few "eh" episodes, but most are excellent.

Family Guy is just hilarious. It's not as intelligent as the two I put before it, but it works because the jokes are just non-stop. I love the little cutaways the show does.

Clerks would likely be higher than Family Guy if they made more of them. There's only six episodes and you have to buy a DVD set to see them. So funny though, especially once you let it grow on you. The show is so bizarre that I really didn't fall in love with it till I watched them all a second time.

Sealab is kind of like Clerks in that it takes time to warm up to it. I've never gotten into Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but Sealab is great.

Fairly Oddparents is amazing. I didn't love it at first, but the more I watch, the more I like it. Definitely Nick's best current show.

I have a hard time putting Ducktales in comedy because it really was pretty involved. One of my favorite shows as a kid. I still watch it when its on and I love that movie they had.

Batman just rocks... and I grew up with TMNT.

What is the name of that show on Adult Swim with the kid with blue hair? I've seen it so many times, but I can't think of the name. I'd probably put that on here too.

I just put my whole list together just because I'm calling it my favorites, rather than my definitive top ten cartoons list or whatever. I agree with you and Sciros that comedies and action can't be compared together very well, heh. Basically, my list just runs through how much I like them, even though that involves a comparison of some sort, however light it is.

Anyway, I feel bad now for forgetting both Tiny Toon Adventures and Fairly OddParents. Especially Tiny Toons, since I really loved it a lot when I was a kid. It was a pretty smart show that appealed to both kids and adults alike. I really like it a lot when I can watch shows that I loved when I was younger and still enjoy them quite a bit. Fairly OddParents is also very good, and probably the only reason I even bother to watch Nickelodeon at all anymore, since I don't really care for anything else that the channel has to offer (Nicktoons TV, on the other hand...). Just very funny, consistent stuff there.

About dividing comedy and action, where would action-comedy shows go? A good example would be Samurai Jack. An action show that has lots of drama and fights but doesn't take itself too seriously and will break into a joke or even entire comedy sketch episodes. Or MEGAS XLR. Tons of action but a lot of it is satirical of other action cartoons/movies/video games. Where would those go?

I must not watch that many non-anime cartoons, lol. So instead of a top 10, my top 5 will have to do for now. If this was anime, it would be no problem at all, but that's just the kind of anime freak I am, lol. :p

Family Guy

South Park

Sponge Bob Square Pants

Simspons

Fairly Odd Parents
If you can't tell by my selection, I tend to go for the crazier, stupid kind of cartoons that you can usually get a quick, good laugh out of, to an extent, lol.

Family Guy is by far the funniest cartoon I've ever seen, and I absolutely love the kind of humor that they aim for. As soon as I knew that the DVDs were out, I bought them, and deffinitely have not regreted the purchase. :p

South Park is just really cool. It's funny, the impressions are great, and I love how they try to make fun of so many different things. It's also interesting to see the generic elementary school kids put into much more adult situations.

Sponge Bob. Come on, how can you not love the insanity that is Sponge Bob? I was hesitant to start watching it at first since it's associated with a much younger audience, but it really is a great show. XD The only problem about this and other Nick shows is that you watch so many repeats that you just get tired of watching it.

Simpsons is just a classic that shouldn't be left out of the list. I've been watching it my whole life, and always enjoyed watching all of their adventures. There was one point where I would watch the show twice every night for a couple years, and after that, the show seemed to lose it's magic for me. And in the Simpsons vs. Family Guy argument, I'd place Family Guy on top any day as easily being the funniest.

Fairly Odd Parents is another show that I don't watch much because of repeats, but I still very much enjoy the wackiness of it. It's just so.. random. I love it!

This is the personification, or more precisely the animation of badassness. You're right that everything is random and stupid, and somewhat very loud, but yes, it's one of those stupid funny shows. I'm having a tough time describing it, dammit. There was another cartoon like it that featured a bunch of spoofed up Mexican kids as masked wrestlers and all that bull, but I see it as inferior to Farily Odd. It rocks.

Hmmm, as for favourite shows, I don't have favourites because I'll pretty much watch anything that's animated... anything to get away from the seriousness of life.

Ordered in a way to bias those that are less famous, although Sam and Max would be first anyway;

1.) Sam and Max - Freelance police
"My mind is like a swirling miasma of scintilating thoughts and turgid ideas..."
"Me too"
2.) The Brak Show
"But remember...three hams, will certainly kill him..." - Randomicity to the extreme, Brak would never have made it as being evil =)
3.) Aqua Teen Hunger Force
(Number one in the hood G) - One of the many relatively recent shows to the Adult Swim line up - all have great humour and can be watched and fully understood even whilst otherwise intoxicated
4.) Harvey Birdman - Attorney At Law
Took Space Ghost's advice in a change of carrier, it paid off =)
5.) Downtown
I cant justify this one... I just like the atmosphere it creates.
6.) Space ghost coast to coast
7.) Powerpuff Girls
(Producers are fans of The Big Lebowski, gotta love 'em)
8.) Sealab 2021
Great remake of the classic, with some of the greatest humor around.
9.) Earthworm Jim
...Grooviest show around, dragged on in the second series but Hyper Hyper Psycrow made up for it...
10.) Simpsons
Probably deserves to be here, Doh!

I could list so many more great shows, but these deserve to be mentioned more, mainly as many people have not seen them, would be great to own my own tv channel in order to get them to the masses =)

1. Beast Wars Transformers
2. the Simpsons
3. Batman TAS
4. Invader Zim
5. Family Guy
6. Futurama
7. Transformers (original series)
8. GI JOE
9. Aqua teen hunger force
10. Batman Beyond

I had to put the simpsons in second place because the last five years or so have been unwatchably bad. They basically took the funniest show ever and completely ruined it.

Beast Wars is the best Transformers show they ever made, even if the toy and character designs were weaker. All of the TF shows since beast wars/machines ended have been a huge step down (I blame the Japanese).

Batman is fantastic, Bruce Timm is pretty good at superhero shows as he has proven with this show and everythiong that came later.

Invader Zim deserves to rank up there, but I have no idea why it was on Nickelodeon...which killed it.

Family Guy and futurama are pretty even. Futurama has better characters and overall is better except that Family guy just had some of the funniest shows out of any cartoon so maybe edges it out.

The Original TF's and GI JOE were the pinacle of action cartoons with cool characters. The animation for the most part holds up watching it today, and so far there haven't been many new cartoons to match them.

ATHF deserves mention simply because it is insane, and they've improved it a lot since the beginning when it wasn't really very smooth or funny.

Batman Beyond I really liked, in spite of the horrible concept of making a teenage batman from the future. They pulled it off and created some cool characters in the process. The Return of the Joker movie which ended up killing the show was fantastic and evil.

Alright, here's my list of the top 10 non anime cartoons.

1. Harvey Birdman
2. Family Guy
3. Sealab 2021
4. Futurama
5. Tom and Jerry
6. Looney Toons
7. Spongebob
8. Fairly Oddparents
9. Danny Phantom
10. Ren & Stimpy

See all the good cartoons are anime, so some of these I don't even like. It makes me realize that anime is the best and it's really taking over America by storm. Can you see it? I never realized anime was this big in America, especially on Cartoon Network. Man it's amazing.

Ill say of the 2000 AD comics the best ever was Judge dredd.
I started reading thees long before i got into Manga and anime.
I still think that 2000 AD is the best even now they were clever, went against the grain and were politicaly charged (I stil belive Dredd is a vison of the future).
not to mention one of the first comics to include adult themes (i.e
sex drugs and violence) and theyre still going after thirty odd years, respect!

Guest Midnight Rush
10. Ducktales- My staple show from the kid years. Gotta love Scrooge McDuck

9. Talespin- Another show I watched all the time when I was little

8. Ruscue Rangers- Ditto.

7. Darkwing Duck- Haha, same again.

6. Harvey Birdman- Struggling super hero lawyers... LMAO

5. The Simpsons- Has some gloriously funny moments.

4. Bat Man- The animated one from the late 90's, I loved the whole idea of it.

3. ATHF- Frylock! Meatwad! Shake! The random misaventures of random unlikely firends.... beautiful.

2. Sealab 2021- The poor animation quality, bad acting, and excellent scripts add up to tons of fun. Its so damned rediculous that I nearly die laughing every time.

1....

FUTURAMA!!!!!

Not just Simpsons in Space... This is the most clever animated series I've ever seen. Period. I've seen all of the episodes like five times, and yet each moment is just as funny and as memorable as the firt time.

Leela, Fry, Amy, and Bender....

To close, a respectful quote from the King of Thieves:

My top ten list as comprised by me myself and I which contains no anime.
The list will go from favorite to I can live without it.

1.) Daria

I'm surprised that nobody else mentioned this one as a favorite. Daria is quite possibly my favorite animated series ever. I loved her biting commentary all through high school and into college. I was so pissed when MTv took it off the air. I watch it on the N but it's not the same as it was on MTv. They only play a few episodes over and over and the episodes are edited. Also they never play them in order. Still it's better than not watching it at all I guess.

2.) Animaniacs

I absolutely loved this show when it first came out. Then I watched it on Cartoon Network and WB when they were doing re-runs. My favorite episode was the one where Wacko was looking for a potty. He went into a gas station then turned on the light and you see all these bugs scatter. Then Wacko slams the door shut and announces 'I can't go potty in there it's disgusting!' Then he finds a potty in his bag. Oh man, there are so many episodes I can mention that I love. Hmm...I wonder if anyone sells the episodes on DVD. *wanders off to look*

3.) Ah Real Monsters

Interesting concept in my opinion. Monsters who live under ground that attend school and have families and friends. In order to pass their class they have to scare humans. The three main monsters also had a cameo in a Rugrats episode. Okay one question from me, why is it that my three favorite cartoons got cancelled? :bawl:

4.) Rugrats

I've been watching this since I was ten years old and I still like it. It's so interestin that they try and give the babies a bit more personality than usual and the parents never figure out what's really going on. Go figure. The funniest part in that cartoon though is when they mispronounce words.

5.) All Grown Up

Same characters as Rugrats, but in a different setting than above. My biggest complaint right now with this series is that there aren't enough episodes so they keep showing some of teh same ones over and over again. Kind of like The N but at least Nick has a reason.

6.) Loony Toons

I've been watching these since I was very young. Too young to really remember much. I always thought it was funny when Bugs Bunny would dress up as a woman to fool Elmer Fudd. What amazed me as a kid is how well it worked. Then I decided to get up and ask my dad if he'd ever had a rabbit dress up in a costume to fool him. According to him it never happened. Too bad, it would have made a great story.

7.) Strawberry Shortcake

You can do ones ever right? Well that's what I'm doing now with three of the last four on my list. I liked to watch Strawberry shortcake when I was little...really little. I wanted to live in a strawberry shortcake house just like Strawberry Shortcake. It would have been so cool for a four year old I guess. I mean yeah, I'd get cavities and maybe have a slight sugar rush, but that's a chance I was willing to take. Yeah, I know that there's a new Strawberry Shortcake cartoon out now, but it's just not the same as the original..even if it does manage to keep my friend's 18 month old amused.

8.) Jem and the Holograms

What can I say? I haven't seen this show in years, but I still remember it quite well...possibly because of VH1's I love the 80's Strikes back. I think Jem along with She'Ra were my first female super heros. So what else can I say-except that sometimes I think I liked the Misfits better. Hey, I just want to be bad for a while.

9.) She'Ra Princess of Power

This is one 80's thing they should bring back, after all She'ra was an action figure and Cartoon network already had HeMan on for a while. She'Ra was cool, she had a horse that got some armor to look like a unicorn and a nifty sword. All I have to say is: Princess Power!

10.) Samurai Jack

No real reason, I like the theme song and everything. I just I don't know what to add to this. Does anyone know if the show is still on?

10. Daria: I agree with ChibiHorsewoman. This show is just dry humor at its best.

9. Sealab 2021: Has its really great funny moments, but their sporadic, and that sucks because I don't like it when funny moments senak up on me.

8. Mission Hill: There you go, Semanja. This show is freaking funny. I can't get enough of the "douche-bag" comments. They crack me up.

7. Rocko's Modern Life: A cartoon to early for it's time. Damn you to hell, Nickelodeon! You cut down a show right in its prime!

6. Home Movies: One Word: McGuirk. Coach McGuirk is the best. I love Jason, too He had a ferret named Peet-Po-Po.

Anyway, Home Movies is sarcastic humor. I like that.

5. Ren & Stimpy: *read #7* and you know what....REN & STIMPY WERE A COUPLE. REN WAS A MALE DOG. STIMPY IS A FEMALE CAT. DEAL WITH IT PEOPLE.

4. Harvey Birdman: Attorney at Law: HaHaHa! Greatness! HaHaHa! X the Elimanator is soooo fat. My favorite moment is in "Gone Effiecen...!", where they introduce Dvd, a man whose name was David, but he cut out the vowels for effinency.

Another sarcastic show.

3. The Simpsons: The series is on its last legs, now. But the prime was in the 3-6th seasons. That was the Simpson's time to shine.

2: Aqua Teen Hungerforce: What hasn't been said about ATHF?

1: Family Guy: There hasn't been one episode of this masterpiece that I haen't seen, or laughed at more than 3 times. Pure freakin' genius.

I don't like Futurama. The humor is bland. Bender is the only thing worth watching in that borefest.

Hmm interesting... I'll set out these in no particular order as I can't exactly decide my exact favourites.

Samurai Jack: Brilliant show, I only got into this a few months back but I really do enjoy it any time I get to watch it. It's not just the action that attracted me to it it's the whole way the show is done, the movement, the intrigue, I can't really put it any other way.

Batman - The Animated Series: A show I enjoyed from my youth, there were times when that show really hit the kind of dark grittiness that Batman is all about. I thought one of the best characters in the entire series was that of The Riddler, his style in the animated series really made up for the atrocious way they portrayed him in the movies.

Spiderman - The Animated Series: Made around the same time as Batman this was another of the cartoons I really liked during my youth. I recently saw the original Spiderman cartoon and I thought it just really sucked, the characters were just so one-dimensional compared with it's newer counterpart. The animated series at times could be rather bland but it was far better than it's predecessor.

Transformers - G1: THE show of my youth, I spent hours at a time just watching the videos of it I had. Transformers G1 is the best series of the Transformers ever, Armada came and sucked, Energon will come and suck but G1 is forever. There was just so much to like about G1, the whole battle of good and evil between giant transforming robots couldn't help but entrance a young me.

Johnny Bravo: One of Cartoon Networks best cartoons EVER, there was just so much to like about Johnny, from his personal quest to get a steady girlfriend to his personal quest to perfect his hair there was just so much humour to the show. I thought the pilot episode was a bit dodgy but it redeemed itself once it got it's footing.

Futurama: I think this is superior to The Simpsons in every conceivable way, Futurama was fresh and funny compared to the tired nature of The Simpsons. At times yes it lacked imagination but it was usually made up for by either Bender, The Professor or Zoidberg. Any episode with Zapp Branagin was just too funny, his stupidity was the comic Ying to Homer's drab Yang.

Fairly Odd Parents: Yes I admit it I am an almost 18 year old guy who likes to watch Fairly Odd Parents, embarrassing yes but the show is usually so funny that I don't really care what age it's aimed at. I can reduce the main reason I love the show to one word: Cosmo, it's his goofy and unpredictable stupidity that really makes that show worth watching, yes Wanda can have her moments but Cosmo is just so much funnier.

Family Guy: Not as funny as Futurama but there was still a kind of half-baked charm to this show. There were some characters that brought the show down, most notably Meg who did little other than ***** about this, that and the other. The episode with Peter's father was one of the funniest cartoon's I've ever seen.

X-Men - The Animated Series: Similar to Spiderman though it had a much more smooth record in my books in terms of quality. The story was stronger in X-Men their fight seemed justified and you really found yourself thinking about their predicament.

And number ten is...

Star Trek - The Animated Series: This may be a little biased since I'm a massive Star Trek geek, I recently got to watch TOS a second time over and it really changed my opinion on the series as a whole. The Animated series took everything I liked about TOS and gave it a new lease of life before TNG, I salute it and everyone involved.

Actually I thought that Stimpy was a male cat since he had a male voice and everything. Notthat it bothers me. Heck I never understood why they made such a big deal about Burt and Ernie or Tinky Winky either. It's not like kids can really tell homosexual from heterosexual at that age. And so what if the purple one has a triangle on his head and carries a purse. Get over it!
