It's japanse comics. Thats all there is to it. I'm not sure of percise meaning, but when you say manga, your saying japanese comics. And not all manga is anime based. Lots of good anime's, sailor moon to name one started as manga.
:therock:..........don't you mean not all anime is manga based? oh, I don't know, you're confusing me :cross:! a manga series comes before the anime series does. if the manga sells well, then they usually make an anime as an adaptation of it. there are some exceptions, like when they make anime movies. but even then, some of the movies still started out as manga (i.e. Akira). eh, I hope I made some sense.

Well, from a Japanese perspective, "manga" would mean comic. It's formed by two symbols - the first meaning "cartoon" and the other meaning "picture"... so yeah, when they say "manga" in Japan, they're talking about comics. Keep in mind, it isn't limited to just anime-style comics. But that's what we refer to when we say "manga" here in America.

Anime, when used in Japan, means cartoon. It's a borrowed word from the French. When we say "anime" in America, it refers to Japanese cartoons drawn in "anime-style"... though really they'd use anime for non-anime cartoons as well in Japan.

Hentai... hmm this is a bit more complicated. First off, it can be written a few different ways which have different meanings. But when looking at the "pervert" one alone it also has a few other meanings - transformation and abnormality. Oddly enough, the two symbols that make up 'hentai' basically mean 'strange attitude'. But the point is that hentai does not mean pornographic anime. It's more of a name you would call a pervert... in fact pervert is basically the best way to translate it. That's why there's "hentai anime"... pervert anime.

Manga usually comes before the anime, like it leads the way or something. Then they read the manga, realize how great it is, and want to make it into a TV show or movie. That's USUALLY how it goes down. Of course, with Evangelion they did it backwards. They saw the VERY AWESOME show and then decided to follow it up with a manga series, which is quite good, I might add. It's really cute and slightly altered from the TV series.
