ChibiHorsewoman
Library Scolds Senators for Overdue Books Fri Aug 20, 8:43 AM ET Add Oddly Enough - Reuters to My Yahoo! ROME (Reuters) - Italy's Senate library is getting tough on forgetful lawmakers demanding they return books on Adolf Hitler and other subjects that are up to 25 years overdue. In letters and calls to the absent-minded bibliophiles, including a former senate president, the library recently issued a gentle plea for the safe return of books on everything from French philosophy to Italian law. "With a letter or a phone call, we say: Attention. A certain period has passed, so please return them in a good will gesture to the library," a library official said, explaining the campaign to reclaim the literature. Leading Italian daily Corriere della Sera added to the effort, weighing in with a front page story on Thursday, and inside the first section listing some of the overdue books -- and the corresponding unscrupulous lawmakers. One of the titles, Corriere said, included a book on Adolf Hitler's life checked out in 1995. The oldest title was checked out in 1977. But senators, it seems, pay no late fees. I'm really not too sure on what to say about this except that my local library doesn't wait 25 years until they decide to track you down for over due material. Maybe they're a bit more leniant in Italy, I don't know. I sure wish the library would wave my fines like they seem to be doing for these senators. So, does anyone else have any input on this?
DeathKnight
I'm a pretty regular reader of the Yahoo! Oddly Enough section. I recommend people cruise there once and awhile. They have glimpses into human stupidity and otherwise alot of the time that makes you grin. Heh. Just on a more historical note, it's kind amusing that some of them are reading up on Hitler. Oh well. I wonder what the late fee would have been for that one from '77 if they had been forced to pay.
Baron Samedi
...Italy's Senate library...
Would this perhaps mean that the library is there for senators? Do you really think that a library would fail to follow up a book that was a week late, yet alone 25 years? Fat bloody chance. This is probably an exclusive library that holds books only that may affect law/history. Important stuff.
cinnamon
Tee hee hee- Silly people. It's times like these when you can tell that nothing bad has been happening- and that it's safe to read the newspaper for a day or two. As for me, I always get overdue library book statements, but since I'm still a child, I don't have to pay. Great, isn't it? Oh, and by the way... Libraries ROCK LOL Where else would I get manga from? Sol-Blade
Interesting story. Abit strange...but interesting. Maybe it is a difference of cultures. Different standards and practices.
poo62.2
Sol-Blade: I heard that the English are very, very protective of...well...books in general.
I live in England, and we don't protect books. It annoys me when people think of English people being little geeky people that love books and wear glasses, because barely anyone (apart from old English librarians) is like that it England. We are just like regular people.
Sol-Blade
I heard that the English are very, very protective of...well...books in general.
Sorry if you were offended by that...but that's why I put I heard. Gavin
I assume that this is just a thread where we can discuss generally strange but true stories. I have one myself although it's exact details escape me because it's been years since I read the article about the event, however adieu aside here's how it went: A fellow had been going out with a girl for several months, however after those several months he decided that the girl was not the one he wanted to spent the rest of his life with and broke up with her. The girl was devastated and tragically committed suicide shortly afterwards, her brother consumed by thought of revenge against the man who he blamed for his sister's death goes off to kill him. The man was outside his house tending to a large tree in garden when his ex-girlfriend's brother arrives with a gun and threatens to kill him. The brother has a handgun with him and shoots the man with the intent to kill him, the man who'd had his back to the tree felt the bullet from the gun graze the side of his head and imbedded itself in the tree. Using this premise as well as the blood from the graze the man fell to the ground pretending to be dead, the brother with his task complete turned the gun on himself and he too committed suicide. Fifteen to twenty years later the man was out in his garden once again, the same garden where the incident had happened. He wished to cut down the large tree which had saved his life but was unable to cut it down, in the end he decided to use an explosive to do the job instead, why I don't know. When the man exploded the explosive the bullet which was still imbedded in the tree was dislodged from the tree at great speed and struck the main square in the head killing him. The bullet had done it's job even if it took twenty years... To my knowledge that was a true event.
Sara
Library Scolds Senators for Overdue Books Fri Aug 20, 8:43 AM ET Add Oddly Enough - Reuters to My Yahoo!
Personally, I think this is really cool. I would love to be involved with a library like this. It sounds very cool, very old, and very laid-back--none of the harried shelvers running around after books placed in the wrong return boxes. I mean, look at this: "Attention. A certain period has passed, so please return them in a good will gesture to the library." A gesture of good will to return books? I love that. I bet they write really nice letters, too. None of this impersonal, mass-produced, computer-generated You currently owe $7.40 junk that I get from my library. ...I mean, no, I never have library fines. ^^
