chobit
Well, that one painting "Scream" by that Swiss guy(I think his name is Edward Munch) got stolen.Even though it was a little creepy,it was still a really great work of art. This is just another of the gorgeous painting that have been stolen because the museums alarm systems consists of a couple wires that a three year old could break into.Museums need to step up on their security because even painting made by da Vinci have been stolen before. You can check out the painting here: http://www.mystudios.com/treasure/munch/munch-scream.jpg I don't know if this is what you want.But,meh. I really like this painting. I'm not sure why...there's something about it that just pleases me. I did an art project on it this past spring, so perhaps that's part of my attachment. I never really understood why someone would steal a famous work of art. Well...there's definitely the gloating factor, I suppose. And the thrill and romance of stealing something famous. And the general coolness of the painting itself. And the fact that you could have it and just sort of revel in the fact it was yours. ("My precious!") Okay, so I guess I totally understand why someone would want to steal a famous painting. Particularly such a darkly awesome one as The Scream. *laughs* Watch out, folks. You're witnessing the birth of an art thief.
Shy
What fascinates me about this story is that another version of "The Scream" (There are four in total) was stolen just a few years ago; it really makes you wonder if the museums have poor security for a reason. When these paintings are stolen it generates a lot of publicity, and although it may not be recovered, having such fame significantly increases the value of the artwork. Some of the most famous paintings of all time have been auctioned for tens of millions of dollars. Of course, nobody is going to pay that much for "The Scream" when they can just rip it off the wall and walk out the door. There is a major flaw in the logic to all this.... -Shy
Semjaza
It's strange that people are making such a huge deal about all of this. Do people realize how many "priceless" artworks are stolen and how many hundreds are still completely missing? There's nothing new or unique or rare or romantic or anything else about its theft. It happens all the time. This one just happens to be one that the general non-art-museum-going public can recognize.
Sol-Blade
I personally got a kick out of the whole story (The painting being stolen). I can't believe that the crooks got away with it, they spent at least 10 minutes trying to get it off the walls, according to an witness. She said that ultra-thin, clear, super durable filament that was used to hang the painting was built (for lack of a better word) into the wall. They had to repeatedly yank the painting over and over to get it to finally come loose, around 10 mins later. And all the while, people just stood by. Was there not security there? I mean there was ample time to go out and grab someone. They said the police weren't even notified until after the robbers had gotten away. And best of all, they said the guys walked right out of the building, put the painting in their car, and drove off...again...with people just watching, not doing anything. I've heard the museum's owners say that they don't think that they will end up trying to sell it, since that would be way to obvious.

Obviously they can't put it on auction or up for general sale, but people would be foolish to believe that no one would be willing to buy it in this world. They could sell it to some foreign rich guy and no one would be the wiser.
Korey
interesting comment about the scream. sometimes i just want to vizualize myself in that picture. it is a dying shame that something like that would be stolen. :flaming: and thank you to all of your comments, now i hvae one for everyone. Yesterday the new york yankees received the worst frickin' beatings in their history, by who? The indians! wow, that takes losing to a new high! it's like superlosing. Jim Thorre was not the happiest man in the word. oh yeah the score! 22 to nada! the first pitcher only pitched one inning! to think that some of the best players in baseball can take such a beating is really a laugh. i think that the owner has their contracts right now in front of them. is a 22-0 loss worth have A-rod on their team. Sol-Blade
My god I saw that game...and it was definitely hard to watch. Korey
   . Yes that is definitely bad news for yanks fans. well yesterday they did actually win. so i believe that they are already on the path to recovery. Breaking news! kobe bryant's case was dropped! yesterday in eagle county colorado, the district attorney reciveved a phone call from the victim saying that she wont testify in court. Big sigh of relase for lakers fans...well not from me because the lakers have now turned into the Kobe's when shaq left. oh well we can all determine that money was involved anyway.
ChibiHorsewoman
The New York Yankees have been around for a bit over a hundred years now (actually I think it is 100 years this year.) That lovely score of 22-0 is their worst beating in the history of the Yankees baseball club. I guess when you get a score liek that yuou can either do one of two things, jump off the Empire State building (very easy to get to when your team is in New York city) or just realize that things can't get any worse...hopefully. What about that school stand off/ hostage situation in Russia where they've already killed 7 kids. They finally let 31 women and children out today, but they still have hostages in side and people are still hearing shots fired. Anyone have a comment on that?

Anyone have a comment on that?
From what i've heard so far: 15 men armed with fully-automatic assualt weapons stormed a Russian school at approx. 9am this Tues. (we, ie: Americans, learned of this crisis on Wed.). Some apparently have bombs strapped to their chests and are threating to kill over some 200+ students and 30+ adults (teachers and parents) for reasons unknown to me. I heard them say the Russian police think they are Czech rebels. I haven't heard of any demands or anything.
Korey
Man that is messed up! The Us needs to let the russians deal with it though. I feel really bad for those kids. hope it resolves better than it has started. This is the kind of thing that the world needs to pay attention to. forget about osama and saddam, go after the domestic terrorists that are committing crimes on a daily basis. Bush needs to adress this sometime in the debating season. Did anyone of you watch the RNC?
Sol-Blade
Update on the Russian hostage crisis: The crisis was brought to an end (a rather violent one) today. The terroists agreed to allow Russian soldiers to enter the building to (get this...) clean up the bodies of the dead. Well the soldiers entered the building, but their intentions were a little different. They immediately opened fire on the terroists, killing 4 of them and sent 11 on the run. The soldiers took over the building slowly and began to search every room for any terroists in hiding. The hostages were released (which was well over a 1000, contrary to what I had originally thought earlier). The death toll now totaled over 50 hostages, and some terrorists and a few injured Russian soldiers. I don't know the specifics (ie: children killed, adults killed) but I heard that they said it could have been much worse. Note: This info was from news I saw around 9am, it is now 3pm and I have not seen any news updates on this at all  . I don't know if they caught the rest of them or not. Sol-Blade
New developments on the school attack. The actual deathtoll was over 350+, majority students. The Russian Paralement has issued a statement claiming "The US has has practically supported the rebels," apparently because we asked them to negotiate with the Czech, "and that asking us to talk with the Czech terrorists is like asking America to talk with Osama Bin Laden". Well, Russia declared war on terrorism yesterday, go figure.

ChibiHorsewoman
Not exactly nationwide news worthy but the remnants of Frances flooded a few towns in my area. What's kind of funny is that up here it's the second day of school for a few of the districts and so some kids missed their second day of school. On a more national level america found out today that sometime in October Ken Jennings will finally be defeated on Jeopardy! I have some news of my own now. it is sort of tragic in my heart still, but as we all know tomorrow is september eleventh. i would like everyone on this thread to pause for a moment and remember the selfless sacrifices of those firefighters and also the needless deaths of those civilains. (says a quiet prayer). it kinda hit hard at home at first 'cause my uncle is a firefighter in missouri and one of his friends that died in the tragedy, had worked with him just 9 months ago. so please send in your thoughts and memorial tributes for tommorrow.
ChibiHorsewoman
I couldn't believe when I heard this today on CNN, but I thought it was pretty interesting. Apparently Mrs. Laura Bush was making a speech yesturday in New Jersey for her husband. There was a woman there whose son had been killed in Iraq. I guess she started to yell that Bush had killed her son. She was arrested, but all I could think when I heard that this morning was 'Good for her.' One thing that irked me was the speech by Cheney in support of Bush when he said that if you thought the attack on 9/11 was bad, if you don't elect Bush you can expect something worse. When my mama heard that she equated Cheney with a terrorist since he's trying to scare the American people into voting for Bush by saying that if they don't there will be another attack. Oh yeah, another thing that happened this week, the ban on automatic weapons and magazines (the part of the gun that holds the bullets) containing more than 10 bullets expired. If anyone has comments on these topics I'd lvoe to hear them
Sol-Blade
Personally, Im a bit concerned on the subject. I mean honestly, did the ban really cut down on the sales and ownership of automatic weapons? People still find ways around the system. The ban obviously makes it alot harder for people to attain auto-weapons, but if they are willing to go to that length to get their hands on some firepower than that should send up some red flags. This mostly pertains to the assault weapons. The M-14 and AK-47 (Which is sold here apparently) in particular, are the weapons that should be under lockdown. I mean there are hundreds of rifles out there, two aren't going to make a difference. But they seem to be "popular" among the criminal/terrorist syndicates. Anyone remember the LA standoff a couple years back? The one where two men where able to fend-off over 250 LA police officers with two assault rifles...two AK-47's. They went through at least 14000 rounds that day. The caliber of the rifle (7.62mm I think...gun enthusiasts, feel free to correct me! :D ) was more than the officers could handle. That bullet could rip through flesh like nothing in hell could stop it. They shredded the police cars so much that the police could be shot while using the car for cover (Which happened more often that not...). Even the armored SWAT vans were peppered with holes. Considering the avg. clip of an AK-47 is at least 30 (Probably 24 or 32 or something...) rounds, and empties out at least 4 rounds a second...that's pretty intimidating. And they were prepared too, boy were they prepared. They had at least 200 spare clips...each. Talk about packing for an extra-long trip. They also were donning several layers of body armor, everywhere. If you didn't know any better, you would figure these guys were gearing up for the next World War. The standard police pistol (9mm Beretta I think...) could not punch through that armor. The guys literally stood out in the open, taking shots to the chest left and right as they unloaded clip after clip onto the cops. The only way they popped the guys was by driving one to kill himself (Which puzzles a few skeptics to this day...) and by cutting off the other guy's escape route and then just unloading on him. The police practically had to run to a local gun shop and pick up heavier weaponry because the 9mm's weren't cutting it. If that isn't a perfect reason of why automatic-weapons should not fall into civilian hands...what is?
Sword Breaker
Dam, thats just stupid. You americans have alrdy gone supa-crazy with guns to begin with, now there letting you carry bigger ones? Dam, well... hell im glad that im on North America, this way, assuming that the prez goes crazy and makes up a reason to invade Canada they wont be using nukes! Plus they gotta fight out giant robot AKA East Edmontan Mall... and we'll wip beer at them... and if that fials, then well... were pretty much screwed. Oh, and Sol, i belive they got one becouse he was outta AK-47 ammo, pulled out his pistol, and dropped it. When he beant over to get it, a cop shot him in the face a few times.
