How and what anime(s) have influenced your life choices?

I believe that my love of Macross is what influenced me towards finding pilots very attractive. When I was younger I would watch Macross and be captivated by the idea of my "Knight in shining Valkyrie" swooping down to rescue me from danger. Just the way Hikaru would rescue Misa. For many years I wanted to join the military to be more like Misa and hopefully find the pilot of my dreams. Misa, besides getting her pilot was a very strong female character with a sucessful career. I loved seeing a female character that wasn't completely helpless and dependant on a man. I wanted to be that independant and successful in my career. I know, at times Misa did act a bit "weak", but that just made her more realistic. You can be strong, yet vulnerable.

Luckly for me while going to college I met and fell in love with a student in the aviation program and didn't have to join the military to find my pilot!

My friend Ron joined the Air Force because he was influenced by Macross. He loved planes and figured that the closest he would get to a Valkyrie would be to join the Air Force.

Have any of you made decisions in your life because you were influenced by anime? Join the military? Learn a martial art? Or just want to become an animator to make your own anime? How and what anime(s) have influenced your life?

Thanks for taking the time to respond. :)

Heh, any anime involved with guns, weapons, whatever, influences me even to join the army. (Heh, relates to you a bit)

In particular, saying I guess Najica Blitz Tactics did most of the work in that. It is an anime that the agents are females and they are the main characters of the whole series. I still like the male stuff and all, but it seems pretty good that a person of the same sex is a person who uses guns and other weapons a lot. :)
I'm a female, though I would pass on the part of wearing very short skirts. >>

For me, it's .hack//SIGN. I've been obsessed ever since my best friend, Mai_Minase, let me borrow .hack//INFECTION to play. That was a few months ago, and since then I've played the other three games and beaten them.

.hack//SIGN has changed my life because before I found out about it, I never really gave much thought to the idea of MMORPG because I never even knew about them but now I just crave to actually play one like .hack//SIGN.

Because this craving is so strong, it's encouraged me to write more complex and detailed stories enhancing my imaginative and creative mind. .hack//SIGN's confusing story line and plot has helped me realize that I could write something like that. It's made me want to become an Author even more and become a cartoonist as well, because the artwork of these games and the show are so beautifully done and so captivating.

It's also made me a freak about collecting every single .hack photo I can find. I have so many that I filled up four floppy disks.

So, I guess, .hack//SIGN has really changed my life, a lot because it has inspired me to be much more creative and imaginative when writing and drawing.

This is a hard one but ill ave ago. The anime which changed me a bit was Outlaw Star because when i look at melfina her only perpose in life was to act as a key to find the galatic laline but then that got me think about mu perpose in life and the meaning of it. I actuall had quite a spirtual revalation. but really i like to say it made me more of a deep thinker now cause i used to just head staright in to stuff with out thinkin bout it.

I found that Gasaraki influenced me a fair bit. It reinforced my interest in history, especially Japanese history, and politics. It also made me intrigued by Japanese language and culture, to the point that I'm now learning Japanese and planning to go to Japan. As I'd been fairly nationalist before then, this was a big change in me and killed off whatever xenophobia I might have had before really going into this.

To be honest i'm not really sure that anime has had a great influence on me in terms of what I want to do in the future, I mean atleast right now i'd love to go into some sort of buisness and work under some firm that is related to anime or video games in some way but other then that as much as I would say... Pilot a Gundam or a Valkyrie it's just really impossible x__X. Well then again since watching Initial D i've really started to turn into a semi car enthusiast ^_^''.

A few, some for good, some for bad.

First would be vampire hunter D: it was the first I saw all those years back and thanks to it, the anime lover is now part of my personality.

Second would be akira: it was the first one to show me the truely touching stories that can be expressed in this beloved art form.

Third would be dbz: got hooked on it for a long time. It's a great show, but now that I am past dbz, I'm starting to get an understanding of really, really good anime series.

Fourth would be cowboy bebop: it is just the perfect single season anime for me. The somber tone and the awesome action make for my favorite anime... (more or less... it's so hard to decide a favorite. )

Aiya.

You American's really scare the ******* out of me sometimes.

As far as influence from anime, I guess I have been influenced by the advice given by every mangaka: if you want to draw, you have to love drawing, and do nothing but draw.
As some of you may or may not know, I do nothing but draw. It's the only thing I ever really liked doing (as something coming from myself), aside from writing. Similarly, it's the only thing I find myself very good at. Heh.

As much as I would love to make a living off of publishing comic books , I think my best hopes for a career would be writing. I guess manga has influenced me in the fact that I get so involved with the stories I love the best.
If you can make people love your characters, and believe they exist, you really can live off of your hobby. Cool, neh?

So it's not the anime and manga itself, but the talented people who produce it.

Thanks for the great responses. :)

I have quite a few friends who have found renewed interest in their art after watching anime. It is very inspiring to see such beautiful artwork such as Amano's work. I wish all the best to those of you who are working on your art talents.

What about cosplayers? Whenever I go to cons I see people who do unbelievable costumes. Many made entirely from scratch. Now cosplayers are definately highly influenced by anime!

Anyone know someone who has named a child after an anime character? One of my friends has a son named Goku (DBZ) and daughter named Miriya (Robotech). I would have to say naming your kids after anime characters would denote being highly influenced by anime.

I made Kenshin cosplay using nothing but fabric, two needles, one spool of thread and a pair of nail scissors. And every one was all, "OMFG. You're so cool. What are you, a ninja?"

Me: ...

Personally, I think subjecting your children to the taunts that will undoubtidly come with being named "Goku" is sick. Fine, naming them names that exist, and happen to go with anime characters is fine (my dad wanted to name me Suzie--you know, the Calvin and Hobbes character? Calvin and Hobbes kicks ***, BTW). Shinta, Kaoru, things like that. But...otherwise, no. Just...no.

The anime that had the greatest influence on me was Devil Hunter Yohko. I bought the VHS a little over 10 years ago and it made me want to check out other anime as well. Before I realized it, my collection was getting bigger and my wallet always seemed to be empty.

The first anime that i really dug into was the DB series. I started watching it when i was a kid, and it started my love for anime. It inspired me to watch many more animes like Trigun, Rurouni Kenshin, and stuff like that.

Ill sometimes surf the TV channels and find some animes on the korean/japanese channels, they arent that great compared to all the other awesome animes. But anime found its way into me, and i have the urge to know much more about it.

The main anime that influenced me would be Dragonball Z. I used to draw nothing big until i saw that show. It inspired me to draw alot. And it taught me that my anger could be used to my advantage. The effects were awesome, and someday I hope to revive the DB series with a new type of look.
Another would be Yu-Gi-Oh!. It helped me make my deck a strong one and helped me with my game by seeing strategys and stuff in the new episodes. Arika is another. That one freaked me out. I had nightmares about being crushed by a giant blob thingie!
I would have to go with either outlaw star or .hack//sign
Welcome to OtakuBoards, keyblade master. ^_^

Before you post again, please take the time to read our rules. They explain why your reply (quoted above) is considered spam. Although your grammar and spelling are more or less accurate, you need to explain how watching Outlaw Star and/or .hack//SIGN ended up changing your life. Here at OB, one-line replies are rarely considered acceptable. If you can somehow distill the essence of a brilliant insight into the span of a single sentence, I will be highly impressed. Until then, however, I recommend that you consider putting more thought and effort into your posts.

Many thanks.

The first anime i ever had contact with was Aeon FLux. I dont know if i can even get a copy of it. It was on MTV when I was younger. Anime Is one of the few things I can just sit and chill too. Alot of the times I'll just have it going in the background and I'll start to pay attention when the stakes get a little high during the show. For a long time I didnt even have anime around if it werent for programming like adult swim, I wouldnt know about things like cowboy bebop and trigun. Ah good times.

Guest iLoveSetoKaiba
Yugioh was the first anime i liked which was of 5 december 2002. It had changed my life because my entire walls are COVERED with over a thousand pictures of Seto Kaiba, and my room is really small too. As if you could'nt tell, i am completly in lobe with Seto Kaiba.

Sailor Moon has also impacted my life, or shall i say Sailor Jupiter b/c of our uncanny similarities, for example, were both the same height, same hair color lenght and texture, same color eyes, same fav colors, same personality because everyone says im nice but am violent, both of us like to cook, fight, dream about boys (Seto Kaiba!!!), and a million other things like that...oh, and i wear my hair like sailor jupiter everyday

Fushigi Yugi , one of my fav anime/manga ever need i say more?

The animes that have influenced me the most are (surprise surprise) Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, and Gundam Wing.

Why these three in particular?

Trigun: Rem. Her sweet, pacifistic views changed how I saw the world, and her firm belief in "no one has the right to take the life of another' made me think about our country and its death penalty. It is what I say to this day, even when my friends say that if they ever find the guy who murdered our teacher, they'll kill him. Even if he is a murderer, we have no right to take his life.

Bebop: Independence. Freedom. Things I long for, and have the chance to achieve very soon.

Gundam Wing: Quatre. He's so kind and gentle... like I want to be.

Well, some of you may think i'm a cheesy little girl but my two all time favorite animes are still Sailor Moon and Magic Knight Rayearth. Both of these shows have main characters that have inspired me to look at myself in a new way. When I first watched Sailor Moon I thought, "Oh I'm just like Usagi!" b/c I'm friendly and whatever else but then I watched Magic Knight Rayearth & I thought, "Oh I"m just like Hikaru" b/c I'm optimistic and outgoing and such. But then I watched Magic Knight Rayearth 2 and I realized, "Oh I'm justl like Hikaru b/c I hate myself" and got ahold of Sailor Moon Stars and realized, "I'm nothing like Usagi, she's soooo unselfish!"

So, now I think I am like Hikaru & I want to be like Usagi (just not so dumb) and I try to remember those two characters and their personalities to help me be a better person every day. Every time I watch the 2 shows from start to finish (which takes a pretty long time) I get new opinions about it though.

heh...this is going to be fun.

Ok, first- Love Hina. This, my favorite anime, helped me kinda get into anime even more, because I thought "Woah, If i love this one this much, I'll probably find a ton of others i love also!!" So, I go to AWA dressed like Naru, and stock up on Love Hina stuff [my first anime purchase thats over $40]

second, Fruits Basket. If I'd never seen this anime, I would have never found my one true love: Kyo. :love2:

third- Planet Ladder. My first manga ever. Since then i own over $500 in manga.

fourth- Digi Charat. I now say "nya" after like every senctance in real likfe so my english teacher gets all mad at me...heh...

there are a lot of others, but those are like the main ones i can thing of right now. I'll probably think of some more later and I'll post again.

Yeah..... one anime has sort of changed my life as I know it. As Kitty could guess.. that anime is "Yu-Gi-Oh!". "How?" you may ask....well... duh! Joey. I can't really get over how stupid he is...... He's a total dumbass! I really think a guy who finds a little starheaded freak to be his best friend to be amusing (No...make that VERY amusing).
Now....you may think..."Of all cool branches of anime, why would this chick like the stupid kid's show?" Naw... I don't really like "Yu-Gi-Oh!" I like turning this innosent little kiddie thing into an eternal hell for Joey and his little friends. If you've ever seen "Joey Dies" (My little comic thingie), you'ld get where I'm goin'. And no one here has actually seen Joey die, so you probally think I'm insane.......
Heh you guys don't know me anyway..... DON'T MIND THE BLOODTHIRSTY JOEY-KILLIN' MANIAC, SHE'S JUST OBSESED....

WHOO!)and a whole lot more. I could go on forever, and than some.....

Ooo! I love this question!

=_= It can't be my own, can it?

OH WELL! I think that one REAL big life-turner for me was Evangelion. That show...it spoke to me like no other before. I watched in horror as all things good and normal in this world were completely swept away in the wake of the ones who were here to save us. The deaths in this were incredible. They made you think of the insignificance of human life, right down to the end
, when Shinji realises what it means to BE significant. Here is a character who was stepped upon and pushed around until he reached the breaking point. He finally understands that everything was in its place. He finds his place, as I did mine.
.

Long spoiler, eh?

Well, then FLCL springs to mind. Another story of a boy without a place. You never find out if he finds himself, but he realises what it means to be an adult. Then there is the best screenshot of all time! The picture of Naota (Tak-kun) and Haruko's Rickenbacker sillhouetted against the yelllow sky...There is a picture that really said a thousand words...(please...anyone who can find me a decent sized pic of it, do so! Please!)

Really, anime has changed my life. It has shown me that all things end with time. We all find ourselves someday. We will all try to do those things that give us pleasure, but we also will all find that pleasure is not enough. Pleasure merely distracts from what is really important in life. Our home.

^_^ well that's enough of me being weird and delusional...
