When does a newbie stop being a newbie?

Well you've asked two separate questions without realising it or perhaps you have but only meant to ask the one, regardless I think it would make for an interesting debate though it may be moved to the Lounge if the context requires it.

Question #1: When does a New Member become a Member ?

If I remember correctly James told me that it was 50 posts, although if memory serves I remember him saying something about it being set at 20 posts by accident and they were working to fix it. Time used to have it that it took 500 posts to reach the illustrious title of Member but times have changed and we must change with them. So the answer 5O to the best of my knowledge.

Question #2: When does a newbie stop being a newbie ?

Slightly more difficult to answer, I would say that a newbie stops being a newbie when they stop acting like a one although it's anyone?s guess to so when that event occurs as it's unique to each person. There are people who were still newbies with post count in the hundred or even thousands, it all depends on when they stop acting like a newbie and settle into being an Otaku. At least that's my opinion on it...

Well that's the question answered by the man with the facts, jblessing or Justin as I remember him from times old. I suppose that's the thread answered unless people would like to debate when an "newbie" stops being a "newbie".

I think I can agree with that. ~_^

Besides, I don't view newbies as "annoying spammers" or anything. I view them as a breath of fresh air. Newbies are what makes the place run. Some newbies became Moderators pretty quickly after they registered -- so the whole newbie syndrome thing is pretty silly. It's not about being a newbie, it's about being lazy or not. lol

poo62.2...you will be a Member at 50 posts. But your posts are generally treading a line (as with some other recent members here). In other words, they're bordering on being unacceptably low in their quality. So that's something to watch out for, if you have an interest in becoming a more established member of the community.

And yes, I still feel like a newbie at times. I can remember being new very well (and we're all new at some point). So the whole newbie versus oldie thing is very silly in my opinion.

You can actually ask James or Charles if you want to change your username here in Otakuboards. I don't know about myOtaku though. I guess you can delete your account and create another one if you're not too sentimental with your myOtaku posts ^_^

And I don't think posts should be lengthy to say that it has quality. It just have to be sensible ^_~

Why would you change poo62.2?

It's attractive, funny, and has meaning. How else can you tell us that there are 62.2 poos? Huh? How? How can you? You just can't.

Yes even the Great and Powerful James was a newbie at sometime, though not even I've been around long enough to remember that. I look back on my own newbie days rather sheepishly, and if someone brings it up they don't do it a second time [Cries of "If I'm going down I'm taking you with me..."]. The whole Newbie versus Oldie has gone on for years and I'm finally here long enough to see it from both perspectives, it's more fun on the Oldie side...
You never stop being a newbie, because everyone is a newbie at heart.
Unless of course we're dealing with people like you Mike in which case you're still a newbie... just kidding ;). If you're still a newbie at heart it helps keep OB not only fun for you but the people you're around.

Exactly, it's quality not quantity of content that matters here, some of the best posters here have learned to condense their stuff so that's it's easy to read. In the end all that really matters is that some day you'll mature, look back and say you had fun while you were a newbie because that's what it's about.

Well, I think the main thing is just to take note of things like spelling, punctuation and things like that. The substance of what you're saying is okay, generally. It just should be made a little neater and clearer to read. I think if you can do that, you'll have absolutely no problem.

In regard to your name...well, myself or Charles can always change it. And you can always get a new myOtaku with a new name if that's what you want. So yeah, it's all up to you and how far you want to go, really.

yeah, I have never been good at my spelling, it's always been one of my weak points. But if it hepls i will now always double check my spelling, and grammar, just too make it look better.

As for my name, poo62.2 and Myotaku name poo62, i think i will keep them because the name has kind of grown on me now. And if I deleted my otaku site, it would take me forever to get back to how popular i am now (i'm number 97 last time I checked)

Anyway, thanks for the advice James

Well what most people do Poo is simply copy and paste what they've written onto a Microsoft Document and run Spell Check, this takes care all spelling and grammar mistakes as well as some punctuation mistakes.

If you're happy with the name Poo62.2 then stick with it, I does take a bit of getting used to but I think it's pretty cool now. I agree with Wingnut Ninja here it's clever and funny, which goes a long way to help you getting noticed here.

Eh, I don't know about that. The Padded Room Party was pretty dang fun. Sure, it was 2,000+ posts of pure spam, but it was hilarious to participate in. Being an oldie is fun, but it's a different kind of fun than that "innocent newbie spamming" fun. :whoops:

Ah, the grand feat of proofreading. This is something I've always highly recommended, and is exactly what I did for a long, long time (and still often do) when trying to improve the quality of my writing. I would read back through each and every post I wrote to check for errors before posting them, and over time, I would find fewer and fewer errors as I got better.

Also, what I do for spellchecking whenever I'm not sure about how to spell a word is to type it into Dictionary.com. If it's wrong, it will bring up a list of suggestions which almost always has the correct spelling in the list as long as you're somewhat close, and then you can check the word's definition to make sure it's actually the word you're looking for. That, along with the thesaurus function, has helped me expand my vocabulary a substantial amount.

I must admit I don't remember that but it does sound rather amusing in it's antics and if the great Desbreko thought it was fun then more than likely it was. What I meant was that as an Oldie you've got the ability to look back over all you've accomplished while you've been on OB and chat with friends who you shared those accomplishments with. Though in saying that "innocent newbie spamming" fun was pretty good when we were first here ;).

Sounds like another solid solution to writing problems from Desbreko, though I must admit I find it as easy to just use Spell Check myself but to each his own.
