Korey
i have been wondering this question for a long time now and it just hit me with all of the people here with Kill Bill avatars and banners. Quentin Terrentino's hit movie series Kill Bill has its fans raving over the seemingly relentless hack and slash action, but did quentin draw from anime and manga for his inspiration? For example, the gun is the most prevalent form of weapons in movie's today. So why does quentin have uma weilding a katana. Other aspects of anime and manga series can also be seen such as the "obscure" enemies and the physics defying fights. A lot of these elments can be seen in the upcoming "hero" movie in which terrentino takes a page from crouching tiger and adds in some anime esque storylines and other parts. am i wrong here? tell me what you think.
Semjaza
You're speaking as though anime invented all of this, when it just obviously did not. The biggest influence on this film is obviously asian action films and the various exploitation genres. I'd not attribute all of it to anime at all, especially after his history with films of that type (Iron Monkey?). And he did not make Hero. The other thread about Hero says that too, despite all the ads saying "Quentin presents a filmy by Yimou Zhang". He's just helping localize it here. Any similiarites to anime in that sense are inconsequential, as they have nothing to do with him in the slightest. I think people here need to search out films like The Legend or Riki-Oh (note, I'm not saying they're all necessarily good lol... most aren't). Then they'd see that these sorts of films don't begin and end with Kill Bill or Tarantino. They've been alive and well for a good time now. So basically, I think you're just tying too much together. Korey
yeah youre probably right. i just think too much for my own good. thanx for pointing out the stuff that i missed. i just asked an open question and it was free to anyone who agreed or disagreed. i have watched the hero commercials and i didnt see any trace of that director you were talking about. I saw in big blue letters "a QUENTIN TARRANTINO FILM" EDIT: Ohhhhhhhhhh i get it. you mean he's the producer!  :D
James
Kill Bill isn't based on anime. It's based primarily on 70's and early 80's kung fu cinema. It's also based on some of the old samurai films, so it's really a combination of both. I'd say that there's obviously some anime influence there (I mean, it does have an entire anime scene), but the film itself isn't based on anime.
Korey
yes i see the connection now , thank you james for the comments. i was watching it this weekend and i thought about anime series and how it was kind of related to it. I tottally forgot about the old kung fu flicks. i thought that uma weilding some sort of katana was somehow related to japanese anime or samurai flicks. i just tried to make some of the people that have seen this movie look at it in a different perspective. Attimus331
2 things: 1. Tarentino pretty much just took a whole bunch of movie, and art styles and threw them into the movie. I watched a documentary, or something like that about it. i think i saw it on the dvd of kill bill 1. Anime happens to be one of the things that influenced him. 2. Quentin Tarentino did not make Hero, he's simply presenting it, it's actually been around in China for a while already.

Genkai
Saying that Hero has "been around" in China for a while is amazingly understating it. It was EVERYWHERE in China. It was the 2nd highest grossing film in China EVER, right behind Titanic.
Queen Asuka
Yeah, I'm mostly with James and Tony on this one in just about everything they said. Also, if you watch the extras on the DVDs, they basically tell you everything you need to know about the history of Kill Bill. One thing that I found very interesting was the guy that plays Pai Mei, Gordon Lui, actually used to play a guy that FOUGHT Pai Mei in one of those old kung-fu movies. Yes, interesting. Also, my mom figured that Kiddo's katana was because guns weren't really allowed in Japan. And hey, it's a much cooler weapon. Then of course, my dad comes along and says it would be much quicker to just shoot the crap out of them and be done. But that's just not the way she wanted to go about things, was it? Okay, yeah, I'm shutting up now because I am about to start going off on some illogical tangent of an obsessed fangirl.

I really thought that i was gonna get a lot of criticism based on the thread's title. but i really havent experinced a lot of that , and i thank you all for being so polite and making your own statements and arguments.
Delta
It's just a nod to anime, really, not a tribute or anything. Yeah, but it's amazing how Tarantino was able to mix all those genres (including anime!) into one film! :love2:
After*Glow
I don't think its a nod to anime but I read in newtype that there going to make a anime prequel to kill bill.

Sara
films like The Legend
I died laughing while watching that movie. the 'Sara' you are familiar with is a clever reanimation of my psyche, adapted to communicate through computers. Sesshomarufan, please don't play mod. It's not necessary, and it makes you look bad. Trust me. ^_~ I think I need to get some of my friends together and just watch some old cheesy movies some time. It would be a nice break from the world, and it's always good to have a few extra cheesy movies under your belt...especially if they help you catch references in other media.
