mangakiwi
It seems that everywhere I look and every time I draw near 75% of anme and Manga characters are wearing some form of a trenchcoat! I love trenchcoats as much as the next man, but isn't it a bit rediculous? It might just be me, so leave a comment about whether you think trenchcoats are becoming cliché. wiccansamurai
I think there's a guy in Hellsing with a trenchcoat, and Vash is kinda wearing one, but who else? I don't remember that many. I'm not sure if a piece of clothing can be cliche.
Delta
Asato Tsuzuki and Kazutaka Muraki from Yami no Matsuei both wear trenchcoats. (Do lab coats count? Yutaka Watari from the same series wears one.) Aoshi Shinomori wore a trenchcoat-like thing during the Kyoto arc of Rurouni Kenshin. Maria Tachibana of Sakura Taisen did too. Hoom hmm... You know what I think? Trenchcoats make the character look more archetypal. I mean, a lot of characters who do wear them have dark histories. It acts like a modern suit of mail and makes them look more enigmatic so you would follow the series to learn more about the characters. Only old sayings become clichés. Trenchcoats are stylish. Love and Peace! :love2:
Ezekiel
I don't really think they are becoming cliché...they just look cool O_o Let me see, in the Yu Gi Oh manga I believe Yami Bakura wears a trench coat a lot of the time. Now, I'd say it was because he was evil, I mean, you don't see little Ryou Bakura walking around in a trench because he?s supposed to be the innocent one. What eternity said is quite true, characters that wear trenches aren't necessarily evil, but there is something that could have caused them to be. Take Methuselah from Immortal Rain, he wears a trench-type-coat and he's not evil, but his past is filled with bad things and he does have a bounty on his head >_>;; Oh! I just thought of something, a lot of the guys who wear trenches seem to be the characters that travel a lot, am I right or am I missing the mark here? Anyway, a trench is really useful for the travelling type. So yeah, there's my opinion.
ChibiHorsewoman
All I can think to say is that I love a man in a trenchcoat. Especially a black leather one.But that's not really on topic is it? I think a trenchcoat fits for certain characters. Like if you wanted to create a bit of mystery or make someone wonder what they have to hide. Becasue even as we've seen in Trigun, Vash has quite a few injuries that he has to hide. Along with other things. I think that certain plots get played out too often. And soem scenerios and sayings, but not clothing.
