klinanime1
Through many series of unfortunate events, those that were most needed in our anime club either graduated or... yeah, well anyway, most of the anime buffs in our school now refuse to come because the people in it only understand DBZ, Yu-gi-oh,etc. as anime, and it's basically ruining the club. :: tear:: (From what I understand, last year everyone watched DBZ half the time which was why I left) To get the "anime buffs" back in, I've decided to improve on the activities so we aren't just watching an hour of anime for every meeting. Not that it's a bad thing, it's just monotonous. Some ideas I've already had were: Start a doujinshi start a fundraiser (As treasurer, I feel obligated to handle money at some point) Try to get a field trip to ACen (probably not happening) Get Manga for the school Any other ideas? What do other anime clubs do to keep people in?
liubei013
If possible, hold an anime movie/series marathon. That is, if you can afford to do big things like that. And yeah, bringing manga into the school, especially now more and more libraries are stocking up on manga, both old and new. You could also set up viewing of anime of really various genres. Show different and new things that even those DBZ/Yu-Gi-Oh fanatics might begin to enjoy. Hope these suggestions help. If not...well...um, best of luck. Japan
What you could do is have a Cos play Halloween party where everyone dressed up as their favorite anime or video game character. You could hold a contest for the best costume too. Another thing you could do is hold an anime drawing contest as well. As for the anime, just bring random anime in that you know is good and that your school approves of, and show it to the people there. Have it be an anime that they never really heard much about...like Evangelion, X/1999, and many others. You could also go and play video games there. heh
asian_tofu
Not trying to put-out your ideas or anything, just some points that I'm wondering if you've addressed... Well, I think that maybe you should "reform" the DBZ/YuGiOh lovers before you get started on trying to get the anime buffs in. Try making them watch NGE or Inuyasha (which, in my opinion, are both great "gateway" animes) :D . Introduce them to something that would interest them and the anime elitists so both parties can reach some sort of compromise. I'm thinking Akira or Ghost in the Shell (because I haven't seen both before... ;) ). Then maybe watching wouldn't as monotonous. It could be an alternative when there is nothing to do. I've realized that most people are very stubborn. Some insist they can't draw or write so they totally off any doujinshi attempts. Some just have a lack of patience...*sigh* Nevertheless, a doujinshi sounds like a good idea. You'd have to round up the writers to one side and the artists to another. I think that it'd be wise if the artists sort of determined a certain style to draw it in. I would bristle at reading a doujinshi in which that the characters were kids in one scene and then their style changed into a more serious complexity (with NO time passing either - like from one page to the next in the middle of a sentence) that suggested that they were adults. Also, it probably would have to be a short story...right? I'd like to see what the fundraiser would be like :smirk: Any ideas yet? I can see the doujinshi selling for 5 bucks (you'd be surprised how much you can get for a well-drawn story) per chapter. That might work. You could put a preview in the newspaper or on the school website. Flyers, maybe? Japan_86's ideas about the cosplay and contests could be interesting too. But exactly how many members? It wouldn't be much of a contest if only 5 people signed up. A few anime debates, perhaps? Maybe some popular subjects like the Sub/Dub battle or Fangirls/boys. Erm, the club might consist of fan personnel (hyperactive and obsessive are some symptoms), so scratch the fanatic topic. ^^; Get in some J-pop and have them listen to that for something in the background. Or generally some [wink, wink] Asian R&B. Buying manga for the school. Awesome. Now for the near-impossible mission of finding sane anime without unsolicited nudity in some part of the series. [sigh] Or explicit gore...[ahem] Even though I happen to like violence. I think the fairly new Juvenile Orion has only topless bishies. Shoujo titles like Kare Kano will probably get girls into manga. Um...Naruto (I personally don't like it) is...ok. It's better than DBZ anyway. Something funny with a fair amount of violence would bring guys in, I think. I would recommend Rumiko Takahashi, but yeah. I have a copy of anime episodes 1-104 that keep all the nudity out most of the time (except when its important to the plot), but its all in Chinese with no subtitles at all. Sorry. Inuyasha...the movies keep nudity out (Japanese with Chinese subtitles  why?!) most of the time. I think it’s just the manga of Takahashi’s that incorporates nudity. Lastly, what could possibly be the driving motivation of our hormonic adolescent lives right now? ¦D FOOD! Have pizza parties and stock up on soda! This is the best way to milking people into getting them interested into something. It worked terribly well for Model UN at our middle school. And for fundraisers, you could sell food and candy like the cheerleaders do at the middle school here! Yeah, anywho…good luck. This makes me want to be a freshman next year! --BLUE
Darktigerpack17
I think an anime club is an excellent idea. I should try it. A suggestion if your meetings are at a meembers house, subscribe to the Anime Network channel. It has anime all the time so no matter what time the meeting is, anime is available. Drizzt Do'urden
Well I've grown up and gradumadated. The biggest problem I ever saw is how quickly anime evolves. I started out hooked on DBZ my freshmen year, if you want to hook people. You need to start them out with anime with a decent storyline. Some comedy, but something that can also be serious as well as comical, and action packed. The best thing I can think of is start off by posting flyers around the school, as well as high schools, middle schools, elementary schools, and even around town. You'd be amazed at how many younger/older students, as well as members of the community are big anime buffs. Perhaps pull some money together with some close friends and rent out a slightly larger place. It may seem worthless at first, but depending on the community you live in. It may be a lot smaller than you'd think. After you gather your initial group, then you can work on breaking them into different sorts of anime, they may have never heard of. I agree with starting off w/Inuyasha, or maybe Trigun. But no matter what anime you get, its imperative you watch in English, or native tounge I suppose. Most people, well at least everyone we had in our anime club. Enjoyed watching multiple types of Anime as long as it was in english, or at the very least english subtitled. But once you find your initial group, it'll be easier to gather funds whether its by a sort of fundraiser. If need be, you'd be amazed at how a simple letter to the library speaking your cause...or something of the sorts.
klinanime1
Thanks for all the tips. Unfortunate that the guy who was just elected our president only won because he brought people in to vote for him... At least I did become treasurer, though. It would've been kind of sad if I didn't, since I was running unopposed... ^ ^ I wish "Going to Die Alone" (Blade911, that's Evan's new name in the club) became secretary... Anyways. Anyways, I'll look into various art-related competitions, and into other anime (Gods not Inuyasha. Great show, but considering they watched it in tangent with DBZ last year, I think the really testosterone infused guys will throw a fit.) Unfortunately, the anime club is school initiated, so some of the suggestions would be extremely difficult to perform. And I DON'T want some of those people at my house. The cosplay idea was great, and it's surprising how many people were willing to help out with the doujinshi. The person who SHOULD have become president wanted to do music and "learn Japanese" sessions, etc. Thanks again for all the suggestions.
Darkmark
You know my school has an anime club and its getting worse every day. We just had a meeting yesterday(O_o...*sigh*). At the start of the school year we had forty people in the club and that was shocking! *faints* Nobody wants to come to anime club because they think its full of nerds!( that is partly true...3% of nerds come...not being mean but... *Shugs*..its true. *sighs*)Yesterday we had 21 people and half of them said they might not come back.( *curses out loud* ) What we did yesterday is name what show that song came from or theme song...whatever.(thats a tip*winks*)And to let you know I'm not a nerd. I'm a socal outcast. Socal outcast-is a person who is knows almost all and all knows back.(all the names I got to keep up with!O__o)but the reason I'm saying this is because most of the people I know like anime and didn't know there was an anome club or they thing its full of nerds(sorry again*sighs*).If they didn't thing it was full of nerds we would have about around 85 people. So my anime club is lost people(I have no power in anime club so I can't sit down and come up with Ideas. But play the music game(Its bolded) it fun and it gets people to think about anime.Drawing-I say do 15 min. drawing con. with a theme(like draw your fav. anime char. dieing...etc..) and to a theme for the next time you meet. Have them draw something untill you meet again. Thats all I have to say.*dances around the room*
Soliel
Here are some things I did with my anime club last year. First off, we didn't watch anything along the lines of DBZ or anything else that was shown on broadcast TV or daytime basic cable. I figured if someone really wanted to watch these shows they could do so on there own time.
Originally posted byJapan_86 What you could do is have a Cos play Halloween party where everyone dressed up as their favorite anime or video game character. You could hold a contest for the best costume too.
I also wanted to do this with my club last year, but unfortunately, I wasn't able to get the club started in time. We also talked about any anime or gaming related news, such as TV schedual changes and upcoming conventions. Yeah, I tried to get the members to do the art contest thing, but people just didn't want to do it. Well hope I could help anyone who needed it. I know first hand how hard it is to start and maintain an anime club.
