Anime in Britain.

What are we meant to do? I've just been looking over the Anime Convention Thread there, and feeling absolutley gutted that nothing like that happens in Scotland, and so far i've heard the UK.

What do people think of this ? Have there been convos that i've missed all news on, or are there people thinking the same as me. Its the same with the actual anime programs.
You have to be lucky and hope that the Sci-Fi channel will host a good anime.

Until a whilst back all i had was Arc The Lad and Outlaw Star. Arc The Lad i enjoyed, but Outlaw Star am sorry to say i disliked. But onto the main topic.

So is there any plans that anybody knows about for Expo's or Conventions coming to Scotland, England, Ireland or Wales ?

There was a convention with anime in it somewhere in London, but I've no idea about its details. There are the odd trading card festivals, but nothing that apecifically revolves around anime yet. I just don't think there's that big a fanbase for it yet, if only because the UK stll gets a pitiful share of any market available. We don't even get boxed sets- I had to order the RahXephon movie from overseas >.>

So for the moment I'm planning to go to Anime Expo 2005, and that'll have to do me.

As for broadcasted animes, over time we've had a fair few been shown, but at any one time it's usually pretty bleak. Even Outlaw Star (which I really like) has been pushed to a 3:40am slot on Toonami, despite the fact that it's probably the best programme on there). So it doesn't look like there'll be much for a long time yet.

The last time i checked out Outlaw Star it was at the 10PM timing. Or around that, i don't know why we get neglected so much. I was barely lucky to get a shot of my friends Evangelion DVD's which rocked.

Well the only place for me to get Anime is in Edinburgh which has a not-so-bad selection, but Edinburgh costs to get too, even though am going tomorrow night ~.~

Yeh but i agree, we barely get anime over here which involves in me going clinacly (sp??) insane. And especially when everyone talks about how great there Expo's and Conventions were. But i guess we'll get it here at some point, once people realize that America is big enough to get it, and finally decide we need a shot of the Adult Swim.

The lack of anime on British tv is kind of the reason I started reading manga. I mean, I can't afford to be buying dvds and what not and manga is a lot easier to come by over here, that's what I think anyways.

Outlaw Star was good but they just repeated it over and over. They should have started showing something else instead of constant repeats.

I always complain to my mum about this, believe me, she will agree. I think it's pitiful that we get such a poor selection of anime over here.

Sure, if I made a list there may be 15 or something, but when you look at it, all the shows are repeats! Besides, 15 is nothing compared to what America gets.

Let's see, we get anime like Yu-Gi-Oh (currently repeats, I believe), Shaman King (last time I checked it had started again), Outlaw Star (I've seen the same episode about 5 times)...I could go on, but most of it seems to be...'second hand'.

Oh, but we can't forget Dragonball/Z/GT.

Dear Ra, I have watched that series about three times now! Please, in the name of a random Egyptian god, get some new material!

Okay, sorry about that strange outburst there but I'm sure that I'm not the only person noticing this.

Now, onto the topic of Conventions, I'm always looking out for anything advertising one but so far I haven't seen anything, it seems that just because there isn't as big of an anime community over here we get such poor things. If there were a Convention hosted then there would probably be a rise in popularity anyway.

Um...what else can I add? Ah yes, I also have turned to manga because the anime is so poor, I've spent at least £300 on graphic novels and about £150 on Art Books.
Not to mention about £100 on DVDs that I had to import from America and even Korea.

It really adds up to a hell of a lot when you think about it, it's just a shame that we miss out on so much over here.

Ah, something I just remembered. I went to Istanbul (Turkey) on holiday to meet my dad and spend a few days with him, whilst staying in the hotel when it was raining ~_~ I watched about 2 1/2 hours of anime non stop, none of which I had ever seen advertised or even mentioned over here.

Of course, it was all in Russian but I watched it none the less, it just goes to show that we are totally left out in this country. I think we should start a petition. XD;;

Side note: You really, really shouldn't have posted this topic, I tend to get carried away with this kind of stuff >_>

I think one reason why the anime in England is pitiful is because loads of idiots just think anime is just pokemon and digimon and crap like that, so TV companies don?t put on anime shows because the idiots think all anime is crap. I hate those people.

As for toonami, its now being a hideous shadow of its former great self, CNX. i remember CNX used to show great anime shows and sometimes the odd anime movie, but now its become all kiddy, under 10 year old cartoon rubbish that is toonami!!

Yeah, CNX used to show Cowboy Bebop, along with movies like Blue Submarine No 6. That was fantastic. Even Sci-Fi went through a time of showing anime films late on Thursday night, but then they stopped even doing that. I really wanted to see Roujin Z...

Even though we tend to get a poor cut of animes, the ones we do get tend to be uncut (well, the ones not butchered by the dubbing companies, anyway): both Evangelion and Outlaw Star were shown in their entireity (including the infamous Hot Springs Planet Tenrei episode) and nothing was cut out. The only instance I can remember was during an episode of NGE in which Misato's swearing was bleeped out, but that's hardly much, and when it was broadcast outside of SFX it was back in again. At least it's nice to know that whatever anime we do get is shown in the most whole form possible.

The only place I know where I can get all of the available DVDs in the UK is Forbidden Planet in London. Virgin Megastores and HMV have half-decent selections, but they're still pretty poor in comparison. I didn't even know Fruits Basket was available until I went to FP a few months ago. Madness. And bad madness at that.

in london right now with sky, there is quite a lot of anime

shaman king
sonic x
dragonball/z/gt
outlaw star
pokemon
digimon
beyblade
outlaw star
duel masters
yugioh (on several different channels)

there used to be cowboy bepop, sailor moon, card captors, escaflowne, and some others, but they were cut off due to lack of interest (heck, i lvoed them)

and as for lack of anime stuff, theres a comic shop near me in london that sells manga, but theyre soooo old and crap, there was this 'rave masters' thing and it looked terrible :D

there is supposed to be a duel masters tournament in london *_* i may enter, im quite good at the game and own the shobu deck, kokujo deck and many boosters
theres supposed to be a duel

[quoteDVDs in the UK is Forbidden Planet in London
Hmmm, theres a Forbidden planet across the road from me, I'll have to check it out.

In anycase I think the anime which the above poster pointed out inst exactly what we were hoping for, Im not saying that they're bad, but rather kiddy in looks and aimed at younger audiences. I used to watch Outlaw Star at 10:15 on toonami until it got pushed back until the 4ish AM slot, and I dont get up early enough to catch the two episodes if anime, So for the most part I dont get nearly enough anime I'd like to.

They cut alot of the great anime they once showed, like Techi Muyo, Salilor Moon, Blue Submarine, Cowboy Bebop etc but at least were not stuck with just Pokemon and Yu-gi-Oh. btw Did anyone catch Metropolis on Sky Movies a few months back?

Also If your into manga, try Waterstones in Bluewater, they have a few manga's and GNs there, they have Akira!

I have to say if been pretty peeved with anime. Things have gone from bad to worse in the uk. About 4 years ago scifi channal was my source for anime movies. I used to stay up late on saturday nights til the early hours of sunday mornings. They showed all kinds of wicked animes but had a load of bs ones as well but i rember the good times as i watch akira, macross 2: lovers again, bubble gum crisis, Ad police files, megazone 23 and battle angel alita but their are to many to remeber. Good time though. I was then watching DBZ and gundam wing on cartoon network and the scifi started showing Evagelion, Mars Successor Nesendo and Blue Gender. I was loving it but then then everything was switched to thursdays and i couldnt watch it cause of school so i was angry. But fortunatly CNX now toonami came alon with new Dragon ball series, outlaw star and cowboy beep bob. Now they stopped showwing it and scifi channal has completely stop anime any know all i got is reruns of constant outlaw star and dbz and gt  i hope things improve cause all i got is dvds and videos i have buy on the internet. :(

I guess that not much have changed since I lived there in 1998. It is sad really. Back then, Sailor Moon was popular in Germany. I don't know it is still. I feel sorry for all of you guys in the UK. There is always the internet you know.
