Flashback...

Noah coughed vigorously as his torso was pummeled by numerous fists, causing him to collapse into the swarming mud. Deksan was already far passed out in the hands of two Spades. The remaining Spades hoisted Noah to his feet, but Noah dared not lift his head into the beating rain to see the figure of Arkadiy. The crude being wavered toward his adversary and stood still before Noah. Taking a cloth out of his Kalenbore jacket, he wiped almost-crusted blood from his brow, then, using the same cloth, lifted Noah's head so his eyes met Arkadiy's.

"It's a real shame, Noah," Arkadiy spoke with his dark tone, the one like death gripping your spine and choking the mere soul from his body. "I believed in you. You and Deksan. But you disobeyed a leader."

"We disobeyed no leader," Noah managed to mumble. "You're no leader, Kyran." With that, Noah spat into the face of Arkadiy. Arkadiy dabbed his face with the cloth again and stood up straight and let the rain pour down his face.

"Very well, Noah. Believe what you want. You won't be able to believe much more in good time." Arkadiy nodded to Demetric who released the limp arm of Deksan and presented his leader with a sword. Arkadiy swung it around before Noah and examined the blade as if he was a craftsman admiring his work. Then, in a flash, he nimbly chopped the very branch off a tree within seconds. The grin that followed looked devious. The rain quickly washed away bark residue from the blade as Arkadiy turned to the one we wished to slash next.

"Do your worst, Kyran," was all Noah managed to think of to say. It probably wasn't the wisest choice of words, for Arkadiy only laughed.

"Oh, believe me, Isildo, I will. For not even the stars could guide you to my death. Go ahead, Isildo." Arkadiy waved a hand through the air. "Follow the stars." Arkadiy then looked to the skies and made a face full of shock. "But wait--there are no stars tonight!" The shock washed away as the previous grin of evil emerged once more. "Too bad for you." Arkadiy rose the blade above Noah's head as Jocelyn and Liat smirked at their wriggling foe.

"You'll never get away with your plans, Kyran!" Noah shouted forcefully.

"It's sad that you won't be here to witness if I do, Isildo." Arkadiy let out a jokeless chuckle before bringing the blade down. He stopped short when a cry let out among the Spades. From there on... everything went black...

Present...

Noah awoke with a pounding headache and pains throughout his body. The sourness was continous, but his headache seemed to pass lightly once he took a few breaths of the morning air. Dew lightly covered his already dampened clothing. He was comfortably placed on a pile of hay next to his companion Deksan, whom was still unconscious. They happened to be moving, though. Noah sat up and noted they were in a one-horse cart driven by a women. Noah recognized her clothing as those of Akubar.

Taking another quick glimpse to Deks in case he awoke, Noah turned to the woman. She seemed to not have noticed his awakening so he decided to lightly tap her shoulder. But before he even touched a hair on her, she spoke. "So you're awake." Noah leapt back in the cart, stumbling. He would've fallen out if Deksan's leg hadn't appeared to be coming the edge of the cart.

"You knew?"

"Yes," she replied with not an ounce of surprise in your tone, "I've known you've been awake. You sleep quite loudly and when the noise stops, one can only assume."

Noah seemed to blush with embarrassment of his sleeping habits, but with all the blood dried to his face, how could one tell? "What were you doing in those woods?" she continued. "I found you and your friend unconscious."

Noah didn't reply at first. His mind swarmed back to the time he last remembered. It was hard to recall, but after some serious thinking, he got the jift of it.

You'll never get away with your plans, Kyran!

It's sad that you won't be here to witness if I do, Isildo.

Arkadiy, look out!

Noah grimaced at the thought, but upon noticing he hadn't replied, he quickly fibbed. "I don't remember."

The woman nodded as if it were no surprise. "Of course. You were probably knocked unconscious. By the looks of the blood on your forehead, I mean."

Noah put a glove to his forehead and felt the dried blood crust patches around his head, then peered up and hopped to the seat at the front of the cart with the woman. It was the first time he had seen her face. He had to admit, she was stunning. "Who are you?" he blurted out.

"Krystal Evermoore, at your service, Mister... ?"

"Noah. Noah Isildo."

"Well, at least you haven't forgotten your name." She smiled, but Noah's pain disabled him from feeling the need to giggle. He cocked his head to look at Deksan's limp form. "Don't touch him. It's dangerous to try and wake someone knocked unconscious."

Noah admired her knowledge. "You're not just beautiful, you're wise."

Dismissing the compliment, she nodded in agreement. "I've been to a lot of places." The cart rolled on down the dusty roads up a hill until the sun shown through the trees that broke away revealing a vast open landscape. Not too far ahead was a town with rooftops smoking from flaming chimneys.

"Speaking of places, where are we off to?" Noah found himself asking.

"Akubar," Krystal replied sweetly. "It's my home town, if you couldn't tell by my garments. I'll treat you and your friend to a drink there. You look wind-beaten." Noah leaned back in the seat of the cart and nodded.

"Yes, I s'pose it has been rough."

Deksan awakened as the cart passed through Akubar's main gate. "Deks, we're in Akubar," Noah immediately said to him. Deks, especially in these sorts of situations, operated on a strictly "only tell me what's absolutely necessary and tell it to me now" basis. Emitting a tired "mmmmrghhh" in answer to Noah's voice, Deks tried to lift himself up into a sitting position but failed. He fell back onto the straw, grunting as his head landed. Noah wasn't too alarmed, knowing that Deks was probably just too tired to do much other than be lazy about everything at this point.

The sun had hidden itself behind a veil of clouds as the cart neared Akubar, and the town was now shrouded in a dreary fog. People wearing tight black cloth walked by, along with the occasional armored warrior. "A town of mercenaries..." Noah said to himself. Akubar was the place to go should anyone ever need a battle-ready force. If one had the money, he could take the whole town to war with him.

"You two should rest up a bit. Get some clean clothes, eat something. Put some color in your faces." Krystal stopped the cart in front of a two-story tavern. A dirty old sign that read "The Thirsty Outlaw" hung above the double doors leading inside. The windows were boarded up, the walls were completely stained with dirt, and the pungent smell of pickled slog emanated from inside. "It's like they're trying to be uninviting," Noah muttered as he slowly got off the cart. Deks almost fell to the ground as he followed. "I'm gonna go wash myself off," he said with his eyes half-closed as he stumbled into the tavern. Noah and Krystal followed.

A half-hour later the trio found themselves sitting behind a table, discussing business. Noah and Deks had both changed outfits (on Deks's insistence), and were now wearing much darker tones. "So, let me ask you gentlemen, what is it that must happen for two people like yourselves to end up the way you are? You weren't robbed, since you had money to buy your new clothes...." Deks, half-asleep with his head propped up by his right palm, lazily muttered "fighting to the face. With boots. Probably."

"We need to chart a route to the Mountains of Aergora," Noah said, wasting no time. "We need to get there soon, and we need a dependable team with us as well." Krystal wasn't expecting anything remotely close to the request, and returned a blank stare. Noah continued. "We need to intercept another group on their way into the mountains. When they'll be there, I don't know. So we'll need our own team for an indefinite amount of time."

"...I see..." was the best Krystal could manage to begin with. After a short pause, she went on. "Well, getting there's no problem. There's more than enough folk here willing to head out there, for a price. But staying there, that's different."

"Why?" Noah asked.

"You just can't. There's no food or fresh water within miles and miles of the roads that lead there. The weather there is completely unpredictable, and as you get deeper into the mountains becomes hazardous more often than not. A team can get there, but unless you bring an entire caravan of supplies, the best you could do there is a week. And... like I said, that's at best. Two, three days is how much you should really count on."

"But, you can get us a team?"

"You can get yourselves a team," Krystal answered. "If you have the coin, that is. I can tell you who to ask, and I can recommend some good supply dealers. I can maybe even get you a discount. But that's it."

"You're not coming with us?"

"If you pay, I will. I'll go wherever you want for the right price, Noah Isildo," she added with a smirk. It appeared as nothing other than a joke. But Deks was instead alarmed. He instantly rose from his chair, grabbed Noah by his rigth sleeve, and picked him up off his seat as well. "One second," he told Krystal, and dragged Noah to the corner of the tavern's main hall.

"You told her your name??" Deks seemed extremely agitated. "Yes I did," said Noah. "What's wrong?"

"You IDIOT," hissed Deks. "We're not nobody. You know that. We're the Spades. People start hearing Noah Isildo and Deksan Rhames and they're gonna get nervous. Word will get around."

"Word about what?"

"That we're here. That we're not dead. I don't know what Kyran and his goons thought they did with us, but I'm sure they didn't plan on us launching a counteroperation from Akubar any time soon. Why give them the heads-up? It's bad enough that you're talking about 'intercepting a team to Aergora' already."

Noah didn't like being corrected, but more than anything he was relieved that Deks wasn't actually as "out of it" as he had appeared. "Okay, so we need fake names."

"Yes. Come up with something. I'm Kasend Masher."
