The Demons of the DMV

Now I'm not usually one to believe the hprrble stories of government owned facilities until I experiance them firsthand.

The Milwaukee, WI courthouse is an evil place. I had to wait in line with a friend to get a ticket dropped because someone stole his license plate for over three hours. I believe people after that, about the courthouse at least.

Post offices aren't much better. The people are too anal about stamps. Any kind of stamp. Ink. Paper. You name it. They won't mail your package without it.

Two weeks ago I went to the DMV to get a State ID. I thought it would be better to go through an airport with a state ID rather than have to use my school ID. I went in there with a certified copy of my Birth Certificate and a bank statement. They explained to me that i needed a photo ID issued by the state or something akin to that to verify I was who I was. GAH!!! I'm trying to egt a frickin' ID! Why would I have one if I am trying to get one!?

*gumble*

So I finnaly got a straight answer that my Dad could come in and verify I am me, and have dubbed that place one of the final circles of Hell.

Anyway, any of you have bad experiances with the DMV?

You have to realize the DMV deals with the lowest of people on a daily basis and several times a day. The quicker you are the happier they are. I realized that when I got my licence and I waited in line for an hour or so just to hand them 2 papers and have them tell me to sit down and kep waiting. So I did my drivers test perfect and I was in and out of that portion of the test in 20 inutes max if that, so she was rather happy. I think i'll go order a new licence online this time instead of going to the DMV for it lol.

Interesting, most interesting.

Well the situation in Ireland, at least the Republic is slightly different from over in the States, here it's getting the cost of your insurance every year is the pain in the ***. I have to admit that I haven't gone from my driver's license though with the average cost of insurance on an average car in Ireland for an eighteen year old guy being approximately ?4,500 per year I don't think anyone can blame me.

I cousin of mine who's in his mid-twenties how got a drivers licence a few week back and he said it's not all that bad, there aren't any DMVs in Ireland, the whole system is run through County Councils. He said he just needed a few general things like his Birth Certificate, Garda Issued ID, money to pay for the licence and have it accepted by the County Council. After that it's just a case of passing the driving test and you've got your license.

Ah, the wonderful joys of the DMV...

The last time I was at the DMV I took a number and sat down in one of many empty chairs. I look around. There are 3 people sitting infront of computer monitors taking tests and 3 employees behind the counter. I was the only one sitting in the seats waiting to be helped. I look at the "Now Serving" sign and it says 50. I look down at my ticket that says 72!

This brings up many questions. Where are the other people numbers 51 to 71? Why do I have to wait here if there is no one else waiting? After about 1/2 an hour my number came up...they just switched the sign until they hit the right number. I should have jumped up and yelled BINGO!

Needless to say when my license renewal came up for this year I had the option of sending them a check and they would send me a sticker to put on the back of my expired license to extend it another 2 years I did just that. I really hate wasting my entire day at the DMV.

On another government related note I had to go to a Social Security office and that was a bizarre situation. I find the area I needed and there is an armed guard there checking people in. Apparently the Federal building I was going into was the only one in the state to ever have a live bomb found in it! Needless to say I finished up my business as quickly as possible and tried to leave.

I am at the elevator hitting the "down" button so I can get back to the main floor. After a little while the light turns off. I hit the button again and wait some more...you get the idea. Finally the guard comes out and he said to hit the "up" button to go down. I guess the buttons for the elevator for that floor were put in wrong. The guard told me it took him a couple of weeks to figure out what the deal was with that particular floor's elevator buttons.

To quote him: "It's your tax dollars at work."

I just gives you great confidence in the govenment when the buttons in the elevators in the Federal building don't work. :p

Oh my goodness, the DMV nearest to me has everyone within three cities coming to it, so naturally it takes a really long time. To get my driver's liscense, I went in Saturday and waited two hours. They said I had to wait two more weeks, though I was sixteen, had at least 5 hours over the limit, etc. Ok, that's fine. Go in two weeks later: three hour wait, and they decided the person ahead of me was the last driving test. Next day: four hour wait, same result. Day after that: after 3 hours, the very last person to take the test! I wasn't supposed to, but I think the lady who was doing it felt sorry for me, since I'd spent twelve hours in there.
:: shivers:: Never want to go through that again. I hope never to get my driver's liscense revoked or anything.
