Protecting files from parents...is this ok?

Recently I've discovered how to put passwords on some of my documents. I'm going to lock my journal and fanfiction. I don't want my parents to see my fanfiction because apparently they think the only cuss words I know are "damn" and "hell." Also, I have a lot of violence in my stories and like reading and writing romance.

For parents who think kissing on TV is R-rated material, is this ok?

Er, well, I don't know how many parents you'll find on OB that have worthwhile input on this.

I have a few documents password-protected on my computer, namely a few IM records, an old journal from high school, stuff like that. I password-protect them simply because they're very, very personal, and just things I don't want anyone to read without my presence.

Obviously, I don't really see anything wrong with password-protecting documents, and I think that as long as you realize and understand the line between reality and fantasy, fact and fiction, I don't see a problem with restricting access to those.

Hey, i say go for it buddy! It's okay if you don't want your parents to read something. I, too, put passwords on some of my things and rarely ever let my parents use my computer.I have many cuss words in my stories and a lot of voilence, and never let my parents read them. My mother watched trigun and is thinking of banning me from watching anime! Anyway, put passwords on all your damn stuff and don't tell your password to anyone!

As much as I dislike my parents right now, I would say no... I do allow them to read storys of my own and they think that its not a sign of madness or anything like that (although they think CS is...), they see it as a way for me to relieve stress and express my feelings. Ive actually asked my parents to read some of my stuff and they think that someday I could have it published...

But if your parents think that it is madness, then instead of hiding it, show them that its your way of expressing imagination and feelings. But if you dont want to do that, lock them up all you want I say... But be aware of this, if the manage to crack the password, you may be in a tight spot...

[EDIT]: But for future reference, how do you password protect... lol???

Well, I'm a parent, but my daughter is illiterate-aren't all children under 1 year?

I don't see any problem with protecting your personal property as long as you're not doing anything illegal. And Sicne doing fanfiction and your personal journal isn't illegal there isn't a problem.

Heck I share a computer right now with my mom and everyone else in the house and everyone's desktop is password sensitive. So obviously some parents think this is a good idea.

Well, there's my $.02. Worth more in Canada and Iraq

My parents are Asian, and very traditional. Dad still has a grudge at Japan over WWII, and dislikes the fact that I'm even into anime. Despite the many times I tell him how to say "anime," he insists on calling it "animal." That pretty insulting in my book.

P.S. You go to Save as, tools, general options, and the bottom should have a password thingy...

Ahh I see... well in that case, if they cant except you for who you are then I suppose that is the only thing you can do...

Also, you mentioned that your dad had a grudge, same with your mom? If your mom doesnt, try to explain yourself to her and maybe she can help the situation...

P.S. Thanks for the Password thingy...

Having a password on something is incredibly suspicious. If I found a file on my computer that was password protected I'd want to find out what it is.

Hide it in the windows folder labled "secsys.txt" or something intimidating like that. Assuming he knows nothing about computers.

My mom's a bit better, but she doesn't like the fact that anime is influencing my life, i.e. Internet time. I remember my mom telling me to stop manga because it was Japanese...and well, you can imagine to rant.

I keep the locked files in my folder in which they barely look at, but now my dad is going through. I decided to lock at least my journal and fanfiction.

Yeah dude. Haha, I'd say that's fine.
Your parents do sometimes know what is best for you, but often times, they don't.
Restricting what you write because of stupid little things like curse words and things like that is just silly.

What they don't know is probably better for them (and for you). :P

As much as I'd like to stay all morral and clean here and say that you really shouldn't hide stuff from your parents, I don't really have the right to since I have, and still do at times, do the same thing. I'm an adult and there are some things that my parents still don't know about me (and if I have it my way, they'll probibly never will).

In a lot of ways, having password protected files stored on your computer is like having a locked diary or journal. There are some things that people want to keep privet from other people, even the ones closest to them.

So as long as your not planning anything illegal, I say it's fine.

Its easier to get foregiveness than permission. Find an obscure folder, lock thie files, and then put them in hide mode. No mum or dad is gonna find them. I am curious as to why you'd ask this question. You have already, in a mild sense, rebelled in going beyond your parents desired thought boundaries for you.

That's a good thing, its called expanding your horizons and growing up. But at the same time, since you have already crossed a line, why ask about protecting it? Do you still cling to something? Interesting....

Well... I locked my journals and other stuffs on my computer and only work on them when no one is around. So I would hide my stuff and lock it. Too bad I don't know how to lock folders though... If I can, I'm going to lock my whole private folder. I'm just hiding them for now.

Well, I back when I was living with my parents I used to password my stuff all the time. But you know what? Before I did, I even told them. I told them what I was passwording (Not in detail, but nothing dirty mind you...stuff like my artwork, documents and music files) and why I felt it was...in layman's terms...none of their business. They were actually kinda surprised by me telling them first, that they said they didn't mind/care. Now whether or not that would work with your parents, I wouldn't know. My parents were the cool, open-minded type. I mean come on, my dad watches anime and plays Unreal Tournament with me.

I love my parents. :D

Anyways, final note being as long as you aren't hiding anything you shouldn't be...you should be allowed to do it.

Geez. Talk about conspiracy-corner. Some of you people are...but I won't get into that, lol.

If there are private things you'd rather not have your parents read, then there is no problem in locking it. You're not hurting anyone. I mean, it's practically keeping it all in your head, isn't it? But a written record of all that. I'd do it. There isn't really anything wrong with it.

And I am not really sure why you'd think there could be.

If you're using XP, you can just set your account to administrator and password it... Then noone can snoop around without being logged in as you. That's always worked for me.

But if you can't do that, and you really feel the need to Password Protect it, I'd reccomend telling them first, or, worst case scenario, they could assume it's a malignant file when prompted for a password and delete it.

Or they could demand to know why you locked it in the first plac and force you to show them. So yeah, I think at least telling them why it's locked is a good idea if you're going to password protect it. Maybe make a small white lie about the fanfics though...

'Sure Mum, just more journal files, eheheh...'

Note: Harry's advice was utter genius.

All my files are only accesible from going on my account on the computer.Which is password protected.^.^
As my parents are all God-like and whatnot, our morals different slightly,i.e they have them and I don't.So I don't like them seeing ANYTHING.

Yes Power to the people who just lock their whole computers completely! *_* I have my whole computer locked so you can turn it on but... that's pretty much all you can do with it... and if its a computer you all use like a family computer I think it's absolutely fair yu get to keep some privacy for yourself... ^_^
