Emotional Attachment

It's unusual but recently I've discovered that I become more emotionally attached to characters in books I read rather than people I know in real life. Recently I finished raeding a series of books and at the end when one of the main characters died I was practically in tears.

Now what I find unusual Is the fact that I have almost no emotional attachment to those around me in real life. Does anyone else have the same thing happen to them?

well i'm similar to you..i'm a sort of diffident towards other people in real life because they can betray you at every moment..(yes..i've a short number of person in which i trust..) while the character of a book of or a film is like you read it..he can never betray you (but unfortunately the author can change him in a sequel)..
however this character can be also the personification of our dreams..this is why we are emotional towards them in my humble opionion

I know how it feels to be attached to characters in books in movies. However,I am also emotionally retarded.I have cried at every (excluding pure comedy) movie I have ever seen.Ask me about any movie,I was probably bawling my eyes out into my friends sholder. Its very embarrasing.
But I am equally,if not more, attached to people in real life.

Yesterday,my friend went to the mall, and her msn said,"At the Mall, call me if you are Ethan,Jess or Amanda".It usually has my name there too,but we had a small fight.I got so overly worked up,began to cry and called her on her cell phone.I began to cry...because she forgot my name. Its very sad.

Ok,sorry I had to bore you all with my story,I'm going to get some food now.

I think most people feel attached to people in books and in movies is because you personally know what they are feeling so you can relate to them, and from there side of the story. However, in real life, you can never guess anyone's true intentions or emotions. Its pretty simple. In movies, you always see the main character's view, but how do others know what shes feeling? Exactly. they dont.

I'm the same way. If I saw a person get their brains blown out I probably wouldn't do anything(maybe laugh a little depending on who it is), but if you kill off a character I like in a book/t.v. show I get worked up over it. It seems to be a common theme these days to be somewhate devoid of emotion in the real world, but be very emotional towards certain non-reality things.

probably is exactly like you said..you almost now everything of the character and how are his/her emotions..while people in real life has always something mysterious in their thought..even if sometimes this mystery make the people different and not always the same thing..
my different emotions towards book probably comes from the idea that everyone can change his/her idea of you..finding a person who is the same for all his/her life is something difficult

You all have very good points but what was strange about the character that was killed off was that it was set up in a way so not to be a surprise but it was. She was a fatalist and every time she went into battle she expected to die. In a way that made you expect her to die but the fact that she always lived made one suspect that it was never going to happen. It was also only in the last two books of the series that she was set up to be a good person.

Ah, yes, it has happened to me before. I know of what you speak. I once became emotionally attached to Mononoke when I was watching Princess Mononoke. She is so attachable, lol. I guess I just felt for her in those moments when she was in danger or looked frightened or whatever. I have gotten over this attachment however, lol. It seems I am obsessive of people I don't know many times. :smirk:
