Luminaire
I'm back! Anyway, I was looking through a magazine today and I ran across a strange article. It was about witchcraft in Congo. I'm not talk about wicca, I'm talking about the "I use the power of Satan to destroy good"craft. O_o Apparently, belief in witchcraft has stayed alive in Congo. After losing 7.3 million people in a 5-year civil war, 3.4 million infected with AIDS, and most ravaged by malnutrition, Congo found that they turned their blames to witchcraft. 83% of the population of Congo believe in witchcraft, of those, 73% believe that children could be witches. That is what the story was really about. Young orphans have been accused for witchcraft. Children of poor families have been accused of witchcraft. These children, when accused, are sent to churches, where parishes perform exorcisms on them. The exorcism is severe mental, physical and even sexual abuse. Possesions of the child's family are normally given to the church where they are "blessed and used against Lucifer". It was actually a rather sickening article. It described some of the torture, what children were accused of, and what conditions in the churches were like. I was rather disgusted if I must say so. I'll find the article online if anyone is really interested. The strangest part of the article said that this had been occuring for 5 years. How come it wasn't mentioned sooner? What's your opinion on this occurence? Has anyone else heard about this? What do you think should be done? ~Lumi ^_^
SlimSL
Yo That is fairly disturbing, makes you realize how backwards parts of the world are. Shows how scary superstition and unchecked religion can be. I havent't heard about this happening anywhere and I keep fairly up to date on international news. I'm not sure what can be done about it, govenrmental (Congo's Government not ours, we got enough on our plate already.) intervention seems like the only solution but I'm fairly certain that Congo's government doesn't havem much power or funds and it is most likely curropt. A difficult situtation from all angles. Oh, it's odd that this should be brought up because my English class has been focusing on the Witch Hunts for the last few weeks, Ironic Eh? Godelsensei
What can I say? Certain religious groups seem to be a couple hundred years behind, as far as social maturity goes. The first thing that comes to mind, naturally, is the witch hunts, which constituted basically the same thing. Every one knows that the victims of those "trials" just had something material the people who ratted them out wanted, most of the time. Then, it just got crazy, and they started burning people for having green eyes and freckles. Depressing, really. Where's the article, SVP?
gothicanimechic
that is pretty sad. boo hoo :( . but seriously, those people mustn't have much to do if they're teaching their children to be witches. it's confuddling. aren't we glad we don't live there? please excuse my confuddling talk. i'm still asleep. but it IS sad.
