OtakuBoards: Enter the Game [Could it work?]

[COLOR=TEAL][SIZE=1]Hi all, I've just been looking through my old Microsoft word files and I came across an RPG I was designing a while back so it was before the Underground came along.

It's based on Solo's 'Enter the Net' fanfiction and I've got ideas and such for it but I'm not really sure if it would do down well so I'll show you what I've got so far and get your opinion on the RPG and what I could do with it.

[COLOR=TEAL][SIZE=1][I]??You were prepared for us to be sucked into the Boards by a freak accident, start a virtual community and deal with an army of spam-throwing hackers?"[/I] ? Desbreko, Enter the Net

-=============-

About a year ago a freak accident involving some tea, lighting and a clumsy Australian resulted in the un-imaginable happening. An entire community of people were transported into the Internet and started a virtual island which was modelled after the place they had all come from, a place called OtakuBoards.

In the beginning all was calm and peaceful; the RPGs went on [Albeit with some difficulty] the discussion were of a relatively high-standard for all, Play It was always full of loud bangs and triumphant yelps or disappointed squeals and of course the Yu-Yu-Hakusho forum was just there and nothing much could be done about it.

And for a time things were good, the moderators were much more daunting in the ?flesh? so people mostly kept to the rules and everyone got on well that was until IT happened.

A rogue hacker program known as H4XX0r came to the boards with an army of Spam-Throwers known as The l33t with the idea of conquering the boards but James, Adam, Charles and the rest of the team weren?t going down without a fight. With the super spiffy Mod-Suits and the equally spiffy Mod-Zords they were able to eradicate H4XX0r and the majority of his spam throwers.

The conflict had destroyed most of the Island as well as the OtakuBuilding itself so the task of re-building the Island into version.7 was begun and that?s pretty much where we are now, though the Island is a lot different.

Instead of having all the forums and sub-forums squashed into one building it was decided to expand across the Island and each Forum and Sub-Forum would have its own little piece of OB-Island to call home.

So everyone is happy and no one really has a care in the world but the gentle members of OB do not realise that the remains of H4XX0r are re-building themselves into H4XX0r v.2 with a mission of vengeance on his mind.

-=============-

[U]OtakuBoard Island version.2[/U] [OtakuBoards version.7][/CENTER]

At the centre of the island is the [B]Index Building[/B] where OtakuBot can coordinate all the Private Messages, Instant Messengers, Member Logins and all the other things that come his way. Index is like a large Doctors Waiting Room where prospective members come to wait while their membership is processed by OtakuBot. There is a rota for the ?Welcoming Committee? of current members who must meet & greet the new members as they arrive [Think jury duty but worse]. Index is connected to all the other buildings across the island with transport chutes [Futurama style] that send members rocketing all over the island. Out of all the buildings it resembles OtakuBoards the most with the prominent grey and blue colour scheme designed to look as welcoming as possible to all new members.

[B]Tokyo 3[/B] is just a short chute ride from Index. Its location is much like that of its name-sake and so is its appearance. A large Silver glare on the lush green landscape of OB Island, but the main residents of Tokyo 3 don?t get out much so they don?t see the problem with their homes appearance. A recent addition to Tokyo 3 is the Mecha Battle Field where those with Gundam, Evangelion and other Mecha avatars can resize them and have a pitched battle while other watch in awe and amazement placing bets on the outcome.[/COLOR][/SIZE]

[color=gray][size=1]This sounds like uber cool :P I would certainly join if you'd post it. Although there is sort of a lack of storyline for everyone to begin the RPG with.
There's way enough history but people might have a bit to much freedom at this moment seeing as well... It's kind of hard playing like you're in a BoardsWorld, I think... Never tried it out I must say o.o;;[/color][/size]

[SIZE=1]Interesting, most interesting.

I think this is sheer genius Bill and I absolutely mean that, the sheer potential of this RPG boggles the mind if the right people get involved in it. Personally I disagree with Boo's point, the lack of a set storyline gives the chance for people to really get creative with the events as they unfold. Yes some people may have trouble without any guidelines to structure their writing but I could see this unfolding to be one of the best RPGs in Otakuboards' history.[/SIZE]

[COLOR=TEAL][SIZE=1]Okay, done a few more descriptions of the areas of the Island. I'm still wanting opinions of these and the RPG idea in general ^_^;;

[CENTER]===============[/CENTER]

[B]Tokyo 3[/B] is just a short chute ride from Index, located south-east of Index in a large valley. Its location is much like that of its name-sake and so is its appearance. A large Silver glare on the lush green landscape of OB Island, but the main residents of Tokyo 3 don?t get out much so they don?t see the problem with their homes appearance. A recent addition to Tokyo 3 is the Mecha Battle Field where those with Gundam, Evangelion and other Mecha Avatars can resize them and have a pitched battle while others watch in awe and amazement placing bets on the outcome.
[LIST]
[*]The [B]Anime Lounge[/B] is pretty much what it sounds, only bigger. There is a whole district of Tokyo 3 devoted to the watching and discussion of Anime, from Neon Genesis Evangelion to Beyblade. The watching areas are dominated by huge flat widescreen televisions which can fit a capacity of 950 Otaku at one time but even so conflicts do some times occur between die-hard fans of certain Anime so the Mods need to use their super spiffy Mod-Rods to break, or rather blast, the combatants apart. The discussion area is dominated by hundreds of super-soft chairs which members can park their arse in and put their feet up and enjoy the finer points of Anime such as who has the best hair and which Mech would rule supreme, hot chocolate and biscuits are all supplied and can be acquired through the member interface.
[*][B]Manga Workshop[/B] is the place to be for the most diehard of Manga fans. Many went mad with desire when they first began drawing there characters because no sooner had they done this then the drawings were brought to life and began talking to their creators. Lady Katana herself had to create a new set of guidelines before the problem was sorted. The workshop also takes a whole district of Tokyo 3 but it is much more noticeable thanks to the mounds of balled up paper and paint blobs all over the buildings. There are several sub-forums with have been created to deal with the different art styles which people prefer as well as various break-rooms to people can get away from the pencils and mad-colour schemes before they go slightly mental.
[*]The [B]Anime Archives[/B] were kept as a reminder of days gone past. A time when Yu-Yu-Hakusho had its own forum, when newbies ran rampage all over the Digimon and Pokèmon message boards. Also the Anime Boards were the area most hit by the invasion of H4XX0r so there is an area devoted to the battle of the Mods with authentic replica model detailing the events leading up and during the war. Only a few members a month go into these old and squeaky halls, many are curious newbies wanting to what OtakuBoards was like before Version 7 and looking in wonderment at the threads that were allowed to survive into the archive stage where today similar ones would be eradicated before they reached four replies. Dust tends to accumulate but OtakuBot is usually on top of it. James and Adam have left strict orders that these halls should be kept as they were to serve as a reminded to member new and old never to let the likes of H4XX0r and the n00bs get in to the boards again.
[*]We come to the end of our tour of Tokyo 3 with out final stop, [B]Team Miyazaki Headquarters[/B]. Like all of the Team HQs team Miyazaki?s HQ towers of Tokyo 3 in the form of the Space Needle from Seattle. Some times members are allowed a VIP tour of the building but not very often seeing as it means the Mods have to get round to cleaning the HQ out. When you first enter the M-HQ the first thing you see is a large mural dedicated to all the Anime and Manga greats then you have a choice of either going via the walk of fame or taking the elevator up to the top. The walk of fame has the greatest Anime and Manga characters of all time in statue from standing in there signature stance. The main part of the tower where the Mods live and work is usually a mess. Empty ramen cups, food boxes and DVD cases are strew across the room in an attempt to be tidy. Each Mod has his or her own room in their towers but no one knows what they?re like on the inside. In the centre of each tower is a transmission and transport system so the Mods can stay in touch with each other using the towers ?Space Needle?.
[/LIST]
[B]Hardwired[/B] is the gaming capital of the island located to the north of Index where it doesn?t get so warm allowing the gamers to stay in-doors for longer periods of time without needing to get re-hydrated and miss a vital point in the game they?re playing or missing one of Shinmaru?s gaming seminars. In appearance Hardwired is a mish-mash of several gaming environments rolled into one, from the lush green of Hyrule to the desolate and urban Mech-Warrior. The city areas are similar but take cues from the less action based games so the members have places to go and relax while they aren?t playing there games.
[LIST]
[*][B]Play It[/B] takes up the majority of the Hardwired environment and is mostly urban due to the nature of the game playing and gaming discussions or seminars. The core looks very similar to the landscape of Coruscant from the Star Wars movies and games. Every so often you might see a TIE-Fighter or Fight Jet screaming over the city while games indulge in their fantasies. Quite a large portion of the urban paradise is given over to the gaming centres and renting hubs. The reason the renting system was created was because James and Adam couldn?t get enough bandwidth for an unlimited supply of games so the gamers had to make a sacrifice and receive a limited supply of games for their use. Many members make their home in the coruscant area but many feel more at home in the discussion locations. If you were to take a tube to the discussion threads of Play It you would find specialised areas for certain games, for example the Zelda games thread is a full scale Hyrule Castle with can also be customised into Ganon?s Castle for events like Halloween and the Mario discussion area is the Mushroom kingdom and it goes on like this. Out of all the areas Play It normal has the highest concentration of members at one time which presents many congestion issues for members trying to get out or use the tube to reach another forum.
[*]Beneath the thriving metropolis of Hardwired lies a highly secret place, [B]PC/Mac[/B]. This is the place to be for all PC Gamers, tech-heads and web site designers. In the lower levels of the coruscant city of Play It are numerous passages into the secret world of the PC Gamers and only those with the password can get in. After a long trek through the tunnel system bathed in the neon-green glow you immerge in a pure white and grey underground hive with wall to wall computer systems, CDs, program boxes and many other things. PC/Mac is by far the most meticulously kept forum in the entire island with no dust as far as the eye can see. The underground forum is roughly 20 meters high and stretches as far as Hardwired but many believe that it spreads much further and is hidden beneath the entire island. The ground floor is for the game-heads who are always playing the multiplayer versions of their favourite games, from Command & Conquer to The Sims 2 and these lucky people are all Beta testers for the numerous game companies of the world. The second level is for the designers, all kinds of designing take place here from games to websites, only the lucky few ever get to release their creations to the member market of OB. On the highest level is the discussion area where the members meet to discuss the latest developments in the computer world. Many members spend their entire membership never entering the PC/Mac area and some refuse to accept its existence.
[*]Like all the Mod HQs the [B]Team Yokoi Headquarters[/B] looks identical to the Space Needle in Seattle. Due to Hardwired being a highly urban setting the HQ cannot tower over the area so instead an area in the center of the city 25 meters by 25 meters was cleared and the tower was placed in the middle and had a transport chute connected to it so people could get there easily. [More to come on this bit]

[SIZE=1][B]I too think this could work. You've explained about each part of OB clearly so players know there way around better and can have a better idea of the place. The RPG could go really far and I agree with Kane about the lack of set storyline gives people more room to be creative. Since there isn't much to stick too it should be great fun for everyone.

I can tell you this if you do make the RPG I'll be joining for sure. I just think the idea is great and could really, really work.[/SIZE][/B]

[color=#707875]You asked me about how the staff forum should be portrayed...well, I've had a think about it.

Basically I think it should be a secret building and nobody knows where it is. On OB, the forum is invisible to all members. So, I imagine that the building should be small on the outside...and hidden. It should look very ordinary from the street, but be very large and grand inside.

At least, that's my thinking on it. It's up to you how you choose to implement that. ^_^[/color]

[COLOR=#503F86]I've not actually finished Enter the Net yet (i've just been slacking off >.>), but I love the conceptualization of what the site actually looks like. That's something I'd not been able to put much thought into and this sounds absolutely great. Lovely lovely ideas ^___^

[i]But[/i] (and this is what I said when someone else said they wanted to make an RPG out of Enter the Net)- I would suggest caution when you're essentially roleplaying as yourselves.

You'd be surprised how many people have told/asked me to do RPGs based on it, actually. I've been cautious to thus far; they could probably work well but it'd need a fair amount of work to make sure everything fitted together all right. For one thing, the relations between people on the actual boards and the same represented characters in an RPG would be different, but trying to put them into a spontaneous fictional context might be difficult. I'd suggest taking a look at the Otaku Big Brother II thread in the Event Arena for an idea on how something like that might work. That's probably a better example to follow, heh.

You're welcome to start an RPG on anything you want- I certainly won't stand in your way, as it seems you've put a great deal of thought into it. I'd just advise being careful when it's something that's so relevant and wide-reaching with regards to its audience and participants, heh.[/COLOR]

Am I the only one envisioning Tokyo 3 as a Neo-Tokyo from TimeSplitters, or Blade Runner-esque? Something tech-grungy, you know? Rain falling, trash and newspapers blowing in the streets...really future-grunge feel to it. The n00bs are like junkies, laying on the sidewalk, craving their next hit of Naruto or whatever. Tech-noir would really provide a nice feel to the Anime Forum section in the RPG, I think. ^_^

And for some reason, I'm looking at the Play It section as a hybrid between Saffron City, Hyrule Castle, Mushroom Kingdom...I know you mentioned everything I'm saying, heh, but something that resembles Super Smash Bros' stage selection might be damn cool, and be a nifty way to incorporate all the different types of gameplay. Game Zones, as it were.

"Des, what's going on?!" Shinmaru shrieked, as another rumble shook the Mod HQ.

"Full-scale assault on Hyrule Castle! We move in three!" Desbreko replied.

"Sir!" Wingnut Ninja chimed in, "there are reports coming in from Saffron and Mushroom Kingdom!"

"What's happening?"

"Toxins, sir, toxins. Gas, methane, poison...they're spreading."

Something like that would be neat, It'd be fun, lol.

Alex, I love you.

Falling rain and blowing newspapers are alright in my book... I also think Tokyo 3 should be a bit cyberpunk-esque--like something from Ghost in the Shell or Bubblegum Crisis.

[color=#707875]When I named that category "Tokyo 3", I was obviously thinking of the city in Evangelion. So, yes...if Tokyo 3 were a physical location, that is how it would look. At least, that's my own line of thinking as the person who named it. But I think multiple interpretations are fine. ^_^

Also, I am not sure if you ever saw CrH's series of OB-based stories on myOtaku, but...he does some cool things (like using Quote Tags as ammunition). I think it would be fun to get really creative and think of how elements of the site would be represented in real life.[/color]

[size=1][color=SeaGreen]This idea is actually very cool. I like the way you took a normal forum and put it into some sort of "fantasy" land where every OBer lives, I guess you could say.

I definatley think this could work but it would most likely take ALOT of time and hardwork. So youd have to be working on it for quite some time, with alot of patience. I know I really couldnt do it, but since you had a big enough imagination to come up with this, I say, definatley try to make it work.[/size][/color]

[SIZE=1]Oh yeah you're really onto something there Alex, the whole junkie "noob" army from Hell would be an interesting little challenge for the Mods to fend off. The kind of run-down-urban-hell of the future would be a pretty interesting staging area for some parts of Enter the Game. Perhaps even borrow ideas from Terminator or Johnny Mnemonic.

Since we're batting around ideas for the looks of the different forums might I suggest that the Arena be based off something like a massive dome shaped Arcade. All the different RPG sounds echoing out from the different "games" in progress from their respective booths, blue neon light splashing over everything. Give each room the chance to customise their sign up booths from retro-horror to old skool action, even to highlights of RPGs from that day.

You could even go for an extreme-sports feel to it, maybe a skateboarding park with a kind of hacker feel to it, maybe a night time street racing scene a lá The Fast and the Furious. It's up to you man but I know whatever you pick it's going to kick some serious ***[/SIZE]

[COLOR=TEAL][SIZE=1]Thanks for the feedback and supportive comments people ^_^. Gav I'm already way ahead of you for the Arena stuff, I haven't got a fully formed idea for it yet I have an out line:

The Adventrue Arena [Keeping it the way I though it would be as opposed to the Inn] is a huge silver dome which houses all the RPGs and the rest of the arena is built around it.

The Recruitment stuff is like Movie Studios and such where the members go to audition for parts in the next big RPGs which I think is nifty ^_^. Also quite a few members live around the Arena cause it's really big and nice looking ^_~ with a few 'high-rise' areas such as [I]RPG Boulevard[/I].

And finally the Underground would be a sort of black market deal spread all over the Arena area. Such as comic book stores, writers guilds, nightclubs and all that kind of thing so it'd be a sort of seedy underworld to the spiffy silver glow of the Adventure Arena.

Even more good news ^_^. I've been talking to Solo and it appears we'll be linking EtG [Enter the Game] and the continuation of EtN [Enter the Net] in a kind of Anime/Manga deal with Solo dealing mainly with the story of the Mods and me dealing with the Members stories and so on.

I'm like James in that I thought of Tokyo 3 as the Evangelion Tokyo 3 but reading Sirens idea it seems that would be much cooler and make it a little more 'OB Real' if you get what I mean I.E. Using the Spoiler Tags as weapons and such.[/SIZE][/COLOR]

[font=Trebuchet MS]Yes. Yes it could.

There's always something popular about these spoof-things, especially when it's something you're familiar with (which I'm guessing is the case for everyone, considering).

I was picturing the Underground to be something like that. I guess that's because the name implies a sort of, well, [i]underground[/i]-type area. The wide area makes it harder for an iron fist to smash all at once, y'know. ^^

I don't see how it would [i]not [/i]work. Such silly questions.

Oh, of course you'll need fun ways to use different functions of the board. Perhaps explosions for deletion, and automated robotic knights with any assortment of evil-looking weapons that take care of banning...? There could always be different appearances for functions in different forums...

*is ranting*

I think I've made it clear that the idea is great. Continue [size=1][size=2]planning [/size]or suffer[size=2]![/size][/size]

[COLOR=TEAL][SIZE=1]^_^;; I'm starting to think it wasn't such a good idea to post this because people will hurt me if I don't post it, heh. On a RPG-Related note I'm looking for help in making a glossery of sorts for items and such we can use in the RPG like a Strike-Out whip or a Spolier-Tag blast etc.

If anyone fancies helping me just add me to your AIM and talk or send me a PM either way I'd be glad of the help ^_^.

[COLOR=DarkRed][SIZE=1]I'll gladly help you with that, Joko, just IM me if you want ^_^

I was thinking about the island this morning and I picture a large Lincoln style statue in the middle of the island depicting James, mod-rod in one hand, mouse in the other with a wire hanging down from it. It looked pretty cool in my head.... I could picture some underground cult rising up and having rituals while worshiping the statue at midnight XD I can be so sad?

Another thing I wanted to ask, this is more for your story side, 'Tales from the Game', my avatar is Alucard while I myself am female, could I still take his form and use that as my appearance?

Just a question, probably stupid but I wanted to make sure >_<

Ah yes, something else pertaining the Arena and the living areas, are they like apartments or are they separate houses, like smaller version of the main dome? Sorry if someone asked that or you've answered it, I couldn't see it anywhere but I am rather slow these days.

Anyway, as everyone else has said, this is a great idea and I'm sure you'll pull it off wonderfully. You've certainly put a lot of thought into it.

Wow, good idea, very original ideas with the portrayals of the different areas. But having their artwork come to life, Can you imagine about 30 Inuyashas in the same room... that would destroy the island. O yes and the all powerful mods... REVOLT!... ok maybe not... well anyways as long as the mods arent power hungry rapists then its ok!

[SIZE=1]Heh that sounds like something interesting, though I think it would more than likely be Adam as the statue considering he is [U]The Founder[/U] and almighty soveriegn of Otakuboards. I like the whole cult worpshippers of James though, perhaps even wars between different cults who worship different Mods, perhaps we need a security force for the new OB Island too.[/SIZE]

[SIZE=1]I actually see peoples houses being based of either their signatures of MyOtaku's considering they're already personalised it would make sense for them to play a role.

Does anyone else see the [B]Otaku Lounge[/B] as the bar from Cheers with Panda behind the bar moderating arguments between different Otaku's while they kick back and relax.[/SIZE]

[COLOR=TEAL][SIZE=1]I know I haven't posted here in a while but I'm trying to breath new life into "Enter the Game". I've still got a few descriptions to finish such as the Arena and some of the Prefecture, added to that I'm going to relocate all Member dwellings to an Island version of MyOtaku but unlike the forums these will be spread across the island close to the prefered forum of the member in question. My to do list is thus:

Finish the Island
Make some sort of list for items we can use in the RP i.e. Strike-Out Whip
Decided between Recruitment Thread or Invite Only RP
[STRIKE]Make some pie[/STRIKE]

[I]P.S. I'm still looking for comments and help so if you have something to say, do so ^_^[/I][/SIZE][/COLOR]

Well since you haven?t posted what the arena looks like yet it I imagined it like the Coliseum on the out side but when you enter it is more futuristic w/ flat screen computers built into the walls with a list of all the role plays recruiting. Then you would automatically get a PM saying that it has been closed and is now starting, you would go to the arena, and sit down in a pod like thing and a visor covers your face and your mind goes to the ?world? made up for the RP (something like The World in .hack//all of them).

For the under ground there could be a staircase that leads under ground ,under the Coliseum, and that?s where computers are attached to the wall and you type you want you think about the RP and them leave, or you could see people in the RP or who are interested and just talk about it.

I would join if this ever hit the INN :D

[COLOR=DarkRed][FONT=Arial Narrow]Wow, just wow. I have never seen an RPG so in-depth as this. I'm really new here so I'm sort of afraid to sign up for fear of being placed in the n00b army from Hell. But besides that, I think this would be really fun to join. I love you, man :luv:

I think this is a sweet idea, and you've put alot of thought into it. I know I'd join it. I'm actually viewing the arena as a huge dome, over 10 miles wide, with different sections. There's a futuristic section, a desert section, a rainforest, etc. At the top is a Star-Wars type space section. The Adventure Inn is a room that you hve to go through before you get in the dome, where you sign up adnd hope you get accepted. You can only be in 1 rpg at a time, and the people of different rpgs can't see each other. In fact, they can walk through each other!
The Arena Underground forum would be represented as an actual cave, under the dome. To get there, you go into the recruitment inn and there's a door to the side. You go through that door, and down a ladder, and your there! This could be used to discuss rpg elements, not to discuss actual rpgs.

What do you think?

[COLOR=DarkGreen][SIZE=1]To be honest I prefer Jokopoko's idea for the Inn, of having screens around the dome displaying the RPGs open for signups. And this is going to sound like I'm ingratiating myself with Jokopoko now, but I prefer his idea for the Underground too. Think outside the box, people, it doesn't have to [I]literally[/I] be underground - the idea of a sort of 'black market', underground in the sense of not being entirely legitimate, sounds more like the way I imagine that board.

I'm setting my mind to the arsenal for this RPG, starting now. Mod-rods are the obvious ones, but hopefully in a couple of days I'll be back here with a post full o'shiny, blasty OB-style weaponry. Hope I can help.[/SIZE][/COLOR]
