Godelsensei
Skippedry gets points for telling me about it, but I finally get to start another anime thread again! Yay! : D Genshiken, thus far, has followed the emotional exploits of a University student intensely into anime and manga, who ultimately just wants to fit in with his peers. However, as something that is hardly ever drawn upon, he finds he does not fit in as well as he thought he would. This group of elite otaku all know so much more about videogames and everything else than he does, creating the kind of sense of out-of-placement you'd expect from a sports anime or something within that vein. I was really impressed by how realistic this show felt. I mean, the characters are all unique, even if, thus far, it seems to be in a rather one-dimensional way (first episodes aren't something to go by with this kind of thing, though, of course) and none of them are particularly nasty, either. You feel like you want to dislike them for the prank they pull on our poor protagonist, but they're really okay guys, when you get down to it. (Aside from Saki, who is the Comic Party's Mizuki in this show.) I really appreciated the shot when you see him leaving his room, and you only see the poster of the girls in the swimsuits when he closes the door behind him. (I'd been wondering if they still used sliding doors in Japan, but enough anime has led me, by now, to have a firm enough belief that they do.) The animation style rendered the characters imperfect, yet still unrealistic enough to be nicely stylized, and guessing which anime every one's respective cel-midis belong in makes for an exceptionally good time, also. Something tells me this show is going to make me cry, eventually.^^" Good stuff.
Dagger
The second episode of Genshiken can only be described as stunningly funny. It's a rollicking good time--exceptionally well-directed, well-written and packed with anime in-jokes. The comedic timing is immaculate; this anime relies on genuinely clever riffs rather than an excess of super-deformation and yelling. I especially liked how
the camera cut back and forth between Saki agonizing over which clothes to buy and Sasahara (that is his name, right?) agonizing over which doujinshi to buy.
Of course, nothing can top Kohsaka. Amusingly enough, this is yet another show wherein Mitsuki Saiga plays my favorite character... Kohsaka is just unbelievable.
When he strolled into the club room, obliviously singing that Engrish anime theme song, I nearly had a stroke. I almost--almost!--feel sorry for Saki, haha.
Judging by the newly revealed opening theme, which I find oddly heartwarming, a female cosplayer will eventually join the Genshiken gang. I look forward to finding out what she's like. Oh, and thanks for the points. ^_^ ~Dagger~
Godelsensei
They're redeemable for cash prizes! : D I really loved the opening theme; the lyrics were, as you said, somehow touching. What I really enjoy about this show is how it manages to show such diversity among the characters, even though I haven't quite caught all their names yet. There's the dude with the glasses and mushroom cut who's simply not ashamed of who he his, contrasting from Sasahara, the guy with the stutter, and our friend with the ponytail. Also, there's a strong emphasis on trying to live up to some kind of standard, something people generally don't assosciate with the stereotype that Genshiken revolves around. I, too, am looking forward to the introduction of the cosplaying chick, as female geeks are just that much cooler than our male counterparts, neh, Skippedry?^^ Yeah, seeing
Kohsaka walk in singing in English was just priceless.
I laughed my *** off. xD
Dagger
Whoa, I'm impressed by how up-to-date Genshiken--in episode 3, one of the cosplayers shown was actually dressed up as Shinobu from 2x2 = Shinobuden (along with a scarily accurate Onsokumaru plush). The chairman is... creepy... -_- To make things even more confusing, isn't there a girl in Kujibiki Unbalance also known as "the Chairman"? I was fairly certain that she's the somber-looking childhood friend with wavy blonde hair (and Sasahara's idol, of course), but then he and the Manga Club turncoat started talking about Genshiken's chairman. On that subject, I sure hope the bratty Manga Club guy gets what's coming to him; he needs someone to wipe the ever-present annoying smirk off his face. Ah, Madarame rocks. The third time he pulled his hand out of his pocket, I did a huge double-take despite already knowing what was coming. It seems like episode 4 will be quite interesting, heh. I have a feeling that the preview was being deliberately misleading, but either way I'm eager to meet the cosplay chick and see how Saki will react to a female otaku. ~Dagger~
Genshiken
I can't get enough of Genshiken. i eagerly await April or May when the 3rd box set comes out. IMPATIENCE :wigout:
Dagger
Today at Katsucon, Media Blasters announced that they have the rights to Genshiken (along with several other anime, including the Phantom OVA and Hi no Tori). I'm not totally sure that this is something I'll want to run out and buy right away--although Mitsuki Saiga's prominent role makes that rather tempting--but we'll see. It's nice that it's licensed, in any case. ~Dagger~
Kita Erindur
I just finished Genshiken today. I enjoyed watching it so much! I am kinda sad its over... I'll probably buy the manga, and end up watching it again in a couple of months. I loved the way Saki's character changed over the series, she seems to become more and more open to reading manga, and talking about it. Shes also more open to the others in Genshiken. I also think shes more calm. At the beggining, when she sees Kohsaka, shes kind of giggerly girly, nearer the end shes much more down to earth. Most of the time. The Chairman freaked me out too.
I really want to know what it was he used to black mail Saki, if that was what he was doing. He seemed to know something she wished he didn't.
Has anyone seen the OVA of Kujibiki Unbalance? And can anyone can that opening song out of their head? only1specialed
you gotta be joking me this is all that was written about the genshinken. ill admit i havent seen the anime but ive read the manga. ive been meaning to buy the dvd's but since im in iraq right now i really dont have time to watch that stuff. i think that everyone in here should watch this anime cause this is pretty much how most people are (at least i know a good few like them) i really like how they keep messing with saki trying to get to do stuff anime related. i cant help but laugh cause thats how normal people are when im around them. i cant help but feel sorry for her especially cause of her boyfriend (forgot his name at the moment) cause hes just so ....... dense. i dont know why there as many post on here as there should be. im pretty sure theres alot of people who can relate to this anime
only1specialed, here at OtakuBoards, we greatly emphasize the concept of having clear, easy to read posts. Guest hamtarocake
Does anyone else enjoy this anime? It's about a club in a Japanese college called Shiiou University. The members in the club are all hardcore otaku..well except for one of the members whose boyfriend is an otaku. It's a very interesting anime and it really shows how otaku in Japan live their day-to-day lives. The story is mostly focused on Kanji Sasahara who is a Freshman entering college and looking for a club to join. As the series progresses Sasahara goes from a Freshman to a Senior and utlimately becomes an even bigger nerd than he was before entering college. My favorite character particularly is Kousaka the hardcore video gamer of the group who seems clueless on just about everything. I'm currently watching Genshiken2 fansubbed. Kasuke
I've witnessed Genshiken not to long ago, and I thought it was very cool and different from everything else I've been watching lately. Some of those people in the anime actually remind me of a few friends in r/l, and it gave me a more knowledge on japanese anime life style. They had good comedy in it as well, I don't know if I had any particular favorite character though. As for Genshiken 2, I've yet to see it, which I should probably do sometime soon before I forget. Guest Itsumo
This series quite quickly became one of my favourites thanks to how different it was to any other anime I'd watched. Can't say I've watched many slice-of-life series, but Genshiken seems to surpass any label given to it. I'm also looking forward to Genshiken 2. I refuse to watch it before the entire season has been released so that I'm not left in the lurch at some point. An added bonus is that Dattebayo are fansubbing it, so we can expect some pretty decent subbing.

I justed finished my second run though of the first 12 episodes and I just really, really enjoyed it. You really see Kasukabe grow throughout the series and the episode where its just her and Madarame in the club room is just awesomely funny. If I knew any of the members in RL, I would totally hang out with them.
Fasteriskhead
Just a heads-up for the fans (spoiler-free): Genshiken 2, episode 5 is absolutely the funniest, smartest, best 23 minutes that I've seen in months, at least since Dennou Coil 12 (the infamous beard episode). And, with that in mind, I propose that Ogiue be canonized as the patron saint of anime. EDIT: oh, and I absolutely hate the new op song, so a couple of weeks ago I stripped it out and Halko'd things up. Seriously, I'll never understand why they didn't call Manzo back after the work they did for season one.
Nikorasu
Genshiken 2 is very well done, and anyone who liked the first series like I did will enjoy it as well. Episode 5 is hilarious, and it probably handles this particular scenario better than it did in the manga. Keep in mind though, there's three Genshiken OVA episodes between Genshiken and Genshiken 2 that were released with the Kujibiki Unbalanced DVDs. They are basically episodes 13, 14, and 15 of the first series (as those are the actual OVA episode numbers) so you may want to watch those before watching Genshiken 2. Also, last volume of the Genshiken manga, volume 9, comes out in the states this month.
Dagger
Media Blasters (as expected) has the license to Genshiken 2. Part of me is thinking of waiting until the eventual two-season box set rather than getting the singles as they come out, since I keep putting off getting season 1. :animeswea ~Dagger~
Nikorasu
I'll probably put off season two until Media Blasters does the $40 box set like they did with season one. I wish I could just get the box to put my three volumes of season one in.
Momishin
Ive read a bunch of the graphic novels, I think it's absolutely hilarious. I would have to read them again to say which was my favourite part though its been too long -_-; . BUt I do remember my fave character who thinks he was a snake in a previous life XD
LazLong
Totally loved this series. I'm going through the manga now and went ahead and ordered the box set DVDs. The characters are believable and likable. Some of the episodes were just funny as hell. I feel like I've had a good look into the life of Otaku over in Japan. I was just sad that the series ended when it did. There seemed like so much more that could've been covered. The manga takes you a little further than the anime, but it still leaves a lot unsettled. I did hear that there's a book coming out in Jan 08 with a side story for Genshiken. Here's the link to Heisei Democracy ...
