Art Silence

Well, my teacher gave us Thanksgiving break to do four drawings, and here I am at 1:00 am the night before trying to get it done. Typical. >_o We had to think of a theme to go off for our portfolio which includes 24 pieces and must be completed by May-ish, and I chose to do it on Silence. I don't talk much during that class, so they should see why I picked it. :p heh We also needed to consider various mediums to do the pictures in, and the preliminary sketches due had to be detailed and colored.

I don't have the drawings done [i]quite[/i] yet (read: haven't started), but I do have the pictures. Because of procrastinating time contraints, however, I could only get 3 pictures done, but it's better than nothing.

1. [b]Shh[/b] - This one should be pretty obvious. The finger over the mouth symbolizes not talking, and thanks to some simple alterations with Photoshop, you could say that the vibrant colors in the face are the pent up feelings that aren't spoken.

2. [b]Faceless[/b] - The silence of the computer. A way that you can talk to others online in silence and remain nameless/faceless. I added graininess to sort of show the distortion of reality.

3. [b]Do you know me?[/b] - Mouth closed, eyes shut.. just the face. Do you truely know the real me?

I'll add the drawings once I finish. Feedback on the pictures would be nice, though. ^_^

Just kidding. But I am really not liking the colors in the first one - they are too bright and obnoxious. I see the effect you were going for, but it's overdone. Good idea though - try lightening up on the colors.

Second one was cool, I liked the grainyness effect, but the glare off your face was blinding. Try mixing in some more flesh tones, to once again, lessen to effect of too much of one strong, concentrated color.

Third one was my favorite. It's morbid but also meaningful, it reminded me of the matrix. My only complaint is that the face is a little too zoomed in. Maybe try having the face pulled back from the camera a little, with your hair in your face and make your hair all black and wispy (with your mad photoshop skillz.)

If I lightened it up (and I'm assuming toned it down to regular skin tones as well[/color][color=black]), there's less to say about the picture to make it.. stand out, and what's the point in subtlety if your objective is to magnify your feelings through art? Sure, you've got the silencing finger, but the colors can broaden the view and leave many different possible levels of interpretation, such as the example I gave earlier of keeping vibrant emotions silent. And that's what I'm looking for, honestly. My art teacher got pretty excited about this one and wanted me to paint a silk painting with all of the colors.[/color]

"captured in the world of the computer." Silence. Anonymity. I don't think it's that strong, anyway, though I suppose it depends on the moniter. Like, no outlines for the head, ears, hair, etc. The entire paper would be the face, and I'd draw in the eyes, nose, and "mouth." O.o;[/color]

Though I know the first one's colors are supposed to be like that, it's a little too pink. I like the second one where you can't really see the face. No offense if any taken. It just looks cool with the light supposedly shining into the face from the computer screen. The third one is just a little weird and I agree that it's a little too close up. But I do like the black and white colors better because color photos can sometimes ruin everything. just one question, how are you going to draw the whole thing? Wouldn't it be kinda hard?

The pictures below were representations of 'Do you know me?' and 'Shh' from the first post. I first sketched them using pencil, and then added colored pencil (yes, even for the black and white one). I wasn't satisfied with the 'Faceless' one, so I didn't scan that one in. ^.~ And after carefull thinking and talking to my teacher, I've decided to do the project on the 'Do you know me?' picture, in charcole. That works best because it's a medium that I haven't used all year, and my teacher has a lot of it. Keep in mind that these are quick sketches, done literally during the day that they were due. :p

One last thing: I can't draw lips. <_< And yes, I know my handwriting is atrocious.

The second one was good for a sketch, but, as you noted, the lips are little off. The hand was drawn nicely with good proportions, and I liked the toned-down colors. ;)

I don't think I'll ever be able to do good lips. And I don't know what I'm doing wrong, either. >_o

I actually did pretty good in the way of grades. I only had 3/4 of the assigned drawings done, so I should have gotten a 75, but the teacher liked them so much that she gave me an 85. :D *confidence boost* Not only that, but she had me bring in Photoshop today and show the whole class how you can play around with pictures.

I like the 'Shh' & 'Do You Know Me' photos over the 'Faceless' one. That one seems, very odd for some reason, and not the good way odd either, heh. The 'Shh' photo seems a bit too... dunno. Not bright, just.. off some how.

[U]The Drawings[/U]:

I love them both. I really like the 'Do You Know Me' one here. If you're planning on colouring it in, then I hope you do a really good job with it, but I don't see why you should mess with a good thing.

I actually like the 'Shh' drawing better here. The colours are great, but as you've already stated, the lips look odd. I like the hand in this picture alot for some reason. I like using charcoal to draw things with but it gets everywhere, as it looks like it did on this picture, slightly, to the right. *waves fist* Darn you messy charcoal. :D

I was planning on moving the 'Do you know me' picture to larger paper and then using charcole, but I'm not going to do any more with the pictures I posted.

Nah, I didn't use any charcole for 'Shh', just pencil and then went over it in colored pencil. Like I said above, I'm going to charcole the other picture, but I don't use charcole much and agree that it is pretty messy. ;p But so much of art is, so whatever, and I need to do a medium that I haven't used before anyway.

For "Shh" the thing I see about the lips, you made the upper lip go out too far. Its too wide. I hope that's the problem, because it'd be easy to fix if it is. The red of the lips kept going where there's actually only shadow.

I really like "Do you know me" too. It seems very quiet, where as "Shh" seemed loud, even in its silence. I may be one of the few here, but I think you should expand on the brightness of "Shh." Don't over do it, but it makes it very interesting. I actually think, it was colorful in the photoshop version, but it didn't quite strike me as right yet. The colored pencil one didn't really either. I don't know.

Also, I'd like to say you're lucky to have the art teacher you do. My art teacher has all of our art pieces planned, down to the subject and theme and everything. We're not even allowed to use photos of anything. She gets angry when you do. ^_^;; You're very lucky you get to draw what you want and stuff.



EDIT: I didn't want to make another post just to reply to Syk because I would feel like I'm getting off subject. Anyway, our Portfolio classes at my school do the same thing the sophomore and freshman classes do, though. All the same projects, even if that's not what the junior and senior portfolio classes are for.

I'm taking AP Studio, which basically asks that you create a portfolio of 24 pieces of art by the end of the school year, and it has to be of your own creation entirely. The class is very open-ended, so you're on your own for the most part. I've taken 3 years of art courses prior where the teacher regulates everything that you're doing, and this is my chance to apply what I've learned.

Your handwriting isn't that bad. You are really good with drawing, especially real life pictures. Some parts may be a little off but overall, they are great. And the coloring is good too. can you also post the one in charcoal?
