Anime music: Hot or Not?

What do you people think about anime music? Quite frankly I love it...Be completely honest: If there were 2 CD's and 1 CD Player, which would you listen to the most? The CD with anime music on it or the CD with rock/pop/rap/hip hop/country etc. on it? (There is only enough power in the CD player for you to listen to 1 CD).

I also enjoy listening to it. Especially when Im at a party or something like a party where there is dancing. It really gives you a beat to dance too.

But the 2 CD's to one player scenario: I would definatley go with the rock, hip hop, etc. CD. I like listening to that type of music more when I am alone-- the rock music I mean.

Anime music is not a genre. An anime might have a fully orchestrated score, it might be all jazz, it might be all rock, whatever. The 2 disc scenario doesn't make sense from that point of view.

My favorite music is not from an anime, although some anime has music I do enjoy. Honestly I've found more video game soundtracks I like than anime soundtracks.

Well, to say I like Anime music is an understatement. A severe one at that. I LOVE the soundtracks to shows, and I take music selection of show seriously. I believe it is a very important part of a show, this is my current discussion on that here.

Anyways, I can't answer that 2 CD situation because, I love music period. All types of music. In my line of work, you have to like all sorts of genres and mix and match. I have quite possibly over...god who knows how many OST's, of anything really. Movies, games, anime, sitcoms, to just regular standard music.

But yes, in relation to the topic question. I love anime music.

Anime music is a type of it's own music...Genre or not, you don't find InuYasha soundtracks in the Rock section or the instrumentals. Anime music is just a better way of saying 'InuYasha music', 'Trigun music', 'Cowboy Bebop music' and so on and so forth. I don't know what point of view you are coming from, but in my point of view it makes sense. Sure, anime does have some rock and such, but you don't hear Metallica do a lot of anime songs o.o It's mostly japanese music, so again, anime music is just another way of saying japanese type music

Okay- Metallica wouldn't do covers of anime themes because most of them are in Japanese and Metallica are a very American rock band. The two languages are so different it'd be almost impossible to try and compare them.

There is a huge difference between 'anime' music and 'Japanese' music. Japan has some very successful bands that have nothing to do with anime- the only reason it's called J-Pop/Rock here is because it's from Japan. Most animes are too, but the point is they are two separate sections in a music catalogue. And Japanese traditional music is separate from both, so it's an unfair generalisation to make.

You do get anime soundtracks in with the film and TV soundtracks if the anime is widely-enough recognised (which usually means it's been show on TV or in the cinemas). I could quite easily get a copy of the Spirited Away, Akira or Princess Mononoke soundtracks a few months ago in HMV. They were all in the soundtracks section. You won't get them in Rock because it's just not where they belong, even if they're a collection of songs. But even then, since anime still isn't mainstream enough a genre by itself, you'd be hard pressed to find them in normal CD retail shops.

Anyway, I am a big fan of anime music- I must have at least 35 anime soundtracks from various different series. I love the orchestrals and the songs- the songs even more than a lot of English ones. So much so that I'll generally only buy albums from Japanese bands now.

I don't know quite what it is about anime music that appeals to me more than other styles. I guess... one soundtrack can be so diverse depending on the mood of the scene it's trying to accompany. Outlaw Star, for instance, is one of my favourites because the range is so varied but each one isn't any worse off for it. When you get a really talented composer creating all the music, there's something about it that has that much more edge to it than Western scores.

Of course, you'd be hard-pressed to beat John Williams. But then, anime tends to use more electric guitars...

Solo, you are not understanding what I am trying to say. I am making a point that although anime music might have rock or hip-hop or whatever in it, you wouldn't find it in the rock or hip-hop section at a music store. Metallica is just using a sort of metaphor of all types of rock music and such. I may be vague at the moment because I have a headache worse then hell. Ok, anime music and japanese music might be two different things, I understand this, but if you find like BoA or Seesaw in a music store, they are probably going to have songs from anime such as Obsession or Every Heart. I am not trying to start a fight here, or trying to be rude in anyway, but some people jump right in before I can get my point across.

I think 'Anime' music is great, as Solo Tremaine described it. Diversities depending on moods and scenes helps give the musical pieces almost a life of its own. I think Anime Soundtracks take up 70-80% of my music selection in my car. Initial D soundtracks can make me speed sometimes though :smirk: . Only a select few American music CDs have a place in my car *evil laugh*. My dad really enjoys 'Anime' music as well. He's got quite a collection going for him, though his is still overshadowed by mine. I think I've got like 30ish CDs to his 5-10. Anyway, music in Anime rocks.

yeah, anime music is cool. im obsessed with the .hack//(any) music. my current favorite song is Tasogare no Umi, or Sea of Twilight. most of the songs on the soundtracks are by Yuki Kajiura and See-Saw, and they have some sweet songs. favorite one thats in english would be Aura. its a sad, haunting melody that sounds upbeat, but once you listen to it a few times, you realise what its actually saying. some of the music is kinda depressing, but i love it anyways

anyone else have a favorite .hack// song?

I love anime music, it's definitely hot. My favorite anime theme is the ending of Kenshin; it's the best ever. Now as for the CD thing, I would listen to the anime CD if I had to chooose one. I never get tired of anime music. It rocks my world, hahaha. Now if you had a CD of HIM, Malice Mizer, and Gackt or Anime, I'd pick the one with HIM, etc., lol.

Techno Vs. Anime for me. Unless it was The Pillows (FLCL) I'd go with techno. For me the ending theme in most animes pisses me off. I hate how they leave the cliffhangers and just drop you off. That and most animes I watch have a slower paced romantic type theme to them (I'm a dramatic).

Arrg! Anime music is not a genre! Nor is it something you can really group music into other than by origin. It is a music *category* perhaps, but because it features all sorts of genres you cannot reasonably prefer it to other categories by default.

Can you tell a piece is "anime music" just by hearing it? Hell NO.

In fact, I dare you to try sometimes, as anime and video game composers will overlap their work. Yuki Kajiura just did Xenosaga II's soundtrack, and she scored Noir and .hack. Only if you know the soundtracks to begin with will you be able to tell what's from where with certain songs. I repeat, there's no such thing as "anime music." There's not even such a thing as "movie soundtracks" as a genre, just a category. Movie soundtracks might be all rap, they might be Hans Zimmer, they might be total b.s. with random dialogue thrown in like Kill Bill's. If you "like movie soundtracks" that means you like every genre of music out there. Same goes for "liking anime soundtracks." There may be a few you like, but as soon as you generalize you start to sound, well, ignorant.

I have no anime soundtracks (because yes I am THAT pathetic and broke^^) but I'm hoping to get some for Christmas... anyways ScirosDarkblade I think you might need to cool down a bit... that?s just your opinion and some people might feel there is a distinct difference between anime soundtracks and other music?s.
As for choosing between an Anime soundtrack or another CD I?d pick the anime soundtrack? I don?t really have any favorite singers or anything and know practically nothing about any other music?
Earlier someone asked about dot hack music and I?d have to say my fav song from dot hack would have to be Key of the Twilight from .hack//SIGN ?gosh it?s been so long since I last herd it?

Well someone is PMSing a little...Ok, so we were wrong a little, there is no reason to explode and start posting rude ***** about it. It doesn't matter if anime music is not considered a genre, everyone knows what I am talking about...Like InuYasha music, .hack music...I mean it's pointless to say InuYasha music, Cowboy Bebop music, Trigun music etc etc: Hot or Not? Like I said before, anime music is just a shorter way of describing all of those song types...There is no reason to get so rude and obnoxious about it.

There's nothing rude or obnoxious about my post; it's simply very blunt. And I am not sure if you even understand my point yet honestly. You say "Anime music" means the collective of all anime music including Cowboy Bebop, Inuyasha, etc. Well, considering that particular category has such an extremely broad range of music (which might be no different from that of other categories, mind you), to say you "like anime music" would mean you like, in essense, everything. It does not mean you like exclusively the Cowboy Bebop OST. It means you like everything, and that means you have no standards when it comes to music quality as long as it comes from anime. That's why saying "anime music: hot" OR "anime music: not" is inappropriate and that is why I disagree with your thread title as well as your initial post altogether. Unless you do love all anime music, don't say you do.

Well, it doesn't matter if I say "anime music" or "i like anime music" or whatever...Most people didn't have to start something stupid over the title. Most people could understand something as vague as that. When I said "Anime Music: Hot or Not", I was referring to 'say what kind of anime music you like (inuyasha and such)'. Like what Twilight did, he said he liked .hack songs...Being vague is something I am good at...But there was no point or reason to start this whole stupid debate over the title :therock:

I really don't care. And it's wasn't a debate until you posted a rebuttal. And it wasn't a question of you being vague; it was a question of misrepresentation altogether. You asked whether someone would rather listen to anime music as opposed to music of some particular genre.

It's not vague; it's wrong. It's not a big deal, just like this entire thread isn't a big deal, but the last thing you should do is defend bull like that by saying it's not important enough. Sorry to go all Alex on you like this, but you're almost asking for it by claiming I'm starting a "stupid debate."

I love anime music, I love to listen to it all the time. I have a mix of different anime endings and openings I made myself, and my own 'InuYasha Soundtrack.' O_o

I couldn't say whether to pick which I would put in, it depends on the mood I am in. If I wanna listen to anime music, I'll listen to it. Same goes with the American music. But I would think J-Pop/Rock falls somewhere different from anime music, as Solo Tremaine said.

Hot! I like it! Only some animes though... Sometimes they can be "weak" songs...

Please add a little bit more detail to your post, Kid Blader. There's nothing wrong with short posts in and of themselves, but I'm sure you've noticed that this thread encompasses a whole lot more than just whether or not "anime music" is "hot." Thanks!

..ahem. Anyway.

My friend gave me some music from CowboyBebop, which I've been listening to quite a bit lately. Some of the songs are just...wow. I love them. Heh.

I don't have much other music available for me to play, but I do love the music in My Neighbor Totoro as well. Probably because I've watched the move so many times, especially when I was younger. The music is just...sorta comforting and familiar.

living on a prayer,
