The Big F's

I was wondering how many of you guys/girls out there actually live healthily.
I know personally that I don't, but I didn't realise just how bad it is until now.
A similar subject (or many) may have already been raised here in the Movies section, but I'll try to focus on the title.
I just saw the movie 'Supersize Me' - finally... - and some of it disgusted me. The amount of crap that's in that food is shocking. I mean, I know it's not exactly what you'd call healthy, but it's worse than I thought.
I'm talking about the big F's here guys. Fast Food.
I work at a local McDonalds, around 2-3 shifts a week (I'm 16, so it's about an average amount for people my age - with jobs).
Every shift is about 5-6 1/2 hours long, with a half-hour break depending on the length of the shift.
What do I eat during the shift? McDonalds. I eat it 2-3 times a week. And I'm only 16 for gods' sakes! Do you know how sickenning that is?!
I feel so sick right now I think I'm going to do something extreme like become a vegetarian. Hell it's healthier than what's in my body now.
I was wondering how many of you eat Fast Food regularly, and how I should deal with my breaks at work. How am I going to resist eating something on the McDonalds menu when the crew-room is just meters away from the kitchen?
Any suggestions for that?
I'm thinking of bringing a packed meal from home. A nice sandwich with some lettuce, tomatoes, chicken, cucumber...I'm sounding like a Subway ad.

I work with food servies, but thankfully it isn't fast food. Since I work at a college dining hall, I can have what tastes as good as a homecooked meal, to pizza, to burgers, to nachos and cheese, to omelettes, to deli and soups, salad, cereal, a bajillion desserts, every day that I work. And guess what? I'm SO SICK of all of it! I am so very thankful that in my job I have a variety because I just don't know what it would be like to eat the same thing over and over and over again, especially something that is so UNHEALTHY...

My boyfriend works at a fast food restraunt and has been for a little over a month and he complains that he is getting fat (give me a break). I suggested to him to take a sack lunch, but then he complains that he doesn't have any food at home. But that's the best I could come up with. If you could afford to eat out at a different place everyday, then I guess you definatel wouldn't be working at McDonald's.

Oh, and working out should be good, too. As long as you take care of your body and work out, it doesn't matter WHAT you eat. But I guess I need to practice what I preach. ^_^;

I eat fast food constantly. I mean, it's not like I skip out on meals my mom makes, I eat that stuff too. I work in a mall so the food court is always appealing. The alluring scents from Wendy's are all but easy to turn away from. I think Wednesday evening I had a triple quarter pounder with cheese, biggie fries, biggie drink, and 4 jr. cheeseburger deluxes. It was super yummy. Then I went home (because this was after work) and ate the spaghetti my mom made. I only had like 3 bowls vs. my usual more than 3. Anyway, back to the point, I eat fast food alot. I try balancing it out by eating a chicken caesar salad twice a week. I buy one of those big backs of Caesar salad mix and a thing of Perdue pre-cooked chicken pieces, throw it all together and eat it covered in Caesar dressing. I think the Caesar dressing takes away from the healthiness. You're probably thinking "OMG, it's Jabba the Hutt," but I'm not big at all. I usually run in the mornings, well not in winter because I like my body to not freeze, but I do situps/crunches and push ups fairly often. I'm not captain tall either. I'm about 5'8" and weigh a healthy 130ish pounds. I love my high metabolism.

I can't see how these people eat the crap. I work at a Wendy's and a good percentage of our "customers" are overweight. That and they'll either misorder something, (We don't serve MCnuggets people!) or they try to push open a pull door.

Working there also means that I do occasionally eat our food. Thankfully, I do a good amount of walking every day and when possible get one hell of a workout from DDR.

Yeah, I know some people like you. They just eat and eat and eat even more than I do, but remain rail thin.

I actually am trying to start running again. but like you say, it's C-c-c-c-COLD out lately!

Mu-ha ha. I'm also like him. There's no way I can think to get fat -- other than me eating until my stomach explodes for every meal, every day and my metabolism slows down. But I'm pretty sure it won't until I'm really old, because my mom's metabolism is still just as fast as when she was my age, and I have her build so... I'm guessing I'm staying like her for a while. Which is good. ^________^

Anyway, I eat fast food fairly regularly. I don't work at a fast food joint, so I don't have that temptation, but whenever I get the chance, I chow down. Chipotle ownz Wendys/Mikky D's/BK/everywhere else. Heheh. Go Burritos. But not the nasty ones from taco bell.

I avoid McDonald's unless I really have no choice. For example...

If I am by myself downtown or otherwise, and all I really have is a dollar in my pocket. Then I would go in and get a cheese burger. Other than that, I avoid Mcdonald's like the plague.

I hate all fast food places, though Taco Bell and Arby's are alright...only because there aren't that much grease.

The healthiest meat out there to eat is lamb. It's pretty good, if you can afford it.

Eating a fast-food meal once or twice a week is not going to kill you. Anyone could have told you that eating only fast-food is bad for you. Most people would have 21 meals a week, and 1 or 2 less-than-healthy meals are not going to kill you. If you eat mainly healthy, drink water, and exercise its not like you're going to die of heart complications at the tender age of 23. Someone who eats fast-food every day of the week is obviously both stupid and... stupid.

This is like McLibel; overreaction. I'm not supporting the actions of various fast-food companies, but this "OMG thiz stuf iz s0 bad 4 u im gunna di coz i eat it 2 timez a week" is stupid. Common sense, people. Heard of it?

*Points up* That's what I've been telling people.

McDonalds is not evil. It is a food brand that happens to provide food that may not be as healthy for you as, say, Subway. But does that make it evil? Should we bomb McDonalds because it's made a few people (read: idiots) fat? You know what? If you're so terrified about what's in food, stop eating. Save oxygen for the rest of us.

I saw Supersize Me. I watched it through. And I ate McDonalds that weekend, because I'm not some psychopath who's terrified of a little fat. Eating McDonalds constantly, without excersizing, is really bad. Eating it once or twice a week, and getting a little excercise is okay. From that same movie, there were two guys, one who said that he ate it once or twice A DAY, and he was fine. His friend commented, "get on a treadmill people. (Paraphrased)"

Do not fear Fast Food. Don't hate it. And certainly don't sue it if you get fat (or, for that matter, if you get burnt by coffee... ).

Well, that's my three cents. Take it or leave it.

-ULX

PS, I'm aware that the phrase is two cents. So don't try to make me out as some kind of idiot, k?

I've always eaten pretty well. I grew up with all the healthy, delicious food I ever wanted--my mother was and still is an amazing cook, very versatile and highly skilled. We just didn't keep soda or chips or sugary cereal or Hostess cakes around the house, so I wasn't given the chance to develop a taste for real junk food (when I want to pig out, I gorge myself on Cheerios or sticky rice). Until high school, I had never tasted a Pop Tart or Twinkie, and ate McDonald's perhaps two or three times a year. One's diet has everything to do with one's environment. I'm just really lucky that living with my family permanently ingrained in me a lot of healthy eating preferences and habits.

Whoa Dagger. I've never heard of that... ever... But you're one healthy dude!

Yeah, I exercise about half the year, during the soccer season, then chill out the other half. I really should stay in shape year round, but ... I'm lazy. Oh well.

I guess it has something to do with me being young or something, but I eat a LOT of take-out and it never really effects me. Of course it's not junk food like McDonalds or anything, but like sandwhiches and stuff. Or like a salad from Chick-fil-A. Mostly because we're a busy family and my mom just picks up something on the way home for me to eat, even though she's an awesome cook. :)

But my mom never gets soda, sugary breakfast items, sugary snack items in general, chips, or anything 'fattening' and our house is usually only filled with orange juice (I'd die without it), fruits, and random Korean food. The only times I can actually eat junk food is when my mom gets it for me (rarely) and when I'm at a friend's house/party. Then I'm like a pig, and I will eat anything that looks fattening and good in my sight. :D

Dude, you don't need to be so blunt about it.
Then again, I saw your point before anyone even replied to this thread...I posted and thought "Man, you sounded like such a whiney little bugger!"
The thing is, I never mentionned my regular diet, which is mostly snacking out on crap until dinner.
Well, ever since school finished anyway.
Which was about a month ago.
Baron, your reply seemed like a nice, reassuring one until you came out with your backhanded slap.
Enough of that though.

On to ULX's little rant.
I'm sorry if I implied that I'm a "psychopath who's terrified of a little fat". I just don't want to lose my gorgeous figure :smirk:
No, but seriously, anyone who wants to sue McDonalds or any fast food restaurants because they're fat does have another thing coming.
Who ever suggested bombing a McDonalds? Or that anyone was terrified of what's in food? You're a little protective on this matter, ULX, or so it seems anyway. I think someone's a little cynical now aren't we? :p

I'm glad to see that someone other than myself eats crap constantly DarkSesshoumaru ^_~
My metabolism is pretty good, considering what I eat and the fact that I've never been "plus-size".
But I stopped and thought for a moment after 'That Movie' (as McDonalds likes to refer to it). Can you stuff up your metabolism if you eat the wrong kind of stuff and have an attitude that refuses to let you excercise?
I realise that the question was worded wrongly, but it's not going to leave me alone until I get an answer. And a clear one.
I asked my parents and they said "That's a good question," then went back to whatever beading or work theay were doing beforehand.
How's that for an unclear answer?
So yeah, can you stuff up your metabolism if you don't eat properly and do little excercise?
Baron, you seem to be full of answers, why don't you take a shot at it? And how about you ULX? I'd name everyone else as well, but your posts stood out from the rest, namely because they targetted actual people.
And I realise that some of what I say seems contradictory, but it's often hard for me to get my point across without getting owned several times :p

And thanks for the tips Queenie ;)

That was the kind of dramatic exaggeration I was referring to. Obviously, eating McDonalds or other fast-food very often isn't good for you, and I would consider 1-2 meals of it a week as acceptable. I wasn't only targeting you, I was targeting the whole anti-fast-food mentality that has sprung up recently. Especially such 'documentaries' as Super-Size Me. It is just common-sense that shows that fast-food is not particularly good for you. Why the big fuss? If people learned two concepts, that of 'moderation' and 'common-sense', then we wouldn't be having this problem.

That was pretty much what I was going to say. Kitsune, I wasn't necessarily saying that you were a psychopath who's afraid of fat, I was just referring to people in general. Sorry if it came of like a personal attack. And yeah, I'm a little cynical, but then again, I was raised on Dennis Miller and Bill Mahr. As Cartman put it, "it warped my fragile little mind."

I guess I did take it a little far in my rant, with the bombing thing, but it seems like that's the mentality we're heading towards. We, the people, have made our bed, and now we want someone else to fix the poorly folded sheets. It's aggrivating. And when I get aggrivated about a subject, I tend to rant a little, often a little too much.

Onto your question...so you're asking if you can change your metabolism by eating too much fast food, right? I think that it is possible that you can mess up your body with enough, yeah, but destroying your metabolism? I think I need a couple years of Med school before I can tackle that without seeming like a know-it-all.

*ahem* and to actually answer the question at hand....

Being practically broke, while I was living on my own up until November, I ate at Carl's Jr. on a regular basis during the week. Otherwise I ate at Panda Express. There wasn't much of a chance for me to buy groceries...when I did it was only chicken breast pieces and rice, to be stir fried with onions, cumin & thyme. I hadn't bought fruit in months.

But now that I live with my mom, and she is more than willing to buy the groceries, my diet has improved. I eat alot of sausages (chicken & pork, lots of different flavors) along with a little bit of fruits, alot of juices in the last week especially (since I was running a fever & risking dehydration), tons & tons & tons of vegetables. I've found that these eating habits have made it seem easier for me to function in general...I don't feel as sluggish as I did when I was a regular at the Carl's Jr. across the street from me.

And when I worked at Starbucks I drank an awful lot of "bar" drinks - drinks made using the espresso bar - but got sick of Frappuccinos quite quickly, especially working for the highest selling Frapp store in the district.
Oh, and working out should be good, too. As long as you take care of your body and work out, it doesn't matter WHAT you eat.[/size']
Bull. Working out will, admittedly, keep you slim and trim even if you do eat lots of fatty foods. But at the same time, those fats will still clog up your arteries even if you're skinny. You know those naturally thin people who can eat like a horse and not gain a pound? Everyone envies them because they can eat what they like, but they have to what what they eat, too. They might not gain weight, but the long term effects of eating badly are still there.

Anyway, I work in a chain similar to McDonalds. Not exactly the same market -- we sell 'healthier' food for one; our chicken is roasted, not fried, and so one -- but I know how hard it is not to eat the food you sell.

Although, at the same time; McDonalds has the new 'Salads Plus' Menu out over here, which is directed at a healthier person. Stuff like lettuce, yogurts [I swear there's a 'h' in there somewhere, lol!], lean beef burgers and so on are more nutritional options to the normal McDonalds fare. I know that my store, too, is changing to accomodate people who want to eat healthier; we have salads and rolls and stuff, now, too. Does American McDonalds cater to that market?

Personally I find that working in a fast food store decreases my wanting of it. Generally I really love anything home-cooked. I have really strong principles about what type of food I eat at home. Supermarkets, to me, are all well and good to stock up on things like Toiletries, but I like to buy my meat form a butcher, my bread from a baker, and my greens from a grocer. It has less preservatives, for one thing. And also, they taste better. So when you use that food to cook stuff, it tastes delicious. My mum makes this gorgeous lamb cutlet thing with mustard [at least I believe it's mustard -- must get the recipe, lol!] seeds and stuff, and I love it something fierce.

Anyway, to answer the question; my suggestion is that, if your McDonalds is in a complex or something -- or near another, healthier, shop that's only 5 minutes away or something -- just walk there. Not only will the walk [probably] wake you up, but it's also pretty good for you. And you'll eat healthier at the same time. Most of the McDonalds in my town are, in fact, near other food stores, but that might be different where you live, heh.

Hope I helped in some way.

P.S. What the hell is a twinkie?

You could be one of my children. Fast food is only one place for us, In n' Out Burger since every thing there is fresh made with real meat and poatos instead of the chopped mush you find elsewhere.

All of my children know how to cook, Ky isthe best. If you can't cook maybe we should start a recipe thread, it really isn't hard, much healthier for you, cheaper than eating out and you can cook, eat and cleanup in less than an hour. If it took more than that I would eat out more often.
And what is a twinkie?
Whoa. Another shocker. A twinkie is a yummy, fattening cream filled sponge cake. It's better than it sounds, really!

Well, Lady Rin, your facts are correct, but I'm not so sure about the set-up, clean-up time. I guess it has something to do with the size of your family, which I'm guessing is somewhat small.

Yes, cooking your own food cheaper, and healthier, but many people do not have the time to cook their own meals with school, job(s), and other responsibilities weighing them down. I guess this whole discussion is a big matter of how you've been raised, and what is 'normal' for you.
