MyOtaku Intro Images

James and I were chatting about our respective MyOs, and how we create different Intro images for them with each theme change, and how it's neat to see the progression of them over time.

We both thought it would be interesting to make a thread about it, and invite members to post their various MyO Intro images, to see what kind of images people make, what their styles are, etc.

So, here goes. I suppose this is a general discussion/critique thread, so be sure to include some feedback and/or background on your various Intro images. ^_^

I find that I have a very distinct flavor when it comes to my MyO Themes...they're always very "me," no matter what they are. I suppose that each of the themes directly relates to my personality in some way.

Spinal Tap (This Is PoisonTongue) is a really satirical fictional/real British heavy metal band from the early 80s, and I love satire, I love the movie, and generally, it's just really fitting for me. I like satirizing things.

The Clown theme was something that kind of bounced into my head. I had remembered an old children's book I used to have...I believe it was a Dr. Seuss book about spots, and the background to the theme came to me pretty much immediately. The Clown theme followed shortly thereafter.

NES and Star Wars...come on. Do I really need to explain that one? lol *points to Rebel Scum links in Siggy*

Marvin the Martian...is my favorite Looney Tunes character ever. He's quirky and fun, and he wants to blow up the Earth because he wants a better view. It's all about location. ~_^

These are the two I've used so far. They are quite different, but you can probably tell that they were made by the same person. I'm also going for a male/female/male/female type rotation at the moment. So my next image will be male, followed by a female and so on.

I thought I'd also share this image, it's hardly finished...maybe 10%. I'm not sure if I'll continue working on it though, as I'm not really getting into it at the moment.

I think I'll put my next one up after I post the actual theme. I really like it though, I think it's the best one I've done so far. I might add it in another post or something.

It'll be cool to see everyone's myO intro images in here. ^_^

These are my splash images that I kept, ranging form the earliest to the latest. There are some missing,
unfortunately.

The first image for my New Myotaku, which reflected my new name, Shinji, without the surname Ikari. The logo was based on Otakuboards and TheOtaku designs, and the "Ikari" being scratched out was based on both WWE's "Get the F Out" promos, and WCW's Souled out logo in which they crossed out the nWo logo (the last time they placed the nWo logo on their logos)

I doubt I'd do one of this size again, lol.

The one that replaced it soon after, smaller, more sleek looking,. At the time the idea was to always have the "MyOtaku" in a grey bar down the bottom.

Why it says "Otakuboards" on a MyO spalsh? I don't know.

Again, I doubt i'd do one of this size again. Created after watching Apocalypse Now! for the first time, accompanying a Space Odyssee theme, which is now lost.

And of course, used in the time leadign up to the launch of V7 OB.

Fiery coolness. Done soon after figuring out a fire text effect. Looks like a "flame grilled Burger King" promotion, lol.

GTA badassness. XD, The most recent theme to be thrown around, and the only one ot have a various form. Though the beige version of it was rather, bleak.

Merry Christmas from the hood. I wanted to do an unconventional Christmas theme, you know? one without chestnuts roasting on an open fire, little jack frosts, reindeers with red noses, pine trees, and Santa Claus.

What better than to hip-hop Christmas up, and give it GTA urban-style overtones? Quite poissibly a lot of other things, but, but.... NEXT!

And the next one to feature on my MyOtaku......

Whooops! Did I just leak a preview?

I've only changed my myOtaku layout once and I made this one. I found the girl picture from a site and I tweaked it a little. Then, I added the text on the left. The text are actually links to different sites I love.

I remember Godel once said it looks like a book cover of an RPG or something.

The theme that went with this was by far my favorite myO theme ever. It's just an unmodified image, heh, but I loved the way everything came together.

[ooh, I found this little button I made with it: ]

Just a thing I drew and scanned in. I'm fond of this image, heh.

^_^ Done for the 10,000+ members thing a while back. A long while back, heh.

Mm, I liked this layout too, although apparently no one could read my text. Heh.

Modesty at it's best.

What I've got right now. I was going to make a Duckie (Another Land Before Time character) avatar to go with it, but I couldn't find an image I liked.

I'm sure there have been others, but I don't have them on this computer
(and they don't seem to be uploaded to my image hosting site any longer.)

I keep trying to pick out a new theme, but I haven't gotten very far. I've spent a lot of time playing with eventually discarded images, though.

till the words don't rhyme,

I love James' images too, in fact, I love James' new layout, reminds me of citrus fruits ^^;

I've only had one intro image and it's the one I'm using for my current layout, I like it even if it is only simple.

Great idea here. I actually went through a reminiscent process like this not so long ago, when designing buttons for [LSN]. Anyway, here goes. Not comprehensive, not ordered, but here.

Big Day Out Banner

Designed for a BDO theme I had. Ripped from the BDO website. I liked that theme. Colourful, but tasteful.

The Cat Empire Banner

Accompanied a deliciously dark theme, done off the artwork on TCE website. Looked very snazzy, or I thought so anwyay. I loved the ragged edge feel of the picture, and the background [i.e. with the white strip on the side] that I've been using for my table backgrounds for ages was reminiscent of Kill Adam but the edges I got from TCE site. It took me so long to get it right. Nice stuff.

Hagar Welcome Banner

Of course, done during my Hagar phase. Hagar is still my profile picture for here as well, lol. I liked this one.

Current Banner

My current Intro image. Sadly, I don't have too many intro images. I really should go through and organise all of my work even better...browsing through my picture archives has taught me that, lol. So many banners.

Just thought I'd post here again to mention a theme change at MyO, and the accompanying Intro image:

I'm really, really pleased with how the entire theme came out, and the Intro image just works. I'm fairly pleasantly surprised that I was able to figure out what font the Anchorman logo uses (Bolded, capitalized Impact...go figure). All in all, it's my best theme yet, I think, and one of my best Intro images yet. Kermit the Frog (my old theme, heh) just can't stand up to Ron Burgundy.

Oh, Shinje, try using the font CHILLER for the Apocalypse Now text. With a bit of skewering and re-sizing, you can get really damn close to the actual look.

I've attached two images, heh, but I've had a lot more themes than that. But they're all on my wasted old computer so getting them off isn't an option. u.u

The first image is made out of Legacy of Kain concept art, and was basically a crop and border job. The colours that went along with it were all very swampy, but it was too wide for the intro 'area' and had to be forced below it. >.< After my KoRn theme, I used this the longest, heh.

The second image I made about... fifteen minutes ago. lol It goes with my Manson silohuettes theme, and is from a pretty common pic. The pink watermark thing behind the text is my logo thingy, and... yeah. Heh. I'm damn proud of this one, though I'm sure I could refine the vectoring some more. That's for another day though, lol.

Yeah, I actually found an Apocalypse Now! font at Filmhimmel, after that theme had passed away.

So, i decided to do a new splash in the theme of Apocalypse Now! just to see what it'd look liek If I was doing the theme now, and it works quite well. So much so, that I've decided to revisit the theme.

I'll call it the Redux, lol.

I don't remember where or why the inspiration struck me, but I needed a myO introduction. I most likely stole the idea from someone else (was it Mei? I think it was Mei).

Anyway, the first one is a Naruto themed one. I was torn between using leaves or scanlines (both together looked really bad). I settled for scanlines since I never used them before, and I thought they looked color. Still, leaves, since all the characters were from Leaf Village, would have been a nice touch.

The second one is of Noir. I made this shortly after grabbing the artbook that had one of my favorite Noir pictures in it (the one with Kirika holding the Kitty - I could talk forever about that). I had to make a picture with it, heh.

The next one is from Haibane Renmei. I wasn't pleased with it at all. In fact, I still don't like it to this day, haha. I don't know, it just didn't come together as well as I hoped. Still, Reki and Rakka are there and that was the main goal.

The next one... Oh man, the next one. It was an unworthy tribute to one of my all-time favorite characters. He has to be one of the coolest characters around. While there's so much you know about him, he's still enigmatic. Is he married or not? I don't even think the creators know, haha. To have a main (or side?) character this undeveloped and yet interesting at the same time is quite the feat.

The Nash one was also around the time I started ranting around, which is what the little text in there is about.

Like the Haibane Renmei one, the Gunslinger Girl one I was very unsatisified with. It's essentially two pictures put together. I didn't know what to do with it.

Well, the last one, if I could have put it up (5 pic limit apparently) would have been the rejected Tsukihime one of Akiha. In place of it, you can check out the Uchiha-made welcome banner right now at my myO, heh. I don't plan to change it for quite some time either (and before you ask: no, I am in fact a guy).

My favorite from Lore's is the Asthmatic Butterfly one as well, even if I never got it. It just has an interesting... vibe about it, haha.

James, are your images supposed to be like those iPod ads? They just give off that impression (at least the second one does).

I think my favorite out of PT's was the Marvin one. You should have stuck with that theme. I liked it, heh.

Baron, because of your extended use of Hagar, that's really all I expect when clicking your link (to this very day).

Well, I thought I'd dig up this thread and contribute to it again. A few people have updated their myOtaku intro images since this thread was last used, so it may be useful to others as well.

Due to a change in my layout, my intro images are now a lot larger. I notice others have adopted this approach too. Here is my current intro image:

Basically, there isn't a lot to explain here. This is a very simple image though - it was edited by me, but the figure isn't drawn by me. In this case I just didn't want to invest the time required to draw my own figure. "COMA GREY" is in between Black and White. If you're a Manson fan and you know what those songs are about, that'll give you an idea of the meaning behind COMA GREY.

I only have a few other images that I've actually stored, so I will show you what I have.

This image is probably one of the more meaningful ones, at least in terms of the thought put into it. At the same time, it's reasonably simple. It's based around the themes that The Golden Age of Grotesque deal with - particularly the "Entartete Kunst" (or degenerate art) exhibitions during the Nazi Germany period. These exhibitions were designed to mock "degenerate" art that was considered un-Germanic by Hitler.

The idea with this image is to celebrate that art. The imagery hidden within this picture include various things - including Manson, golden age film and lustmorde paintings.

The spade on the right represents a heart being pierced from above - it directly relates to "lustmorde" or "sex murder", which has been a prevalent subject in art during various eras in history. It was particularly popular during the 1920's and 30's and again, the album that this image relates to references it. The lyrics written all over the image also reference lustmorde specifically.

Surrounding the spade is a red diamond, which includes a still frame from the Zapruder film (the film of JFK being shot). It is the first frame that actually shows the impact of the bullet - it is therefore pretty obscured and is there primarily because it relates to one of the themes within some of Manson's work (Holy Wood in particular).

So yes, it's an image with significant meanings, but graphically it's extremely simple - save for the fact that it's quite multi-layered.

This is an intro image that I never actually used. It's based on Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. It may not seem very edited, but it's actually been heavily edited - several frames were spliced together, to create this scene. I was going to make it clickable, so that the trailer for the film would appear in the place of this image.

This was really a pretty random piece for me. I wanted to try something different and I wanted a subject that I'd never used before. So, I chose Madonna. I wanted something that was centered around music, but I also wanted to choose something that would probably be a little unpopular with a lot of people. In other words, I wanted to deliberately focus on a pop star rather than some obscure band.

The original image is very different to this one - I'll see if I can find it to put it up later for comparison. In particular, this image utilizes a great deal of brush work, layering and retouching in order to achieve the final result. Photomanipulation isn't something I've been involved in for a long time, so I thought I'd play around with this and see what the result would be.

And finally...Wonka! What you see here is basically a failed experiment. I was attempting to create something a little unique in the silhouette style I'd been using a while ago, but the result wasn't so good. It just wasn't going in the right direction, so, despite all of my drawing and fiddling, I binned it. It's one of the rare few failed pieces of graphics that I've actually kept lying around, lol. So there you go.

I thought I'd add this one, since it was done fairly recently. It actually took quite a while to make, because I had to draw the tree and everything from scratch. The tree was originally on some artwork on the Charlie and the Chocolate Factory site...but it was heavily obscured, so I simply re-drew it from the beginning. I think it came out relatively well, at least better than some of my other Wonka images.

Most of your images don't seem to be working for me, James.

Anyway, here are my MyOtaku intros...

This one was briefly touched upon with my other post here, but this is how the final product actualyl turned out. I made this Apocalypse Now! Theme, as my second, to test out the Apocalypse Now! font by Jay R. Zay of Dafont.com.

I made this theme to coincide withthte new year, i always make a theme to kickstart the new year, as you can see in my first post here witht hte 2004 one. It is the finalised version of my last post's 'sneak peek' teal and purple theme. My projects have a tendency to vary immensley from the beta to the finished product.

This was for a theme based on the movie Duel that I watched just prior to changing themes, i thought the movie was good enough to be my next theme, so I made an intro based loosely on the DVD cover/ Poster. I desaturated the image to dull it out since I was using a very grey color scheme.

This theme was based around Paracute '05, a Christian music festival. Failing to fidnt he Parachute '05 font, I used Brush Script MT instead.

I decided to do an Evangelion theme while keeping the grey-ish look of My MyO. I took a stock image of Asuka and grayscaled it. After I made this theme, i decided it was too gray, so I made the text, and the site border, red. I never liked the way the text stood out, it's too blocky for my liking.

The Herbie theme was one I put the most effort into, and the one I dislike most of all. I felt that the theme never met my expectations, and failed to deliver.

After this theme, I decided to stop updating MyOtaku for various reasons, I took down all the imagery, never to return to MyOtaku or OtakuBoards again, funny how things work out...

Five months later, here I am, I used a reduxed version of my Asuka theme to kick off a new era. This iteration of that theme didn't last very long, but I was much more satisfied with the text, it wasn't obtrusive to the image, and didnt detract from the theme..

After that, I decided to totally redo the intro to incorporate a new technique of mine, desaturating the background to draw attention to the subject, after I couldn't find the same image used for the old Asuka theme, I settled on a new image of Asuka in a different setting. I used a pink and black candice text to make it fit more closely with my flavours of the week colors, pink and black. I also used a pink border to blend the image more seemlessly.

I'm currently working on a new intro for the pink and black theme since I still don't think this image suits it very well.

I haven't made any really good intro images in a while and this one is really no different, but meh. Here it is anyway:

It's very basic, just a re-touched image with my own logo on there. My logo normally has a circular stamp effect, but I've changed it in this case, to suit the theme.

A lot of these are cool, and some of them are grainy and bother me. But I see the effort, and they're teh awesome.

The one thing that irritates me to no end with intro images, though, is that people plaster up wallpaper-sized images, and it throws your browser way off.

Also...I don't do themes. When people do themes, they generally (generally!) have no clue what they're doing, and therefore, create a page where you need to highlight the text. I came to your site to READ, not to be blinded! That's what the sun is for! Sheesh. XD

White and blue..my eternal theme unless I think of something else. But I do have fun - I randomly change my youkai background theme. For me, if I can make somebody laugh or smile, then...I'm happy. ^_^

I had this one up for the longest time...I love the karaoke stint. And people kept wondering if I could sing or not. = =;;

My summer theme. It was hot during our summer, and I never had any money. And I really would be whining if I had to do that. XP

I had a couple others in-betwen the first and the second, but their currently not on this computer or the network at my house...which means they're downstairs. - -;;

And school started again. I should mention that the human girl looks waaaay too much like me. o_O;; So basically, this is kind of what would happen if my online personality and real-life personality collided:
One half would have fried chicken, the other would be coming home from school. And be hungry.

The current background. After months of searching and disappointing, I FINALLY found this image. I love it so much, it's the theme for my website's current layout. O_o;; It's an Azumanga band!
I think it comes from the fact that I've been doing a lot of band stuff lately...now that I'm in high school, we have all those pep rallies and stuff. Blegh. : P

They're not quite the whole "intro" image, but people see these while the myO is loading, so it kinda is my way of an introduction image. Weeeh...

I always hear comments about stuff being grainy or something like that, but to tell the truth to someone like me who has never had a graphics class quite often I'm not sure what you are referring too. Not to mention I don't know half of what my program can do. :animesigh

I agree about the wallpaper and bigger sized images. I find it rather irritating as well and I always resize everything I post within a certain limit. And I really hate the sites where you have to highlight everything just to read it! I don't know a lot of html but I did my best to make my Zelda theme readable. ^_~

Anyway, until this thread I never thought about an intro picture so here's my first attempt. If it looks funny or grainy perhaps you might have some suggestions on how I can fix that. ^_^ You will have to be specific though as I really don?t know how to do a lot with pictures.

Well, I've had many of images for MyO page--I like to change it around constantly. But my favorite is this one:

It came out better than I had planned, actually, lol. It really wasn't supposed to look like a mirror, but more of just...a picture framed. The white is supposed to be there, the whole page was white--so it looked like a picture floating. I am really proud of this one; it's probably the best of whatever graphics I've toyed with. I'm a huge fan of Kaori Yuki's art, and I try to make my tributes to her in any way I can. I've tried to do some drawings, I've tried to make banner/avi sets, and I do decorate most of MyO designs with my favorite characters from Angel Sanctuary--but this image just really hit the spot. Okay, I know that this thread hasn?t been posted in for several months, but for such a specific topic it seemed pointless to start another thread. Though If I need to start a new one just let me know.

Anyway, I was looking through this thread a while ago and it got me thinking that having an into picture on your myOtaku site was a very nice touch. ^_^ So when I changed my theme I made one to go with it this time.

So any thoughts or suggestions? Though since I'm self taught I may not understand what you're telling me. Hehe.

Oh and I was wondering who started the idea of making an intro image for your myOtaku site?
