Foreign Devils Volume 1:
The Land Of The Gods
EDITED2- Altron made a good point, I forgot to add details with all my marketing sentences. See below for added content.

The xenophobic lands of Asia have always held a special mystery for the men of the West. This has lead to everything from wars, to trade empires, to broken families and much, much more. The relationship between the people of East and West is careful at best and fascinating on many levels.

The islands of Japan are known by many names- The Land of Tears, the Land of the Rising Sun, the Land of the Gods? and all of these names are appropriate in turn. In 1603, when Ieyasu Tokugawa became Shogun, Supreme Military Ruler, of a United Japan, he shut the gates to all foreigners. Only in a strictly restricted district of Nagasaki was a heavily regulated amount of trade allowed, leaving much mystery in the minds of the Westerners that traded there.

Legends begin as whispers, run their course and go out like January embers. Stories-breathed in corners in Dover inns, and creeping from the mouths of barkeeps in New Port News- began circulating around the North Atlantic rim. Stories of men who could kill 100 riflemen with magic swords, of assassins that were swifter than the wind and more deadly than a bullet grosse point blank, and of fantastic ladies far beyond what they knew in the States and England swirled around in a maelstrom of fervor and anticipation.

With each passing year, the tales grew taller and taller- with each sailor, each adventurer, each captain holding his own dream of what lay beyond the rising sun. Visions of golden streets, breathtaking ladies, and azure seas danced in every head that gazed out to sea. Many attempted to reach these lands beyond the sun, but none returned.

Fear, as well as desire, conflicted within perspective adventurers until few dared discuss such a voyage, let alone set out on one. In the year 1837, only one American captain, James P. Horizon, secretly funded by the senator from Pennsylvania; John Wolfe, left the San Francisco bay in search of the lands of legend. He and a small, capable crew struck Westward with a vengeance, seeking to be rid of the constant dissention among local and national politicos.

The China Clipper, Raider, made good progress, and found the sea of Japan in the August of ?37. Anchored a mere 3 miles off of the coast of Kyushu, these brave men and women braced themselves for what they believed was going to be the adventure of a century.

Horizon and his crew seek an avenue of trade, and perhaps a new dominion for the United States. Opening Japan to the United States would generate vast amounts of wealth, and perhaps become a Pacific base against the looming terror of Russia.

On the other side of things, Tokugawa Tokano, the embattled Shogun of Japan watches the ominous white sails carefully. His rival, Ichiro Kozuma, continues to stir up the Daimyos against him. Calling for a council of Daimyos to oversee the Shogunate, Kozuma's real goal is the most obvious secret in Asia.

Unbeknownst to Tokano, his brother and hatamoto, Yoshi, has sold out to Kozuma for the promise of a seat on Kozuma's council. Tokano's bakufu crumbles beneath Yoshi's ever so subtle corruption.

With the mysterious Foreign Devils surely to land soon, and Kozuma's constant schemeing, Tokugamwa Tokano wonders what the gods have in store for his land of Nihon... and whether the Foreign Devils have come to bring war at last.

And so begins the first installment of Foreign Devils: Sailing Westward!

I am looking for 3 or more crew members (male or female), Tokugawa, and several Japanese of note (at least one woman). I will be James Horizon. Also, I need someone to be a rival for the Shogunate. The story centers around the growing movement for civil war in Japan, and the arrival of the Westerners. Anything goes, but keep it real! (Samurai are totally welcome)

(That would be Nihon--James Clavell, as much as I love the guy, made some weird mistakes in his day. O_o)

Name: Francoise Violette Deneuve

Age: 19

Sex: F

Personality: A observant young lady, tres introvertie, I am fluent in French and English, though I prefer to keep this information to myself, for the most part.
If I do feel the need to communicate, it is usually to do with important information, not merely for lack of anything better to do.
I never act without thinking and have a poor disposition towards impolite or roudy people, who often go hand-in-hand.

Biography: I was born in a French colony north of the United States as a fourth child and second daughter. My mother has been pushing me to move out of the house and marry, as she is afraid I will grow too old to attract any one's interest, and I have finally complied, if only halfway.
My older brother, Louis, has taught me to use a rifle effectively, and I am a fast runner and capable of holding my prominent own in a fight, but am still able to be ladylike and polite when the situation calls for it, due to my attending finishing school.
I learned English with great ease when I was fifteen or so, and hope to learn to speak Japanese, eventually, as well.
I heard of this voyage and was delighted to learn it was open to women, and so I stand here, on the deck of a ship, anchored off the coast of Japan.

Notes of Import: I can't skate and have a paranoia of horses, but can drink more than most grown men in one sitting. Go figure.

(Oh yeah, and "Gai-Jin" owns, though "Shogun" is better. : P)
