Road Rage

What is it with people? Why do poeple go so overboard that they'd actually physically attack someone else, over a parking spot?

This hasn't been sparked by any particular incident, it is just something I've been thinking about. So, what experiences have you had with road rage, if any, and what do you think about it?

The roads are civilian battlefields, people.

Once, at a red light, there was a guy who didn't try to gun it through the yellow light. And the man behind him was obviously in a hurry, because he started to get out of his car and walk towards the other guy's car. The guy who didn't run the light got out too, and they started yelling at each other, spouting profanity, and pushing each other. Luckily, a cop came by and broke things up. I think it would've escalated to something more if the cop didn't come in time.

You should see what happens when I drive the speed limit or, god forbid, two or three under.

I?ve had people blow past me, honking their horn and swearing. It?s pretty nasty out there sometimes.

Solution: Make everyone else use public transportation?

I heard some report about road rage, which suggested that people feel very shielded within their cars, so they are far more likely to be abusive to random strangers. Or something like that.

I have to admit, I find the whole thing kind pretty odd. Seriously, you're driving a car at high speed...getting angry and upset isn't going to help you. In fact, it'll probably make an accident more likely.

When I'm behind the wheel I try to stay calm and remember one thing -- it's better to get somewhere alive than to get unduly frustrated with the people around me. Others make mistakes, so I try to be courteous when I'm on the road (and it's always appreciated when others are courteous too).

Besides, it's not as if the extra half a second you save by cutting someone off in traffic is really going to help you get to your destination that much faster. I really don't know what people's logic is with that.

I mostly hate people who fight over a parking spot just because it's closer to the building, when one person could just GO to the back and pick one of the many open spaces.

It's like they're going to die if they get some excercise and WALK to the building. Woah! Walking! Never heard of that before...

I mean, I was at this opening of a Korean supermarket in the Atlanta area, and there were lots of spaces in the back, but NO, two people had to come out of their cars and argue over this dumb spot in the front, and made about three cars (my mom's included) sit there and wait for them to stop yelling at each other.

This other time, we were driving to my camp and there was traffic on the highway, and were at the place where two roads seperate (one being an exit and one being the continuation of the main highway), and it was pretty crowded and my mom was waiting in line, and this ridiculous girl driving some red sports car that was pretty wide think she can squeeze in before us. Jesus Christ! It's not like being in front of us will cut down our driving time or reduce the traffic magically. She kept on edging in and staring at us, as if expecting us to just open up and let her through. Finally my sister sort got really annoyed, rolled down her window and yelled at her to back off. Of course, I guess the girl had to salvage her 'pride' or something, and kept on edging in.

ehehe.. I know what you mean. However I'm still learning to drive so I've got these big yellow and black 'L' plates on my car and always stick to the speed limit (obviously). Supposedly the more experienced drivers are meant to be more lenient on learner drivers (obviously not). All throughout my driving lessons I'm being tail-gated, then the tail-gater gets tail-gated etc. etc. til there's about 6 cars behind me all tail-gating each other, at the speed limit for goodness sakes people!!

I'm trying to learn to drive and some people will take the chance and suddenly speed past me to over-take, which tends to give my poor little heart a fright making me want to swerve my car off the side of the road, run over a few pedestrians to avoid a collision with rudely over-taking car. Even worse when some of them beep : (

I do take public transport where possible, which isn't very. The public transport system has just been so poorly implemented in NZ it's so much simpler just to drive.

Just the other day when we were coming back from The Ski Chalet my mom had been waiting forever to get out of this side rode and on to the main road and she finally saw a nice opening and got on to the main road when this car in the other lane sees us so cuts over and gets in the way which by the way was really dangerous ?and then the car got back in the right lane. And another time last week when my dad and I were going to school we were on route 1 and there?s this ramp for people to get onto route one followed by one to get off. My dad got into the right lane so he could get on the ramp to get off and this lady getting on route 1 kept insisting on getting in front of us before letting us over to get off route 1. I?m just like what the heck? Do you really have to get in front of us when were just getting of this rode? I mean your only gonna be in front of us for a few seconds at max would it have killed you to let us just get over first? It?s just amazing how some people insist on getting in front of you when it?ll do nothing. Especially the first person who just sped up and got in front of us which was so dangerous. I can?t believe some people do that. And I agree it?s rather freaky when your going to speed limit so everyone gets annoyed with you and speeds by in front of you. There are tons more times that I can think of that are examples of aggressive driving? but *sighs*

I've not had any experiences with road rage, happily. Well...when I was learning to drive, I did have a couple people blow past me, angry that I was driving the speed limit.

Actually, come to think of it, my DE instructor constantly yelled at me for going too slowly. Among other things. Funny to think I'm still angry with him about that stuff.

Long before I learned how to drive, though, someone gave me this quaint saying. Which I've always actually kept in mind.

"Let him have his accident somewhere else."

Some people are going to crash. Your job is to make sure they don't involve you.

People who pass me going down the mountain. The mountain road is narrow and only two lanes wide and very twisty. For some reason people will pass me crossing over the double yellow line. I'm not suprised at the amount of traffic fatalities on the mountain road.

In my state's Driver's Education manual, it gives a couple examples of road rage. The first two are standard drivers yelling at each other, but the third is the story of how a driver pulled over... and shot the other guy with a crossbow. Yes, a crossbow.

It also gives the helpful advice: "When signaling to other drivers, use more than one finger."

Road rage...ah, how stupid it is, but how funny it can be. I'm not saying that I encourage it, but if you're hyper enough, it's like a circus on crack-minus the clowns.

My mom can be so bad at keeping herself in check with that kind of stuff. On the way to the airport before a vacation one day, this lady was tailgating us. She finally got a chance to go around us. She slowed down next to us to flip my mom off and then she sped off. My mom about lost it. She started chasing after the lady and I swear, if my sister hadn't yelled at her, she'd have rammed that lady off the road. The entire time she was chasing the lady, she was cursing up a storm.

This story raises a question about common sense though-If the lady wanted to get by us so badly, what was the point of slowing down just to make someone mad? People, I've learned through experience, are stupid. The masses are, anyway.

Call me bad, but I laughed when I read this story. Its hilarious but also reminds me of my mom and sister. I think what causes Road Rage is because there are stupid people driving out on the highways not knowing what they are doing and can cause accidents because of it. There was this one time where this one lady was tailgating my mom and kept honking her horn repeatedly trying to get by. My mom thought the lady was going to tell her she has a flat tire cause we heard a funny noise from the car awhile back so we let her in, turns out she was probably just late for work and drove on past us. Stupid really. She kept doing that to every freakin car that she drove up to and swerved between lanes, I can't stand people like that. It's just like everything comes down to her. Its stupid people on the road that causes Road Rage, why let them get away with it if you can tell them wrong?

The most interesting thing I recall my DE manual having was some elaborate rules about who owns roadkill.

For example, if you hit a deer, you are entitled to keep it. HOWEVER, if you leave (even with the intention of coming back to get it later), anyone who happens along may take it.

Isn't that fascinating? Or even....dare I suggest it... Interesting, most interesting?

My mom is a very careful driver and she makes sure to follow all the rules. I hate it when people are too impatient (even though mom's driving at the speed limit), and twist around us in odd and very dangerous ways and then flash us the finger as a parting gift. I feel like flashing it back, but my mom stops me, probably out of fear of being attacked by those jerks though, lol.

About a week ago, my mom was driving me home after my late night exam and this freak comes out of nowhere and almost hits us as he makes a very rapid U-turn, his tires screeching like mad, not to mention the fact that U-turns in my province are not allowed, at least on that type of road. He almost hit two kids walking on the sidewalk as well. I think he was mad at them for some reason, and was trying to scare them. They looked scared out of their minds, so I think he accomplished his mission. Then, he drove off and screeched around a corner. I was confused why he kept on driving in such a dangerous way, and even thought he might start "attacking" others. Luckiliy, when my mom and I got back to our complex, there was a police officer there, so we reported the incident.

I wasn't sure if that was a case of road rage, or just very inconsiderate and dangerous driving. Anyway, once my mother an I went to the mall and there were two guys fighting and swearign at ech other over a parking spot. I thought it was dispicable how the one who started the row had a daughter with him in his car. The poor girl looked really upset and embarrassed at her father's actions and foul language. I must commend him for setting such an excellent example for his child.:therock:

Nice advice, Helios.

I, being 13, can't drive. However, I do know many examples of me-first mentality, downright dumbness.

Onetime, coming back from the Chesapeake bay, we were bumper to bumper traffic, on an interstate that has having 4 of the eight total lanes repaved on one of the busiest days of the summer, and people are throwing their cars into spaces that are, like, half the length of the car. Traffic sucks. Especially when our car broke down, we came to a stop and had to push the car to a point where an entrance ramp comes in ( only abotu 100 feet). Traffic didn't change pace at all behind us.

You don't think that's a slightly lesser version of Road Rage? Wishing someone should die for pulling a wheelie is pretty harsh. But, yes, I agree, he's an idiot.

I, myself, probably have road rage. I almost got kicked out of Drivers Ed for "Exhibiting Signs of Road Rage". It's just something about you driving the speed limit, and people honking, passing you, flipping you off, that really pisses me off. I'm pretty quick to anger, a trait I blame on my father. But, c'mon, you see I'm a student driver in the car and they give you a worse time. And, being cut-off also tends to piss me off. Wait 'till the next exit and get on a turnaround, or just get in the lane you need earlier. Don't endanger my life to save yourself a couple of minutes.

So, yeah, I get pretty pissed sometimes, but I'm never the one doing the cutting-off, and I don't give a damn where I park. So, whatever.

I experienced some pretty nasty road rage. Well actualy it was with my dad. I wasn't driving yet then, but anyway. This guy was weaving in and out of the lanes on the highway you know typical jack*** driver just trying to get farther ahead of everyone, boosts their ego I guess. Well he had to get over and my dad wouldnt let him so the guy pulled a gun and pointed it at us. He had me duck my head and he pulled over to the sholder quick so that guy would go past and we'd be safe.

Guess what I'm trying to say is it's just crazy what people will do when they are angry especially on the road.

People do road rage for my reasons. I'll give three of them. 1) anger, I've seen people get so angry when someone takes there parking space that they get out of there car and start cussing at them. 2) Fun. This is one of the dumbest reason. Some people do it for fun, and they tryy to humilate the other person in front of everyone. and finall 3) Money. I've heard stories that some people presude other people just for their money. :(

Ah road rage, I live in a town where it is common to see the bumper sticker: "Keep honking, I'm reloading". The sad thing is that they probably really mean it!

One time I was driving down the interstate just a tad bit faster than I should have, about 5 miles over the speed limit, and I had a guy who thought I was going to slowly. At the time I was 16 years old in a small compact car and this guy is in a big truck with huge tires. Pretty much looked like a reject from a monster truck show. He is tailgating me and honking. Mind you, there are 3 other empty lanes he could have gone into.

I tried several times to move out of his way but couldn't see behind me to make a safe lane change since he was so close to me all I could see was the front of his truck. Eventually I gathered up the nerve to just change lanes, which he then changed right behind me.

After a while he got bored "playing" and gunned his engine and passed me. Of course he had to flip me off and turned around so laugh as he passed. At that moment I was filled with road rage. I wished he would loose control and crash that awful looking monster truck and die. If I had a missle launcher I would have blown him away! I did nothing to him to cause him to tailgate me. I wasn't driving slow, I didn't cut him off...nothing. I just happened to be the person he decided to mess with.

People need to calm down when driving. I know I did after that. I ended up stopping and gathering myself together after that. What a loon, he could have killed me or someone else if I had changed lanes into someone!

It's not just rage, it's stupidity. It rained here for 2 day putting a lot of low lying areas under water. People try to drive around the flash flood signs and cross the water. Dumb, stupid, that kinda s__t gets you dead. Several were rescued during this storm, more than a few were arrested like the 83 year old man in the chevy malibu who crashed the flood gate at indian avenue went through the water over the rocks and into the arms of the waiting police who were there investigating a fatal rollover accident at the same place. TYhen he starts yelling at the cops for making him late for an eye exam. go fig.

Well, I've been a victim of road rage and I've seen road rage happen...oh, ok, and I've handed out a few birdies that weren't on a golf course :o

The time I had a first hand experiance with road rage was when I went to go pick up a pizza at Dominos. There was this crazy woman careening through the parking lot in her stupid SUV and she was making a left hand turn and didn't bother to stop. She got in front of my car, stopped, and got out of her SUV. I rolled up my window because I just didn't want to deal with her. She yelled 'Hey, that was a stop sign' at me then got back into her vehicle. I didn't say anything to her, but I wanted to know why she didn't stop if there was a stop sign., I passed her later when I was turing right onto another street and she was still waiting in traffic. Hell of a lot of good speeding did her.

The first time I saw road rage was when my family and I were in my mom's old car on the George Washington Bridge getting into NYC. Some guy got out of his car and started yelling at the guy in the car behind us. My brother wanted to know if maybe the guy yelling had been sniffing paint thinner earlier.

My aunt Marty had a rather frightening experiance with a road rage guy. I don't know the whole story, but I guess the guy didn't like that she was driving the speed limit on a side street. So he pulled ahead of her and slammed on his breaks. Then when she was stopped he got out of his car and started pounding on her window and yelling at her.

My road rage usually happens when people decide to cut me off, run stop signs or just not know how to drive. I either swear at them or throw them a little birdie depending on my mood or the offense. I find yelling helps to release stress.

Interesting, most interesting.

Well since I can't drive my own experiences with road rage are limited to either being a passenger in a car, or being on my bicycle and being verbally abused by undesirable individuals. One particular incident that sticks out at my was the time I was going to town with my uncle Stephen earlier this year, actually it was pretty funny what happened. Basically Stephen pulled into a parking space ahead of some guy, now I'm around 6'1" and Stephen is 6'4" but because we were sitting in our seats the guy didn't know that. Anyway the guy gets out of his car and starts shouting about how Stephen cut him off, [blah, blah, blah, you know the story] so Stephen steps out of the car and they guy freezes. I mean he literally took one look at Stephen and just turned white, I was just sitting in the car in stitches laughing, not exactly a prime example of road rage but definitely unique.
