Oh I know couple.

My main BIG one:

1.Main guy falling in love with Main girl who he did not care for at first, being a total jack*** in the beginning, but mellowing out in the end.

Now the others:

2.Main Characters surviving seemingly impossible situations...only because if they died the story could not progress.

3.Main Characters having "Ah-Ha!" moments, where they are stumped one minute, but all of a sudden know the answer/solution to a problem for absolutely no explaination at all (Or a completely ridiculous explaination), because if they didn't, the story could not progress.

4.Main guys falling under the "Hero/Outlaw/Warrior/Bad***" catagory.

5.Main girls falling under the "Naive/Shy/I want to tell him I love him but can't" catagory.

Meh, just some observations...:D

I'd say either giant sweatdrops or announcing attacks before they happen woul be the most overused anime cliches. They've been done so much in anime some American shows can just throw in one of these cliches and suddenly the show can be marketted as "anime inspired" (personally the only "anime inspired" shows I feel truely capture the spirit of anime are Teen Titans, the Batman Beyond movie, MEGAS XLR, and Samurai Jack).

Oh yes.

Biggest cliche ever: two lovers get into a fight, and they somehow, despite the fact that it is completely and utterly unexplainable, run into each other (most likely in the rain) and there is a big dramatic scene and then they kiss and make up only to have the bad guy come and take the other away or something else involving seperating them.

Oh oh oh and: Having a big dramatic scene and suddenly it's decided that the other character's name needs to be moaned or whispered in very desperate manner every five seconds. "Oh Hinato!" "Oh Kira" "..hinato" "Kira!" "Hinato *sob*" "Kiraaa..."

Etc so forth and whatnot.

This is fun. I hope we can come up with more!

i hate the cliche of love conquering all...almost like what Sol-Blade said, only, their victory is attributed to their fated love...

i think that's another cliche i don't like. someone's fated to be the hero, so of course they have to be. someone's fated to pick up a certain sword, so of course they have to.

This is kind of minor, but "the plain-armor-clad guard who always mnages to help Hero/ine A and/or Hero/ine B all the damn time and always has the same, plain voice (i.e. S-cry-ed, .hack//SIGN.)

The "best friend/relative" of Hero A who always has huge muscles and a gravely voice (i.e. Cowboy Bebop, and DBZ, well, hell ALL of DBZ has huge muscles and a gravely voice) and the "best friend/relative" of Heroine A thats really jealous because Heroine A gets all the attention (D.N.Angel, Full Metal Panic).

guy meets girl, or vice versa, girl gets kidnapped, guy goes on a rampage looking for girl, alotta ppl die. then we got the sappy scene(who saw this coming? better yet, who DIDNT see this coming?)

in the gundam series, the main ships, say, the legged ship or whatever from gundam seed taking all the hits from all the attacks and barely gettin a scratch on it. some huge freakin battlecruiser comes in, takes a hit from a blaster rifle, and blows up. wheres the logic in this, can someone answer for me, and dont say better armor, because im sure a battlecrusier thingy would have much better armor.

Wow okay I have alot of them. Let me see...

1. Harem Anime. There is always a guy surrounded by about 8 girls, and they ALL have a crush on him. But its always the other main character girl that dates him at the end, and even after she does, they still all like him. Wierd and annoying isn't it? why isn't it ever a girl with 8 guys liking her? *cough* maybe cause theres mostly men making these animes? duh.

2. Whenever the main character falls in love with someone, and that person likes them back, they almost never tell eachother their feelings. It usually takes halfway into the anime or at the very end they become a couple. (wth is up with that!?)

3. If there is an agressive stereotype (like Kagome from Inu Yasha) they always have to punch someone when their mad, or scream in people's faces when they get angry. Nevermind that the person always forgives them or doesnt even get angry back when being punched (they also fly high up into the air or across the room hitting a wall). They are NEVER quiet, and are always in demand of attention. You have to admit this has truth to it.

Granted, it's only really in CLAMP anime/manga, but the Tokyo Tower is the clishe I notice most, moreso than any particular character trait or story arc.

I understand it's a huge landmark for the country and city where most of the events of every anime series ever set on modern-day Earth take place, but it tends to play an integral part in too much, I find. Magic Knight Rayearth, Rayearth OVA, X OVA, CardCaptor Sakura, Digimon (alright, it was more of a set-piece, but it was still there)... There must be more than that, though.

There seems to be a trait for a certain type of character to die fairly late on in anime series; generally they'll be benevolent friends of the hero or a contesting supporter, e.g:
Wizardmon (Digimon Season 1), Leomon (Digimon Tamers), Wolfwood (Trigun), Shin (Cowboy Bebop), Eagol (Magic Knight Rayearth), Tsukomo Shiratori (Nadesico), Souichi (RahXephon)...
. You know: they'll either sacrifice themselves for the heroes or will be killed needlessly in order for the heroes to seek final revenge on the bad guys. And they're usually characters who I really like, too. Maybe it's trying to tell me something...

Probably the thing I hate the most in any type of anime is when they use the same screen shot for a fight scene and loop it. Not only does that piss me off but it bores me to death. I mean if there going to make an anime and put a lot of hard work into it, why not just go that extra mile and change around the style a little bit.

Another thing i dislike is how the main character in any anime thats a kid and goes to school usually wears a different uniform from the rest of the students. We already know who they are just by being shown the most, but instead some creators persist on giving them a totally unique clothing style.

Last thing that i hate is how most of the pilots on mech. shows cry constantly whenever something tragic happens. Of course its during some war event usually with someone being killed, but come on they always seem to do it when they only know the person and for the other people the they kill they show little if any remorse for them. Well as for now thats about it.

Well as for now thats about it.
Any characters in anime tend to get far more emotional than in any other genre of series I've ever seen; even soaps. I don't mind it too much, actually- I often feel a great deal of empathy with the characters, and having them cry is, for me, a good way to bring emotion out in me. I don't get choked up at every instance of a tear, and having them bawl their eyes out at the slightest knock does get irritating after a while. But Sousuke of Full Metal Panic didn't cry once, as I recall.

Magic Knight Rayeath frustrated me when it seemed that all Umi, Hikaru and Fuu would do was reflect on situations and cry. Yes, it's taken from a soujo manga, but you need to keep a certain air of realism with the way characters express emotions.
