Why this got moved to this forum, no idea.
Besides Invader Zim, pretty much everything else he has out is a comic. Comics are pieces of literature. See the connection?

As for me, I cannot say I am particularly fond of his works. Johnny the Homicidal Maniac is by far the most repulsive comic I have ever taken the time to read, and he could have chosen a far better look for Johnny aside from those wacky clothes he wears. The Squee! comics are frightful for little children to even look at. My sister had nightmares from reading them, and we all know how much I love my sister. Happy Noodle Boy is by far the most pointless and stupifying thing I have seen in my life. Not only that, but he is so profane it makes me want to vomit. Wobbly Headed Bob is so annoying with all his whining and so-called "genious". Filler Bunny is just flat out pointless.

And on a final thought:

I would like everyone to note the SARCASM comment at the end of Piro's post.

...have you all carefully observed it? Good.

Although Jhonen Vasquez's works are definitely unique, hilarious, and morbidly delightful, I tend to prefer manga. The constant random and bizarre nature of his work is both hysterical and interesting but also quite tiring. I can only watch/read his work when I feel like actually paying attention, especially when reading JTHM. Sometimes it's nice to just curl up with a good, sensical manga and drift off.

But yes. Much love for JV and his work. Rock on, dude.

I don't think I've seen any Jhonen Vasquez-related posts here, so I was wondering...... What do you all think of him and his work?

Personally, I enjoy most of his work. I like his art style, kind of surreal-ish. It's definately his own. Invader Zim caught my interest, and now I've moved on to Johnny the Homicidal Maniac (JtHM). Now, I don't read JtHM because I enjoy gory death scenes (I almost wish he could do without them). I read it because I enjoy Jhonen's art style. :D What about you?

I love the art style, but I also like the... gore. Invader Zim is definitly what caught my eye too. I've tried to make a style of art based o his, but I never succeded in capturing what made hi drawings so good.

At first i was going to ask, "who the **** is Jhonen Vasquez?" Then i remembered Invader Zim and Johny. And i'd have to say, yeah i like his stuff. I think any decent anime out does his art but it's still quite cool and stylistic. Johny the homicidal maniac was really strange to me. A "goth" friend turned me onto it, i liked it but didn't care for it. And as for Invader Zim, it's one of my favorite shows on Nickelodeon, when i still watched Nickelodeon...

I will say i did like his style. It was dark and cool. The characters were all very colorful, and you could like or hate them very easily. I remember the kid's sister that played the video games...she was creepy. And Zim's little robot thing always made me laugh. That song he used to sing was especially funny.

A friend of mine introduced me to Johnny the Homicidal Maniac about a year ago. I have to tell you that at first the whole concept kind of freaked me out. The art was geometical and jagged, and the plot line was dark and cruel. I have many friends who think along the same lines as Johnny. People who think that Everyone sucks and should be punished for their stupidity, and for the fact that they're annoying without even knowing it (Heh... like the word Wacky, Right?) Then to turn around and confess that they're not happy. I'll admit this JTHM idea is VERY creative and could never be anything but. However in my opinion art like this just contributes to teenage or "Young Adult" Depression.

It saddens me to believe that people can be so angry and yet wish to be so happy at the same time. the only thing different about this graphic novel/comic book is that there's a comic twist to it all. Take away the fact that Johnny ties people up in order to see if his food is still good (o_O) and you're left with an angry young man who vents his frustration and self hatred on others by... killing them. Is this something we want to reinforce in today's youth?

Hey Kids! Do you hate yourself? Do you wish everyone would just die? Looking for someone to kill the people who annoy you? ACT NOW! Kill them yourself! :flaming:

Heh... No, not a good idea. I've always been a firm believer that if you're not happy, then make a conscious choice to try to be happy. Everyone's got a reason to be depressed, whether or not you act depressed is up to you. And as for the Art. It's unique... and it's different. Yes there is a story line, but subconiously its just placing more anger into the media then what they're already is... I'd say enough people in the world are angry enough... -_- wouldn't you? Sorry if I've pissed anyone off. I respect him as an artist, but this black comedy that he writes, is just a little too dark for me.

If it's a little too dark for you, then don't read it. Some people enjoy such dark humor. I will agree that it can be a little too much, especially for the younger kids. The message isn't great either. But most of the people that read the comic are mature enough to realize it's only a joke. It's like the parents blaming violence on video games. It just doesn't work. A couple of pshyco-idiots out there shouldn't represent the masses.

Deppression is a big issure, especialy with teens. Some kids have a lot more to be depressed about than others. I don't think they should try to be happy like you said, instead they should fix the problem. Being depressed is a good indicater that there is something wrong with your life, and that you need to fix it. Ignoring it won't make anything better. Now that might not have been what you were trying to say, but it's how i took it...

In my opinion, America's youth is hopelessly pathetic. And i say this knowing i'm among them. Our standards are so much lower than those of kids in other countries, and we're so spoiled and stupid. The "stupid" kids are going to take this comic literally, and that really is sad. I'm not saying everyone is like that, only the majority...
