Fall
Got any answers for this: My computer is just about ready for the dump.If I turn it off, and then try to turn in back on again, it won't.Once you press the power switch on, it just makes this weird "clrrrrrrrrrrr" sound from the back of the monitor. I have to leave it making that sound all day, then turn it off again for about an hour or two, that turn it on, and then only sometimes does it turn on.It really sucks. And my mouse doesn't work, which means I have to use the stupid keyboard numkeys to move the pointer. And the clock is stuffed on it.And the sound doesn't work properly, it has a crackle sound in the background. My modem is only a 56kb fax modem, which is for people who live on a farm, and it only goes up to about a max speed of about 2kb.Stupid computer! Any answers, any solutions, any ideas?

Gee-enki Dama
Well since what you posted there has no technical language (such as "clrrrrrrrrrrr") I cant tell you whats wrong, but by the sounds of it, a new PC wouldnt kill you(by the way it looks, the one you have might)

Pastbyer
Buy a new one. I'm on one of the University computers and the color display is wacko. I can't read the words in people's posts properly unless the background is white. (Which it is not).
Kottonknot
Lol, Dell. Anywho, check if that sound is coming from the tower...if it is, it's probably your fan. Oh yeah, it's time for a new one, man.

masterfork
Never trash an old computer =] If anything, just take out everything and store it. But before you go and get a new one, format! Why not, you know? Back up all your important crap (borrow an external hard drive, or if you have a cd burner...). Plus, it's just so much better. It gives you a fresh start - feels like a new computer in itself.. You'll notice a speed difference too, since you're "starting over" =].
velvet paws
if it's not ur fan (there by easy to replace/mend) then i suggest a new PC would be a good idea. It's 5 years old you say? Now that IS old for a PC unless you upgrade it every now and then. I say if you can't afford a new PC then back everything up and get a good friend (or do it yourself I guess) to reinstall everything from scratch..maybe replace a few aged componants (sp?) and see if it improves at all. coolkam007
eeewwww... ^_^ well what year is it?.. if its before 96 then you need to take it out where you keep the cows and shoot it with a boom stick, if its 97-98 .. it might be salvage able.. like.. if it has Anything you could use.. ^^ steal the ram out of it.. and remember.. the market on computers is always changing.. so you ALWAYS need a new computer :) so go ahead and get one... but if its better then mine i'll bite you.. and then probably swap you computers.. :)
