Brasil
Some Fantastic As some of you may already know, I recently got published in an online sf journal. I'm very, very happy about it, because it's really the first step into a much more...lucrative world. My professors have long since encouraged me to get my work published, whether it was an epic poem about Lego Kings and vile wizards, or a paper refuting John Milus' claim that he based Apocalyse Now on The Odyssey, or most recently, a research paper showing very real correlative links between The Matrix Trilogy and Herman Melville's Moby Dick, and I never thought it would happen this quickly. I mean, it's not even been four years, but I got published as an undergrad. I'm very happy. :D So, yes. I'm very excited. What do you all think? OMFG did I do a good job?!? lol How many of you hope to get published in the future, and what type of material?
Shinmaru
How many of you hope to get published in the future, and what type of material?
Nice job of tacking some discussion into your thread at the last moment. ;) I keed, I keed. Once again, good job, old chum. :) About getting published...don't know about that. I'd like to get a short story or two published somewhere, actually, that would be pretty fun. I'd like to write a cool essay like our good buddy Alex for publishing someday, too, but my essay writing skills need a bit of polishing, I'd say (as do my short story skills, but that's an ongoing process :p). Adahn
I suppose I'll eventually get published once I get into some real research. Right now, I'm just learning the basics :( . I fear I'll become the science guy who knows a lot of information and finds it all very interesting. Woe be to those polite enough to listen to me once I get rolling on such topics. Other than that, damn, Alex. That's one hell of an essay. I wouldn't be afraid to send that to every applicable publisher you can find (though you may have already done that). Have you tried to contact the Wachowski brothers? It may not be easy to get ahold of them directly, but spreading your work around as much as possible would increase the chances of it being brought to your attention. I hope good things happen to you because of it.
James
I think it's a good idea to try to send that piece to the Wachowskis. I'm sure they'd appreciate the work that went into it, particularly as it's a serious comparison piece. Perhaps you should send a copy to Silver Pictures or Warner Bros. (Silver Pictures being the more direct route). Anyway, I have been involved in freelance journalism since roughly 2001 or so. Actually, funnily enough, my very first writing work was right here at theOtaku.com! From there, I began writing for other web publications (such as N-Sider, Gamer's Pulse, PlanetGameCube and others -- some of whom, arguably including PGC, died a long time ago). And then by 2003 I was writing for print, primarily Nintendo Gamer Magazine, which is basically the Australian equivalent to Nintendo Power Magazine. The key difference is that NGM is unofficial, which affords it some further flexibility. NGM is (or was, until late 2004) available in Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. Unfortunately NGM was killed off -- it just couldn't compete against Hyper, which is distributed by the same publisher, oddly enough (the key difference being that it is multiplatform and is a very old brand here - it's been around since the 8-bit days). During 2003/4, I cut back most of my writing for other sites. I decided to focus specifically on N-Sider, which I regard as my other online home (other than theOtaku.com, that is). It's very special to me and I'm tremendously proud of that publication's achievements. At the same time, that commitment really paid off in other ways. For instance, N-Sider now publishes in partnership with IGN. So as a result, I've had my work featured on IGN.com and I've also had various behind the scenes involvement with some of the editors there. Interestingly enough, this all began with only two things established: a reasonably good grasp of English and a love of games. So this proves that anyone -- anyone -- can get into publishing if they really love a particular subject and if they have a reasonable grasp of the English language. I definitely encourage people to get involved in this type of activity, for various reasons. Apart from anything else, you'll have some great experiences. I've met a lot of interesting people within the industry I deal with, due to the various contributions I've made. Getting on the "inside" of something you love is always highly rewarding. In terms of the future, I don't think I would say that my professional life will center around publishing or writing. I consider this as more of a hobby/part-time job than a serious career, but having said that, I'm well aware that one day I could easily end up in this part of the business on a full-time basis. Still, it'd be nice to open some new doors in this arena. I'd like to have my work in more print publications (some locally, maybe some overseas). And I'd definitely like to feature more work at IGN and other locations on the web. So yeah. If anyone here has a question about that, or if you feel that you aren't good enough, try not to be discouraged. It all starts with submitting your stuff to smaller sites and building your way up. You will be amazed at where this sort of thing can take you.
Lady_Rin
There is a quote, "Publish or perish". At least you won't perish now. I am not a writer but Ranger is. He has written two books published locally and a series of phamplets that go with his trail safety and survival courses. He also sells them to the tourists as souvineers. Xander Harris
RPG.net currently publishes my column "The Deeper Well". It deals with storytelling techniques and their application to RPGs. Dragon Warrior
I'm currently working on my story Inkraven that I've been writing for about a year now. I'm planning on taking it down to a nearby publisher's and get myself going. But getting your book published is really hard at first, so no one should expect it right off. Unless its a really good book XD
Decadence
Well, first off I'd like to congradulate you on getting published. I'm trying to finish up this some what cynical look at human nature, but its more a look at human nature from some one whos seen the more viscious, "shark-like" side of it. (And if any one knows a place i could get it reviewed at, by some one who isnt a peer, because every one i've shown it to says its quite good, i'd truely like to know) But as i said before, congrats and good luck with any thing else you try and get published.
Epsilon
Congratulations, Siren. I remember my first publishing, ironically, it's what lead to my current job. A poem in the 'Young American's Literature Society,' national in the US for 2002. After that, I was allowed to interview larger more well known writers of China. In late 2003, I got my first series published. The series was only three books long, and took four years to finish but was well worth it. Early last year I was interviewed in a magazine and landed a job there. Someday though, I would really like to have my work published somewhere else. Or rather, a bit more in the US or Japan. Currently thinking of Puffin or AE Publishing. Good-luck to everyone who wants to get published.
Panda
Congrats and best wishes to all of you who have been or strive to be published! My writing "career" has been very limited. My first articles were printed in a veterinary medicine newsletter. It was a quarterly publication written for pet owners. I did this for 5 years and had lots of positive responses from pet owners who enjoyed my articles. I think people enjoyed my writing since the subject matter is one that I love- veterinary medicine. Concerning online publications I have done quite a bit of writing for theOtaku including work in the anime hubs, reviews and articles. A few of my interviews posted on theOtaku include an employee of Blizzard Entertainment, a professional comic book artist, the Art Director for Magic: The Gathering and the creator of a real-life mecha. They have all been great fun putting together. I have many more plans for interviews for theOtaku dealing with the anime and gaming industry. I have always felt that if you write about what you know and love that will show through in your work. No matter what, have fun with your writing. Ive been published a few times. once for an article on the spanish language in the Marietta journal, my only poem ever went to the AJC (atlanta journal constitution), and a short story i wrote was featured in the marietta post gazette. Mitch
Two of my poems have been published in poetry collections for http://www.poetry.com, and I've had excerpts of my poem "Cocoon Swoon," and had my poem "The Desolate Shatter and the Open Plain" published in my school's first publication of its lit mag, Anti. I was also on The Star, our school's newspaper, my junior year. Each issue I wrote a column in it, and I wrote a decent number of journalism stories, as well. I plan to write a novel before I die. Two if it comes to it. Three if it comes to it - whichever. Right now, in fact, I'm attempting to write a novel. It's abot 10,000 words at this point, and I've not written in it for a month or so, but my goal is to complete it before this year's end and the next year's beginning. I plan to get a book of poetry published, perhaps a book of short stories. I already have a big enough collection of poetry to fill a book (after I would sharpen the pieces up, that is), and I probably have about half of what I need for short stories to make a book out of. I'll also be getting a good number of my pieces published in this year's Anti, so much so that we've kiddingly called it "the Mitch mag." I still don't know exactly what specific part of the career I'm going to dwell in, but I know I'll be doing something with writing. I plan to major in something with writing, and minor in something in science.
