I believe that a pencil board is like a storyboard except its sketches about what is happening that have been done by the animators. You will get these with most anime on the disk (Character Sketches/ Story Boards/ scenery design), Just think of em as nice pictures.

Really? Is that what they are for? O_o

I always thought (READ: THOUGHT) they were something hard to put any piece of paper on so it's easier to write on. Supposedly, in Japan, there's a lot of people who have soft-bound stuff (or no-bound), so pencil boards come in handy as hard surfaces. It was only a matter of time that these hard surfaces would have some aesthetic value.

But I know as a matter of fact that they make great mouse pads... <_<

Pencil boards are thin pieces of laminated plastic about 7" x 10", that are used by Japanese students in their notebooks for several reasons. They give them a rigid writing surface and keep their pen or pencil from going through the paper to the next page. They are also great collector's items. You can find them with different anime characters or designs on them.

Hope that answers your question. Now I have a question to add to this thread so we can keep it open. Who here collects pencil boards and why did you start collecting them? What pencil boards do you have in your collection?

I don't consider myself an avid collector but I do have quite a few Saiyuki pencil boards. I love Minekura's character designs so I just like looking at them. I have a few Fuushigi Yuugi pencil boards too, I got them since I love the character design and enjoy looking at them. It's like having an art book but a bit more portable.

So, who collects pencil boards, why did you start and what is in your collection?

The only pencil boards I'm actively trying to collect are the miniature ones coming with Geneon's release of R.O.D the TV. These pencil boards replicate the artwork found on a set of postcards (or some other type of card) that came with the Japanese DVDs. Recently, I discovered that one of the R2 cards features a lavishly drawn and very revealing image of Junior, the most important male character in the show.

This kind of came as a huge shock to me, because anyone who's seen R.O.D or the television series knows that the fanservice contained therein is all about the jiggle (with a little bit of loli on the side). The very idea of an R.O.D-related item having vaguely shota-ish fanservice just boggled my mind, haha. But I'm definitely not complaining. Right now I'm fervently hoping that Geneon will include the Junior-kun picture on one of the remaining pencil boards. If not--well, I'll do everything within my power to get my hands on one of the original cards. :p

I don't own any full-sized pencil boards. My meagre collection consists entirely of DVD pack-ins, so they're all slightly smaller than a DVD case. They're fun to look at and display, but after a while I don't really know what I ought to do with them, haha. Mine mostly laze around and collect dust. >_>

I've a prime proposal for you, Dagger: Give them dust-collecting Saiyuki pencil boards to me!

Ehrm.
I didn't know what pencil boards exactly were 'til I read this thread (thanks!). I really thought they were just items meat to be displayed. Am dearly wishing that I had one right now; it sounds like a wonderful tool to have.

Love and Peace!

I love pencil boards so, so much~ XD I have tons of them (which is a bit scary, really ^^; ) I keep one in my notebook for Art History, which is tons helpful cause it keeps the pencil marks from getting all over the place.

I think the first pencil board I purchased was Gravitation related? (I've got like... 5 Gravitatin ones now O_o)

but, yeah, they're fun... I like to keep them in my notebooks, but I do have some that I like so much I actually won't use them ^^; I just stick them on my wall *laughs*
