eleanor
:3 I love this movie, too. I didn't really get it the first time I watched it, but I guess I figured most of it out after the second viewing. Some things in that movie just can't be explained... >_< I LOVED Jake Gyllenhaal because he seemed the absolute perfect actor for this role. His whole hunched-over-face-down-eyes-looking-up-at-you thing fits the character perfectly. I think I loved every inch of this movie...no wonder it was a cult classic. Although if I actually think about it, the film was a little redundant at times. Ah, well. I'm pretty excited about the Director's Cut coming out on DVD in February. GTK
Donnie Darko doesn't get nearly enough love... Randomly, I believe there's a Donnie Darko manga, but I don't know who it's by... (and I believe it's Japanese only T_T)
elfpirate
DDarko is one of my favorite movies...though I had a hard time with his (Jake's, of course) character because he's A LOT like my *sniffles sadly* ex-boyfriend used to be, and it made me want to bring my bf back... but he is gone forever from this existence... "Why are you wearing that stupid rabbit suit?" "Why are you wearing that stupid man suit?"
Guest IchiTheKiller
Wow, this is my actual first post on this forum and its about one of my favorite films. Dont feel bad man, no one relally understood this movie the first time they saw it. As a matter of fact my teacher told me to see it and he described it like this. "it has a giant evil bunny name frank" I looked at him in dismay, but he let me borrow the movie and holy shiat that is a good movie. And yea jake was perfect for the role. I love his sister too lol.....thats another story for another time
Gravy Train
Yeah, it got hardly any publicity when it first came out. I only saw it about a few months ago because Ebert was raving about the dvd special release or something. Best movie that I have ever seen. And Frank is the best **cough, avatar, cough***. Although, I think I appreciate it because I saw it on dvd. It didn't make much sense when I first saw it, but then I read "The Philosophy of Time Travel" in the dvd's special feature section, then watched the movie again and everything made sense. It also gave me an appreciation for how the creator placed all those scenes so that they built on each other, leading up to the ending. If you haven't read the philosophy of time travel in the dvd section or on the website, then you should do so. The movie becomes so much clearer and it gives you appreciation for the actual plot and how it is so original.
Semjaza
The only real way to fully understand the film is to listen to the commentary and watch the extras. They explain things the original cut of the film doesn't even attempt to. I think that's what I enjoyed about it so much, you have to unlock things yourself. There's a new cut of the film coming on DVD in February, I believe. It was in theaters as a "Director's Cut" this Summer, but I never wound up seeing it. Apparently the stuff that was put back in gives a full explanation to everything (and fills in Drew Barrymore's character, who I hated in the original cut). Sounds interesting, but I don't know that I'll use it to replace my original copy lol.
James
Donnie Darko is a lot like The Matrix in that respect, except that The Matrix presents most of what you need -- it's just not always easy to see, because there's so much of it. Come to think of it, the two movies also have some very similar themes. But yeah, Donnie Darko is one of my favourite films. Incredibly good story, some awesome metaphors and a pretty finely-tuned script. It's a movie that you can dig deeper and deeper into (although it isn't as deep as some films, it's certainly deeper and more thoughtful than many films out there). And of course, that's part of the appeal. Not to mention that Donnie Darko is a great "religious film", in terms of presenting God in a different way than traditional religion. So yeah. An absolutely great movie; the Director's Cut has been out here for a short while, so I'm wondering if I should pick that up or not. Maybe if I have some spare cash on me one day and I see it, it'll be an impulse buy. lol
