live action movies

Huh? As far as I know, the Eva movie is still in pre-production. The people/companies associated with it don't yet have the financial backing required to actually make the film. Until they do, it'll remain in limbo. However, that is hardly the death knell for all anime-based live-action series and films. For example, there's currently a live-action Saikano movie in development, and James Cameron is planning to make a live-action Battle Angel Alita film.

I hope that's a decent enough answer, heh. This isn't exactly my area of expertise. Normally I would close this thread, but with the upcoming Alita movie and such, I think it'll be fine so long as we open up the discussion a bit. Next time, please try to phrase your question a little more clearly. ^_~

I heard that a live-action version of "Akira" is in the works. But Tatsuo, and Kanada are going to be brothers, for some reason. And there are all these rumors going around about a live action DBZ movie. That I would like to see. :) But most live action movies based on animes aren't that good. Like the HBO production of "Fist Of The North Star", or "The Guyver". The only one I saw that I liked was "Mobile Suit Gundam: G-Savoir". But it could've been better. No one said "Gundam", or mentioned the one-year war, or anything that happened before. Oh, yeah there was a live-action "Dragonball" movie. I heard it was awful. I don't even want to see that movie, I'm a big DBZ fan.
I hope for better films.

That's been cancelled last I heard. Though yeah, I may have it watched it too if it were ever made. After seeing Matrix Revolutions, I believe they could have successfully recreated a lot of the things done in DBZ. I'm not sure about the characters though, because that's something I always have an issue with regarding live action versions of anything.

Though X-Men turned out well enough in both the special effects and character appearances departments. So there may have been hope for the characters in the Dragonball Z live action movie, too.
I don't think that a dbz movie could do the hair. It looks corny no matter what, and that would destroy the movie.
Well... They could probably found a way around that. Maybe they could just do a more modern, realistic look for DBZ, like the X-Men movie. You know, no ridiculously bright dogis or overly spiky hair (though I think a little spikiness would be fine).

Yeah, a more realistic look would be best suited at best. But still, they need the glowing and the bright yellow hair for going super saiyan, right? If not, fans would be dissipointed. I'd be dissipointed. Yes, there are no plans for a DBZ right now, but you never know. I just hope it dosn't take as long as it did with the Spider-Man or X-men movies. Hell, some people out there still want to see a live action "Star Blazers" movie. Well, come to think of it, that would be cool. As long as it stays true to the seiries, and Harlock gets a guest shot. But still, DBZ deverves a movie.

I will come out and say from various sources including Fox themselves. There is no DBZ live movie in the making. It was cancelled. For reason I myself do not know but I am glad it was due to the reasons of seeing the various forms of scripts of what they wanted it to be about. So in short sorry for disapointing those who were looking forward to it since I myself for only one reason to go see it was for only a good laugh.

I liked his early stuff, but "Titanic" made me want to go out an eat garbage. Sheeze, the obsession with that movie just wouldn't die! And the ******* STUPID SONG! MAKE..IT...STOP... MAKE IT STOP!!! All I can say about that movie is this:
The Boat sank. GET THE **** OVER IT!
Well, I a movie based on "Battle Angel" could be good. Just as long they get good actors, stay true to the manga, and a good script.

But still, a DBZ movie would be cool. I wonder who would direct. Not Joel Sholmocker, that's for sure. Can't forgive him for "Batman and Robin." How about an Asian action director? Like..I don't know, the guy who did "Versus", or "Battle Royale".

To make a good movie, you need a good budget, good cast, good director, producers who know what their doing, and of course a good script. If the writings good, it makes the movie look good.

Live action anime movie is the dream and nightmare of all anime fans. I wonder how Cameron's Alita will turn out. I am guessing very Terminator-esque but I will wait to see the final product before making any decisions. Hopefully he will do the series justice.

I think the discussion of live action anime series has been a long standing one. Go to any anime fan message board and you will find someone starting a thread about a live action version of their favorite anime and who the perfect cast would be. I know for ages people have been discussing the "dream cast" of a live action Macross. As for the Eva movie what I had heard about it, character name changes and stuff I am worried of what direction it will take. Eva fans, much like any group of hardcore fans, are going to be very difficult to please.

As for live action I know that Boogiepop Phantom is having a live action release. There was also talk of a live action version of Witch Hunter Robin that was/is suppose to be on the Sci-Fi Network.

ANd the fact that anyone with half a brain knew that the ship was going to sink before they even got to the previews. -_-

I think it might be kind of hard to please some hardcore fans of any anime with a live action movie. There's almost always going to be something people don't like. "Oh my gods! Did he just misspronounce that?! What was he THINKING?!" or "That's not how it happened ... That's NOT how it happened!!" I know. I did it with the Harry Potter movies ... ^_^;;

And some series are just not meant to be live action movies, but I think I'd go see the Witch Hunter Robin on if it ever happened.

But like in an article in a Beckett Anime magazine, they had some actors for live action movie ... and, let's just say they weren't the best. Orlando Bloom for Inuyasha? He's too pretty. Jake Gyllenhaal as Spike Speigal from Cowboy Bebop? No, no, no. Not Bubble Boy.

(If anyone would like to read the entire article about this, I typed it up and can PM it to anyone that wishes.)

Panda is right. It is a dream and a nightmare. Comic book fans feel the same way somtimes when their favorite comics become movies. Look at "Daredevil". It was awful. And it's a great comic. "Elektra". Awful. But most comic book movies have been great! I skipped "The Punisher" because I think he is a loon. "Hulk" was...good, but could be better.

Have you seen the HBO "Fist Of The North Star"? It was pretty violent, like the manga, but not up to par with the manga, or anime. Also, some Japanese horror flicks have been getting American remakes. Like "Dark Water" is going to get one. I hope they don't do an american version of "Battle Royale." They would butcher it. What made BR so good, but so shocking was that it had teens being played by teens. And not a twenty-four year old playing a fifteen year old boy. I will still hope for a DBZ movie.
Oh get this, I hear that a live action "Transformers" movie is in the works. Wow. Cool. :) I wonder who's going to be Optimus?

Come on, that movie had me on the edge of my seat. I kept thinking, "What is going to happen to that boat?" It really was the pinnacle of the theater.

It really was a good movie, actually. It show everything as it happened, and included a large assortment of actual people from the ship. Also, people that didn't know the story had a blast with it(both of them).

I agree with panda. Live action movies get fans excited at first, then you get a stream of doubts. Going from cartoon to live action is difficult, especially for japanese media. Anime and Manga tend to be harder because of big eyes, weird hair, etc.

Yeah, I love Inuyasha but I think a live action movie would suck, for many different reasons, No.1 being the dog ears.

This issue really gets to me...There should not be anime movies...unless they are animated. Just look at all of the awful video-game/movie translations. Or that horrible Garfield movie.

I suppose (in theory) a good NGA movie COULD be made....but its a million to one shot if you ask me.
I don't know if the DBZ movie is really going ot happen but heres a site that says it is in Pre-production...

If you have doubts read my post heh. I saw the news from Dragonball Z's offical website and the guy called fox and they said no such movie was licensed to be made. So in short I doubt it will ever be made and as a hardcore fan thank god it won't.
ILM ON DBZ LIVE ACTION MOVIE by Otherworld Steve

I decided to follow up a bit more regarding the rumored live action Dragon Ball/Z movie. One persistent rumor has been that "George Lucas' CGI company ILM has signed a contract to do the special effects."

Today I called Ellen Pasternack, Public Relations for ILM. I asked her if the rumor was true; if ILM was brought on board to provide the special effects for the Dragon Ball/Z live action movie. Ms. Pasternack's reply was that it had been mentioned, but ILM never officially signed off on anything and it never came to be. She also commented that, as far as she knows, the film is not being made.

So there you have it, folks. Another death nail in the DBZ live action movie coffin. That isn't to say that the film will never be made. There are other major studios besides FOX and other effects houses aside from ILM. Who knows ... maybe Wetta will snag this property to go along with the Evangelion live action movie. Only time will tell.

Edit: I just want to clarify that a.) FUNimation Productions has absolutely nothing to do with the concept/licensing for a Dragon Ball/Z live action movie. They hold the license for the anime/games/merchandise only, and b.) this website is NOT an official FUNimation website. It is just a promotional website for Kyle Hebert and goes beyond his association with FUNimation. I hope that clears some things up.

NO LIFE IN THE "DRAGONBALL" LIVE ACTION MOVIE? by Otherworld Steve

I literally JUST got off the phone with FOX Studios in Los Angeles, CA. I asked outright about the upcoming live action Dragon Ball/Z movie.

This is exactly what I was told by my contact:

"The Dragon Ball Z movie? We don't have that. I 've got a lot of calls about that so I called around [the studio]. We won't be making that [movie]."

So there you have it, folks. That is the OFFICIAL story from FOX. I know some of you may be disappointed, but I also think it's a blessing
Yeah...I can't really imagine them looking that cute on a real guy...

I'd like to see what they do with the WHR. I heard about this project last summer...but it looks like that was the last time anyone heard about it...
Sci Fi Channel production to air in 2004 or 2005

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Sci Fi channel announced several of their new shows for 2004 and 2005, confirming earlier suggestions that they were producing a live action TV-series based on With Hunter Robin. As was stated on Anime Nation in January, Roy Lee and Doug Davison, jointly reponsible for the American Ring remake, will executive produce the TV series. Anime Nation also stated that Joe Menosky, writer and producer for numerous Star Trek series, would write the series and also executive produce it, we don't yet have confirmation of this, nor do we know how many episodes the series will run or when it will air.
That's from Anime news network, last JUNE. Hm. Either this means they're busy, or it's currently back-burner.
But like in an article in a Beckett Anime magazine, they had some actors for live action movie ... and, let's just say they weren't the best. Orlando Bloom for Inuyasha?
Actually, Orli struck me as making a better Sesshoumaru, if he could keep his face and eyes entirely emotionless...and they'd have to get someone else to do the voice.

One anime/manga I would love to see is Fruits Basket. It would be interesting to see how they'd work that out, considering they wouldn't need that many special effects... Not to mention the actors would be really, really cute.

I think that i DBZ movie would be good but not a live action one, they should just stick to the animated one beacuse they do not wnat to disgrace the actors or the anime. Just look what happen when they brought out the salior moon one, :( that was a grim day for anime.

Anyway i think they should make an evagelion live action movie but have some people who actually look like the characters. You could have voice actors to do it like Brad somehting who does gohan and quatre voices he looks kinda like shinji.
