Do you act your age?

I was just curious- do you think that you "act your age"? If not, do you act older or younger than your years suggest you should? And, finally, if you are one of those who act older/younger- do you do it intentionally or are you, in your mind or spirit, actually the age that you act like?
(Keep in mind, I am basing these questions on the general social standards of age vs behavior.)

I think I act my age, maybe a little older. But this is an unfair comparison to things. Because a few years older than what I am now is still an immature senior in high school. I act my age as far as having fun and my social life goes, but when it comes to responsibility and time-management, I would consider myself to be around 25.

But who's to say most 25 year olds are effective time managers?

When I'm at work or at school, I pretty much act my age, for fear of failing or getting fired most likely. However, when I'm chilling with my friends, I would say I act younger (around 16 or 15 years old.) We have all been friends since we were 10 years old, and 10 years later we are still a very tight-knit group of neighborhood "kids". So, when we all get together (as we do very often), we still act and feel younger, playing Magic: The Gathering or playing videogames. Not to mention the same inside jokes that are still as funny as day one. (the only difference now is the beer, which can and does make us act even more immature. hehe)

Plus, my hobbies like anime, videogames, and punk rock music are for guys in their mid teens. (according to "accepted social standards" I mean)

I'm older than you and I not only would list those as my top three "likes", but I had no idea that punk music was for kids in their mid-teens... in fact, I know all too many punk rock artists of drinking age and higher... and their fans range from young teens to older adults in their late 40s.

Oh, I know. Most punk rock artists I listen to are over 30. (Bad Religion, etc.) I just mean according to what adults consider acceptable American social standards. I'm not saying thats how things are, especially here in the northeast.

I have the same situation as DarkOtakuBoy. I have friends that are way older from me (my best friend is 2 years older, and they range from 18-28 yeah yeah I know) and then I have friends from ages (13-16) that are mostly at school. When I'm at school I act younger, more how you say hyper? but at home I think I can act older. I don't think you have to be a teenager to like anime, thats just some silly stereotype. I've seen 30 year olds go shopping and pick up anime tapes in the store all the time, ecchi most likely *coughs* Just kidding. But seriously, anyone who tells you such a thing is stupid. Anime is for ALL ages. Not just for kids. I had to explain that to my sister, who was shocked to hear there was smoking in a "cartoon". But I guess you have to watch it to get it. Don't let it get to you.

That depends. I act my age when I have to, like at work. I don't act my age when I don't have to. That's too confusing. If I use my husband as an example; most of the time he does not act his age wherever he is; if you put him in his work uniform he acts responsibily yet still nowhere near his age. It is not a display of immatruity but a feeling for life. The same for myself. I think that is the reason I have problems with my peers as I would rather be a girl while most of them would rather be women. So I dress like a girl, pretty clothes, minimal makeup and I try to always be positive. The both of us always try to find something in life each day to stay that way. Phsychologists call it the inner child. Except we let them out to play.

I'd hope that wasting people's time with petty insults isn't a part of releasing your inner child.

I act about my age, I'd say (I'm nineteen). Most of the time I just like having fun, and not worrying about things. I'm only nineteen, I really have nothing to worry about at the moment, anyway. So, I just act the way that feels right at the moment. Most of the time I'm rather silly, except at school, where I'm a bit more serious. Because school is supposed to be serious, you know?

Yeah, I probably act a bit too seriously at school. If I saw myself at school, I'd probably snicker a bit to myself. Makes me wonder if other people do the same :p

Hell no! I'm 18, and I have yet to get a job or my driver's liscense. I am a bit overwhelmed by the new responsibilities I have. I still can't believe I'm an adult! I still act like a child and am quite dependant on my mother. In Canada, healthcare is generally free, but dental care and eye care is not free once you're 18. I'm like: "WHAT? WHAT DO YOU MEAN I HAVE TO PAY FOR MY CHECKUP?!" Lol, and so forth. I really need to learn more skills so I can actually be able to start a family and maintain a household later on. I really need to learn how to cook. Macaroni and cheese or canned soup just isn't gonna cut it. I'm and Arab, I need to learn how to cook all those weird spicy dishes my mom makes. How does she do it? She doesn't even use measuring cups or anything.

I do. With my social life.

At school. I know I need better time-management. In fact, I have no time-management skills. I know I could manage my time better if I wanted to, but I don't, and probably won't for a while to come. I could act more mature at school, but I don't really care.

At the moment my social life is more important than nearly everything else. I know it shouldn't be. But it is. And I'd have a very hard time changing the fact.

I'm 18 and that just about explains me in a nut-shell!:p My mama just recently told me that I would have to file my taxes this year, and me, being the nut that I am, looked at her and started laughing like it was a joke, while in fact, she was actually telling the truth. But as the years go by I now know that the transition from young to old is getting harder, and harder.

BTW- To answer the original question, I don't act my age. I figure, you gotta stay young some kinda way right?

In a way I act older and in a way I act younger, so no one, not even in person, can be certain of my age. Let me start of with my real age: I'm 18, about to be 19 (this Friday, in fact). I'd have to say as far as maturaty and intellect go, I act older, some where around 25-30. I can carry on an intelligent conversation with most adults at or above that age (and I can confuse most people my age).

But when it comes to just having fun or hanging out with my friends, I tend to act younger. I blame this on two things. One is the odd jobs I held during high school: babysitter, day camp councilor, etc. Because of this, I really enjoy working, and playing, with young kids, and thus, kind of act like one. The other reason is that I look young for my age: around 15 or 16. And I guess because most people who don't really know me think I'm this age, I sort of act that way on default, because that's what they expect of me.

I definitely act older for my age. I can't really help it though. I'm 15 years old and have been taking college classes since I was 12. I've also been home schooled for practically all my life. I hang out with a lot of people my age that go to high school, but sometimes it?s difficult because I just can?t get into some of the stuff they are into. Not that it?s anything bad. For instance, I haven?t dated yet. So I usually hang out with people who are older than me, because they are usually interested in the same topics I am. Though, I don?t think I can say that for anime. I may sound like a complete brain for some people, but I?m really just a normal kid. :genius: I just was willing to sacrifice four years (high school) of my teenage life to get a jump start in college since I?m planning to receive a doctorate specializing in historical archeology. Dang, I sound like a nerd again.......sorry. :(

I guess in some ways I act older and in other ways I act younger. I just turned 14, but when I'm with my friends or around the house I act alot younger like a little kid. But I won't act like that in public usually. I can be really serious and mature at times but I prefer acting like a crazy hyper little kid. It's fun being a kid.^^

It looks like someone's inner child needs a nap. If we were kids (or acting like kids) and we were on a playground and you stuck you r tongue out at me, I think I'd probably have to shove your face in the mud at the bottom of the slide. :D But that's just me and my inner child. My inner child has ADHD. Tee Hee.

Okay. Obviously I sometimes don't act my age (23, I'll be 24 on the 24th of July.) and instead insist on acting my shoe size (ranging from a 9-10 depending on the shoe brand in American womans)

When I need to, like going for a job, handling a crisis or talking to my daughter's many (Rochester General hardly ever gives me the same doctor twice) peditricians. I act my age...I even handle problems with my daughter better than my mom...and she's 51.

However, if I can and I need to I can act half my age or more. You haven't lived until you've not only had a pillow fight with your husband (or other signifigant other) but acted like you were a teenager. Or even better, ran around with your friend and her 9 year old neice on a playground. That is so much the $hizznit!

So I think that acting mature (even more mature than your age calls for) at times when necesary, but if you're around small children who want to play (like my almost 4 month old) or just in a playful mood. Then of course, play all you want.

How can you be serious at school. Am I right?

I act my age sometimes...when I'm asleep. When I'm actually conscious and not skating I'm a freakin 10 year old. Which isn't bad...considering i'm 12 :/

Yes, like Shin and CHW, I think there's a definite line between being in touch with your inner child and just acting like a damn fool. I mean, I consider myself in touch with my inner child, because I know how to have fun, and I'm pretty easy-going most of the time. I can relax and just kick-back every so often, veg for a day, and feel fine doing it. But to do it every single time that I can, with little to no regard for real life, and living in a fantasy land 24/7? No, thank you. That's not being in touch with the inner child--that's just acting irrationally, and living in a dangerous delusion.

In some ways, I view my game systems as a way to let my inner child goof off for a bit. I find the same kind of exhiliration playing KotOR II as I did when I first played NES on Xmas day, circa 1989...made the same face, too, heh.

I'm not sure if I "act my age" or not, though, even with the general sociological gradient scales. I suppose I act a few years older, based on what I see from most 21-year-olds. I hear of binge drinking, pot, "Oh, man, I got so ****** wasted this weekend," and...if that's more or less representational of what my age group is doing, as it appears the majority are into that type of stuff...then I'd say I do act a bit older than my age. I'm more an intellectual than an alcoholic.

hehe. I know, yeah. my friends ask me the same thing. But dude, seriously. I'm a different person at school. I mean, I'm in college, so my goofing days have passed when it comes to that kinda thing. I wish to the gods sometimes that I didnt have to be so serious and "older" in class, but since I'm on a biochemistry Ph.D program, its pretty much the one place I have to not only act my age, but be even more responsible than I normally ever am.

To be honest, I dont feel comfortable acting my age or acting older...but I love science, and i'm trying to put 110% into it. ^_^
