Weird Meditation Experience

Just wanted to share this and see if anyone has any similar experiences:

I was meditating last night before I went to sleep. Just laying in my bed relaxing my whole body.

Next thing I know i'm in a dream. I knew that i was dreaming too.
It was the weirdest feeling; i was awake and dreaming at the same time. I was seeing stuff in my dream, but I'd occasionally come out of it and see my room and my body at the same time my dream was taking place (don't know how to explain).

Never had that happen before. I haven't meditated in forever but it was a totally awesome experience. The dream was so real...

What you're talking about is lucid dreaming. Lucid dreaming is basically when you are aware of the fact that you're dreaming, and you realise you body is asleep. From there, a person can learn to control their dreams, apparently, which is what Phayt is talking about. ^_^

As for me, I've never had a lucid dream. However, I do often confuse being awake with dreaming. Once on retreat, I dreamt that two people were on a bed on the far side of the room, talking. When I woke up, I found out my roommate had actually had a guy in the room that night. I'd woken up and groggily taken note of it, then when I fell asleep again, I'd thought it was a dream, lol.

I meditate every night before I sleep and every day at lunch time (I know where to go when Im at school.) At lunch time i tend to meditate in a classroom... The teacher lets me meditate in there during the lunch break.

Anyways...

There are times while I am meditating where time around me seems to stop... Not literally of course but It just seems that way.

Anyways most of the time though I have something more like this:

My eyes are closed but I can see everything around me. I seem to hear my breathing differently than normal and I see things I normally wouldnt see... Probably my imagination but still... I sometimes dream but most of the time what I see is vast emptiness in my mind.... And in this emptyness... Is a small flickering flame as if a candle was lit... Without the candle.

I'm not much into Paranormal things, but to many this is called Astro Projecting . Astro projecting is supposedly when your soul comes out of your body and usually have a 'dream' or in a 'dream-like' state where your floating above your body. Another way is where you can fly supposedly to someone's house and see what they are actually doing. It supposedly happened to a friend of mine (yeah i know unbelievable right?) but this is suppose to be a spiritual way to communicate with what else, spirits. I was told a story once that its dangerous cause someone can take over your body, but I never truely believe in many spiritual things. Just thought you might find that interesting. As for the feeling of calmness, that can happen to anyone. I get that when I'm resting my eyes or spacing out.

I've had experiences like that many times.

Basically, sometimes when I meditate, my spirit transports to a different place, usually in outer space or some place on Earth that I have never visited before. And I feel like I'm actually there, and I forget all about the physical world I'm actually in... It's really neat, if you ask me.

In another experience, my spirit didn't travel anywhere, but I did hear angels singing. I just listened to the songs, not putting any conscious thought into the whole process. The result? A musical miracle. (I actually remember taking one of those tunes and turning it into an actual song...)

And, the last time I meditated, which was this Tuesday, I heard lots of people chanting, and I got a vision of this galaxy... then a planet where the civilians were all singing... I sang too, the same one they did, and danced around in the beautiful scenery that was on the planet... But it was magical, the best experience yet... I think they told me to come to their planet someday, even... And it was sad, because I saw my own spirit, like there were two separate spirits of mine, and she was singing too...

OK, obviously this is all too elusive, and I'm beginning to relive that experience... *sighs happily*

Voyeurism taken to a whole new level. ;)

I'm so glad I'm not the only one having these... odd experiences. Had this freaky episode once where, when I close my eyes, I'd find my sleeping friends talking. I swear I wasn't dreaming; the transition was just too fast!

Of course, I only realized the weirdness of it all when I finally came to my senses in the morning (dropped off to sleep while meditating).

Not that I'm an expert at Astro Projecting or anything, infact I was terrifyed of the idea before, but I've heard a similar story. If you read books on it (just pretend you believe in it to get this) your suppose to see black and then white fuzzy dots, then its like you go into light, and you get a warm and fuzzy feeling. Its almost like another "world" but dealing with lights and color effects. There are different "layers" in this world supposedly, and I hear its dangerous if you go too far into the "world" if you don't know how to stop. It's suppose to make you feel great and tempting though, the further in you go, the more things start to feel like images. But then there is one where you can actually fly to a location and see friends/family members like Freude said talking. An old friend of mine claims he did this and saw his friend pick up the phone and call him, and was woken up by the ring. But then again I don't think I believe his story anyways. Anyways back to this "world" it mostly happens when you meditate, or when your in mid-sleep, basically your spirit is asleep but your body is awake. You breathe differently too, like when your sleeping you appear dead-like. If you want to see how cooky people are into this stuff check out these sites : (astro-projecting is when you are moving somewhere or going to the "outerspace" place)

Lucid Dreaming (when you know you are dreaming)

Freaky and a bit crazy? True. But then again I refuse to believe in the stuff. Still some interesting topics.

Cognition that is basically the type of meditation used before you go into this state of mind.

There are many types of meditations.

2 main types:

1. Qi gong related. You quiet your mind. No thoughts, no emotions and no memories. And yes no dreamings or ideas at all.

You focus on heartbeats and your breathing. You focus on Dan Tian and Ren Du Er Mai. You sense your Qi upto Bai Hui and down to Hui Yin. You feel the air around your body. You focus or sense your Qi to your limbs and back.

In short, you focus on different parts of your body and just sense the air or wind around you. You place your mind into your body sensory function. No thoughts or no cognition.

2. Cognition. Your mind clear. Your body relaxed, You are ready to meditate about one question or a thought at a time. Again no dreamings or wandering thoughts.

Practice to have one point mind or single pointed mind.

What is wind? What is love? etc.

What is I?

Wind is something my body feels. How does it feel? How do I know wind? Do not say wind is a movement or a flow of air.

What is air? It is something I breathe in and yet I do not see.

Again do not say air is O2 + NO2.

What is a dream? What is a thought?

A thought is aroused or stirred by my emotions or an observation.

Do not say a thought is something I read or I heard somebody said so and so.

And yes, start to relearn your congition from your experiences and knowing. And not from reading, hearsay or schooling.

A dream is a collection of thoughts stirred up by emotions.

An emotion is a reaction to the outside world based upon your perceptions or previous experiences of the same things.

I'll have to send this thread to Lincoln if I get online with him tomorrow. I think he may have had an experiance like this before.

The closest I've had to a strange meditation is during ritual when I kept getting a large red dragon by a tree in my sacred space. I don't know what kind of tree it was. all I remember is that we were sending energy to soldiers looooong story. Yeah, ok, now I sound weird.

I had a semi out of body experiance about 12 years ago when my grandpa died. I fell asleep on the couch in the family room and kept hearing voices...turns out it was the relatives from my dad's side of the family. They had been in the dining room talking.

I really should meditate more but lately all I want to do is sleep...I should poke myself for that.

Ummm yeaaaaah, Im gonna get back to you on that. =^P

Anyway, back to the subject of meditation. I've had multiple things like this happen to me. Most of them using the Cognition method. Lucid dreamign is soo amazing. Controling your dreams....Soo cool.
I really want to learn how to meditate, can someone help me learn how? I know this is kinda stupid. :p
No problem. ;) It depends on what you want to meditate on. If you want to meditate on a commen subject it's sort of easy. What you do is try and erase all your other thoughts. Then pick your subject and focus on it completely. You can repeat things in your head to keep you focused on your subject. Such as, please let me do well on school, or something like that.

To me however meditation has a deaper meaning. Meditation to me is a silient pray to God. I don't know what your beliefs are, but I use this method all the time and it has helped me get through alot in my life. So if your interested in this aspect of meditation let me know.

And trust me your question isn't stupid at all. :)

I'm a little confused as to how you can erase your thoughts. I've meditated before but I've become more focused on trying to erase my thoughts than my actual focus. Sometimes I imagine my distractions as paper leaving my mind but I don't know if that's something that works or I'm just trying to focus on getting rid of my thoughts.

I know what you mean. It's very difficult sometimes especially if you have distractions. Hmm about the focusing of getting rid of thoughts, whenever my thoughts start to wonder I take a deep breath and try again. If i'm too restless, I stop and try again later when I'm more calm. I think the best time to meditate is right before bed and when you wake up in the morning, but that's just me. I also like to repeat things about what I'm meditaiting on, and that helps sometimes too, because your forced to focus on your subject.

Anyways, hope that helps. :)

When I meditate I have bursts of energy and I'll feal really happy. When I meditaite I try to focus only on God because thats what I believe in, but sometimes when I am really concentrating on something I can make it happen. There has been many a time when I didn't want to go to a class at the college, and I would just dwel on not wanting to go and then we would get a call saying that class has been cancled. Another incident is, one day I really didn't want to do my Spanish tapes, but my mom insisted so I got really annoyed. I couldn't stop thinking about how much I didn't want to do it. I kept on saying to myself that I didn't want to do this. Then all of the sudden the tape just stopped and it didn't work for awhile after that. When things like this happen I freak out. I know that I'm not supposed to use meditaition for that kind of stuff. So know I try not to meditate so much on those kinds of subjects and I just focus on God. It has given me alot more pleasent results.

At least twice a month, I do a very involved Invocation with Magick Circle and all. Not including the Sabbats....they are special nights in themselves. Now I'm kinda new at this, but once about 8 months ago I had the most awesome (and at the time scary experence.) I make it my ritual to deeply meditate after the rite and reflect on nature or my life, etc. But this one time, during meditation, I fell dead asleep. (as I often do, considering how relaxed you get in that state) Anyway, to make a long story short, I woke up sometime in the middle of the night and was utterly paralized. it was like my body was asleep but my mind was active. I was completly aware and wasnt dreaming, lucid or otherwise. I mean, I could read the poster on my wall, I could see the titles of my books. I was 100% aware. I started to feel this force, this being standing by my door. THAT, I didnt see except with my minds eye. I really just cant explain this, except in my mind I knew a red robed hooded figure was standing by my door gazing back at me. I could SEE it with my mind. I would have bet my entire livelyhood on that fact. Eventually I forced myself to a "regular" state and was able to move and the feeling of someone being there left.

Now, what was this? Who knows. Not being able to move after sleep is a slightly common thing called catatonics, when your mind wakes up before your body. And considering that I did an in depth ritual and then meditated, I could have self-induced hallucinated. (which would be awesome if i could do that whenever i wanted. hehe) Or, maybe I did reach another level of reality/astral projected. Or maybe my invocation worked well. I had strange experences since then while doing my pagan rites, but never anything that tangible. Maybe one day it will happen again. ^_^

Thanks for taking time to help me. I am a Christain and I would like to learn how to meditate to calm myself. I have TMJ ( It means I grind my teeth at night ) and I grind because of stress. I need to ease up on grinding ( I can't help it because I'm asleep ) or my doctors going to put me on meds to calm me down.

Well to calm down I always meditate on God. Before I got to bed at night I sit in my bed, keeping my back as strait as I can. I close my eyes and say a pray. I ask God to help me or people I know who are going through troubles in our lives and so on. Then once I have finished my prayer I keep my eyes closed and, I imagine myself surrounded by light, a light that will protect me from anything I fear, the light of God. Then I repeat something like Lord help me to get closer to you, and lord please help me to fight my fears. I have a huge problem with nightmares, but when I do this I usually get a good nights rest without being disturbed. Anyways, I also repeat God, God, God over and over in my head and it helps a lot to calm me down. Then once I become too distracted and I can't focus any more I say a closing pray and go to bed. The first time I did this I could only focus one minute and I didn't feel any results. I didn't give up though. I kept doing it every night and now I can focus completely for about 30 minutes, and I feel really great after doing it. I feel good after praying to God with my whole heart for a half an hour can you Imagine that I know of people who have done it for way over 16 hours. Now that's amazing. I don't think I will reach that point.

Anyways, I really hope this helps. Thanks for having this conversation with me, and I really enjoyed this topic. Let me know if you have any more questions. You could always pm me.

Um this poem is really long, but I thought I would share it with you. I didn't write it though.

GOD! GOD! GOD!
From the depths of slumber,
As I ascend the spiral stairway of wakefulness,
I whisper:
God! God! God!

Thou art the food, and when I break my fast
Of nightly separation from Thee,
I taste Thee, and mentally say:
God! God! God!

No matter where I go, the spotlight of my mind
Ever keeps turning on Thee,
And in the battle dim of activity my silent war-cry is ever:
God! God! God!

When boisterous storms of trials shriek
And worries howl at me,
I drown their noises, loudly chanting:
God! God! God!

When my mind weaves dreams
With threads of memories,
On that magic cloth I do emboss:
God! God! God!

Every night, in time of deepest sleep,
My peace dreams and calls: Joy! Joy! Joy!
And my joy comes from singing evermore:
God! God! God!

In waking, eating, working ,dreaming, sleeping,
Serving, meditating, chanting, divinely loving,
My soul constantly hums, unheard by any:
God! God! God!

- Paramahansa Yogananda

Hope you like it,
