Uncool Entertainment...

Come on, everyone has something uncool that they enjoy. What do you do to entertain yourself? My initial answer would be this: OB. But you're all here, so I guess uncool isn't a word suitable for this situation.

My second choice would be reading. After all, everyone knows people who read are losers.

Uncool entertainment...hmm that is a tough one. Seeing how everything I do is cool this is a difficult question to answer. Bah, who am I kidding. Most of the activites I consider entertainment I am sure someone would say is uncool. Posting on anime based message boards, watching anime, reading manga, crocheting...it could all be considered uncool. The thing that I think takes the crown for most uncool thing I do for entertainment is karaoke. I am not a singer but I love to sing. I love to sing cheesy 80's power ballads! Oh well, at least it's not something like watching paint dry.

Uh- you mean what do I do that other people would think was uncool... um... nearly everything I do.

Reading and writing...
drawing and painting....
Watching anime.
Message boards.
Playing the 'cello, viola, violin, and piano.
Singing opera, Irish folk, Scottish folk, and sea shanties

But the most socially uncool thing (for my age group) that I do is sew and make my own clothes. Well, okay- it's a toss-up between that and the opera singing...

I don't really think any of these things are uncool, but I know other people do.

Well, lets see. Aside from the obvious videogames, anime, and manga

I'm a Star Trek nut. For some reason that I cant fathom, Star Wars isnt considered uncool (where I live), but say that you like Star Trek and your automatically branded a "geek." I think its because of those con's where everyone is cosplaying as Spock or Worf. -_^

My gothic lifestyle. Lets face it, listening to metal, dressing in all black with silver jewlery, liking arcane art, and writing poems isnt what I would call "mass appeal." I get so sick of going to a club, and hearing some trendy pretty-boy say something like, "ewww.....your a GOTH?? Thats SOOOO 1996" jerk. lol.

I study a LOT. On my own time. Everything from Japanese to Quantum Physics. Sadly, I cant think of anything more unpopular in this day and age as voluntary learning.

Finally, my religion. Which I consider to be Dark Neo-Paganism. (and no, dark doesnt mean evil) But even still, I guess any Pagan/Wiccan religion isnt exactly "cool." Maybe I'll post more about this on the religion thread.

So yeah, I'm just one big plethora of geekness. ^_^

Come now, guys. Those things aren't uncool because this is OB. A lot of people here read, write, draw, and watch anime.

Although Panda's karaoke might be uncool to some, I err.. do it sometimes too. I watch dubbed Korean soap operas...the love story ones >.>;

I find the exagerrated nature of them to be amusing, haha. It's lots of fun to poke holes in their non-existant plots. ^_~

Apart from that barely shameful fact, I spend far too much time coding for someone my age, heh. Seriously, I have files for a project I am (was? not even I know XP) working on with almost a thousand lines of code.... It's insane, heh.

...

Oh God, I'm such a geek XD

Hehe, I'm guilty of the same exact thing. Theres a nightclub by my house that has a karaoke bar and the rest of the club calls us "Geek Cafe". I also love to sing 80's metal there, but what makes it even worse for me is, I am beyond horrible.

If Ozzy were dead, he would be spinning in his grave. =(

Uncool...let me think about that one for a bit.

Oh yeah, it'd probably be running my own UT2k4 clan in my spare time. We love the game, and we created our own community...but damned if we didn't spend every day there, talking about the last kill or flag capture someone had. lol

Ahahaha!! Look at all the geeks!! *points and laughs some more*

...

So, that was kinda unneccessary but where I'm from, or rather, the people that hang around me.. playing an instrument, especially the piano/violin is completely normal especially because a majority of my friends are Asian. Yes, that is a generalization but it's a very factual one. Anyway, playing the piano certainly isn't uncool.. I have serenaded a many cute guys with it very successfullly ^_~

One group of my friends think it's cool to be able to dance. The other group don't think it's cool, and think it's cooler to karaoke.

However the one thing that both groups seem to agree with and look at me funny for, is being entertained by pokemon. Yet they still like anime, just not pokemon.

Nah, nothing is really that uncool...

No I remember what my friends thought was uncool, not to mention I was so offended when one of them laughed!! I use to do Tai Chi. And that girl laughed at me -__-""

Aside from that I'm a totally cool person and no one will convince me otherwise ;_;

I think it's cool to be uncool so I think everything I do is cool, but the general public thinks it's uncool. Like let's see, watching anime, playing yu gi oh cards, collecting pokemon cards, and also the studying for fun. I like learnig stuff by myself and watching the history channel. So yeah, and there's probably plenty of other stuff too.

that and the opera singing...

What may I ask is un-cool about singing opera *starts singing Masquerade a few octaves too high*

Ehem anyways besides the drawing watching anime and all the other good stuff most people on this board would say?

Reading. I don?t exactly get what?s so un-cool about it but almost all of my friends are bookworms. So what? Reading improves your vocabulary and helps you with learning. One of my close friends (the one I don?t share much in common with) once said that we were all a bunch of bookworms and I?m just like ?and what?s wrong with that?? Wow I really can?t think of many. ?Cept that I?ll occasionally go play with the dress ups down stairs (fuuuuuuun!) oh and I thought of one more? I like to speak in Spanish a lot, which I?ve learned can sometimes be a bad thing. Like when we were changing for our dress rehearsal of Just So and one Spanish lady was down there and I said ?Lo Siento? and she started babbling away in too-fast-to-understand Spanish and I?m just standing there nodding. And then there?s the messed up Spanish we some times speak which you would speak like:

Hoe-la! Como eh-stas towe?

Yo eh-stuy be-ei-ien!

Yo lama ehs ____

Me gusto jue-gu a el futbol!

So yea that?s our messed up Spanish. Then there?s the whole thing that all my friends write down all our nicknames and inside jokes? and I had thought of one more? ah well I tend to randomly recite lines from past plays of mine and all of my friends now all sorts of random lines from books/movies we like. But that wasn?t what I was thinking of? meh I?ll post again latter if I remember.

Oh yes, I agree, people who read are such losers ^_~ Hehe, I'm a loser... I suppose to a lot of people my reading fantasy and sci-fi novels would be considered uncool. And, with the exception of the people on OB and my sister, the anime and manga thing is totally uncool. None of my friends are into it. In my opinion though, heh, I'm cooler because I like those things.

>.> <.< Okay, and so, my last uncool activity... listening (and singing along to) songs like Hey Mama and dancing around like an idiot. But, uncool things like that are just so much fun!
This may seem pretty stupid, but I really get entertained when I make my video game characters go around in circles. I just get really really happy when I do that. >_>
Hee...I do that too, lol. In RPGs, instead of running, I sometimes make my characters walk around normally in cities.

I sing and dance to Outkast's Hey Ya with my sisters. >.<

Oh, yeah... I learn things on my own, as well...I forgot that that was uncool... and my obsession with the first 3 Star Wars movies...

I know there are a lot more uncool things about me that I'm simpply forgetting are uncool...:smirk:

I was having some problems with this thread until I started considered the difference between cool and "cool." I think I've got the hang of it now (although some responses still baffle me.)

So I guess my concept of cool (or even "cool") is a little skewed. I live in a very geeky community, where debates about the finer points of calculus are not an uncommon occurrence. Even among my non-anime watching friends, anime is considered something that people watch. Kinda like Dungeons and Dragons--sure, it's nerdy, but no one is going to start calling the kettle black. Several girls in my dorm have taken up knitting (I've seen more home made scarves here than you would believe). We have tea parties on Sunday afternoons.

I really can't think of anything uncool. (Despite Azure's mockery of my anime-dubbing and theme music-singing prowess.) :p

Alright, tangent aside, here are some of my quirkier hobbies.

I collect small plastic figurines of cartoon characters. It's not exactly "entertainment," but it "entertains" me. They're mostly from 25¢ boxes at rummage sales...if I see one I particularly like, I'll grab it. I have Hermes (from Disney's Hercules), Djali (the goat from The Hunchback of Notre Dame), one of the lost boys from Peter Pan (I don't remember his name), Bartok (from Anastasia), Philoctetes (Hercules again), a stiff-looking Superman, some assorted yellow Pokémon characters (Pikachu, Pichu, Meowth, and Psyduck) a an old-fashioned looking soldier, and some pirate dude (possibly from the Sinbad movie, although I'm not rightly sure). They're fun, I've got them set up on the shelf above my desk right now.

I have an interested array of Magnetic Poetry up on one of the magnetic surfaces of my room. It's an assortment from several free sets that I've gotten at one time or another. One deals with cat food, one is about sex education, one is put out by the gay-straight alliance, and one deals with spring break themes. People come in my room and make some interesting messages with them.

I go on quests for free stuff. There are a couple tables in the student union that are usually set up by one student group or another. All the groups have handouts, and a few of them have really cool (i.e., not pamphlet) handouts. I've gotten lots of free stickers, several pins, a T-shirt,
flavored lubricant and condoms
, lots and lots of candy, a small plastic
fetus
, crackers and other snacks, a poster, coupons for free Chipotle and iTunes music, and a wealth of other things. Plus, you can find a lot of companies are willing to give you a free sample if you request one.

cordially,
Sara

Everyone knows that I am cool, and I think that one of the reasons I am so cool is because I am not afraid to admit to my slightly nerdy habits.

I read comic books. Some might say that I collect comic books, but I don?t really collect them. I buy them to read, I buy them to get lost in a bit of fantasy, and I buy them to admire the artwork. When I am done reading the comic I bag it and board it so it is in good condition for the next time I decide to read it.

I read; a lot. Now, I am not of the mindset that reading is nerdy and dorky, actually, I think you are weird if you don?t read. I am an excessive reader though, and I often breeze through a novel fairly quickly. Coupled with my odd fondness for various genres of writing I think that this could be classified as a nerdy habit.

People collect Pez for me. I have so many Pez candy dispensers it is ridiculous. What is even more ridiculous is the fact that I have never ever bought a Pez dispenser. I think that one day a group of people got together and decided that I should start a Pez collection. Anyway, I have a huge glass apothecary cabinet in my living room over flowing with Pez dispensers.

My favorite sport is professional wresting. Yeah, I realize it isn?t a sport, but I really enjoy watching it. And my viewing pleasure is not limited to WWE brand products. I also go out of my way to catch TNA shows and borrow the occasional ROH video. With this much drama who cares that it is fake?

So what if I have a closet filled with nothing but record albums, tapes, and CDs? I like my music. I do realize, however, that I obsessively purchase (and steal) music and that this habit definitely borders on nerdy-ness. But at least nerdy old me will always be able to match the perfect song to a moment of my life without ever repeating songs.

Coolness is in the eye of the beholder. When I'm in Heemstra (my dorm), there are 4 DnD players in the basement (where I live), and three of them (including myself)DM. I can hardly leave my door without hearing someone discussing Attacks of Opportunity or Dragons versus Giants or somesuch. So my RPG hobby is pretty cool around these parts. Other places, not so much.

Anime, again, depends on who you are with. One guy in the basement is like, the biggest Anime fan in the dorm, but there are other people down here who can't stand the stuff.

Sara, your dorm sounds cool... a lot like a female Heemstra... for curiosities sake, where do you go to college at?

Anyhow, conventional idea of 'cool' and 'uncool' seem to be very high school. In college, people don't tend to talk about each other in such terminology.

Heaven's Cloud, you collect comic books to read? Cool! I myself always buy comics for the story and artwork, not because of potential resale value. But this illustrates my point. To me, you have gone way up in the cool-o-meter because of that. But most people I know don't read comics, and wouldn't find that cool. The eye of the beholder, I'm tellin' ya'll.

This sketch is getting long, and I have a test to cram for, so

Hasta Luego,

James Bierly

I MUST be a loser, I can type faster than 10 words per minute!

Anyway, wher I live, people who watch anime and play video games are ridiculed and exiled to live a life of hellish torment. And no one seems to be impressed that I write game reviews for gamefaqs.com or that Im working on a novel. And not many people cared that I won my class spelling bee. One word decribes me geek.

And the fact that I have really long hair doesnt help much.

Yeah, that does sound like a fun place to live. Do you attend the U of M, but just not the IT?

In my experience, though, homework parties rarely lead to actual studying, but do help the economy immensely in regards to junk food consumed ;)

Yeah, I go to UMN, but I'm a CLA (college of liberal arts) student. The girls in my wing are mostly CLA, I think.

Anyway, hm. Probably the most uncool thing I do is work at my dorm's cafeteria. People (when they find out I work there) constantly ask me why. I guess that makes sense, I mean...let's face it. When you're forced to eat somewhere all the time, you're going to have some problems with it, heh.

On the other hand, I like most of the people I work with, it's close (I don't even have to go outside to get to work), it's very flexible, it pays better than several other jobs that I might have taken, and I get free food when I work.

Other than that...I have a Mac, heh. I can't even begin to describe all the teasing I get for that. Comes of being friends with so many Computer Science majors, probably. :)

sleek and sexy,

When I saw the topic I thought is was about tourturing people and making others watch it as entertainment.

Well, I'm so cool that everything I do is suddenly cool. However if I really have to make a list I'll do it:

Watch TV court shows Not Court TV , but those court shows on TV, The People's Court, Judge Mathis, Judge Judy, Divorce Court, Texas Justice. ect ect ect. I love to watch them.

Jerry Springer Heck any show that can make my mother-in-law seem close to normal is worth watching.

Singing and adding on verses to children's songs I have a daughter so I have to sing the children's songs, but well... I sing them with my 14 year old cousin, her friends and my friends. For example, my cousin added a verse about a bomb being in the bird in the Green grass song. Then we just got really silly and everything we talked about got filtered into that song for example: There was a toilet in the middle of the bathroom the prettiest toilet that you ever did see. Well, the toilet's in the bathroom and the bathroom is in the bedroom and the bedroom is in the apartment and the a-partment is on the ground. and the green grass grows all around all around and the green grass grows all around. We did that yesturday and it annoyed the crap out of her mom.

CNN, the History CHannel, the Weather Channel, ect ect ect. No real reason except that some of them are the only ones on when I have to wake up with abby.

I'll do more later, but I have more to do.
