Since there are so many different animes out there, and people always ask 'which anime is your favourite?', I thought it would be different to ask this question. It would be interesting to see which people like what?

Personally, I 'm a big fan of 'chick-kick-butt' animes such as NOIR, Geneshaft and Kiddy Grade.

But I also like ones that have a different edge to them such as Wolf's Rain (from a wolf's perspective) and the .hack series.

Magic and fantasy are also high on my list (Witch Hunter Robin) but action and a good story is what I really love. If it doesn't have a good story, I'm not interested in it.

I applaude fantasy like Ragnarok and .hack and creativity like King of Bandits Jing. If a show has a good, lighthearted story with some cool action scenes Ill watch it. The thing I like most in anime is, of course, the battling, but if the story is good enough like it is in the .hack series, it must be worth a good watch.

Wait... are you asking people what type of plot they prefer, or which genres they prefer? I'm not saying I want to edit the title of your thread or anything, but my response could venture in several different directions, and I'd like that to hinge on what you originally had in mind when phrasing the question. :)

I really dont have any single genre or 'storyline style' that i would call my favorite. I like various series' from almost every genre and there are also series' from each genre that i don't like. For instance there are some of Sci-fi animes that i really enjoy, like Neon Genesis, FLCL, Last Exile, Cowboy Bebop. But there are others in the same catagory that i really didn't like, Most of the Gundam series' didn't appeal to me, and i heard a lot of good things about Kiddy Grade but i couldnt even finish the first episode. same thing with the .hack series.

But if i had to pick a single genre, i guess i would go more with the romance/comedy genre. Maybe I'm just a softy, but i like animes with lighthearted themes and good laughs. everything from Azumanga Daioh & Mahoromatic to Chobits & Ai Yori Aoshi.

Hey guys, I'm baaak! :) Time to get postin' again. eh sorrie... <_< ........ >_>

Honestly I love plot lines with cute guys and drama. Like Fruits Basket and Boys over Flowers. Kare Kano and Chobits being my favroite anime;s you can guess my style. Oddly enough though DNAngel and others like Record of Lodoss War, are attractive.

The Shojo type anime (girls and boys ect.) Usually delves in one or both parties involved getting messed over in some way and I think its so cute/funny, how the main char;s try to get back up and end up further down then when they started, as in boys over flowes.

The Battle type scene, like Rolw and Bezerk, ect, is good in its own bloody gory I wanna see who dies next kinda way, ya know?

The pointless why does this exist kinda anime, like Quest for the stars, and Hyper Dolls, is funny because most epsiodes don't follow one another, like a dumb sitcom, but funny, none the less. (why else did people like friends so much??)

Then you have the Spacey future save the woman you love and the galaxy at the same time, type anime, like Tenchi and Maps. Outlaw Star too kinda, but thats a mesh, hot guy, and cash, what more can you want??

Anyhow I think you get the Idear of what I like... not like.. you know, anyone cares or anything.. .... .......... .. .

TRAGEDY and COMEDY , tragic at times and comedic at times, that is the anime I look for, I mostly prefer those with blood, lots of blood, yummm~~

Some of the anime I watch are Shonen-ai, and I have learnt to accept that, but not shonen-ai to the extent where the men kiss and sleep together, that is too much for me(maybe some yoai hints in every episode^_~)I also want anime that is realistic, not too much fantasy because I'd rather use that watse of space I call a mind to create my own fantasyland where bishies roam forever and ever and ever
I want many episodes so I can just keep watching without fear that it will end soon and I want very sad moments that make you cry and have sad piano background music

My ideal anime is already Saiyuki, because it has all the things I have just mentioned(except the many episodes part, damn, Gensomaden Saiyuki has only 50 episodes!!!That's too little, I WANT MORE!!!)

Heh. I can be a flair for the dramatic, I'm a bit of a romantic, too. Naturally, I enjoy a story with some sort of romance intwined. I also love sick/wierd/un-called-for humor... Heh... And a little blood doesn't hurt, either ^_~

Y'know, most series have some of all that (To some degree, anyway) But whatever.

I also like series with lotsa fighting (The best series I can think of is Dragon Ball and DBZ... I hate GT...) and stuff... Naruto, too.

And I like mysteries! I LOVE Kindaichi!!! It's great to sit down with a good mystery book/comic and be able to solve it about half-way through. Total bliss. Just like watching CSI...

Well, there's my input. Later!
I think I'm trying to say 'What type of plot do you prefer?" Sorry about all of this.[/FONT']
Cool, thanks for the clarification. ^_^

I really like "boy-meets-mecha" anime of the RahXephon and Soukyuu no Fafner variety. There are quite a few anime (Evangelion successors, one might call them) that follow the same general storyline arc as those series--mysterious creatures/aliens attack, our protagonist is forced to pilot a mech with strange ties to the aforementioned aliens, complications and conspiracies ensue, etc., etc.

For some reason, nearly all of the series of this type that I've seen have exceptionally good character development, and I suppose that's among the main reasons I enjoy them. The best ones manage to make something new, fresh and exciting out of the same basic formula/plot, which is pretty cool.

I'm also drawn to anime that involve a lot of travelling, such as Kino's Journey and Melody of Oblivion. It's nice to watch the same core cast visit various towns, countries and so forth, especially when each new place has its own unique story or "hook." Melody of Oblivion isn't wholly episodic, but its travelling format allows for it to cover several fantastic mini-arcs, each centering around a different location.

Oh, this is tough. As with most of my preferences, it really depends on what mood I'm in. I tend to look for substance over appearance. (Thats not to say I'm against bishies for some nice eye-candy) ^_^
The one thing I usually look for in anime plots are philosophical/sociological subtext, which .hack//SIGN and Evangelion does beautifully as well as (to a lesser extent) Wolf's Rain. You know, anime that actually says something behind all the entertainment. A lot of times I also look for fantasy-comedic elements like in InuYasha and Ranma 1/2. Finally, when I'm feeling romantic, I like watching dramatic love stories (Gravitation and whatnot)

The reason I love Fruits Basket so much is because it has EVERYTHING that I look for in anime. philosophical meanings (yes, they are there. lol), fantasy, comedy, and drama. As well as some hot bishonen dudes. (which of course is just a bonus) ^_~

plot lines...

well you just can't beat an anime that has no plot! (referring to excel saga)

serously though. i don't know which plot lines i prefer (because all anime i can get my hands on has the same, tired old repeating plot!!) damn that sucks

I'll watch anything that I don't think sucks. Any plotline could lead to either disaster or brilliance. It is all in the directing, storyboarding, scripting, design, animation, music, characterization, development, and that stuff that counts in presenting an idea well.

EVA is a mecha show that doesn't suck. SD Gundam is a mecha show that sucks.

Utena is a magical girl show that doesn't suck. Wedding Peach is a magical girl show that sucks.

FLCL is a wacky show that doesn't suck. Milk-Chan is a wacky show that sucks.

You can countinue with any genre or archtype you wish, and you'll find both sucking and non-sucking examples.

there's a variety of story lines that i like, acutally - all of which are quite different from one another. mostly, though, i'm drawn in by an or a somewhat angst plot or something that appeals to an 'ideal' but also impossible world. i like stories that explores different ideologies about humanity. this would mean, that i like stories like the gundam series especially (except sd), wolf's rain, ghost in a shell, and other such stories. i like these type of plots because they appear somewhat more realistic. it also makes you think. anime's that have a straight forward plot doesn't interest me - what's the point when you can easily guess what's going to happen next anyway?

I try not to limit to certain kind of plotline and genre. I watch everything from Excel Saga to Legend of Galatic Hero. When there is a well-written plot and some interesting characters, I can enjoy it. I start as a sci-fi/mecha fan and I am glad I try different genre. If not, I don't think I would get to know great stories such as 12 Kingdoms and Monster.

For me, the best sort of storyline would have a shounen basis (perhaps the impending demise of Earth, to be averted only by a band of improbably attractive and skilled orphans), incorporate some science fiction (the attractive orphans have giant robots) and some intellectually stimulating themes (pacifism, unity, morality) and quite a good deal of action for those moments when my mind begins to wander (giant robot brawl!). The science fiction is really optional, though, and intellectual stinulation is often readily replaced with comedy and innuendo (male martial artist falls into spring, turns into girl...).
Originality is important too.

I hope some studio sees this and decides to produce it because my ideal anime would sort of go like this...

1) Time travel/ Split dimensions
2) Post apocalyptic
3) LOTS and LOTS :animesigh of BISHONENS :animesmil wearing LOTS and LOTS of leather and with LOTS and LOTS of beautiful golden/black/purple long hair :animeswea
4) ... one sensible heroine who doesn't have a high pitched squealy voice and never wears a school uniform. Must be able to handle weapons and have psychokinetic powers.
5) ...one absolutely delicious YAOI couple, angsty, hopelessly devoted to each other, saving each other's lives all the time. :animestun
6) Plot? erm...all right, i haven't even got that far yet but i suppose some save the world from evil (but glompable) baddie stuff and falling in love and happy ending (I'm a BIG one on happy endings) :catgirl: Which makes you wonder why i watch so much anime because 9 times out of 10, the endings are all so darn SAD!!! :animecry:

I can pretty much go for anything with a good story but i do like some action thrown in there. Anything that has deep controversial conflicts or just a generally deep core storyline. Some comic relief is good but i can't say i'm much of a fan of the type that are pretty much one big joke that get a little too wacky for my taste.

I love a storyline when the protagonist questions his or her existance. these make me really love anime much much more. Evangelion having a plot like this is what makes it my favorate. all the eva pilots in the anime have this going. the character development is very complex and i love it.
Otherwise i like stuff like love hina that is good and fruits basket I like those too but just not as much as the psycological drama type stuff
