Well I know that I for one have been introduced to many great bands by friends/relatives of mine. Almost 50% of that was from my friend Mike. Great musical taste he has. So my question to you is...

What bands have you been introduced to by friends of yours?

Some of mine are:
Atretu
Lost Prophets
Linkin Park
Shadows Fall
Underoath
Anberlin

Among others. So what about you?

Indeed I have. Most of the time, I'm the one doing the introducing. But in my line of business, me and my friends meet quite a few big names :D

I've met:
-Sum 41-These guys were pretty cool, extremely laid back and have a weird sense of humor.
-Lostphophets-These guys were also pretty cool, I got to check out their tour bus which was awesome. I lost track of the amount of videogames they have on board.
-Freezepop-Oh my god, these guys RULE! Liz Enthusiam is just, so f'ing happy all the time! It was great, I loved hanging out with Freezepop. I'd recommend buying their albums, and no that's not a shameless plug.
-Blink 182-They were ok, but their drummer (I don't know his name) was a total ***.
-DieselBoy-Now we're talking, someone I can relate to. Me and him got along well, and he taught me some pretty cool techniques.

As far as I can remember I don't recall ever getting any referred bands from a friend, I have though asked random people, though usually in the end I end up having to look up new stuff on my own. So in essence it's always been me doing the referring. I guess I just have a very decent taste in music, though I'm still trying to expand it. But the main type of music I like isn?t the type of music most people listen to so it?s hard to find people sometimes to ask in the first place let alone friends. I make due though.

Pretty much most of my fave bands have been introduced to me by friends. In fact of my top five, four are referals, lol. I remember my friend Brenton got me into KoRn about two years ago, when we were playing TH4. He put it on whilst we played, lol, and he lent me Follow the Leader, and I'm completely infatuated with them now. KoRn is my god, lol.

Brenton also introduced me to Frenzal Rhomb, Hilltop Hoods, The Herd, Rage Against the Machine, Outkast, System of a Down and Frank Zappa. He's a cool guy, but he's a bit of a pompous arsehole when it comes to music, lol. He's never let me forget he introduced me to those bands. -.-

Mitch initially introduced me to Marilyn Manson, and on his teaser (he only sent me Coma White), I asked Semjaza Azazel for some recommendations, and I've bought three of his albums since. They have a sound that I really enjoy, and I treat it like an alternative to KoRn for when it gets too heavy, for even me, heh.

Semjaza also introduced me to Bad Religion via his radio.blog. He has awesome taste in the music thing, he does. lol

The lovely Aleia introduced me to Jack Off Jill a couple of months back when she sent me a couple of mp3s off the album 'Clear Hearts Grey Flowers', then sent me the CD for Christmas. XD I love Jessicka's voice, and know that I'm not the only one infatuated with it *coughShinmarucough*

Juuthena has got me interested in Kitty and Muse but I'm yet to act on them and buy any albums yet, heh. I'm waiting for birthday money. ^_^; Also, my Mum got me into The Doors when I was younger, and Pearl Jam more recently, but I haven't had the initiative to buy any of their albums yet either.

And yeah. lol. I'm probably missing a lot, but I think this post is jam packed as it is. XD

My close friend Ross also introduced me to the band HIM. I've been hooked ever since, but sadly, have only one of their albums, Razorblade Romance.

Oh, and Sol-Blade, I didn't actually mean a literal introduction to the band members themselves, but mainly the music. But now I envy you...you met Lostprophets...oh, the envy is great.

I think basically all of the bands that I listen to currently have been introduced by friends. One in particular, my friend Nate, who has a very deep appreciation for rock music and music in general, has contributed to around 90% of what I listen to. He's very passionate about music, heh; when he hates something, he loathes it, and when he loves something, he can't stop talking about how talented the guitarists, bassists, drummers, or whatever, are. It's something that I think he's been surrounded by his whole life, and he occasionally plays bass, so I trust that he knows what he's talking about. It's funny, just sitting around in class or wherever not really doing anything, he'll randomly break into a song or a beat; I think that he constantly has a song playing in his head at all times. :p Nearly everything he's shown me has been excellent, too, but often times I'm troubled by whether or not this is because I respect his decision a little too much, or if it really is very good and he knows what he's talking about. In any case, he's introduced me to and/or provided CDs for:

-311
-Incubus
-Sublime
-Liquid Tension Experiment
-King Crimson
-Pink Floyd
-Tool
-Primus

And then my friend Matt, who goes to this site under the name Zeta, has told me about a bunch of nice music as well. He'll sometimes send me lists of songs that I should d/l, and most of them are pretty cool, including:

-Cold
-Crossfade
-Finch
-Flaw

I've gotten the rest of my music from suggestions of other friends, but the two main sources are listed above, lol. That's really the best way of being introduced to bands, in my opinion -- word of mouth. I don't really trust my local radio stations, and music tv stations mainly play crappy mainstream and popular songs that I don't go for.

I think I owe my very soul to Tony for introducing me to Muse because they've steadily become one of my favorite bands. They're such an excellent rock band - the kind that make you smile and want to sing along and/or jump around like a looney no matter where you are.

I'm pretty sure he was also the one who suggested Queens of the Stone Age, as well as David Bowie and Modest Mouse, so I have to thank him for those as well. I think I'll just give him my first child. Or I'll turn straw into gold for him. Or something.

I would say that both Shinmaru and anatema got me interested in Franz Ferdinand, since they were both really into them at about the same time. There's a whole bunch of other bands that I want to try out though (like Say Anything) and I know that credit is going to go somewhere but it's getting to the point where I just lose track of who said what.. ^_^;

I personally don't know anyone that listened to Say Anything before I went on and on about them, other than the kid who introduced them to me: John Pressley. He only heard one song and figured I'd be into them. Guess he was right lol. I guess he's a good one to mention, although he usually goes on and on about pop rock/punk bands that he likes, not taking into account that he knows I'd not really be interested. I think he just wants me to like what he does lol.

Most of what I listen to isn't really suggested to me by any one person. I read reviews often (check out local papers, especially ones trying to be "cool" -- they will turn you on to a lot of stuff) and I also post on a music forum, which leads to a lot of "check this out if you like ___" and that's the end of it.

In my everyday life off the internet, I don't really have much of anyone to talk to that shares my musical taste. Most of the people I know who are older than me refuse to think that anything better than Kid Rock has come out of the last ten years (which is to say they think everything sucks) and are still stuck in music from twenty years ago.

Friends my age really either don't seem to be into music or listen to thing that completely just don't interest me. Particularly really lame mall punk bands that all sound alike. My best friend, before we really talked much about music, mainly just listened to Genesis and Elvis. At least he likes NIN now, so we have more to talk about concerning music lol.

There are certainly people that are willing to listen to what I have to say about what I or they listen to, but it's hard to have a real discussion when no one else you know cares about Big Black or Arcade Fire or whatever else. I don't have as much of a problem with musicians like David Bowie, who are obviously far more popular.

I also just go to music stores and look around. There's usually posters or stickers on the CDs that say "if you love ____, you'll like this". That's how I originally bought my first Zeromancer CD years ago. Plus you can just listen to literally anything. I pick up new CDs based simply on cover art and their name. Never heard The Tea Party before, bought one of their CDs I thought looked neat and liked them ever since.

Sometimes I try to find out more about some genre or sub-genre I don't much about and wind up finding a lot of new groups I don't know and wind up liking. That's how I originally stumbled on Curve probably countless others. I also found out about Jack Off Jill originally because I'm such a big Manson fan and they were involved musically together years and years ago. Same with Rasputina.

As for this forum itself, I don't know. When I think of people that like similar bands, we all kind of seem to listen to the same things. Shinmaru is a good example of that. When someone's favorite bands are also some of your favorite bands, there's not much introducing to do lol. I'm sure I might have checked out something because he mentioned it, but I honestly can't remember offhand.

Satan665 mentions a lot of things that I've either not given a good chance to or not gotten around to as well. Ratatat is a good example... I've still not had a chance to really listen to them.

I'd say, mostly, rather than turning me on to things I didn't really know... a lot of people here get me to check out bands that I wound up ignoring or just assuming weren't things I'd like. Mitch with Radiohead for example. I didn't care for a lot of their stuff until I really gave it a chance since he talked about them so much. The Bends rocks, so there.

I'd say the main person here who got me to listen to things I normally wouldn't have was likely Olga the Dwarf. He just listens to a type of music that I really just ignored for a long time. I've found myself listening to a lot more hardcore type stuff since a few of his posts.

Anyway, that was rambly and not completely on subject, so I apologize.

I remember the days when I used to shut the radio off when something like Linkin Park or Eminem came on. I hated that kind of music, that was when I was into Brittney and Spice Girls *shudder*

I have to thank my friend Melissa for getting me into Linkin Park when I moved over here to England. I guess it was cool to hate rock music in South Africa and I needed all the 'cool-points' that I could get, heh.

I was in her dad's car and he blasted us both with Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory album and I was taken in right then. I loved their music and now I have all of there albums.

other bands which friends have introduced me to are-

Sum41- By my friend Tanya in South Africa. She had downloaded 'Fat Lip' and we air guitared all afternoon trying to learn the words. I later bought two of their albums, I think they've gotten worse though, sad to say.

Theory of a Deadman- Trevor (Unborn Lord Xion) sent one of their songs to me and it made me cry. It was 'The Last Song' and for some reason it just made me go all gooey. I still cry sometimes when I listen to it.

Eve6- Another band that Trev introduced me to, that boy is a life saver. I?d never even heard of Eve6, but as I listen to them now, it dawns on me that they are bloody brilliant.

Curve- I downloaded some of their songs after seeing Shin's thread on the OB. Thought they were cool, 'Weekend' is a brilliant song.

There are probably more, but those are the ones that spring to mind. All of them brilliant bands, quite a few of them risen to be my favourites.

Well, I was a regular country girl until I met Lincoln...ok so I listened to some pop stuff, but here's some band I've been introduced to:

New Found Glory- He had heard of them and heard their music, but I bought him their second CD

Good Charlotte-Again same as New Found Glory, but I bought Lincoln thier first CD

LeeAnne Womack- Ok, so she's a singer, not a band, but I was introduced to her by my best friend Becky.

They Might Be Giants-I heard them on Tiny Toons, but didn't know who they were. But thanks to having Amanda as my lab partner and friend I learned who they were and found more music.

Linkin Park, God Smack, Concrete Blonde, Drop Kick Murphy's, Floggin' Molly and Atari's, SevenDust, Deadsy, Papa Roach, The Donnas and Kittie-All from Lincoln

Poe A girl I worked with let me borrow the CD.

If I may add to this thread, what bands or singers have you introduced your friends to?

I introduced my husband and friends to Dixie Chicks and I told Lincoln I had heard of Maroon5 before he came back on leave in September. And 30 Seconds to Mars that I remember sending to him.

I've introduced Lincoln's cousin, her boyfriend and my friends to The Ataris I highly recommend So Long Astoria their newest album along with their first one, Look forward to failure.

I don't remember the names of all the bands, but I've sent Lincoln quite a few CDs of new bands that haven't been heard on the radio.

In person, I barely know anyone who's gotten me into any bands...most of the bands that I've liked for a while now I've hunted out myself. I got into Nine Inch Nails because I loved the music video for "Closer", for example (and obviously I liked the actual song lol). I got into Sonic Youth because I remembered them from The Simpsons and their name was written on the backpack of a friend of mine (maybe that counts as a roundabout way of being introduced to a band by a friend of mine, I don't know). A bunch of other bands I just heard on the radio. A lot of people I know in person don't really listen to the same bands I do. The only band I can think of offhand that a friend of mine introduced me to that I liked is Finch, really.

Online, Tony is the big supplier of music to me. Our musical tastes are pretty similar, and he's introduced me to a ton of bands that I really like a lot, and might not have ever had a clue about otherwise. Pixies, Curve, Jack Off Jill, Scarling, The Tea Party, Toadies, and a bunch of other stuff. Mitch has sent me some good music from time to time, as well. I liked Radiohead before Mitch sent me some of their music I hadn't heard, but I like them a lot now. There are a few other bands whose music he sent me that I liked. Wondershot's sent me a few songs, as well, the most recent of them being from The Flaming Lips.

So, yeah, it's nice to know some people online who are really into music lol.

Linkin Park by my friend Ravi. At first, I didn't like them very much, and their screaming towards the end of the song made me want to shut off the radio. I forgot about these guys for a while, until my friend Sonny reintroduced them to me. At that point, I loved them. I suppose my taste had changed for the better.

Lost Prophets, Coldplay, Radiohead, Muse by my friend Sarah. She drove me to school, and she always ALWAYS played these CDs. I love them now.

Eminem by my friend Mykl. He lent me the CD, and I loved a few tracks, hated a few tracks. Overall though, I liked him.
